CITY WILD LandHealth INSTITUTE Put Nature Back. a summer camp for curious kids ages 10–13 that offers off-the-beaten-path adventures and behind-the-scenes excursions to explore nature in the urban environment A City Wild day begins at Fairmount Water Works and ends most days at the Miquon School in Conshohocken. We offer several transportation options to accommodate kids from all over the city and suburbs: LandHealth Institute (LHI) is an innovative Philadelphia- based nonprofit organization whose mission is to “Put Nature Back” through exploration- based environmental education programming and community-focused land revitalization projects. All LHI’s programs and projects aim to build environmental awareness, heal ecologically ailing land, spark community revitalization, and foster individual discovery and fulfillment. About LandHealth Institute Miquon Day Camp: It’s summertime the way it used to be: fresh air, playing the woods, collecting crayfish in the creek. Here, the true magic of childhood unfolds. Located in a 10-acre wooded valley just outside Northwest Philadelphia, Miquon offers a rustic setting where children have that summer camp experience of yesteryear. Miquon is close enough to be accessible to many Philadelphia city and suburban neighborhoods, while feeling just far enough away from home. CITY WILD• takes you to explore the coolest unknown spots

throughout Philadelphia (and some outside the city, too!)

• immerses you in the city’s rivers, creeks and hidden water infrastructure

• exposes you to archaeology, critter-ology, and architecture in the urban environment

• inspires your creative side through journaling, photography, pottery, and other cool artistic projects

• guides you in a fun and meaningful service project that improves our urban environment

• gives you plenty of free time to hang out with your new friends, swim, and create

Welcome to City Wild SessionsCity Wild offers four two-week sessions of camp. Each session has a theme pertaining to an aspect of our urban environment, and many of our daily excursions and projects will relate to this theme. In each session campers will be exposed to a wide variety of neighborhoods, urban ecosystems, and cultural landmarks. Even though we’ll be outside exploring the city, every day there will also be opportunities for swimming, journaling, playing games, and creating things.

The following session descriptions give examples of expeditions- actual trips will vary.

Session 1: Art and Architecture: From Gritty to SublimeJune 27 - July 8 (no camp Monday July 4)

• Explore cutting-edge green buildings and Philadelphia’s most magnificent historic buildings has to offer

• Get a bird’s eye view of the city from the top of City Hall

• Cross bridges in the sky and tunnels underground

• Build a fort at Miquon School

Session 2: Growing Stuff in the City and BeyondJuly 11 - July 22

• Visit urban farms, community gardens and beehives and learn about growing stuff in the city first-hand from the farmers

• Check out all the stuff growing at Bartram’s Garden

• Go behind-the-scenes at Longwood Gardens• Grow your own plants to take home

Session 3: Talkin’ Trash: Our Garbage and WasteJuly 25 - August 5

• See first-hand where your trash and recycling go when you throw something away

• Visit a sewage treatment plant and learn about what happens after you flush

• From building materials to art– see inventive ways trash is being repurposed in the city

• Make an art project out of nothing but trash!

Session 4: City Water: Creeks, Rivers and PipesAugust 8 - August 19

• Hike the path of historic creeks now hidden underground below the pavement

• Kayak down the Schuylkill at Bartram’s Garden• Fountain-hop down the Ben Franklin Parkway!• Go fishing in an urban creek• Help restore an urban waterway
