When you’re a gardener, so-cializing is a simple thing. Theminute you hear someone men-tion plants you strike up a con-versation, eagerlyswapping tips orboasting of successes.Some get addicted tothis exchange and it’sno surprise that thisage-old hobby is keep-ing in touch via socialmedia sites.

“I prefer Facebookrather than Twitter be-cause I can post pic-tures on it,” says PatHayward, ExecutiveDirector of Plant Select. “Gar-dening is visual, you really needphotos.” A Facebook user per-sonally, Hayward quickly adopt-ed the social site for keepingfans in touch with Plant Selectevents, retailers that sell theproducts and members. Thepage has 150 fans from all overthe world.

“What I don’t do is get intoplant descriptions or perfor-mance,” Hayward says. “Thething about Facebook or anyother social media is that it’sabout what’s happening rightnow, this minute. I use it to pro-mote places I visit and put a per-sonal touch on what the garden-ers are doing with our plant line.For other information, ourblog’s been effective (plantse-l e c t . w o rd p re s s . c o m / ) . ”

The gardeners I chatted withabout social media admit theyprefer blogs to membership insocial sites. As Hayward pointsout, social sites can be a bit one-way in communication, whileblogs offer the advantage of con-versation. Organizations link

blogs to their pages giving gar-deners the opportunity to have atwo-way conversation, such asthe fun, funky Kiss My Aster

( h o rt m a g . c o m / k i s s -myaster), hosted byHorticulture Maga-zine.

Other sites offerinformation onplants, as well ascompanionship. My-folia.com, a globalgardening networkthat combines jour-naling with chat,strives to help forget-ful gardeners remem-

ber what they’ve planted. All thegardener has to do is enter eachplant they’ve put in the groundonto their personal page, andMyfolia links you to othersgrowing the same thing.

This is a great service if youcan find the time to do it, espe-cially if you’re a beginner learn-ing to grow or an advanced gar-dener wanting information onmore challenging plants. Theonly suggestion I’d make is thatMyfolia come with a popup win-dow that reminds gardeners thatthis information comes from allover the globe, so keep growingconditions in mind. What worksin Florida might not work inColorado.

To solve this, Myfolia offersgardeners the chance to link upwith others in their area, grow-ing zone or plant interest. Join aplant group to narrow downyour interests and talk with oth-ers as obsessed as you by toma-toes, herbs or other plants.

If you’re interested in target-ing your virtual socialization,Ning (ning.com/) links you to

groups that share your passions.I’ve joined a few sites this way,such as Kitchen Gardeners In-ternational and Wine 2.0, andlearned quickly that if you don’tchoose wisely you might be dis-appointed.

The Kitchen Gardeners site isso active it overwhelms the in-box, and while becoming friendswith people named Armand isamusing, I’m not that interestedin what wine he’s decanting forthe guests at his Argentinean re-sort. Or maybe I am, but not ev-ery day.

Locally, gardeners go to chatgroups such as [email protected], alistserv covering topics uniqueto our area. Conversations onthis listserv come directly intoyour inbox so you can followthreads easily.

And we have a few blogs inthe area that cover local topics,growing conditions and garden-ing events. For the record, I blogat gardeningafterfive.word-press.org. Other blogs from localwriters are Front Range FoodGardener, a site devoted to edi-ble plants (frontrangefoodgar-dener.blogspot.com/), DiggingIn, one woman’s discovery ofgardening (blogs.denver-post.com/diggingin/), and Gar-dening Into Thin Air on thechallenges of a Boulder garden( t h i n a i rg a rd e n . b l o g s p o t . c o m / ) .Visit any of these to find theright fit for you.

Sharpening the Blade of a ShovelTo sharpen the blade, you need a vise to keep it in place, a pair of gloves so you won’t get metalchards under the skin and a mill bastard file. Lay the file almost parallel to the blade of the shovel.Put weight on the outer edge. Pull it through and lift. Go one way. File the entire blade. If you’re like me, your sofa is suchan important part of your daily lifethat when it’s time to get a new one,it’s like adding a new member to yourfamily. And just like family members,sofas have definite personalities. Hereare some tips for picking the perfectone for your home.

Size It UpInterior designers like to argue

about whether it’s more important fora sofa to fit the scale of your room orthe contours of your body. In myopinion, you need one that does both,because in the long run, you won’t behappy with a sofa that isn’t the perfectproportion for your room or for yourp o s t e r i o r.

To make sure your sofa suits thespace, before you shop, measure yourroom and make note of the size andscale of additional furniture you willneed to work around. Then, as youshop, forget your inhibitions and flopdown on the sofas just like you wouldat home. Your body will tell you in aflash if the sofa is a fit.

Pick the Right PartsJust like people, sofas have backs,

arms, seats and legs. And if you’re likemost of my customers, you will have

a strong preference on each facet ofyour sofa’s anatomy.

First, pick a back that suits yourtaste and touch. If you want a formal,tailored look, check out a tight backdesign, where the back is upholsteredand has no removable cushions. Ifyou want a sofa that’s more comfort-able and casual, you might prefer aloose-back sofa that’s covered withcushions or pillows.

Next, consider the arms. The mostcommon style is a rolled arm thatcurves outward – an ideal pick forthose who like to nap on the sofa. Ifyou’re looking for a more modernlook, however, you might prefer acrisp, square arm. As important asarm shape is arm height. How high doyou want your sofa’s arm to come?

Third, decide whether you’d likeyour sofa to have a cushioned, benchor tight seat. Cushioned seats consistof separate cushions that fit snugly to-gether, and they are a great option if

you want to remove the covers forlaundering. A bench seat is one largecushion that spans the entire lengthof the sofa. Tight seats are built intothe frame of the sofa and cannot beremoved. They are usually firmer andmore formal in appearance.

Finally, look at the sofa’s legs. Doyou want a straight, modern leg or amore traditional look, like curved legson castors? Or would you rather cov-er the legs with a skirt featuring kick,inverted, button or box pleats?

ing selection of sofa styles, start bychecking out a few of my favorites.

The English or Club sofa was mypick for my own living room. Thistimeless style features slightly round-ed arms set back from the rolled back.You can dress this sofa up or downsimply by changing your accent pil-lows.

If you like sofas with high arms, the

Knole style may be just right for you.This mainstay of the English countrylook has a straight, high back and an-gled arms. Traditional models featurefinials wrapped in cords at the junc-ture of the back and arms.

If I had a formal library, I’d get aChesterfield sofa in a heartbeat. Usu-ally upholstered in leather, Chester-fields feature tufted backs, high rolledarms and tight seats.

My customers can’t get enough ofthe traditional Bridgewater sofa, withits low, rolled arms and cushionedback and seat. Unassuming and age-less, this beloved style fits most peo-ple’s lifestyles and bodies.

Rocks add unique structuralelements to any yard

Not so long ago, people wanted to get rid ofrocks in their yards. Now they often requestthem as part of the trend toward more natural-looking gardens. Rocks are the easiest sculp-tural elements to incorporate into a garden tocreate a natural-looking landscape. They addcolor, contrast and interest; require no mainte-nance; and provide a bit of surprise.

They fill another need, too – security barri-ers. Rocks and plantings strategically placedwill keep even the smallest of vehicles fromharming public and private buildings.

Now is the perfect time to design and placelandscape stones. Arrange them around earlybulbs and plants that are just breaking dorman-cy. That way, you can see the “bones” of thelandscape and know where your landscaperocks will fit best. Rocks come in every size,from giant Stonehenge-like slabs to tiny peb-bles the size of peas. They come in a naturalkaleidoscope of colors, including brown, tan,red, pink, blue, green, white, black and gray.

The big issue with rocks is that they canweigh a ton – really. You will need equipmentand assistance to transport and place them. Po-sitioning is important, so everyone involvedneeds to be patient.

Like other large, heavy objects, specimenrocks can be expensive. And the effort to trans-port them might limit your use of ornamentalrocks in the landscape. However, nature has

produced lava rock, and modern technologyhas stepped in with artificial rocks that look au-thentic.

Lava rock is a porousvolcanic material, signifi-cantly lighter than otherstone because it’s full of airpockets. It’s available in aselection of colors – black,brown, russet and gray – atstone suppliers and gardencenters. While it doesn’t fitthe native garden theme, itwill work in some naturalg a rd e n s .

Most synthetic rocks arecomposites of several mate-rials, primarily textured,colored Fiberglas, and thusare not heavy.

Repetition is important.In nature, rocks repeat ef-fortlessly. If you have onlyone natural rock outcrop-ping in the yard, add moreto make stone a theme.Vary sizes and spread themthroughout garden beds –two to three per bed at most. Arrange in ran-dom fashion to appear as though they jut fromthe earth, simulating nature.

Large specimen rocks should complementnearby plants. Choose plants that might growclose to them in nature, such as ferns, bleedinghearts and hellebores in some shade, or grasses,black-eyed Susans and purple coneflowers infull sun. Smooth, flat rocks can be placed for

natural seats.

Measure the space where you plan to includerocks so you know what size you are looking

for. Select landscape stoneas carefully as you wouldyour plants. Look at eachfor size, color, texture andshape.

Smaller rocks can beused in a variety of ways.Low rock retaining wallsare charming additions thatgive a manicured look torustic, natural gardens.Wall-size flat rocks, up to afoot or so wide, can be or-ganized and stacked with-out mortar for low walls.

Rocks enhance water fea-tures. Stone coping aroundnatural water features suchas a lily pond fits therockscaping theme. Stonescan be used to create foun-tains, with water bubblingup, out of or gently fallingdown them. They can cre-ate waterfalls in natural or

artificial streams.

Stone can be used to imply a riverbed and atthe same time serve as an effective and orna-mental drainage swale. Cover soil surface of ameandering U-shaped or V-shaped depressionwith consistent aggregate material such asrounded river gravel. Mix varying sized largerrocks for a natural stream design.

with relaxation elements. If youplan to use your small yard asan additional space for enter-tainment, incorporate sittingspace and tables for overflowfrom the house.

Use Contrast to yourAdvantage.

The nice thing about a smalllawn is the contrast you caneasily achieve in the foliage.Lush green grass is the founda-tion that contrasts with the col-ors and textures of otherplants. Keep your lawn vibrantand consider planting flowers,shrubbery or an herb garden.The contrast in these elementsprovides a visual frame that is

appealing.

Fertilize You LawnGreen grass provides us with

a soothing, relaxing feeling. Butthe No. 1 problem with grass isit ends up malnourished andstarves. Therefore it’s impor-tant to fertilize four to fivetimes a year so you get strongroot and top growth.

Outdoor Decor Adds AppealConsider adding elements to

your yard that interject yourpersonal style. For example,adding a water feature is a greatidea that is visually appealingplus it adds a water sound thatcreates a relaxing atmosphere.

You could also add a bird feed-ing station to attract wildlife. Ifroom is limited, consider asmall hummingbird feeder.

My foothill soil eats rototillers for breakfast. Be-tween the heavy clay and rocks, the soil has eitherripped out the transmission or broken the tines ofall but the most expensive hard-core tillers. In sum-mer, the rocks heat up, baking plant roots from be-low. We can go without rain from May to Novem-ber, challenging every plant not on a sprinkler sys-tem.

This illustrates the plight of folks in the ruggedterrain of Western mountain ranges, where thecombination of problem soils and arid climate chal-lenges all but the super-adapted native plants. Cata-logs from New England, books by English garden-ers and expert advice from east of the Mississippisimply fail to acknowledge how challenging the In-termountain West can be. And because the Westernnatives for landscaping are so difficult to maintainin pots, the average garden center is unlikely to car-ry them.

The hardest part of growing Western natives isfinding the plants to buy. Most retailers shy awayfrom them because they are hard keepers. Water atthe wrong time or lack of it quickly spells theirdemise. Western natives have become a real spe-cialty, and the growers who have mastered them arethe best place to order locally. But if there is nosuitable grower nearby, you must go online.

Loan modification program getting many cries for helpCries for help over the loan modifica-

tion process always start something likethis:

“Dear Ilyce, I have beentrying to get my mortgagelender to respond to my re-quest for a loan modificationfor months. At one point,they told me I prequalifiedfor a loan modification. Nowthey say I don’t. My housepayment is almost half of myincome. My home is worth afraction of what I paid.

“The story is always that Ishould call back in (choose one: 30, 45or 60) days. I have heard that peoplewho hire attorneys are getting great re-sults with loan modifications. I knowpeople who have had several hundredthousands of dollars in principle forgiv-en. What should I do? Do you know ifmy lender is helping anyone?”

I know it’s the dog days of summer,and everyone in D.C. wants to go on va-cation (hello, Martha’s Vineyard).

But if my inbox (which is stuffed) isany indication, the troubles with loan

modifications are multiplying across thecountry as home prices continue to sink.

Several weeks ago, Presi-dent Obama called in the topmortgage lenders for a meet-ing and reportedly told themto get on the stick and domore loan modifications. Thelenders sitting at the table re-portedly said they’d do500,000 loan modifications.The real question is howquickly will they do them?And will borrowers have totake a hit on their credit his-

tories and scores until the loan modifi-cations are in place?

According to the latest reports, about9 percent of eligible homeowners havehad their loans modified on a temporarybasis, and an even tinier percentagehave had those temporary loan modifi-cations made permanent.

Loan modifications are supposed tobe considered temporary for threemonths. Once you make three paymentson time, your temporary loan modifica-tion is supposed to be made permanent.

I heard from a homeowner this weekwho was told by her lender to make herfifth month of temporary payments be-cause the lender just can’t get to the pa-per work.

I heard from another borrower whobegan the loan modification processeight months ago and whose loan hasonly now been modified.

Most borrowers have no idea if theprocess they have gone into will countagainst their credit history and creditscore and don’t know whether the modi-fication will help them. Worse, theydon’t know if someone will forget they’rein the temporary program and neversend them the finalized paperwork.

A highly placed source in the Trea-sury Department said homeowners inthis situation should only start to worrywhen they receive a foreclosure notice.

“If your lender tells you to keep mak-ing temporary loan modification pay-ments, and you haven’t received a fore-closure notice or any other indicationthat something’s wrong, then that’swhat you should do,” said the source,who asked not to be named because his

inbox is already stuffed with e-mailfrom homeowners who are looking forguidance and assistance. “But keep yourcanceled checks. Make sure that everytime you speak to someone you writedown their name, employee identifica-tion number and which office they’recalling from.”

What should you do if you can’t getyour mortgage lender to pay attentionto you? My Treasury source recom-mended you call the lender frequently. Ifyou get someone who doesn’t seem tobe able to help, hang up and call again.

Dear B.J.D.: We answer this question with great trepidationfor two reasons: 1) the picture is so poor that it is difficult tosee the details on the coin; and 2) it is impossible to tellwhether or not this is a re-strike without seeing the piece inperson.

During the period of the American Confederation – be-tween the Declaration of Independence (1776) and thefounding of the U.S. Mint in 1792 – a number of states estab-lished mints to make coins. In October 1786, Massachusettsapproved an “Act for establishing a Mint for the coinage ofGold, Silver and Copper.” No gold or silver coins were made,but in 1787 and 1788, copper cents and half cents were pro-duced, all with the image of an American Indian holding abow and arrow on one side and an eagle with olive branchesand arrow clutched in its talons on the other.

We are not even going to suggest a value for this coin be-cause we cannot ascertain the condition, when it was madeor by whom. B.J.D. needs to take this piece to a specialist forfurther evaluation. But its insurance-replacement value is al-most certainly less than $1,000, and probably less than $500.

Home prices finally on the rise in some areasBy Claes Bell

Home prices rose across a large swathof the country during the second quar-ter, adding to the growing list of signsthat the housing market has stabilized.Out of 155 markets included in the sur-vey, 125 showed median price increasescompared to the first quarter of thisyear. Overall, the National Associationof Realtors reports a nearly 4 percentrise in the median sales price for singlefamily homes since the first quarter ofthe year, from $167,300 to $174,100.

In addition, several distressed mar-kets are getting some much needed re-lief from the quarterly hammeringthey’ve been taking since the housingmarket peaked in the second quarter of2006. Miami-Fort Lauderdale-MiamiBeach, Fla., actually saw a 0.7 percentincrease in home prices, breaking a los-ing streak going all the way back to thefirst quarter of 2007.

Other markets that weren’t as hard hitare showing signs of life, as well. TheDavenport-Moline-Rock Island area ofIowa and Illinois showed an impressive

30.6 percent increase in home valuesyear over year.

Sales activity also showed gains overthe first quarter, to a seasonally adjustedannual rate of 4.76 million units. In

fact, 39 states showed an increase insales over the first quarter, includingIdaho (67.5 percent), Hawaii (24.2 per-cent), New York (22.3 percent) andWisconsin (21.7 percent).

“With low interest rates, lower homeprices and a first-time buyer tax credit,we’ve been seeing healthy increases inhome sales, which are a hopeful sign forthe economy,” says NAR chiefeconomist Lawrence Yun in a statement.

Don’t get too excited, though. Homeprices nationwide are still down 15.6percent year over year, and 23.4 percentsince the housing bubble peaked in2006.

Of the 155 metropolitan areas sur-veyed, 129 reported lower median exist-ing single-family home prices comparedto the second quarter of 2008; just 26showed price gains.

Also, the rise in sales traffic continuesto be driven in part by foreclosures andshort sales, which accounted for 36 per-cent of transactions in the second quar-ter, according to NAR.

For the third straight quarter, theCape Coral-Fort Myers area of south-

west Florida recorded the biggestslump, falling 52.8 percent year-over-year. Since 2006, median prices in theregion have taken a nose dive, plum-meting from $268,200 to $84,000.
