Reading I: 1 Kgs 19:4-8 Elijah’s flight to HorebReading II: Eph 4:30-5:2 Vices to be avoidedGospel: Jn 6:41-51 Discourse on the bread of life, continued

Key Passage: Jesus said, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will life forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.” (Jn 6:51)

Reflection: : The theme of “bread from heaven” is developed in many ways in this chapter of John’s Gospel. Today’s reading opens with the people murmuring. Since he was born in time, since the people knew his father and his mother, Jesus simply could not have come from heaven. Jesus does not meet their objection directly. He raises the discussion to a higher level. To understand him it is necessary to have faith. Only God can give faith. God holds out the gift to all who are open to receive it. Faith is acceptance of Jesus, and this faith in Jesus, eating the living bread, gives eternal life.Question for Adults: When has the bread of life given you the strength you needed to face a difficult situation in your life? Question for Children: What will you ask Jesus to help you with when you receive Holy Communion this week?

MASS INTENTIONS

August 1 • THE WORD FOR CHILDRENGospel message: Just one day earlier, Jesus multiplied five loaves of bread and two fish to feed over 5,000 people. In today’s Gospel, some of those people came looking for Jesus, hoping to get another free lunch. They didn’t understand that Jesus wants all people to believe in Him. Through faith in Jesus, you can live forever. In heaven you will never be hungry or thirsty again.

Prayer: God, fill me up with love for Jesus.

Holy Spirit, give me food to share with the hungry.

LITURGICAL MINISTRY SCHEDULE: AUG 7-8• 19TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

FIAT: May it be done to me according to your word.

Stewardship reflectionIn today’s gospel, a crowd of Jesus’ followers

ask this question: “What can we do to accomplish the works of God?”

This question plagues many people who want to participate in God’s plan but have no idea where to start.

Discipleship is filled with tasks that seem overwhelming and even impossible for man to accomplish.

But Jesus makes it simple for us. His response to the question: “This is the work of God, that you believe in the one He sent.”

There is no need for us to overcomplicate things. God equips us for the difficult tasks. Our job is to humble ourselves and place our faith in Christ alone, through whom all things can be done.

Can you help? PSR catechists neededNot sure if this could be you, because you’re

not sure what PSR or catechists are or it sounds intimidating?

PSR is our PARISH SCHOOL OF RELIGION, which helps provide faith formation for K-5th grade students in public schools on Wednesdays, 6-7:30 pm, beginning Sept 8 and continuing until May.

You don’t have to be a theologian to be a CATECHIST (teacher of the faith) to these kiddos.

It just takes a love of God, love of children, a one-time VIRTUS class for the protection of children, and the commitment to come for an hour and half each Wednesday night.

We like to have two catechists per class room, and we provide all the materials, so you don’t have to worry about what to teach, or doing it alone! Class sizes are small, too!

We’ll have a Catechist meeting on Sept 1, andf PSR classes start Sept 8. Sign-up forms will be out soon!

We need additional catechists in the K-4 classrooms. If you think you might be interested, please call/text Mandi, 316-841-0808 for more info!
