Chipping is a picturesque limestone village located in the county of Lancashire in the North West of England. The village is situated 8.5 miles to the north west of Clitheroe and 12.7 miles north east of Preston.

The village lies in the heart of the Ribble Valley, a rural haven in the heart of Lancashire. Renowned for it’s unspoilt countryside, wildlife and heritage in the north of England, most of the Ribble Valley lies within a designated ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ (AONB). The protected landscape provides majestic views and expansive areas for walking, riding and exploring. The area provides a wealth of historic interest with picturesque towns and villages, all unique and rich in heritage and tradition.

Chipping is positioned at the south western side of the Forest of Bowland within the Ribble Valley, an AONB covering 312 sqm of rural Lancashire and North Yorkshire and home to the famous landmark of Pendle Hill. The village is frequently the winner of Britain in Bloom and Best Kept Village and together with the neighbouring Lake District and Yorkshire Dales areas, the region attracts millions of tourists a year

The village also lies as a gateway to Sykes Fell from the local service centres of Longridge and Clitheroe and provides access to the start of the North Lancashire Bridleway, connecting the village to the Forest of Bowland.

The name “Chipping” is derived from the Old English “ceping”, which means “a market”. Once a market centre on the doorstep of the Royal hunting grounds at Leagram Hall, Chipping became a thriving village of manufacturing centred around the waterways.

Dating back to the late 17th Century, the historic core of the village remains relatively unchanged, retaining it’s vernacular charm with narrow streets bound by a mixture of limestone buildings. The rich history and architectural elements remaining within the Kirk Mill area have recently been recognised by the designation of the Kirk Mill Conservation Area.

Planning has been granted to provide this comprehensive leisure environment, with the mill as the centrepiece, which dates from 1785 and still retains many original features including the water wheel and its gearing system that will be preserved. The adjoining dilapidated factory buildings are to be demolished to make way for a new extension that will combine traditional design with modern utility providing modern purpose built accommodation, whilst enhancing the character of the wider development and restoring the central part of the conservation area.

The letting accommodation is to be divided between the Kirk Mill building, which will also house the bar restaurant, the converted 18th century former barn building, the Malt Kiln House and a new purpose built hotel and spa facility.

The scheme is also to include a wedding venue, separate from the letting rooms, a Kids Club and Trailhead Centre which is intended to drive visitor numbers and expand the offering of the development.
