SIMCHAT TORAH GUIDELINESIn order to create the appropriate atmosphere in the Shul, and to protect our children on Simchat Torah, we ask for full cooperation from adults: 1. Zero tolerance for alcohol on the Hahn Judaic Campus on Simchat Torah night 2. Alcohol is restricted on Simchat Torah Day to the Social Hall and to the Hashkoma Minyan Aliyot rooms which will be under supervision.

ARBA MINIM (The Four Species) GENERAL LAWS• There is a mitzvah to hold the following four species: an etrog, a lulav, three hadasim (myrtle branches),

and two aravot (willow branches). The exact identity of the species is known to us on the basis of unbroken oral tradition.

• The Arba Minim are taken all seven days of Sukkot except on Shabbat .• The mitzvah of the four species must be performed during the daytime.• Children who are trained to observe the mitzvah of the four species must use a “set” which satisfies all

the conditions which would be proper for an adult to use.• This year, on the first day of Sukkot, the following blessings are made: 1st. 2nd. On . On subsequent days only the first blessing is made.• One should stand when reciting the blessing and taking the four species. Since the blessing must immediately precede the performance of the

mitzvah, one should pick up the four species with the etrog upside down, make the blessing, and then turn the etrog upright.• One takes the etrog in his left hand and the other three species in his right hand. According to Ashkenazic custom, a left handed person holds

his lulav in his left hand. However, the setting of the haddasim and avrot is the same as everyone else. The Sephardic custom is that even a lefty holds the lulav in the right hand. The shidra - central spine of the lulav should face towards the person. The lulav, hadasim and aravot are bound together with lulav leaves. The hadasim should be on the person’s right and the aravot on his left, and the hadasim should be higher than the aravot.

• After taking the four species, one points them three times in each direction in the following order: East, South, West, North, up and down.• It is proper for there to be no separation between one’s hands and the four species. Thus, if one puts on tefilin during chol hamoed, he should

remove them before taking the four species.• Some have the custom to take the four species and recite the blessing in the sukkah.• One may not eat before one takes the four species.

REQUIREMENTS FOR EACH OF THE FOUR SPECIESEtrog

• An etrog is unfit if it is smaller than a walnut, dried up, or punctured.• Some etrogim naturally grow with a pitum (a protuberance at the opposite end from the point of detachment from

the tree); some do not. If an etrog naturally grows with the pitum, then it is unfit for use if the pitum has become completely detached.

Lulav• A lulav is unfit if its tip is broken off, or dried up, or if its shidra (central spine) is split the majority of its length.

Hadasim• The hadasim must be at least nine inches long.• The leaves of the hadasim must completely cover the stems; and for at least the majority of this length (starting from the tip, but not necessarily

in succession), the leaves of the hadasim must grow in clusters of three from the same point on the stem.• The tips of the hadasim must not be broken off or completely dried up. Most of the leaves must not be so dried up that they are white and split

at the touch of the fingernail.Aravot

• The aravot must be a species of which the stems will eventually turn red upon maturity. • The edges of the leaves of aravot must be either smooth or obtusely serrated, not acutely serrated; not acutely serrated.• The minimum length of the aravot is nine inches.• If the tips of the aravot are broken off or dried up, or if most of the leaves are so dried up that they split at the touch of a fingernail, the aravot

are unfit for use.

TREATMENT OF THE FOUR SPECIESThe most successful method to preserve the hadasim-avrot, is to provide a large plastic bag or sheet in which to place the entire hadasim-avaros unit. A water saturated sponge or cloth toweling is placed in this bag to provide a moist atmosphere. Upon returning from the Synagogue, the entire unit is slipped off the lulav, put in the plastic bag and placed in the refrigerator. Care must be taken not to tear off the leaves.
