One of the most difficult decisions for a couple is when to seek help for difficulty getting pregnant. Ap-proximately 80% of all couples conceive within 6 months of trying. The definition of infertility is defined by time. If the woman is older than 35 and she doesn’t conceive in 6 months then she is defined as having infertility. If the woman is under 35 years of age then she carries the diagnosis of infertility if she fails to conceive after a year of trying. These definitions are based on when a woman should see a reproductive endocrinologist. If she is older, she should see a reproductive endocrinologist sooner than if she is younger. In other words seek help before it is too late!

As you know, many couples have no difficulty con-ceiving early in their marriage. But as time goes by cou-ples often have difficulty having a second child. Couples who had success having a child early in their relation-ship often have difficulty imagining that they are going to have or are having trouble conceiving a second child. This is secondary infertility. A delay in recognizing sec-ondary infertility often makes secondary infertility more difficult to overcome. Seek the help of a reproductive endocrinologist early to help you recognize secondary infertility.

There are many causes of primary and secondary infertility and many are simple to fix or overcome. Do not become bogged down with stories of patients un-dergoing many in vitro fertilization cycles without suc-cess. These sad stories do happen but are not the norm. Modern advances in the treatment of infertility allow most couples to have children. In our office most cou-ples ultimately have a baby if they continue treatment

in a safe and effective manner. This makes us feel very good about what we do each day. And we really feel like we can help most couples create a family.

Recent developments in the treatment of infertility are good examples of safe and successful advances in the field of medicine. In our clinic these advances are used only when the simplest of treatments have not worked. The most important barrier to having a fam-ily is time. An example of a recent advancement is the egg freezing program at the Hawaii Reproductive Cen-ter. While the technology for safely freezing sperm and embryos has been available for decades, the scientific knowledge needed to cryopreserve eggs has been more difficult to develop. Two recent breakthroughs have allowed us to overcome these scientific hurdles and now egg freezing is becoming a viable option. Egg freezing was initially developed as a way to preserve eggs for patients undergoing cancer treatment. How-ever, egg freezing is now available for those women wishing to preserve their eggs until they feel the time is right to have a child.

At the Hawaii Reproductive Center, we feel that western infertility treatment modalities are enhanced by integrating them with specific aspects of Oriental medi-cine, a concept called integrative medicine. Utilizing this integrative medicine technique we see great advance-ments in the treatment of infertility. We are blessed to be able to be part of it. We see patients all over Hawaii that we have helped and it is a tremendously warm feeling to meet their families. We look forward to helping you in our new state-of-the-art location at 1132 Bishop Street.

Aloha!I was going through past emails that I have sent out to advertisers and this one caught my attention. It seemed appropriate for this issue— 12/2008A Letter To Our Advertisers—

I first want to say thank you for your support over the last eight years.

Right now I want to remind everyone that we have the ability to choose. Either to buy into what the media is telling us and the fear or not to. No one person is going to rescue us and we have the power to get a rescue strategy for ourselves.

I have been working hard over the past few months thinking outside of the box and being creative on ways to help our advertisers promote their business in addi-tion to advertising in print. We have set up partnerships with small and large Expos with healthy food courts and catering opportunities for our healthy food advertisers, classes and workshops for practitioners, networking, partnerships with fundraisers and events that have connections with radio/TV and much more! Those who know me have heard the story of Hawaii Wellness Directory’s past. It took us five years to make a profit and every weekend I was at an expo promoting the magazine and making connections, going to networking events, sitting on the computer throughout the night finding different resources to link our information to and the list goes on. During that time I was fortunate to have a nanny business that kept me afloat finan-cially. I would not trade that five years of hard work for anything. This gave me an appreciation for what it takes to make your businesses successful. I have offers all the time to help with distribution but I refuse and still insist on doing it myself. If you have worked at your local insurance office or beauty salon you have seen me drop off copies to every business, each issue personally.

Over the past eight years I have been able to hear all the amazing stories from our readers on how a naturopathic doctor has given hope to someone that has a terminal illness, back problems gone with a massage, a couple not getting a divorce after working with a counselor, and the list goes on. I always feel like a proud mom when I hear these stories and people need your services now more than ever.

The businesses that step up to the plate in 2009 [2011] and get to the many opportunities that are available to you are going to do well. The businesses that con-tinue doing businesses as usual which is stay inside your business and expect cus-tomers to show up at your door step are not going to make it. I want to assure you that I am not taking my foot off the pedal but the exact opposite and going full speed ahead. The people that know me would not expect anything different. This is not the time to say I cannot afford to advertise or promote my business because you cannot afford not to.

It is time to all hold hands with our wellness business family, look to the right and ask how can we help each others’ business right now.

I look forward to working with everyone next year & all the exciting opportunities that we have in store. One of my favorite sayings is Cowboy Up. If you have fallen off the horse and you are on the ground, wipe yourself off, put a smile on your face and get back up on that horse and enjoy the ride!

Yee Haa! Cowboy up! With Love, Lori Chaffin. Publisher

Derby

It is time to become a real rollergirl with Oahu’s Pacific Roller Derby

Pacifi c provides women across the island the opportunity to be the queen of the fl at track and gives fans the chance to enjoy an exhilarating live action sport. Consisting of over 60 female fresh meat and veteran skaters, Pacifi c has three teams: The Mischievils, The Villains, and The Crazy 808s, as well as a nationally competitive All-Stars team that represents Hawaii’s best skaters at tournaments and bouts across the country.

Pacifi c is always looking for new fresh meat — many of the league’s skaters had not skated before nor imagined themselves giving hip checks on the fl at track, but today they are hard hitters and agile athletes. Pacifi c embraces women, aged 18 and up, of all athletic ability – including those who have never played sports – to join and encourages potential skaters to sign up for NEW GIRL TRAIN-ING. This training opportunity provides women with off skates-conditioning and basic on-skates training and prepares skaters for league try-outs. These training sessions give women an exciting boot camp style derby work out and welcome women into a supportive community of strong-minded women from all backgrounds.

The Miracles of Soul HealingA man in Colorado

and two women in India can now see. A doctor bends at the waist and touches the floor after years of chronic back pain. A man trots up and down a flight of stairs after receiving heal-ing blessings for his back, hips and knees. These are just a few life-

changing events that unfolded before our eyes at Live Healing demonstrations by Dr. and Master Zhi Gang Sha.

A world-renowned healer, inspired teacher and best-selling author, Dr. Sha has developed a prov-en and effective healing system that goes well be-yond the power of the mind.

Here are spoken words from our Hawaii ohana:I have a weak immune response. With Mas-

ter Sha’s healing blessings, practices and

techniques, my infected leg was healed within four days without the use of antibiotics. The respiratory infection I had was also healed in four days by Master Sha’s blessings. —LT

The Love Peace Harmony Center Honolulu (founded by Dr. Sha in February 2010) is a blessed space, for all who enter may receive miraculous healing, whether mental, emo-tional, or physical. —Karen T.

Being in the powerful presence of all of the Healers at the Love Peace Harmony Cen-ter Honolulu, and receiving direct healing has decreased my BACK PAIN significantly. —Brenda G.The Love Peace Harmony Center Honolulu is

excited to announce that Dr. and Master Zhi Gang Sha is returning to Honolulu, February 24–27.

Come and experience the limitless potential of vibrant health in all aspects of your life. We look forward to meeting you!

Chi Nei Tsang: the ancient art of Taoist abdominal massage therapy

In our day-to-day lives we rarely take the time and energy to stop, take full, deep breaths and truly see how experiences might have affected

— our bodies (creating tensions),— our hearts (holding unresolved feelings), — our minds (accumulating stress), and — our energy levels (affecting our breathing pattern). Holding them in our bodies leads to physical illness and chronic pains...Inner Harmony Massage is where you find the

nurturing and compassionate touch to balance your whole Being.

Throughout the treatment, you have the opportunity to connect to and let go of those stored tensions and stresses, balance those emotions and recover your full breathing capacity, all in a safe, supportive and respectful environment. Creating, as a result, your Inner Harmony.

For treatments and classes on Chi Nei Tsang contact: Arturo Arroyo, Therapist and Instructor, MAT#6404,(808) 721–WELL (9355), [email protected], www.breathefeelheal.com.

The Wisdom of Well-Being

for the Mind, Body and Soul

Psycho-neuro-immunity is the study of how circumstances affect our lives; how the way we interpret events in our lives af-fects our physical being, our hormones, our neurological

pathways and our abilities to make rational deci-sions, our immune systems and our whole being.

According to traditional Chinese medicine, everything is caused from the emotions. The nature of our reactions to life’s challenges and our emo-tional responses lead to a variety of symptoms. This holds true in the philosophy of Naturopathic Medi-cine. There is no separation between the mind, the emotions, and the body.

In the five-element theory in traditional Chinese medicine, every organ has an associated emotion, color, time of day, season, sensory organ, taste, cor-responding body part, element in nature and an as-sociated set of symptoms when out of balance.

When working with Dr. Diana Joy Ostroff, your symptoms will not be treated in isolation without evaluating and properly caring for the emotional part of you.

Why you and your body collaborated to create this “opportunity to heal” will be discov-ered and uncovered. According to the principles of naturopathic medicine “the disease is the cure.” It is often only when we don’t feel well that we ac-tually take the time to seriously take care of our health. Why wait another minute? Your health is in your hands™.

Dr. Diana Joy Ostroff studied psychology for six years at both the University of Delaware and the University of Oregon graduating with honors in Psychology before completing her Naturopathic Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine training. This education plus her psychotherapy training and experience with clinical psychology, hypnotherapy, meditation, prayer, affirmation work and dreams gives her a host of tools to draw from when working with her patients.

RoHun™ Therapy is system-atic and rapid-acting psycho-therapy for personal growth

and change. RoHun Therapy is based on the psyco-dynamic interrelationship between the individual and his or her energy field. It draws its theoretical base from quantum physics and the recent discover-ies of the electromagnetic energy fields surround-ing the physical, emotional, and spiritual bodies of each person.

The RoHun therapist is trained to identify negative thought patterns and traumas stored in the client’s energy field. The therapist and client together release these energy blocks and replace them with positive, more efficient means of living. And it opens up the client to his or her own inner resources. RoHun is for individuals who are serious about mak-ing permanent life changes.

RoHun Therapy:• clears faulty thought patterns that attract

negative situations• awakens the client’s sensitivity to his or her

own inner resources • assists the client to relax tension • introduces the client to his or her own

creative, intuitive abilities• gives the client deep and meaningful

insights into self• aids the client in the development and

reinforcement of self confidence• helps the client forgive and release the

past, obtaining new freedom from guilt and resentments.

• assists moving the client towards a more open expression of self.

• increases peace and harmony within the client.

• increases the client’s understanding and compassion for self and others

• helps the client become more comfortable with one’s self and feel stronger about coping with life

• helps the client open up the heart to give and receive love.

Meet the House of Health owner Pam Fallon as she answers several questions:

Q: What inspired you to open a health food store? A: I’ve been involved in alternative health most of my life. I have worked for

a health food store, or owned a store for almost 30 years. Before opening House of Health here in Hawaii, I owned a health food store in California.

Q: What is your background and training?A: I’m a master herbalist and nutrition counselor. I’ve studied alternative

healing for 40 years and especially with herbs.

Q: What is special about House of Health?A: At House of Health, we will answer questions about healing or we know where to fi nd the

answers. I have a biomeridian testing program. We can determine what nutrients someone needs to bring their body back to balance so they can get well. I believe everyone can get well if they keep their body in balance. We pride ourselves with the customer service that we offer. I love it when someone comes in and compliments us for the help we give and shares with us their story about improved health.

How Does Clothing for Health Work?

Why Clothing For Health may improve health, recover injury, reverse aging and uplift your spirit.

We feel better in nature than in the city because the air has more negative ions, which in-crease our capacity to use oxy-gen; rejuvenate cells; enhance the immune system; regulate the pH balance and detoxify. We are happier, more relaxed

with less pain and allergy. You may be inspired to sing, write poetry, find more loving relationships, practice qigong or yoga and attend higher enlightment.

How can we carry the negative ion with us when we go back to the city, especially in front of computers, TV, cellular phones, and all the electronics that generate high amount of positive ions that cause us fatigue and bad temper?

Japanese scientists spent decades of research and study to invent a fabric that can generate negative ion and make that into clothing, so you can surround your body with nega-tive ion instead of wearing ordinary fabric like cotton, silk, wool, nylon, that generate positive ions with no health ben-efit. These high tech clothing items are imported from Japan and available to you from Clothing For Health.

Each fabric is a negative ion generator by itself. Therefore, the negative ion property is permanent. This clothing is portable and convenient to use anytime any-where. They are machine washable, re-usable, and fash-ionable. Massage therapists and people who are sensi-tive to energy may be able to feel the strong energy from the fabric and immediately want to use the clothing, un-derwear, scarf, socks, gloves, hat, blanket, supporter for themselves. They also recommend to their clients and friends for improving joint mobility, pain relief, better circulation, faster healing, prevent sport injury and enhance sport performance.

Complementary Medicine Helps Persons with Brain Injury

Testimonials

Twice Moku was hit by cars as he was biking when he was a teenager and later as an adult. He does not remember the incidents. Often he repeats the same thing because he has short-term mem-ory loss. As a veteran, Moku receives traditional health care. But he relies on massage to relieve aching muscles, ten-sion and stress.

Scott fell during a sporting event, hit his head, and was bedridden. His mother gave him Chinese herbal medicine in addition to prescribed medication and therapies to improve cognition. Scott re-learned eating, walking, and talking. His doctors say that he is a living miracle. He goes to vocational school and wants a job.

Lei, a registered nurse, sustained a brain injury when struck on the head by a patient while working. Soon after, she suffered a stroke and lost her ability to speak and walk. She remembers talking but her caregivers only heard gurgling sounds. Taking each baby step was a vic-tory. She relies on chiropractic care for her neck and back pain. She meditates to relax.

After a brain injury, a person may experience sym-ptoms for weeks, months, years or a lifetime. A brain in-jury is the result of a blow to the head that may produce an open or closed wound.

Symptoms might include a wide variety of cognitive problems. These could in-

clude difficulty attending, concentrating, executing, focusing, judg-ing, processing, remembering, speaking, tracking, or understanding. Others experience changes in behavior: frequent changes in emo-tions, irritability, mood swings, or outbursts. Physical symptoms could include endocrine dysfunction, fatigue, headache, incontinency, nau-sea, seizures, sleep disorders, or tinnitus. Many people have combi-nations of these effects. There is no cure for brain injury.

Conventional therapies may not be enough. A University of Michigan study reveals that persons with brain injury often turn to complementary and alternative medicines when conventional medical care does not improve mental and physical functioning (http://www.neuroskills.com/pr-alternative.shtml). Eighty percent of the study participants reported that alternative therapies were “effective” in coping with the effects of brain injury.

Do you have a brain injury? The Ho‘oikaika Peer Mentoring project brings together volunteers with brain injury to share knowl-edge and experiences. They can identify resources and gain skills to live more independently. Our volunteers form friendships and be-come active in the community again. Come join us!

Cosmetic medicine and surgery is an ever-evolving science, perpetually adopting new technology to offer patients the most effective treatments.

Dr. Gregory Caputy and his staff at Aesthetica Plastic and Laser Surgery Center and MediSpa, offer patients the latest treatments that help people look their best without disrupting their lives.

There are several new cosmetic procedures, which combined together as treatment regimes, that produce wonderful results.

“One of the most important factors of aging is defl ation of facial features—losing volume from the mid-30’s onward,” says Dr. Ca-puty, who has gained world-wide recognition for his pioneering work in non-Caucasian laser surgery.”

Dr. Caputy often recommends patients combine these treatments with laser therapies. Technological advancements in laser therapy are allowing patients to see dramatic results in reversing the aging process. The latest called Sublative Rejuvenation Matrix laser with Syneron, which improves the tone, texture and color of the skin, is safe and effective for darker skin and has minimal downtime. This new laser works from the inside out-targeting collagen production required for treating fi ne lines and wrinkles but is especially good for acne scars and textural irregularities caused by excessive sun exposure and aging.

Cosmetic surgery was really only something that celebrities or the very wealthy could afford, now anyone can fi nd a treatment regime to suite his or her lifestyle and pocket book.

Dr. Gregory Caputy’s Skin care line can give you results like our Miss Hawaii Aureana Tseu 2009!

Sacred Living with Lien Bal

Question: How can I benefit from a blessing ceremony? We have negativity in our workplace.Answer: A blessing ceremony encourages growth, luck, and prosperity. It enables you to honor the sacredness

of your surroundings. Performing blessing ceremonies in your home or office help clear negative and stagnant energies, strengthen positive ones, and can improve many areas of your life and environment. The blessing

ceremonies will change the quality of the entire home or office’s energy and free things up substantially. After properly implementing a blessing ceremony, you should feel lighter, happier, and more focused.“Lien recently helped us with blessing ceremonies at our home and workplace. Our most important needs were to clear strong negative energies from spirits needing release. Both blessings and ceremonies were not only beautiful but also specific to the needs of each space. We have definitely noticed a lot more clarity and lightness; we are much happier,

calmer at home, and more focused and empowered at work. We have also sought Lien’s help through an intuitive reading. She is extremely thorough and can “read” things quite accurately. We are humbled and honored to work with Lien and will continue to seek her kind, gracious, and valuable guidance on our life journey no matter where we are in time or place.” — S.L., Honolulu

Question: What is the Education and Background of a Naturopathic Doctor (ND)?Answer: A licensed naturopathic physician (N.D.) attends a four-year graduate-level naturopathic medical school and is educated in all of the same basic sciences as an M.D., but also studies holistic and nontoxic approaches to therapy with a strong emphasis on disease prevention and optimizing well-ness. In addition to a standard medical curriculum, the naturopathic physician is required to complete four years of training in clinical nutrition, acupuncture, homeopathic medicine, botanical medicine, psychology, and counseling (to encourage people to make lifestyle changes in support of their personal health). For at least the final two years of their medical program, students intern in clinical settings under the close supervision of licensed professionals.

Question: Can anyone be hypnotized? I do not want to give up control to someone else.Answer: There are a lot of misconceptions about Hypnotherapy, one of the major ones is that the client is giving over control to the Hypnotherapist or will lose control when in trance. Quite the opposite is true since all Hypnosis is Self Hypnosis. The trance state or being in an hypnotic state is a very natural relaxed state. Many times we are in trance when we zone out in front of the

television or our computer. The difference between this state and Hypnosis is that you are working on a focused objective in Hypnosis. Since all Hypnosis is Self Hypnosis, the client should be in rapport with their subconscious mind. The role of the Hypnotherapist is to work with the client and establish trust in helping them achieve rapport with their subconscious mind. The interaction between client and Hypnotherapist should include questions that help the client achieve Hypnosis.

Question: I am trying to lose weight. Will colonics help me with weight loss and detoxing?

Answer: Colonics are one of the oldest forms of healing. It was known that most disease begins in the colon. It was recognized that, in order to heal, the causes must be addressed and eliminated. Many people find they do lose weight and also their cravings as their bodies become more balanced. It does involve making wise dietary choices also, however. Much of what we’re doing, rather than helping us achieve health, is making us sick and destroying our health.

Give Soul Intention Jewelry…

Upcoming soul intention events at The Bead Gallery with Jamie, Stephen and Kumu Karen: Check on the website or call us at 589-2600 for times and details.

• Saturday, January 22nd • Saturday, February 19th • Saturday, March 19th • Saturday, April 9th, 2011

We know firsthand how uncomfort-able change can be... how easy it is to breeze through life without really stop-ping to enjoy ourselves, how difficult it is to just be in the moment. Staying bal-anced and caring for your spiritual self can be challenging and sometimes you need a little reminder that there are peo-ple out there cheering you on, loving you, and supporting you.

We have been blessed with people who truly love and support us, and know how important and life-sustaining that loving energy and kindness can be. With Soul Intention, we are your touchstones - planting seeds of inspiration, and help-ing you connect with all the love, strength,

courage, and wisdom that is right there with-in you.

A soul intention is special because it’s not JUST jewelry. It is a talisman, a lucky charm, a token, a memento...call it what you will! It is a piece that connects you with love. Every-thing from the gemstones hand-selected, to personalized readings, to the stamping of our charms... it is all done by a handful of friends who are committed to putting loving intentions into each piece. We want to trans-fer these positive intentions through our jew-elry. We want you to look at your necklace or bracelet and know: Someone made this just for me! I am special! I am worthy! I can do it! I am loved.
