Editor,

I have fond memories of my fi rst meeting with Erane Bocking. Standing in the lobby at the Finch site, she was wearing her Humber River volunteer vest with pride; holding a basket of multi-coloured knit slippers; helping a woman decide from the display of beautiful baby outfi ts (handmade by Erane); and selling raffl e tickets to someone else at the same time. Her friendly and determined smile was constant as she fl oated between tables of items ‘for sale’, kindly managing her team of volunteers. She was on a mission – a mission to raise money for our hospital. I was amazed.

A few days later in the Emergency Department, I saw Erane again – with the same warm smile and ability to multitask, providing one-of-a-kind customer service and helping patients to navigate their way in the ER, effi ciently, with poise and professionalism. In the last several years, through countless events and fundraising initiatives, I continue to be inspired by Erane’s ‘take charge’ attitude and generosity toward our hospital. She believes in the promising future of Humber River and her service and support is highlighted by her leadership, enthusiasm and persistence.

Upon receiving the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award (Page 5 of this issue), Erane was given a pin to wear on her lapel. The pin’s emblem “represents Canadians who selfl essly give of their time and energy to others. The maple leaf symbolizes the people of Canada and their spirit; the heart depicts the open-heartedness of volunteers; and the outstretched hand portrays boundless generosity.” Erane Bocking is truly an exemplary Caring Canadian.

Erane – warmest congratulations on your award. Thank you for your tremendous contributions; for being a role model for others to follow and for showing me that giving back matters.

magazine is published six times a year and is dedicated to highlighting the extraordinary care, service and good news from Humber River Hospital’s staff , physicians and volunteers. We take pride in sharing these stories with our patients, visitors and members of our community.

W hen planning for the new Humber River Hospital,

it was important to consider the future needs of our community and how to build for a better tomorrow. The planning team invested considerable time understanding the needs of patients, staff and physicians and researched the ‘best in class’ facilities around the world before they went to work designing the hospital of the future – North America’s fi rst fully digital hospital.

The patient experience will be changed signifi cantly with a patient and family-centred approach. It is all designed with the patient at the centre. Safe, comfortable, high quality care, delivered in a building using the latest technology to allow our staff and physicians to do what they do best: spend time with patients, talking about and providing care.

We are using the latest technology to help personalize care in a meaningful way and leverage it to enhance all aspects of quality care delivery, improving effi ciency, accuracy, reliability and safety. Our digital vision accomplishes that. Electronic patient information systems; robotics; automated guided vehicles; wireless communications systems; all designed to make each part of the hospital work together to deliver

the best care and service to the patient.

The Humber River team is working extremely hard to implement all of the projects that will bring our digital hospital to life. The Outpatient Oncology Treatment Clinic has offi cially become our fi rst fully digital unit with the implementation of MEDITECH’s Oncology Management system. Congratulations to the Clinic staff and physicians, our IS team, Professional Practice staff and everyone involved in this project!

It takes serious commitment and dedication from our staff , physicians and volunteers to change the way they work day to day. They are learning new processes and using new equipment all the while providing excellent care for our patients and achieving tremendous accomplishments. These accomplishments are what makes Humber River great and I am pleased that Dr. George Award and Erane Bocking have both recently received signifi cant honours for their leadership and caring.

Dr. George Awad received the Andrew C. Leon Distinguished Career Award from the International Society for CNS Clinical Trials and Methodology (ISCTM). This award recognizes his success in bringing

psychologists and neurologists together from around the world to standardize clinical trials for the approval of new medications. Humber River has certainly benefi ted from Dr. Awad’s vast expertise and strong leadership in our Mental Health and Addictions Department and it is wonderful to see him recognized for his commitment to safe, quality patient care.

Erane Bocking has gone above and beyond in her 45 years of caring, compassion and leadership at Humber River, earning her the prestigious Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award. She is an invaluable volunteer at HRH as a dynamic member of our Volunteer Association Board of Directors who provides caring service and executes numerous successful fundraisers. Her commitment to our hospital, patients and community is stellar; we are very fortunate to have Erane as part of our family. In our new facility, success will be achieved by our exceptional people who are committed to engaging with patients and families and delivering excellence in patient care. I want to thank you for all your hard work as we transition to our new home and reinvent patient care together.

“I had the pleasure to know Dr Awad through his literature and was always impressed by his passion for what matters for patients. George has an incredible energy and is extremely generous with his time and eff orts. During his presidency of ISCTM and beyond, he has been the voice of wisdom. Hospital News

My name is Patty Quinan and I am the Vascular Access Coordinator for the Nephrology Program at Humber River. In my role, I provide teaching and support to patients, families, nurses and physicians about vascular access. A vascular access is necessary for providing dialysis treatment to patients with kidney disease. When caring for

patients, I use my clinical expertise, knowledge of the hospital system and relationships with hospital staff to help walk patients through their fears. Patients need to know that someone is listening to them and that someone cares. I try to put myself in the patient’s shoes. Empathy is very important and helps patients to trust us. Recently, a patient with kidney disease needed to start dialysis and required a procedure to establish

a vascular access. I met with the patient and her daughter on the day of the procedure and described the procedure and initial dialysis treatment. While the patient was in the procedure room, her daughter had several questions about the procedure, the appearance of the catheter, the dialysis treatments, and what living with dialysis would be like

for her mom and family. After the procedure, I visited the patient in the dialysis unit when she was receiving her fi rst dialysis treatment and answered additional questions from the patient and her daughter. The patient thanked me and her daughter said that she was very grateful that I was able to spend so much time with her before and after the procedure. It was rewarding to hear that my care and compassion had been noticed and appreciated.

I love my job because I enjoy helping patients every day and I believe that what I do makes a diff erence.

Volunteer Donation Humber River is able to provide new wound care treatments to our patients, thanks to a generous donation from the HRH Volunteer Association that allowed our hospital to upgrade fi ve of our Vacuum Assisted Closure (VAC) therapy machines for our Wound and Skin Program.

In addition to providing negative pressure wound therapy (an integrated wound therapy system that promotes wound healing at an increased rate), these machines can instill fl uid on a regular cycle to help with the healing process for select patients. This is one way that the HRH Wound and Skin Program is preparing and upgrading for the current and future needs of our patients.

A sincere thank you to every volunteer who has contributed to making this equipment provision a reality!

Information will be ELECTRONIC

People will be MOBILE

We will be a paper-free facility with Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) across all departments. With the implementation of Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE), Physician Documentation, Nursing documentation, on-line forms and eFaxing systems, among others, we will eliminate paper charts, ensuring the EMR is accurate and available to the entire care team anywhere and anytime.

Care teams will be able to access and update patient information at computers throughout the hospital such as in exam, consult and treatment rooms, patient rooms, the Operation Room, nursing stations, and in team rooms. Notifi cations, test results and code alerts will be sent to hand-held devices so staff can respond from wherever they are in a timely manner. The Nurse Assist call system and ASCOM mobile phones will allow nurses to respond to patient needs effi ciently and eff ectively even if they are on the other side of the unit.

People will be CONNECTEDElectronic information combined with our Unifi ed Communications Infrastructure will ensure our staff and physicians have the right information in the right place to care for patients. Staff and

physicians will be able to communicate with anybody at any time, from anywhere. By being connected through our systems, we will have the information we need and know the availability of staff and physicians in the unit to deliver safe, quality care. This means greater collaboration between staff and physicians both at Humber and at other facilities.

Our digital vision supports our mission to empower patients, enhancing care and patient safety. System integration and automation will allow staff to spend more time with patients and families. Becoming a digital hospital is the start of a journey that will lead to revolutionary changes in the way we deliver medicine and many small changes that improve the lives of everybody at Humber River.

The fi rst phase of our digital vision will be complete when we move into our new hospital on October 18. This includes the implementation of the technology platform and architecture; core systems; and a large number of workfl ows and effi ciencies. The second phase will drive us to be fully paperless and will be achieved towards the end of 2016. To date, 18 projects have been implemented which are bringing our patient and family-centred care and digital vision to life.

Our digital vision can be summed up in fi ve key components: Electronic, Mobile, Connected, Automated and Empowered.

Patients will be EMPOWERED

Systems will be AUTOMATED

Patients and families will have greater access to their medical information, and control of their patient experience. They will be able to check in for appointments, receive reminders and review discharge information online, from their home computers. During their hospital stay, patients will be connected to their care team and family, have access to their EMR, be able to access educational and entertainment tools, order food, and control the room lights and heating from their Integrated Bedside Terminal.

Humber River Hospital - With Sincere Thanks

14 People Care - At Humber River

Thank You!

In January, I attended the emergency department of Humber River Hospital - Finch Site. I received the utmost attention and quality care from a team of wonderful and compassionate people. They are true angels that walk the earth. Dr. Kessie, Nurses Julie Richard, Julia McIntosh and Volunteer Sophia demonstrated a high level of professionalism, respect and expertise. My family and I are very grateful for everything they did for me. They are a valuable asset to your organization and it is our wish that they receive a commendation for their hard work and great genuine hearts. Yours truly,

Michele and Family

My mother is quite ill and had to spend quite some time in the hospital in the past. I wanted to send you a note to thank your team for once again doing a great job. I would also like to mention one of the Porter’s, Patrick. He took my mother down to her CT scan and he was absolutely wonderful! He took her for different test a few days before and my mother told me how much she liked him and how kind he was to her. My mother said Patrick reminded her of her grandson (my nephew). I had the opportunity to meet him and I was very impressed at how someone so young could be so caring and genuine. I knew that Patrick had to go to lunch, but he chose to wait until he returned my mother to her room. I was very impressed at how he chose to wait for my mother and go to lunch later instead of just leaving and sending another porter. On behalf of our families, we thank you once again for your time and your team members.

I am writing to tell you how we’re thankful to have Humber River Hospital Mental Health Program supporting our son. We are very grateful to have your kind of care during the time he has been staying in the program. It has been challenging for all of us, but as time has gone by we have worked together as a team and communicated well, which we were thankful for. Also, we want to say your work is important in helping people care and in every possible way.

Humber River Hospital - With Sincere Thanks Thank You!

I arrived in Emergency with what turned out to be a spinal injury (fracture to C1) a broken arm and a very banged up knee all from a bad fall in my home. I’m sure you can well imagine my family’s deep concern for my injuries and the critical issues surrounding my injuries and treatment. The doctors were, by all standards, exemplary in their quick response to decisions and the direction, implementation of these decisions. Please let me shine a very bright light on this team. It is their best efforts that fi nd me now looking at a terrifi c outcome. My fracture is healing very well and my broken limb has been cared for by the wonderful Dr. Heller and his team in the fracture clinic. I could go on for pages on how supportive I am of Dr. Heller and this team - I’ll leave it at a stand-up salute to a team who without doubt work so very hard for their patient - me! Without any hesitation I have to bring the extraordinary care I received from Debbie O’Brien to your attention and hope my appreciation personally reaches her. Debbie O’Brien- the pro, the angel, the glue, the comfort the reason I believe my family and I kept it together during the critical hours of the unknown. Please recognize the midnight team - both doctors through the two shifts and many nurses who gave me the best advantage of their knowledge and put it into my care.

An eternity of thanks to all concerned.

Cynthia and family.

Dear Endoscopy Staff, Just a note to thank you for the excellent care and kindness given and shown to me when I was on your unit,

Natasha

To the wonderful staff of 4C:

Thank you very much for the compassionate care you have shown to our grandmother.

With gratitude.
