• Purpose• Funders/Partners• Website Link• Industry Engagement• Integration into Curriculum• MHC Community Outreach

Page 10: Innovation, Scholarship & You

Purpose

• Acquire advanced manufacturing equipment to bring 3D printing and scanning capabilities to the southeast Alberta region

• The primary audience for these capabilities small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) community

• Emphasis facilitating growth of Southeast Alberta’s Unmanned Vehicle Systems (UVS) cluster

Boyer’s Model of Scholarship

Boyer (1997) Scholarship reconsidered: Priorities of the professoriate. San Francisco: Jossey-Bass4 types of scholarship1. Discovery2. Integration3. Application4. Teaching

Page 18: Innovation, Scholarship & You

• Integration – Interpret use of knowledge across disciplines

• Collaborating with colleagues to design and deliver a core course

• Coxal bone in Sketchfab in Anatomy

Page 19: Innovation, Scholarship & You

• Application– Aid society and professions in addressing

problems• Serving industry as an external consultant

– Student Capstone/applied research projects

Page 20: Innovation, Scholarship & You

• Teaching*– Study teaching models and practices to achieve

optimal learning• Developing and testing instructional materials• Coxal bone in Sketchfab

What are best practices that you are incorporating in your teaching/curriculum delivery?

Innovation and Applied Research

Innovation 1. Webster online: A new idea, method or device.

2. Peter Drucker: Change that creates a new dimension of performance.

3. Joseph Schumpeter: The introduction of new goods, new methods of production,

the opening of new markets, the conquest of new sources of supply and the carrying out

of a new organization of any industry.

Page 22: Innovation, Scholarship & You

Applied Research1. Association of Canadian Community Colleges 2011: Applied Research has the

potential to introduce new products or processes which can increase productivity,

preserve or create jobs, contribute to the growth of a company, thus supporting

community and regional development. 2. Government of Canada: Work undertaken to advance scientific knowledge with a

specific practical application in view. This type of research advances the current

understanding of scientific principles, methodologies or relations.

3. OECD 2012: Applied research is original investigation undertaken in order to

acquire new knowledge. It is, however, directed primarily towards a specific practical aim or objective.
