same, especially the colour?

Toki from Soweto

Dear Toki,You can print the style, but you have to un-

derstand it’s hard for a stylist to get the exact

colour from a printed picture. Go through the

colours your hairdresser has on offer as most

stylists today make their own. Also keep in

mind, the exact colour results does depend on

the condition of your hair before the colour.

Happy New Year to us means changing your style!

It’s the start of a new year and what better way to give it a kick start by changing your style. In this issue we take a look at new styles for 2015. From vivacious volume like J.Lo, bold colours like Kyle Jenner, short and sweet like Demi, perfect pony tails like RiRi and the new ‘Buzz Word’ (Buzz cut is edgy and fresh, but definitely not for the faint at

heart. It’s not only for the boys anymore, everyone from Demi Lovato to JWoww have all tried undercuts. Why not make an impression in 2015 with a shaved side?) Or ‘Lovely Lobs’ - When debating if you should cut long locks short, a bob is a safe option for the cautious. Bobs in 2015 are textured and choppy, like Halle Berry’s recent change and a perfect product to try is Texture Advance Gary Rom Hairdressing to help you control your bob style. From page 45 we give you the low-down on new looks for this year. January is always a tough month! Payday always seems so far away… in this issue we give you 10 money saving hair tips to help you through the January month on page 55, you can still look fabulous on a budget. We show you how. GIULIANAHAIR BY

She’s one of the most sought-after stars — and so his her hair!

By Angela Bekiaris

Giuliana Rancic might have become famous for her work as a present-er on E! News, but she is officially one of the biggest celebrities in

Hollywood at the moment. With her own reality show, Giuliana & Bill, with husband Bill Rancic — famous in his own right after being named the first Apprentice in the USA — her own clothing line, G By Giuliana, her own signature brand wine, Xo, G, and her work on E!'s red carpet as well as co-hosting Fashion Police, Giuliana has become a household name. And while she’s clearly talented in her field, she has managed to grab the attention of men and

women around the world with her trendy style, bubbly personality and gorgeous hair. After sporting long locks for years, the star underwent a drastic makeover last year when she chopped them off and showed off her new bob. Then this year she dyed the bob platinum blonde! With her slim physique, great taste in fashion and fabulous new hair do, Giuliana is gracing magazine covers, sizzling on the red carpet and making a name for herself not just as a presenter in Tinseltown, but an icon — and making us all want the new Giuliana Cut.

While juggling a full plate on E! as well as with son Duke, Giuliana admits that finding time for the spa is always easy. “I like to visit a spa every few months or so for a great massage or facial. Keeping up on beauty maintenance like that just helps me feel fresher, stronger and more beauti-ful. It’s a great indulgence when the timing works out — I love the relaxation and serenity,” she says. “My first spa experience was as a teen-ager in Italy,” she reveals, adding “My husband turned me on to Thai Massage.”

“People always talk about how important it is to have a date night, but I think there’s a lot of pressure to plan those nights. If you feel like you have to get dressed up and go out, well let’s be realistic – we’re so exhausted as new parents that will never happen and the next thing you know six months have passed.” Instead, she recommends having a ‘date night’ on your own terms. “The other night Bill and I had a date night and all that meant was watching TV and eating takeout. We put the baby to bed and then – instead of sitting on the couch or pulling out our com-puters – we decided to make it a point to go to bed early and watch TV and just be together and talk.”

While some feel that she could add a few kilos, Giuliana and Bill are very health conscious. The star nourishes her body with nutrient packed foods — and sources say she naturally is not hooked to junk and unwholesome foods and copious wholesome foods in her diet. Giuliana makes sure that her diet renders her sufficient energy to perform intense workouts. According to insiders, she uses workouts as a medium to keep her from stress and negative emotions. After participating in a half marathon, both Gi-uliana and Bill fell in love with running. Giuliana reportedly hits the gym six days a week and

executes workouts for 45 to 60 minutes. She counts on interval training while maintaining ad-equate mix of cardio and weight lifting. Besides being a workout addict, she is also addicted to reading fitness magazines and articles, updat-ing herself with the latest diet and exercises and incorporates the ones which sound most appealing to her.But she does have a sweet tooth, but manage to swap her cravings for fruit. She also keeps nutritious snacks such as nuts, granola bars, avocados etc. handy with her and consumes them whenever she feels hungry.

Being on the red carpet so often and looking so fabulous isn’t as easy as it looks. How does G prepare her-self for it? “I almost always get a spray tan. It gives the perfect natural glow without harming my skin. I also always make sure to get a fresh manicure before I hit the red carpet. There’s nothing worse than chipped nails holding a microphone in front of millions of people on live TV!” As for her best-kept beau-ty secret, Giuliana says: “I always carry my makeup bag with me everywhere I go. Never know when an emergency situation (like seeing Bradley Cooper at the market) may arise!”

REDCARPET REQUIREMENTS

When going blonde, Giuliana took to Instagram with a selfie, of course, saying: “Hope it’s true what they say.. #BlondesHave-MoreFun”. But what made her do it? “My son is the reason I cut my hair,” she said at the time of the big chop. “I had long, long hair for years and years — ever since I can remember — probably since I was about 16. So I cut my hair because I wanted to spend

more time with Duke and less time blow-drying my hair. And it’s worked, it’s helped so much. I don’t even have to think about it anymore — it lets me wor-ry less about the things that don’t really matter, so I can spend more time with the people who really do matter.” Giuliana’s new look not only ac-centuates her bone structure but enlightens her facial features.

DYE FORHAIR TO

Want to colour your world but worried hair colourants can cause cancer? We explore whether there is

any truth to the rumour.

By Vanessa Papas

There is nothing more gorgeous than locks drenched in deep, rich colour from fire engine red and spicy plum to mocha brown and cobalt black. Changing your hue is one of the

easiest and quickest ways of expressing your playful and artistic side. Think Balayage, ombres, two-tone hair colour variations, dip-dyes and highlights. With so many different colour options to choose from you’ll be itching to colour your world. But before you head to your favourite salon and make the change, you should know the possible health risks involved. We chat to the Anisha Patel, owner of Midori eco Hair & Beauty Salon, based in Green Park, Sandton — an Eco Park that promotes green

living to find out if there’s any truth in the rumour that hair dye can cause cancer. People are attracted to hair dye for a vast number of reasons including grey coverage, enhancing natural tones and of course for a permanent or temporary different tone to your natural colour. Colour, if done correctly, has the ability to improve hair condition, as well as highlight your natural complexion.“There are different types of hair dyes used in salons as well as sold over-the-counter,” says Anisha. “Permanent dyes grow out and a touch-up is needed every six to 12 weeks on the regrowth area only. Semi-permanent dyes wash out after a maximum of two weeks of regular shampooing and do not contain Ammonia. As no colour

is deposited inside the hair shaft, this colour is great for changing or enhancing tones, but will not cover your greys. Demi-permanent dyes colour without damaging your hair. They don’t contain Ammonia but do have a small amount of peroxide to open the cuticle slightly so colour is absorbed and typically lasts 12 to 20 shampoos. They are very popular among European clienteles whereas South African tend to opt for Permanent and Semi-permanent dyes.” Anisha explains there are a number of toxins found in hair dyes and because your scalp has a rich blood supply there is a very real risk that the toxins in hair dyes are distributed throughout your entire body. “Over 5000

different chemicals are used in hair dyes, 80 of which are reported to be found carcinogenic,” says Anisha. “In the mid ‘70s manufacturers changed the components in hair dyes to eliminate these toxins. Since then there have been lots of studies to try and pinpoint the chemicals that can be cancerous. It is still left to the client to decide whether to colour or not, but as stylists we try and limit colouring hair of pregnant women (especially those in their first trimester) or breastfeeding mothers. Phenylenediamine (PPD) is mostly found in permanent dyes and promotes long lasting colour. This ingredient is highly toxic and is also found in a number of hair dyes. PPD is a major offender in cases of dermatitis

around your scalp, behind your ears or on your face. This condition is also present in men who dye their moustaches, sideburns or beards. The severity of inflammation depends on the strength of the chemical, the duration and location of exposure, and the condition of the skin at the time of contact. Scientists have found that PPD also increases the likelihood of one contracting bladder cancer. One study of nearly 900 people found that women who used permanent hair dye at least once a month were twice as likely as women who did not use permanent hair dye to develop bladder cancer. Meanwhile, those who reported regular use of the hair dye for at least 15 years were more than three times as likely to develop bladder cancer as non-dye users.”Other hair dye ingredients include Persulfates, which is found in some bleaches and often leads to skin irritations, asthma, lung infections and even rheumatoid arthritis; coal tar, a known carcinogen (one investigation found that 71 percent of hair dyes contain coal tar); Formaldehyde, a preservative linked to cancer, developmental and reproductive toxicity and more; DMDM Hydantoin, another preservative that is a known immune system toxin (and has been restricted for use in cosmetics in Japan) and Eugenol, a fragrance ingredient that is associated with cancer, immunotoxicity, neurotoxicity and allergies.“In South Africa, hair dyes are regulated and it’s required by law that all the ingredients must be labelled on the containers to inform consumers of potential health risks and hazards,” says Anisha. “It’s important that you read what the hair product contains before using it. If there are ingredients you’ve never heard of research them so you know what they can do and their side effects. To prevent adverse reactions, do a patch test before putting the dye in your hair, wear gloves when applying dye, don’t leave the dye on your head any longer than the directions say you should, and always rinse your scalp thoroughly with water after use. At Midori, we believe a good rule of thumb is that you really should not put anything on your hair that you can’t pronounce! Because of any possible risks, we only use Organic hair dye. All our dyes are made out of milk proteins and have 96 percent natural origins.”

m Opt for lighter shades over dark browns and blacks as they (generally) have a higher concentration of chemicals in them.m Avoid permanent hair colour as they’re the most toxic and opt whenever possible for semi-permanent and temporary colours instead.m Look for natural brands of hair colour that use henna, herbal dyes and vegetable dyes as primary ingredients as these are likely to be much less toxic than the average hair colour.m If you have sensitive skin or suffer from allergies choose hair salons that offer chemical-free, odour-free and herbal colourants as these tend to be less toxic.m To date, there have been fatalities linked to hair colourants. Narinder Devi, from England, died in August 2002 of anaphylactic shock a few hours after she used a store bought permanent hair dye product. Her death is still under investigation to see if the dye was responsible for the fatal allergic reaction.m Hairdressers or barbers in contact with hair dyes have five times the risk of developing cancer than those who are not in regular contact with dyes.

She might not have done much to become famous, but there’s no denying the fact Kim Kardashian is one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood…. so why not steal some beauty secrets from a girl whose career is based on being beautiful.

| January / February 2015 | CELEB STYLES 31

Kim KardashianBy Angela Bekiaris

Choose The Best Shades: Kim swears by this and is loyal to her products adding just the right colour to her cheeks, lips and eyes.

Skip Shampooing Sometimes: The reality star washes her hair every second day — and stylists have given her the thumbs up. “Don’t wash your hair every day, because that can dry it out,” says hairstylist Chris McMillan, who recommends using a gentle shampoo and conditioner a few days a week and a deep conditioning mask once a week.

Shape Your Eyebrows Properly: Kim says that women should take this beauty tip very seriously. Talking about beautician Anastasia Soare in Beverly Hills, Kim says: ”She would always say she wanted to get her hands on my brows, and I was like, ‘No, I did them my whole life myself’. Then, once she did it, I became obsessed. She waxes and then she tweezes.”

Get Max Lashes: “I layer mascaras,” says the gorgeous mom-of-one, adding “I want to learn to put [fake] lashes on.”

Create Contours: Kim has a technique she swears by. “I put on all my foundation first. I powder my face, then I put on concealer… and blend it with a pink egg-like sponge. Then I contour all here— think of a three.” [Using her finger, she draws an invisible three on each side of her face.] “I go cheekbones, under chin, then the top”

Always Remove Make-Up: “I need a makeup wipe at all times. That’s the only way I take my makeup off,” reveals the star. Experts stress that going to bed with a clean face is key for prevent-ing acne and even wrinkles.

Stash A Nail File: While Kim loves to have her nails done by professionals she always does the filing herself. “I’m OCD,” she says. “[My nails] have to be perfectly square. I carry a file with me every-where I go. I get anxiety when I get my nails done if it’s not the person I use all the time, because I don’t want to offend them when I ask to file my own nails!”

Smooth Skin Is Key: Kim, who does a lot of spray tans, says she visits a Korean spa in downtown Los Angeles for body scrubs. It’s important to always have soft, smooth skin, she adds.

Eat Right: Looking good starts from within and Kim says her cel-lulite has gotten better with diet. Sources say she typically eats oatmeal for breakfast, salad for lunch, and chicken for dinner.

Goddess Creations in Pretoria East started as a dream. The salon was founded by Elanie Beckett (Bestselling Author of Gremlin to Goddess: The Secrets For Total Transformation) in April 2012. Back then, the tiny 25m2

premises functioned primarily as a hair extensions studio, but the salon quickly gained a reputation for delivering service beyond expectations and needed to expand its premises and service range. Now, two and a half years later, the salon has relocated from the shopping centre where it opened, to a free standing building where co-owners Elanie Beckett and Monique de Franca still pride themselves on impressing and surprising every client who walks through their doors. "We are not a factory", says Monique. "Almost every salon you visit, functions as a sausage machine, focussing on pumping as many clients as possible in and out their doors in any given day. At Goddess Creations, we focus on quality, rather than quantity, making sure that every client gets only the best, exclusive luxury pampering treatment the industry has to offer." Elanie agrees wholeheartedly, adding that "The dream hasn't changed. When Monique and I opened the studio, we knew that we wanted to be different. Here in Lynnwood you will find scores of salons, each one as imperson-al as the next. Guests flock to us because they know that they can expect consistently great service with a personal touch at highly competitive prices. We know our guests by their names, we remember their stories and we build a trust relationship with them that guarantees that they visit us over and over again. We have a generous loyalty program in place, giving us another unique edge in this competitive market and guaranteeing us our

clients' unwavering loyalty." The atmosphere at Goddess Crea-tions certainly is very different from your regular hairdresser. They have managed to go beyond a ‘hairdresser’ or ‘beauty salon’ and created a very unique concept which Elanie and Monique like to refer to as a ‘Hair Sculpting Spa’. Clients love getting a relaxing Spa experience at no extra cost while they do their routine hair maintenance. "Very few of us have time to spend a whole day at an actual Spa, and even less so, every single month. Therefor, we offer services that overlap, sav-ing our guests loads of time while still giving them an unforgetta-ble experience. With us, you can get your nails done at the same time as we do your hair, or your eye lash extensions, for instance. We give free head and hand massages even as you sit with your colour developing on your hair, and reflexology right at the basin as Lettie expertly massages a standard complimentary silk treat-ment into your hair", Elanie ads. Though guests are discouraged from bringing children to the salon in order to ensure a relaxing environment for everyone, Goddess Creations offers certain days especially for the little ones. Youngsters get taught the value of self care from an early age and the experienced staff spoil the little ones as much as they do their parents. There certainly are few things that beat settling down with a glass of chilled wine after a long day at work with a team of experi-enced women indulging your every whim. Clients are excited about the exclusive range of salon products, MAIA (Spirit Of Earth), soon to be launched by this unique beauty house as the product range is anticipated to be as unique and exclusive as the salon that created it.

La Montagne Day Spa is the ideal place for you, your friends and family

to relax, unwind and revive mind, body and spirit. They host memorable events; from corporate team-build-ing to pamper parties to kitchen teas. They offer day spa packages for that mini getaway and specialised beauty treatments for those specific needs. Their staff members are trained and dedicated to guarantee professional service which

promises a day to remem-ber. Well, I'm sure that you know and expect that about every spa. And why should I write another ar-ticle claiming that this spa is bigger and better than any other. The fact that you can read this article in this magazine is a good indica-tion that La Montagne Day Spa is a quality spa with great value for money. So, why not liven up the article with some interesting trivia facts you might not have known.

Fact 1: Do you know where the word ‘Spa’ comes from? The term is derived from the name of the town of Spa, Belgium. It is commonly claimed, that the word is an acronym of various Latin phrases such as ‘Salus Per Aquam’ or ‘Sanitas Per Aquam’ meaning ‘health through water’. This is very unlikely: the derivation does not appear before the early 21st century and is probably a ‘backronym’ as there is no evidence of acronyms passing into the language before the 20th century nor does it match the original Roman name which is ‘Aquae Spadanae’.

Fact 2: Did you know, the lack of body hair was considered a sign of the classes since the Roman Empire. Wealthy women and men used tweezers, creams, and razors made from flints to remove excess hair. In fact, even pubic hair was considered uncivilized which is why many famous statues and paintings of Grecian women are so often depicted hairless. Modern day wax strips made their debut in the 1960s and quickly became the method of choice for removing unwanted hair.

Fact 3: Did you know that we have to thank Hollywood for Eyelash Exten-sions? The invention and use of false eyelashes began in 1916 when director D.W. Griffith was making his film Intolerance. He wanted actress Seena Owen to have lashes “that brushed her cheeks, to make her eyes shine larger than life.” The first false eyelashes were made of human hair woven through fine gauze by a local wig maker. They were then attached to Owen’s eyes.

Fact 4: Did you know, in the early 19th century in Greece, many upper-class women wore empty pistachio shells over their nails, slowly spreading the artificial nail trend across Europe. While Cutex introduced a liquid nail polish derived from automobile paint in 1917 already, it was only in 1954 that Fred Slack, an American dentist, invented the first artificial nail as a realistic-looking temporary replacement after breaking his fingernail at work. After experiments with different materials to perfect his invention, he and his brother, Tom, pat-ented a successful version and started the company Patti Nails.

Fact 5: Did you know that the word shampoo in English is derived from Hindustani chãmpo, and dates to 1762. Shampoo itself originated in India where it was introduced as a head massage, usually consisting of alkali, nat-ural oils and fragrances. It was introduced in Britain by Sake Dean Mahomed who used it in vapour baths where clients received a treatment of champi (shampooing). He was later appointed ‘Shampooing Surgeon’ to both George IV and William IV.

Fact 6: Most of us would like to age gracefully and still look beautiful, but as we grow older, our skin becomes drier because the oil-producing glands in our skin become less active. Using a light oil-based moisturizer will keep your skin soft and supple. Or use this simple face mask that you can make at home to hydrate your skin: Mash one banana till it is soft and mix with two teaspoons of yogurt and half a teaspoon of honey (adjust the quantities so that the mask is not too runny). Apply the pack all over your face and neck and let the mask dry completely; wash off with lukewarm water and pat dry.

Fact 7: Did you know that the most practiced form of massage in Western culture is undoubtedly Swedish Massage? Although history attributes Swedish massage techniques to the Swede Peter Henry Ling, his therapies in 1813 involved body movement rather than massage. In fact, Swedish Massage should be called French-Dutch Massage, as the Dutch practitioner Johan George Mezger, who co-founded a massage therapy association in the Netherlands in 1891, most likely developed the techniques used in ‘Swedish Massage’. It is one of those historical mistakes that still persevere today.

Eugene Venter has worked at Paul James Hairdressing for 3 years. The owner, Paul Fox whose salons have been around for 21 years says.

“Eugene is a true asset to Paul James Hairdressing, his passion and drive are what sets him aside from his colleagues but he also inspires and motivates them at such a young age. PJH stylists of the future.”Celeb Styles was lucky enough to chat to Eugene, and he shares a few secrets with us.

How long have you been working at Paul James? My career started at Paul James hairdressing in October 2011.

How long have you been a hairdresser?Been in the hairdressing industry for 3 years and loving every moment of my career.

What or who inspired you to get into hair-dressing?Seeing most of the stylists at Paul James hairdressing entering competition work and all the work they do in salon, making clients feel beautiful about themselves inspires me to be the very best I can be.

What makes a great hairdresser? You have to listen to your clients. You have to make your client happy. It’s not all about you it’s about the client. As you start out in hairdressing you have to give it your all because a good ap-prentice will be good hairdresser. Giving clients

what they want and what they need, will keep them coming back making you a successful hairdresser.

What is the one item every client should have?Professional styling products. It makes your hair so much easier to manage. A good hairstylist to give the clients the guid-ance and professional help they need to take care of their hair at home

What are the trends for summer 2015? Well my summer trend is blond, blond and blonder. A natural blond is always a favourite and as well as the ombre. A proper ombre with the right blending from dark to light is just beautiful.

What shampoo and conditioner do you recommend? It depends on the client’s hair and what their hair needs, be it more moisture or protein.

What styling products do you suggest?Loving the whole Moroccan oil styling range. It has everything a client needs, and being a well known brand clients just love it

How has the hair industry changed since you started?Clients are paying more attention to their hair. Spending more time in the salon and asking more detailed questions on styling their hair at

home.

What one top hair tip do you swear by?You must cut your hair regularly and not once a year or whenever you feel like it. A regular cut will ensure you that your hair will look and feel healthy. And let’s be honest no one likes split ends.

What’s the one product you can’t live with-out?Moroccan oil Hydration styling cream. It’s a leave in treatment leaving the hair super soft and it takes your blow wave to the next level. It’s the one product that I just can’t live without

Have you got any advice for anyone wanting to start in the industry?Passion is key. With no passion you’re not going to be the best you could be. You’re only going to do the same work over and over and it’s only going to be a job and not a career. When you start out it’s not going to be a walk in the park. You are going to have to work hard to make a success in your hairdressing career. Steal with your eyes. You have the talent around you; learn from other stylists to make yourself a better stylist.

What is your favorite perk of the job?mmmm….doing my hair for free? No just kid-ding. Getting to meet all the amazing, wonder-ful and different clients that you deal with on a daily basis. Talking to clients and connecting with clients on a whole different level.

How Can I return to my natural hair colour?

I would strongly suggest that you go into your salon for a consultation from an expert.Over the past 10 years I have seen many a head in turmoil over this — burnt off hair, cutting off everything from shoulder length and longer into bobs or even pixie cuts! There are many factors we have to look at. I am naming only a few — first is the levels of hair colour over the levels of decolourization! Stylists works on a colour chart with numbers in the system ranging from 1–12 — one being the darkest, black and twelve being the lightest blonde.

Depending on your own natural level of hair colour, and also what you want — one might have to lift a darker colour to a desired result!? Secondly, there is many a colouring technique as well to use to make the hair look natural whilst growing out.

The famous trichoptilosis (split ends), yes, this is actually a syndrome! This is usually caused by excessive heat and mechanical stress, also added excessive applications of incorrect products. Excessive heat and product strips the protective layer off the outside of the hair shaft — weakens the hair, making it prone to split ends. Mechanical damage, such as combing the hair forcefully, sometimes making the hair tangle, and then trying to comb it through, as well as repeated combing. Then there is another type of split ends, Trichorrexis nodosa that might have a genetic basis and the same environmental factors as previously mentioned makes it worse for this type of hair.Unfortunately, there is NO remedy for split ends beyond trimming; hence I say ‘prevention’.Tools of prevention: Invest in a brush that is healthy for hair, such as the Hairware Porcupine brush, or the very famous Tangle Teezer, you can buy them from your salon.Products of prevention: We are in love with Evos' End Doctor split end sealants, to seal and prevent the split ends from running up, until your next cut. Heat protectors, we swear by kerastase- Nectar thermique which is a heat protector creme packed with moisture, and then the very new Discipline range with Fluidissime- which is a spray in -for all types of hair adding high shine, controlling frizz, adds movement to hair and keeps your styling results fresh up to 72 hours!

It depends on how you handle your hair...and also what form of tool you use to tie up the hair. We are loving the new Hair bungee from Evo, imported all the way from Australia. It is a loose elastic band with hooks on either side, hook it into the hair and tie it around as tight as is healthy for the thickness of the ponytail, and hook back in. It is like performing a cute magic trick, and it doesn’t stop there, this little bungee performs other tricks to give you an array of fun updos from Lanie....to wild and wacky.

Is it damaging to wear your hair in a ponytail every day?

I have split ends but don’t want to cut my hair, how can I prevent them?

A

Q What is the best product to use to make my hair look shiny?

A Everyone wants some bling right? When we talk about having shiny hair, it isn’t always just the products. Causes can range from incorrect diet to various external factors. A product to give shiny hair, can work ideal to get shine

into healthy hair, and even add natural shine to damaged, porous and dry hair. But on the downside of this, it might not work on the root of the problem and give you repair, strength, the correct balance in moisture, amino acids and all the rest that the hair needs. Remember, healthy hair is happy hair. We are in love with the new kerastase Discipline range, high shine, taming all types of hair, hair dries two times faster than normal, and styling results lasts up to 72 hours! Also a sulphate free shampoo option in the range! This product gives you light, bouncy, shiny, anti-frizz hair, although they target curly dull frizzy hair with this range I even use it on straight and fine hair that lacks shine, because the results makes you look like you just stepped off the runway. For the health conscious, kerastase Discipline now has an alternative to the Brazilian blowout, this kerastase Discipline taming/smoothing in salon treatment lasts up to 10 washes! So anything from four to 10 weeks, depending on how often one washes the hair.

Your eating disorder isn’t just killing your body, but your hair too.

By Angela Bekiaris

Most people have eat-ing disorders because they are obsessed with looking good. The ironic

part is, an eating disorder isn’t going to just mess up your health, but it’s going to destroy your appearance too. While you are starving your body to fit into those skinny jeans, you’re going to have bigger issues when you’re spending your time trying to cover up your dry skin, hide your brittle nails and find something to brush on the top of your head. Eating disorders have a profound impact on an individual. For years, men and women have been battling disorders like anorexia and bulimia, but what they don’t realise is that they are killing not just their self-esteem, relationships and physical well-being, but their self-image too.Often associated with mood swings, anxiety disorders and personality disorders, eating disorders are also linked to substance abuse problems and obsessive-compulsive disorders. While we all have the urge and need to look and feel good, the preoccupa-tion with being thin can take over your life — you will lose the ability to see yourself as you truly are.An eating disorder can not just dam-age your health, but it can threaten

your life too. The process of star-vation affects most organ systems, and a number of health issues, such as constipation, abdominal stress, hypotension and an abnormally low heart rate can be just some of the consequences. And as if destroying your health is not bad enough, you’re destroying your appearance too. Physical signs such as acne and/or hair loss are common with those suffering from the disorder.Ironically, while you’re trying to get thin to ‘look good’ you’re not only turning into a skeleton, but a bald one too. Eating disorders can leave your hair dry and brittle, and at the worst, falling out. But what has hair loss got to do with your eating habits, you ask? Plenty. And that’s what’s scary!Hair thinning out and falling out is mainly caused by vitamin and mineral deficiencies, malnutrition and dehy-dration. And while you’re losing hair on your head, you’re growing it on your body — sources say a third of people with serious weight loss even get fine, soft hair on their face and body. While hair loss can be caused by a number of reasons — from illness, to hereditary thinning or baldness, stress and even menopause, to name

just a few — diet and poor nutrition is a major factor when it comes to thinning and loss of hair, and most people suffering from an eating disor-der are suffering the consequences. According to experts, some people see hair loss after losing more than six-and-a-half kilos, and it most com-monly appears three to six months after losing the weight. Hair also falls out when an individual is not get-ting enough protein or iron — both essential for hair growth. While we all lose hair every day, when your body is lacking protein your hair will not be able to repair and regrow itself. Anorexia (when an individual does not eat enough) and bulimia (when they vomit after eating) will result in clumps of hair coming out when your shower, brush your hair or pull your fingers through it. Your hair will get very thin as time passes. Hair loss is also due to dehydration, as those who are suffering from an eating disorder do not get enough liquid-rich food, resulting in dry skin and hair, and even brittle nails. Their consumption of water or calo-rie-free drinks is not enough to make up for what certain foods bring, such as fruits, vegetables and soups.

HAIR TRENDS

| January / February 2015 | CELEB STYLES 45

Volume, volume, volume. These are the words to live by in 2015. Voluminous equals sexy, think J-Lo. It’s the perfect look to wear from date night to office meetings. It is much easier for girls who naturally have super curly textured hair to recreate a look like Zendaya’s. If you don’t have naturally curly tresses, you can try to recreate the look with just a curling iron! Take small sections of hair and wrap it around the iron, upwards and close to the scalp. Voila! Voluminous ringlets.

Whether it’s a complete colour change or just a subtle style upgrade, start 2015 off with a fun and flirty mane that will get you noticed. A good hair day is so 2014, with these new celeb inspired styles you are in for a good hair year.

Here are our predictions of what 2015 will look like in hair. Which styles will you try on for size?

Especially shades of blue, have grown in popular-ity recently and is getting trendier by the day. Kylie Jenner comes to mind as a per-fect illustration. If you’re not com-pletely sure about this bold move, there’s always the semi-permanent option, or go for an ombre look that’s a bit more subtle. Just print out the hair colour of your favorite celebrity and head straight to your hairdresser.

A dark ombre look with golden ends is going to be a must in 2015. Khloe Kardashian or Karrueche Tran look is the way to go. Changing dark hair to light can take its toll though, so keep hair healthy by applying a hydrat-ing treatment once a week.

Good news if you finally mastered the tricky fishtail: braids are one trend that’s not going anywhere. Give the over the classic shoulder side part a modern update with braids, like Elizabeth Banks or style two pretty braids to form a crown à la Bella Thorne. The possibilities with braided styles are endless and totally appropriate for anything from work to play.

They’re certainly having their moment in the new year. We’re talking chic long bobs, cool crops and of course side shaves.

Warm brown colours are a pretty potent look. A-listers are warming up deep browns with understated highlights and darkening their blonde hair.

THE ‘WOB’HOTTEST

NEW STYLE

Nicole Ritchie

First it was the ‘bob’ and now the ‘wob’ is

the latest craze!

The ‘wob’ is the latest red carpet craze and it’s so easy to style. What is also fabu-lous about this style is that it

works for nearly everyone! The ‘wob’ style is a long wavy, chin or shoulder bob look, which brings a playful and young look to most and it’s a very simple style to maintain. If you have straight hair, you can use your curl-ing iron to create long, loose curls for those lucky people who have natural waves, you should just be able to scrunch it into place and touch up with your curling iron. For a more classy look for the evening, blow dry your hair and add a touch of serum to prevent frizz or stray hairs, create loose curls with your iron and leave the ends undone so they are straight at the bottom. Then finish off with hair spray, you hair will look fabulous in no time at all! It’s a versatile look which can take you from the office to the red carpet and look great! With the ‘Wob’ style you don’t have to compromise on length. As you hair will be long enough to be worn in a ponytail or bun.

We just loving this look at Celeb Styles!

TIPDon’t curl your whole

head..

TIPTo create the perfect ‘wob’ hairstyle, make sure you have

loads of body.

TIPIf your hair is thin ask your stylist

for more layers.

TIPIf you hair is thick, have it

texturized to remove weight.

TIPWhen curling your hair, make sure your curl small sections.

8. Avoid chipped nail polish. Add a top coat to freshly painted nails, and then again once they are dry. This makes your nail polish less likely to chip and will ensure it lasts longer.

2. Dry, flaky or chapped lips are the worst canvas for lipstick. To ensure that your pout is pucker perfect, exfoliate! Start by applying lip balm to your lips, then, using a toothbrush or clean mascara wand, gently scrub your lips and voila! You’ll have a perfect pout in less than a minute.

1. Neutrals are nice, but it’s fun to spice things up a tad. For a simple, speedy way to wear colour on your lids, go monochromatic: use three shades of the same colour. Apply the lightest all over the lid, the darkest near the lash line, and the medium shade from the lash line to just above the crease. Blend them all together and you have a totally different look.

6. Camouflage Grey Hair by using mascara if you have dark hair and blondes or redheads can try dusting roots with bronzing powder.

9. It’s well known that heat can hurt your hair, so limit the use of a flat iron to three times a week. This is also best if you want to get long hair ASAP.

3. Exfoliating is a necessity for getting a natural glowing complexion. Buff away the dead skin cells by using a light exfoliator to freshen your face every day.

10. Reinvent your old mascara wand! Don’t throw it away: clean it and use it as a brow brush instead.

11. Sometimes less is more. Don’t cake your face with moisturiser, because it will take ten minutes or more to be fully absorbed by the skin before it is ready for make-up. The best way to apply face cream is to blend a dime-sized amount on your cheeks, nose, chin and forehead instead of moisturising heavily.

BEAUTY ALERT!5. When choosing a foundation, test it on the skin near your jawline. Be sure to do this in nat-ural lighting. This way the foundation shade you choose isn’t too different from the natural shade of your neck.

BEAUTY4. Using an oil-based product to remove make-up or excess dirt from your skin can actually improve the condition of the epidermis. Why? Over-cleaning stimulates the sebum glands, which causes skin to over-produce oil. Using oil-based products will have the opposite effect.

14. Never pump your mascara! It will only allow air into the tube which will cause your mascara to dry and ultimately shorten its lifespan.

12. Don’t rub your hair dry with your towel; it will cause your hair to frizz. Instead, before getting out of the shower gently squeeze excess water from your hair. Then, wrap your hair in a towel and pat it dry to absorb any remaining moisture.

15. Make sure you clean your make-up brushes regularly to avoid a build-up of make-up residue and bacteria. You can purchase make-up brush cleaner or you can simply use shampoo and conditioner to clean them as you would your own hair. Clean brushes guarantee a super smooth and even make-up application every time.

13. Trick to getting lashes for miles? Curling lashes both before and after applying mascara. You can also re-curl them throughout the day for some extra lift. Remember to be gentle when you apply pressure with your curler.

18. Before applying bronzer or self-tan-ning lotion, mix a drop or two of the solution with body lotion. Apply to skin as you would regular moisturiser. This will ensure the cream blends in and covers skin evenly and subtly. You too can glow like JLo!

16. Are your feet weatherworn? Mash half a banana in a bowl, mix in a few drops of honey and massage into your heels. Wrap your feet in plastic wrap and allow the mixture to absorb for at least ten minutes. Rinse, then gently exfoliate with a pumice stone.

20. You can DIY bang-up bangs, like Selena Gomez. Start by gathering bangs in your non-dominant hand while holding a pair of hair-cutting scissors in the other. Pull the hair down until your thumbnail rests vertically on the bridge of your nose. Trim right around the tip of your thumb. This will give you a gently rounded arc from temple to temple, which is more flattering than a straight fringe.

19. If you tend to apply concealer first when doing make-up, rather start with the eye make-up instead. This way, you can easily clean up any resi-due that migrates below your eyes (and that could create dark shadows) with a cotton swab soaked in make-up remover. Only then apply concealer for a bright-eyed finish.

BEAUTY ALERT!

17. Save money on your beauty routine by taking care of your feet every day and increasing the amount of time in between pedicures. Simply scrub your feet with a pumice stone each morning in the shower. Once you step out and dry off, apply a moisture cream to your feet. This will keep your feet in tip top shape.

24. Apply a product containing azulene or witch hazel to help reduce swell-ing and redness that’s associated with ingrown hairs. Then, coax the in-grown hair from its location with a pair of tweezers. Don’t pull it out, though, this will only make the ingrown hair regrow the same way again.

21. Don’t douse yourself with per-fume before you leave the house. Just be-cause you can’t smell it doesn’t mean other people won’t be able to. If you wear it every day, chances are your olfactory sense has just become desensitized to the scent. Only spray or dab perfume on select spots, like your wrists, base of the throat and behind the earlobes.

25. In order to remove product build-up from hair, use a clarifying shampoo once a week. This will also help prevent dandruff and other annoying hair and scalp conditions.

23. Try to save another day before washing hair. Use a dry shampoo or wash just the top of your head (or wherever there is oil), followed by a quick blow dry. Your tress-es will look as good as new.

22. If you run out of nail polish remover, you can remove cracked or chipped nail polish by applying a clear top coat to the nail and removing it quickly with a cotton ball.

HAIR TIPS ON A

money saving hair tips to help you through the tough January month.

| January / February 2015 | CELEB STYLES 55

BUDGET

Are you broke after the December holi-day, but desperate to have your hair

done? Payday just seems so far away after Christmas. But, don’t worry; we will help you with your hair until you can get to your salon at the end of the month. Try the following…

1. Your bangs need a trim? Make sure your hair is dry and using your fingers pull your bangs forward then cut in a straight even line below where your fingers are holding them. If you are a bit nervous to cut your own bangs then ask your stylist what is his bang touch-up policy? Most of the time your stylist will do it for free!

2. Going to a function but don’t have the extra cash to have your hair done? Don’t stress, do your own hair! Create a classic bun – using a hair donut, use hairspray to keep the fly-way’s down and away you go.

3. You don’t have to use a handful of shampoo and con-ditioner all you need is a small amount in the middle of your palm and the same goes for your styling products. Another cost saving tip, only shampoo your hair every other day – your products will last twice as long.

4. Make your own shampoo; try the following to clarify your

hair of oil: Diluting 2 table-spoons of apple cider vinegar into 1 cup of water and use the mixture as shampoo.

5. Just don’t have the money to buy dry shampoo? Then try the age-old baby powder trick! Apply a small amount of powder to roots and brush it out after 5 minutes to remove excess oil.

6. Are those dark roots or grey popping through? Why not try a DIY hair colour, just until you can afford to go to a salon. Touch up your roots with at-home colour, L’Oreal’s Roots is perfect and no one will suspect your colour came from a box.

7. Wear hats to prevent the colour from fading and other damage. This will keep you out of the salon for treatments, saving you money! And hats are so in fashion now!

8. Coconut oil is a cheap and effective way to strength-en your hair, coconut oil penetrates the hair and is absorbed, strengthening and moisturizing your hair.

9. In December buy a jumbo size bottle of shampoo and conditioner.

10. All those mini shampoos and conditioner you or a friend have collected over the years on business trips, place them in your shower and work your way through them. The variety is good for your hair.

RESCUING

Your first New Year’s resolution should be to treat your beach HAIR.

By Angela Bekiaris

HOLIDAYHAIR

58 CELEB STYLES | January / February 2015 |

You’ve had a fabulous holiday. Let’s face it, there’s nothing more relaxing and joyous

than hitting the beach with friends and family and getting in loads of Vitamin D. But what we forget is, while we’re catching some waves, chilling in the sun and even taking in a game or two of beach vol-leyball, we’re not protecting our hair! Sure, you remembered to put sunscreen on every day — but did you use the right products for your hair to make sure it stayed healthy during your vacation? It’s too late now you think…. well, you can still rescue your locks. We have some great tips to help you get your hair looking and feeling like new again.

Salt Water’s Damage On The HairDid you know that while salt water is great for the skin — even helps reduce swelling and treat wounds — it can wreak havoc on your hair. Taking a dip in the ocean could leave your hair in a complete state. "Your hair's water content is what makes it stretchy, elastic and moisturized — kind of like your skin. And, similar to your skin and the rest of your body, your hair can become 'dehydrated' and dry if too much moisture is lost through evaporation. And even more so if that moisture is not replenished," Elizabeth Cunnane Phillips recent-ly told The Huffington Post. "As the sea has high salt content, it is osmotic, meaning that it leaches water out of your hair. The result? Dry, parched and brittle locks.” Celebrity hairstylist Rene Fris from New York City adds: "The hair be-comes dull, tangled, rough feeling and can be hard to comb or brush out. If you have colour in your hair, salt water damage would give it a very hard texture.” You might notice that once you have sham-pooed your hair it takes longer to blow-dry, or that you’re having problems with your curls. Accord-ing to Cunnane Phillips this is because it’s "in its worst form, salt water damage causes the ends of the hair to split, and breakage can begin.”

Get Your Hair Back Into ShapeRedelia Govender, owner of Square Bubble Hairdressing, suggests you stick to the following five steps to get your hair back into shape after spending time on the beach.Step One: Get your hands on a good moisture treatment. Being in the sun really takes a lot out of your hair so use a good hair mask and deep treatments.Step Two: A good trim helps to get rid of dry/split ends so book your appointment now. Your hair will look healthy and fresh immediately.Step Three: Use a good leave-in treatment/conditioner.Step Four: Davines Oil helps give you your shine back making your hair look smooth and shiny. Redelia suggests you use it on your locks ASAP.Step Five: Ask your stylist to rec-ommend a professional shampoo and conditioner as that immediately helps with dry, dehydrated hair.

Looking After Holiday Hair Once You’re Back HomeCelebrity hairdresser Mark Hill says putting back moisture is essential the minute you get back home. Without moisture your hair feels dry and brittle and is prone to breakage. And while the sun-kissed colour you’re left with after days, or even weeks, in the sun looks fabulous, the truth is once your tan is gone you will just look washed out. Mark sug-gests you “pop into your hairdresser to add a few richer colours through to refresh and brighten.”

Post-Beach DIY TreatmentWhip up a hair mask made out of lukewarm honey and buttermilk. The honey will restore moistureand shine, while the buttermilk will soothe dry locks and leave them silky.

Major Moisture BoostFor a major moisture-boost that will target split ends, whisk together two eggs, a few tablespoonsof olive oil, half of a ripe avocado and 56.6 grams of purified water. Work the mixture into hair with your fingertips, leave on for 10 minutes and then wash out.

Looking like our favourite stars is always a priority. So why not steal some of their secrets on how to keep your hair looking shiny and gorgeous.

• Errol Douglas, who styles celebs like Cat Deeley and Natalie Appleton says: “For hair that’s extra shiny, turn the temperature down on your shower once you’ve rinsed out the conditioner, and blast your hair with the coldest water you can handle. Then towel dry, and apply a light serum while the hair is still wet. This starts the drying process and

reduces the need for excessive blow-drying which reduces shine.”• Adam Reed, whose clients include Kylie Minogue and Sophie Dahl, says: “If you want really glossy hair, run a bath and apply a leave-in conditioner, then wrap your head in cling film and climb into the bath. The steam will help to open the hair cuticles and allows the treatment to penetrate and really invigorate and condition hair. Relax back for 15 to 20 minutes and then rinse hair thoroughly.”• Martin Maxey, who styles Elle Macpherson and Minnie Driver, says: “Always use a conditioner on your hair because the acidity helps close the hair cuticles and make them smoother. When you’ve dried your hair, use a straightening balm but never one which contains alcohol because it tends to swell the hair cuticle.”

STYLES

64 CELEB STYLES | January/ February 2015 |

Liezel van der Westhuizen is a household name in South Africa. Being awarded many awards over the years and just lately coming 3rd in Mr & Ms Fitness SA

Championships she is truly a shining star. We caught up with Liezel as she shares her hair and beauty secrets with us.

You have had many hairstyles over the years, do your prefer your hair long or short? I love experimenting with my hair. I love trying out new hairstyles and looks.

What is your natural hair colour? My natural colour is dark sandy blonde.

How often do you get your hair cut and styled? I go every second week.

If you could have any hair-style for just one day, what would it be? I’d love to have long dark hair that I can wear in STRAWBERRY SWIRL-A simple low side bun and a gentle twist of the fringe brings simple elegance to this refined look.

Do you go to the same salon? Yes, I use Palladium Hair in Pretoria and Cape Town.

What’s your hair type? Fine Hair.Have you ever had hair extensions? Yes, I had braids by putting in blonde extensions.

Good or bad experience? I love knowing that I can have an option when it comes to changing my hair.

Do you have a Hollywood icon? Lady Gaga – love how she experiments with different hair styles and wigs and exten-sions.

What is the worst hair disaster you have ever had? I went for a brown hair colour and it turned out really bad, it didn’t suit me at all.

What are some of your make-up must-haves? Always have your own waterproof eyeliner and mascara.

Name your five make-up tips• Use a plastic spoon to easily apply mascara on your bottom lashes without getting any on the skin under your eyes.• Hold a blow dryer up next to your lash curler for about 3-5 seconds-heat works the same way as it does with your curling iron, giving you those flirty lashes.• Apply foundation in downward strokes because upward strokes will cause your ‘peach fuzz’ to stick straight up, making it more noticeable.

• Instead of tossing them in the trash when your mascara expires, wash and re-use them.• Instead of using that bulky big tube of conceal-er to cover your blemishes, rub a bit of it on an eyeliner brush for more precise control.

What are you must-have hairstyling products?• S-Factor Health Factor Shampoo and Conditioner• Bed Head Hard to Get Styling wax• Bed Head Totally Baked Mousse

Name your five hairstyling tips?• Spray hairspray on hair clips to make them stay in your hair for longer• Avoid weighing down your short hair by applying root lifter or volumising mousse to your roots, and pomade and wax to your ends only.• Keep your pixie cut looking smooth and sleek all day by criss-crossing two headbands over your hair.

Gaby Hair Tips

66 CELEB STYLES | January / February 2015 |

• Leave your masque in overnight, rinse out the next day and style as normal.• Before going to the beach wet your hair and apply conditioner or a masque onto your hair to protect it from the sun and sea water. If your hair gets wet rinse well with clean water.• Always try cover up your hair when you are in the sun. • Never brush dry curly hair, rather wet it, brush out and then apply mousse or curl boost crème and scrunch or diffuse.• Always use a heat projector when applying ANY heat to your hair.

Gaby’s TIPS

Gaby Kriel has worked at Tanaz Hair salon for over a year, she has been in hairdress-er for four years. She enjoys blow drying big soft curls on long hair; she also enjoys

working with colour. Her favourite perk of the job is getting her hair blow dried by the apprentices a couple of times a week. Gaby’s career path was inspired by her mom; she says “my mom encour-aged me to get into hair dressing. She always said I had a natural talent for it. It’s also a great way to make people feel good about themselves, it’s very rewarding it’s also a commitment to accommodate my clients where ever I can, it’s hard work but you should always go the extra mile and be enthusiastic with every hairstyle you do and never stop striv-ing to improve and learn.” Gaby also believes that every client should have a masque treatment or a heat protector to keep their hair in tip top shape. Gaby says “2015 trends are baby lights, long hair, high and low pony tails, flower crowns and ombre has been reinvented to sombre, a more subtle natural look.” Products that she recommends are “Kerastase Bain Nutrition Thermique and Kerastase Fondant Nutrition Thermique I would also suggest a heat protector (Kerastase Nector Thermique) an oil (Kerastase Elixir Ultime Gold).” We asked Gaby, how the hair industry has changed since you start-ed? She says “The recessions come in so people have not had as much money to spend. Therefore we as hairdressers have had to work being more conscious of our client’s budgets and give people value for money as well as increasing our productiv-ity levels to keep the clients happy.” Gaby suggests to people starting out in the industry… “to be pre-pared to work hard and value your clients and treat them like gold as at the end of the day they are your lively hood. Don’t get into too much personal details about yourself with your clients always remember the salon is a place for them to relax and unwind, your clients are allowed to offload on you but you should not do the same to them.”
