STEWARDSHIP SPOTLIGHT - THE FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the mothers in our parish! A mother’s love is God’s gift of love to us. A mother’s unconditional love of her children is a sign of God’s unconditional love for us. May all mothers have a blessed and joyous Mother’s Day and always. Welcome to all new students who have joined us for the summer A or summer C terms. We hope that you make St. Augustine’s your parish now that you are out on your own. You can register online at www.catholicgators.org/parish-registration. Things are a little slow for summer A, then they pick up for summer B (e.g., Newman Club Tuesday dinners), then we come fully alive in August for the fall. And welcome back to our “old” students. During Easter season, the first reading is from the Acts of the Apostles telling of the birth and growth of the early Christian Church. Today’s reading tells how the success of the Church caused some practical problems. A few weeks ago we heard how everyone sold what they had and gave the proceeds to the Church so that it could be used for the good of all. Apparently this was so successful that the apostles and church leaders got bogged down in managing this temporal versus spiritual aspect of the Church. So they appointed lay people to take care of practical matters. Things are not that different today. We have a parish staff, indeed, a whole church administration, to help out with the practical aspects of the Catholic Church so that the ordained can focus on spiritual matters. Having a paid staff to help manage the finances, liturgies, and education is a necessity, but it doesn’t cover all that we do. Look at the “Parish Ministries” page on our web page (www.catholicgators.org/about-us) to see the numerous things going on. There is something for everyone to get involved with and help out with our mission to “Bring Christ to the Campus and the Campus to Christ.” We have time and talent fairs during the year, but you are always welcome to contact the office or lay leaders to sign on or ask questions. Finally, for us long-time parishioners, we have become accustomed to the ebb and flow of life at St. A’s through the academic year. Summer masses are a little lighter in attendance with most of the students gone and families taking vacations. Therefore, our offertory drops significantly, but our expenses do not. As noted above, we have heard how early Christians sold everything for the Church. We’re not asking anyone to do that! But contributing what you can to the offertory on a regular basis would be very helpful in keeping the AC running. Thank you, Paul A. Gulig Chair, Stewardship Committee and Parish Council
