    To provide the most up-to-date information about the recruitment market in 2011, JobsDB

    has compiled a salary report based on the most updated information of job seeker members.

    It is to compare the changes in salaries and bonuses obtained between 2010 and 2011, and

    to find out the latest job-changing situation among job seekers in Hong Kong.

    Scope and Methodology

    1. Objective

    The aim of this survey is to collect information on the salary adjustment of job seekers in different job functions in HongKong between 2010 and 2011. Information on bonus and double pay for 2010 was also collected for analysis. These findingswill help:

    1) job seekers review their present salaries and adjust their expected salaries / benefits when they go job hunting.

    2) companies make informed hiring decisions, and adjust the salaries and benefits of current staff.

    3. Datum Point

    Present basic monthly salaries (excluding any bonuses, but including commission) of surveyed job seekers as at 1 March2011 were recorded and adjustment of basic monthly salaries compared with those in 2010 was also captured.

    4. Data Collection Method

    The survey was conducted by an online questionnaire. Job seekers were invited to fill in the questionnaire from 7 March to16 March 2011.

    5. Data Analysis

    Surveyed job seekers were requested to provide data of their basic monthly salaries as at 1 March 2011, recent salary

    The data was analyzed to determine the arithmetic average for salary adjustment, bonus and double pay received. Theupper and lower 5% of the data were being trimmed to avoid the extreme values.

    Analysis was conducted to identify any differences that might exist:

    1) in job-changing situations comparing 2010 and 2011

    2) in salary and bonus adjustment among 12 job functions (Percentage of monthly salary adjustment in 2011 by position willonly be shown if sufficient data is collected for calculation)

    Definition

    Basic monthly salary (HK$): the present monthly salary excluding any bonuses (both guaranteed and non-guaranteedbonuses) but including commission in a particular job position. The present salary was recorded as at 1 March 2011.

    Average: a mathematical average of a set of data values (basic monthly salaries, salary adjustments, and bonus received).The upper and lower 5% of the data were being trimmed to avoid the extreme values.

    2.1 Job hunting status of respondents in previous year

    Survey data shows that among the respondents who are employed, 30% of them changed jobs in the previous year, while70% stayed in their current jobs.

    2.2 Reasons for job change in previous year (Among respondents who changed jobs in previous year)

    Unsatisfied with salary & benefit is ranked the most important reason for respondents to change jobs in previous year(41%). Slim advancement prospect (34%) and Discontent with company culture (33%) are ranked respectively thesecond and third important. Only 6% indicated Employment term terminated as the reason for job change and another 6%indicated Staff dismissal as the reason. Other reasons for job change mainly include unsatisfied with management andlong working hours.

    2.3 Comparison before and after job change (Among respondents who changed jobs in previous year)

    Among respondents who changed jobs in the previous year, 66% of them think their new job is better than their old one.25% of them think there is no difference, while 8% think their new job is worse than their old one. Among those who thinktheir new job is worse, 34% changed their jobs with the reason Slim advancement prospect.

    3. Job hunting intentions and reasons

    3.1 Intention to change current jobs

    Among the respondents who are employed, 65% intend to change their current jobs. For respondents who changed jobs inthe previous year, more than half (52%) of them still want to change their current jobs. On the other hand, for those did notchange jobs in the previous year, 71% intend to change current jobs.

    More than 90% of respondents who intend to change jobs expect a salary increment after job change. Only 1% think thattheir salaries will decrease after job change.     4.4 Expected salary adjustment in new job compared with previous job (Among unemployed respondents)

    For the unemployed respondents who intend to find jobs (with work experience), three quarters of them expect to have asalary increase compared with their previous job. Only 10% of them expect a salary cut. For those intend to find jobs inDesign, 94% expect their new salaries to be higher than their previous jobs and no respondents expect a decrease insalaries.

    5.2 Percentage of monthly salary adjustment in 2011 By job function

    Among all respondents, the overall salary adjustment in 2011 is 5.8%. Banking & Finance is reported to have the highestincrease in salary (7.3%), followed by Engineering (7.0%) and Marketing (6.7%). On the other hand, Clerical / Secretarial /Operations has the lowest increase (4.0%), followed by Sales (4.7%).

    The average satisfaction rating of salary adjustment is 2.85 (against a satisfaction scale of 1-5, with 5 being very satisfiedand 1 being very unsatisfied).     5.7 Monthly salary adjustment in 2011 By job position

    In terms of job positions, the highest average salary increase is observed in assistant HR manager (16.9%) from Admin &HR and vice president (16.8%) from Banking & Finance. Sales coordinator from Sales has recorded a downward averagesalary adjustment in 2011 (1.1%), and sales director from Sales has recorded no salary increment.     With more than one-third (37%) of respondents think that it is easy to find a job now, 65% of currently employedrespondents intend to change their current jobs, and more than half (52%) of those who changed their jobs in the previousyear still want to seek new employment. Salary and benefit is the most common reason for job change (41% for those whochanged jobs in the previous year, 58% for those who intend to change jobs), and more than 90% expect a salary incrementafter job change. Even for respondents who are currently unemployed and intend to find a job, three-quarters of themexpect an increase in salary after taking a new job.

    The average pay rise among respondents in 2011 is 5.8%, and 8.4% and 4.7% for those who changed jobs and did notchange jobs respectively in previous year. While job seekers consider job-changing as a way to get a higher salaryincrement, the overall expected salary adjustment after job change for those who intend to change current jobs (18%) is stillwell above the actual salary adjustment.
