Music Video

My music video was intended to use conventions from current and previous media in order to establish a recognisable image that would involve my intended audience instantly. For instance, from my research of inspiration for video, I noticed that artists' music videos were either narrative or performance based, which were a similar genre to my artist.

I chose to use a narrative based video as it complemented my artist and his style of music. A performance based video would contradict with my artist as he is more of a vocalist than a performer with an instrument. The song is slow and quite depressive, so I decided to emphasise this through visuals that enhanced and reflected the lyrics.

Conventions I used from real media products

Bon Jovi's 'Livin in Sin' video portrayed a love relationship between him and a women. I thought this worked well and was effective in displaying emotion, so I used this convention in my video.

Used a black and white effect, which was inspired by Jamey Johnson's 'In colour' and Bon Jovi's 'Livin in Sin' music video. I thought this was a very effect convention as it reflected the mood of the song and genre of the artist's music.

The artist styled in casual attire to match the genre of their music. I used this convention in order to attract my target audience and to make my video believable, as the artist's image would suit his style and genre of music.

Features of Goodwin's Theory applied to my

music video  There is a relationship between the music and

the visuals (with the visuals either illuminating, amplifying or contradicting the music). The editing might match the pace or tempo of the music.

I thought this convention was important to include in my video in order to emphasise the meaning of the lyrics within the song in a visual way.

Features of Goodwin's Theory applied to my

music video   A particular music genre may have their

own music video style and iconography (such as a live stage performance in heavy rock).

From my research I noticed that the soul genre, typically used black and white effects in their video to emphasise emotion. So I used this convention so that my target audience could easily relate to the images being shown, as they have seen this effect before.

Features of Goodwin's Theory applied to my

music video   There is a demand on the part of the record

company for lots of close-ups of the main artist/vocalist.

Within my video I used many close-ups of my artist lip-syncing, in order for the viewer to become familiar with the artist's image, which allows a deeper relationship to form between the two.

Conventions I challenged from real

media products  From my research of inspiration for video,

flashbacks and memories in Jamey Johnson's, In Colour music video were presented in black and white. I challenged this convention by reversing this, and making the coloured scenes to represent flashbacks and memories.

I did this to illustrate the present as being a depressive and sad state for the artist, who then reflects on a happier state, which is in colour. I think this effect worked well as it corresponds to the meaning of the lyrics.

Conventions I challenged from real

media products  Research from inspiration for music video

involved artists that were older than the age of 25. This portrayed them as mature. I challenged this convention by portraying my artist as mature, but who was only the age of 18.

I feel that the same effect was created by using editing effects to create a believable and realistic narrative, as well a representational image of my artist that would attract the target audience.

Digipak The digipak used conventions of other media products as it

followed the continuity feature between products. I thought this was a good idea to incorporate within my own work as it gives the audience a reinforced image of how the artist is intended to be portrayed and promoted. I decided to apply the black and white theme from the music video into the digipak because I thought it was an effective way in creating an image motif and to portray the type of genre that the album  and artist was based around.

I incorporated a barcode and the Domino Records' into my digipak to portray what the genuine product would look like. This follows institution conventions, as these features are used within every CD  that is printed, which allows the  CD to be sold and purchased in retail stores such as HMV.

CD Design

Franz Ferdinand’s CD album, influenced me to use conventions that they had incorporated onto their CD. It made sense to me to use Franz Ferdinand as they are signed to the same record label as my artist, and so creates continuity in how Domino Records produces and designs their artist’s CDs

Advert

To employ a constant theme throughout the three media products, I then applied the reoccurring black and white theme to the advert.

This again follows the conventions of current media products, such as the research involving the Vines and how they illustrated the same image in both the advert and album cover. This is effective your audience know what to look for if they wish to purchase your CD.
