Thank you for your support. The collection for the weekend of Sept. 17-18
This Gospel challenges us: how we can live a happy life while so many
other people suffer around us? You are not condemned for being rich, you are
condemned for not sharing what you have. Your wealth is a gift from God.
He has not given it to you to selfishly use it for yourself alone. That is the message
Pope Saint John Paul II gave during his first visit to the US in 1979 during Mass in
Yankee Stadium: “We cannot stand idly by, enjoying our own riches and freedom,
if in any place the Lazarus of the 20th century stands at our doors… The rich man and
Lazarus are both human beings, both of them equally created in the image and
likeness of God, both of them equally redeemed by Christ at a great price, the price of
the precious blood of Christ… The poor of the United States and of the world are your
brothers and sisters in Christ. You must never be content to leave
them just the crumbs of the feast” (Homily, Oct. 2, 1979).
This Gospel warns the rich not to be blind to the needs of the poor.
They have the obligation to share. The rich man is punished, not because
he is rich – a gift from God – but because of his selfishness.
Saint Augustine puts it beautifully: “Lazarus was received into heaven because
of his humility and not because of his poverty. Wealth itself was not what
kept the rich man from eternal bliss.
His punishment was for selfishness and disloyalty” (Sermon 24, 3).
Let us pray for the grace of generosity so we can share what we have with
those who have not. We make our prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen.

AÑO DE MISERICORDIA
PAPELES INVERTIDOS
¡Que papeles tan invertidos son la historia del hombre rico y de Lázaro en
la lectura del Evangelio de este domingo! El hombre pobre que una vez mendigó el
pan al lado de la mesa del hombre rico está con Dios para siempre, y el hombre rico
está en el tormento perpetuo del infierno. Sin embargo, Jesús no recalcaba la
diferencia entre rico y pobre. El prestaba atención a las decisiones que ellos hicieron
en la vida. El hombre rico estaba tan involucrado en su riqueza que él no tenía
ninguna preocupación por su bienestar espiritual. Incluso la presencia del hombre
pobre a su puerta no era bastante para conmover su conciencia y
moverlo a la compasión.
Siendo torturado en el infierno, el hombre rico lanzo un grito al Padre Abraham para
conseguir alivio. Abraham contesto, “Aparte de esto, hay un gran abismo entre
nosotros y ustedes; de modo que los que quieren pasar de aquí allá, no pueden,
ni de allá tampoco pueden pasar aquí” (Lucas 16:26). En otras palabras, no había más
oportunidades. Mientras vivimos en esta tierra un tiempo, Dios quiere que nosotros
traigamos honor y gloria a su nombre. El lugar del hombre rico en el infierno era
permanente y sin cambio. Su oportunidad para tomar una decisión de encontrar a
Dios fue cuando él todavía estaba vivo, y él cerró los oídos.
La parte de su tortura era vivir con la pena eterna.
¿Demora usted el pensar en Dios hasta un mejor tiempo? Aquel “mejor tiempo”
podría no llegar. Jesús espera tener noticias de usted ahora mismo.
No aplace la decisión más tiempo. Pida a Dios que entre en su corazón…
Querido Señor Jesús, entra en mi corazón. Prepárame para la eternidad.
Dame esperanza para el futuro.
