A Systems Approach

In order to remain competitive in the market place, the Colusa Miliket company strive to run their plant in the most stringent and efficient manner and believe that a systems approach is the most effective way in which to realise this. In early 2012 the company completed the establishment of both the quality management system ISO 9001:2008 and the environmental management standard ISO 14001:2004. In 2014, the company was also certified to the Safety management system HACCP Code:2003, and the Food Safety Management Systems ISO 22000:2005.

Case Study Snapshot

The Colusa Miliket Foodstuff is a Joint Stock Company produces a range of processed foods from wheat powder and rice grains, mainly soft rice noodles, instant rice soup and vermicelli, incorporating many ingredients such as soya sauce, chilli sauce and MSG.

Reduction of 1,700 tons CO² a year

> 200m³/day wastewater reduction

Reduction of energy consump-tion 450 TOE a year

energy cost reduction: more VND 1 billion a year

Performance Improvement

To ensure the success of the system implementation, the Colusa Miliket Company engaged with the ECC-HCMC whose representatives were under the instruction of UNIDO international experts through a capacity building program. Through this collaboration, the Company has become the first business in Ho Chi Minh City to become certified to the International Energy Management Standard ISO 50001:2011. The significant savings obtained are clearly evident; the initiatives identified through the system have delivered a 12% improvement in energy performance on the 2011 baseline figures when normalised with production for 2012. A further 12% improvement in energy performance has been achieved in the first three months of 2013, a performance trend which is expected to continue as the system evolves.

Colusa Miliket Energy Performance

On the basis of the data provided by Colusa Miliket, after the introduction of the Energy Managemnt System measures, it was possible to see 12% savings in energy consumption.

TOE/Ton

Given the success of implementing other standards and the pre-existing focus on the energy consumption of the company, the natural progression was to implement the International Energy Management System Standard ISO 50001:2011. To do this, the Colusa Miliket Company joined hands with the Global Environment Facility (GEF)-funded project, “Promoting Industrial Energy Efficiency through System Optimization and Energy Management Standards” in Vietnam. This project, jointly implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT), has supported the Colusa Miliket Company in the establishment of an Energy Management System and subsequent ISO 50001 certification.

Insulation of steam and condensate distribution systems

Replacement of old steam traps

Installation of variable speed drives on fans and motors

Focus on the operation and control of the production lines

Replacement of T8 compact fluorescent bulbs with T5 bulbs

Using Innovative Methods to AchieveLarge Savings at Low Cost

As part of the system, a focused data driven approach to the improvement of energy performance was put on the most significant energy-users onsite. The initiatives identified have resulted in a 12% improvement in energy performance on the 2011 baseline figures. A further 12% improvement was achieved in the first three months of 2013, a performance trend which is expected to continue as the system evolves.

Raised energy awarness among employees

Improved energy performance of equipment operation

Improved monitoring of fuel purchases

Focused on regular and ad-hoc data collection, monitoring and analysis

Continuous Improvement at all Levels of the Organisation for Continued Success

Through the implementation of the EnMS a solid structure has been put in place to ensure the continuous improvement of energy performance at the Colusa Miliket Company: “It is through cost reductions such as this that our future and the future of all our employees remain secure.”With continued managerial commitment and support from the UNIDO-trained national experts, the Colusa Miliket Company will continue to take a structured approach to energy management and implement operational improvements for enhanced energy performance.
