Human resources assessment:
HR department hires any person in DPS. The HR department is a core department with links to all other departments.
At DPS, Human resource is given special attention; employees are given opportunities for career
development as well as personal growth. All employees have the right to opt for any course they
want to attend, if they feel that the deficiency of a certain skill set is acting as a hindrance in their
good performance at work. Employees are then sent on “one day classroom sessions”, where
they are taught about a certain skill set. These sessions are arranged from time to time. All
management training officers (MTOs) are trained for the period of 3 months.
Employees at DPS get two major forms of bonuses: yearly bonuses, which include “Eid
bonuses” and the other category is performance based bonuses. All employees at DPS are
allowed 35 off days other than the weekly or occasional holidays. Out of these 35 holidays, 15
vacations per year are relaxation holidays and the other 25 are sick leaves.
Keeping in view the valued clients and the need for constant and effective communication of
information, DPS have designed an effective human resource system. As they pursue the path of
excellence, customer satisfaction remains their priority. DPS quoted here; “It is only when we
know our customers better, can we deliver a higher quality of services, thereby adding synergy to
our existing management expertise, financial strength and profitability.”
Marketing Analysis:
DPS is in the B2B industry so as far as marketing is concerned they don’t believe in doing
intense marketing campaigns, because they don’t have a large target audience. In B2B the
customers are few & well known, so according to DPS there is no need to do marketing of their
products & services.
Mostly they participates in different tenders to get projects, other than that their existing clients
can also spread a positive word of mouth about them.
For understanding the current market they do market search, Good market research and analysis
reduces the risk of making the wrong decision. So, whether they wish to launch a new product,
15
extend an established brand, plan market diversification or simply assess a current situation or
trend, Business Advantage will provide the solutions.

Facts & Figures:
PAKISTAN IT & ITES INDUSTRY- A TRANSFORMED INDUSTRY
The Pakistani IT & ITES industry today has an impressive story to tell. Much like the successful
startup that one would have not heard of a few years ago but all of a sudden it is the talk of the
town. And then you would wonder: why didn’t I see that coming?
$2 BILLION ESTIMATED SIZE OF THE IT INDUSTRY TODAY
From its nascent beginnings in the late 1980s, the industry has successfully arrived to a point
where its value proposition has been validated over and over again. he largest members are
grossing 15-25 million dollars in revenues, and receiving 100 million dollar valuations. Most
tech companies are growing in excess of 30% a year annually. The industry as a whole is doing
over 2 billion dollars a year in revenue, up from less than a billion dollars a few years ago.
39% GROWTH IN SOFTWARE & SERVICES SECTOR FOR 2007 – 2008
About half of this growth is coming from foreign, software and high end services projects. IBM,
Cisco and Microsoft are expanding Pakistan operations aggressively while several startups are
now backed by VCs such as ePlanet Ventures, Motorola, Adobe and Innovacom1.
FROM 41% GROWTH IN EMPLOYMENT OF PROFESSIONALS
Current growth rates indicate that the industry will exceed the 11 Billion USD mark within the
next 5 years. What other sectors and countries have achieved in 15-20 years, Pakistan’s
technology scene is poised to achieve in less than a decade.
Putting it all together, the Pakistani Technology industry is very different from what it was in the
early 1990’s. From 4 founding companies in 1994, PASHA’s current membership exceeds 370.
From 4,200 employees in 2004, current employment is at 12,000 and rising.

Statistics of Pakistan’s IT Industry:
About P@SHA
Pakistan Software Houses Association for IT and ITES (P@SHA) was initiated by a number of
software houses in an attempt to create a functional trade association for the IT industry in
Pakistan. Aiming to protect the rights of its members; P@SHA lobbied with the government to
initiate policies and create an environment that would attract more firms to join the industry.
Over the course of the last fifteen years, P@SHA has broadened its scope to include other IT
enabled services companies such as Internet Service Providers, Call Centers etc.
Today over three hundred and fifty companies are active members of P@SHA, thus
demonstrating how in the long run P@SHA has achieved its aim to help firms establish
themselves providing assistance to help them gain access to potential clients, locally and
internationally.
P@SHA acts as a voice of the industry. Over the years it has dealt with issues that no company
could manage single handedly; such as providing input on policies , legislation and incentives
18
related to the industry, for organizations in the IT industry. Sponsored career events and salary
surveys are also conducted regularly to assist in the growth of a dynamic sector.
P@SHA has made consistent efforts to ensure that the right policy frame works are employed for
continued growth and development. The Government is also being encouraged to act as a
facilitator in creating a certain consistency in growth rates. Efforts to promote Pakistan’s IT
industry internationally are being channeled through trade and technical delegations sent to all
corners of the world.
P@SHA has gained international recognition by having won several awards in the Asia Pacific
ICT awards. Pakistani companies are involved in leading edge work, thereby helping the
software; services and outsourced industry grow at an enormous pace.
Competitor Analysis:
Major Competitors of DPS:
Netsol Technologies Ovex Technologies LMKR Crescent Technologies Intelligentsia Software (Pvt) Ltd. ESS-Leadership & Management Solutions Co. Elixir Technologies Crestar Technologies PlanetBeyond (Pvt) Ltd
Technology Analysis:
The current situation of IT industry is much better & much different. Now they have professional equipment & heavy servers. The hardware is not a issue for them anymore, there are a lot of hardware providers are working in Pakistan like Cisco. The internet facilities are much better & broadband facility is not very expensive now.
IT industries are mostly using micrsoft.net technologies for developing the software. Other than that Oracle technologies have also been used.
For web development they are using, JAVA, ASP.Net, PHP. Now in coming years most of the IT companies will try to shift themselves to product oriented companies. Mean to say they will not wait for the projects but made their own products & sell them to customers & other
19
businesses. Android is a good example, IT professionals are shifting towards developing Android Applications.
Internship in BDCS Department
Business Development & Consulting Services is a support department to the marketing department. They are working on the back end of the marketing department & they are directly linked to the developer. So BDCS have both the technical people & people from the marketing background.
In summer 2010 I started searching for a internship. Computers are my personal field of interest, as I am also a graphic designer. I send my CV to DPS & got their respond after few days. They offered me an internship of six weeks. I have been selected in a BDCS department, and it was a great opportunity for me to learn about the IT industry.
In the first week of internship, no task was assigned to me. They just call me in every meeting so that I understand what is actually happening. I started learning different terms like SRS (Software Requirement Specification) & SDS (Software Design Specification) which I didn’t know previously.
Creating SRS & SDS is also one of major tasks of BDCS department. Then in second week I heard that DPS got a new project from Ministry of Population Welfare. Now in second week I have some knowledge of creating professional presentations, Expression of Interests & Request for proposals. So they assigned me a task to work with 2 other colleagues who were working on Expression of Interest. Expression of Interest is a detailed document which tells the customer that this is how we understand your problem, & in this specific way, we will solve it. EOI also tells about the previous experience of company to customer. So in second week I regularly work on the EOI.
In third & fourth week I started learning the way to create professional marketing management presentations for customers. It is a very valuable experience for me, as one of my presentation I selected & my team lead used it to present it in front of client. The presentation was about the DPS Telco Solutions.
In the last two weeks my team lead has assigned me tasks to work on proposal & give some new ideas to develop products for DPS.
I have given three proposals to DPS. First one is about the e-commerce solutions for retail stores in Pakistan, then web solutions for different companies who want to advertise on web. The last proposal was somehow very unique & much appreciated by my team members. And the idea was to provide online Quran teachers to foreign countries. The teacher will teach Quran to students through video calling or conferencing. I also gave a presentation in front of my team lead & the
20
head of marketing. They appreciated me a lot. Other than that I also took an initiative & tried to change the format of their presentations which the made for their clients.
Identification of a Main Problem
DPS is not emphasizing on advertising. But current situation of business is different, in order to capture a market, advertising in very important, as the Indian Company Accenture is doing.
DPS has a very small setup in Islamabad and the work environment is not very good as it should be.
DPS is focusing on projects; they find different projects of companies and work on them. They are not focusing on developing their own products which they can sell to B2c or B2B, which is a major drawback.
They are not offering much internship to IT students. They are not much recognized in the IT world as compared to Teradata, Netsol & Oracle.
Findings
The employees are satisfied with their salaries but due to work environment they are not fully satisfied with their jobs.
DPS have some highly talented people among the developers. DPS have good business relations with the Government of Pakistan. That is why they
have done a lot of work with different ministries.
Recommendations
They should start developing application for different mobile OS. It has a great market these days.
They should create a good working environment & made a good setup in Islamabad. Necessary Advertising should be done. New products (softwares) should be developed to capture market. They should develop a dynamic website of their company.
Conclusion
It is the age of globalization; the technology has changed the world into global village. IT has revolutionized everything even the businesses. Now people are forgetting the conventional way of doing business and now their thinking is that business cannot be done without IT. From every retail store to large firms they need automated technologies to run their businesses. For this purpose they need IT solutions & IT solutions can be provide by the software hubs like DPS.
So it can be concluded that our IT industry is growing and at the moment its future seems secure.
21
The economy of the country will boom with the investment favorable policies and their smooth implementation. The role of IT in today’s economy have become an important one and it is expected to experience further growth in future which is to some extent good for our economy but it might bring with it some drawbacks. So steps should be taken to turn these drawbacks of banking sector into its advantages.
