The Love of Christ Impels Us… (2 Cor. 5:14) by Sister Edna M.Quiambao. OSB Directress & Superior, SCC Westgrove

he time I was given the assignment to go to SSC Westgrove was a challenge to me. I thought for a while I could spend a much needed rest for 3 to 6

months either in our Formation House Community in Tagaytay or at our retreat house in Baguio. I was all set for this vacation when suddenly Mother Prioress called and informed me of the plan to make me Superior and Directress of SSC Westgrove. I was a little disappointed but at the thought of it, I asked Mother Prioress if she could give me some time to think and pray and ponder on what this assignment would mean. It means foregoing my vacation or postponing it at a later time. In silence, I prayed and I remembered the first Letter of Peter saying “Leave all your worries with Him because He cares for you. “ (Peter 5:7) and “Leave your troubles with the Lord, and He will defend you.” (Psalm 55). Perhaps, the Lord was also telling me “Expect everything from God but not according to your own ideas and plans.”

Now I am here! I am glad to be back, keeping in mind what I profess to be – a Missionary Benedictine Sister ready for any assignment because I believe it is the love of God that impels me to go not according to my own desire but according to the will and mind of Christ.

There are many things to be done, as I planned with the sisters and employees of SSC Westgrove. With their support and concern for this beloved institution, we know we can make a difference in the lives of those who come to us and whom we will still meet in the future. May our “Lord be gracious to us, may He let His face shine upon us and grant us His peace.”

That in all things God may be glorified!

The Meaning of St. Benedict Medal

(cont’d from p.1) monks and the values which he taught, such as Listening, Obedience, Service, Good Speech, Humility and Simplicity have indeed become a challenge to the whole Church, to reach holiness and to be of service to God and the Church… “that in all things God may be glorified.”

Let us beg St. Benedict, our Patron Saint to pray for us that we as a parish community through his life and teachings may truly be formed to the mind and heart of Christ.

Devotion to St. Benedict by Joy Bondoc

ove, Compassion and Peace… walk the way of God”… is a strong reminder for all of us. These are found in the lyrics of the St.Benedict Hymn which is sung

at Mass. These words from the song strikes us and leads one closer to the devotion to St. Benedict.

We are very blessed to have a Novena in his honor every Tuesday. The novena allows us to ask for our Patron Saint’s intercession to heal our hearts and spirits and to ask for help with our intentions. The St. Benedict medallions are also blessed at this time. They are worn for protection and strength and help to overcome any difficulty that may come our way. As for myself, my devotion to St. Benedict indeed enables me to “Listen with the ear of my heart…” I look at situations more on how the Lord would want me to walk in His way. I always wear the St. Benedict medallion as a reminder that he is always there to protect and guide me to the right path.

It is with great happiness that I am able to share this devotion with others by means of giving them a St. Benedict medallion which they also wear religiously. I am doubly glad to hear that wearing this medal has helped them in specific situations in life like finding strength in dealing with difficult persons, physical strength to overcome sickness, etc.

My faithfulness to St. Benedict is my way of drawing closer to the Lord and His ways.

GEO PING A warm welcome was given to incoming Assistant Parish Priest, Fr. Geoffrey ‘Geo Ping’ Zacarias and some of his parishioners from San Roque on this day.The Smiling Priest

    by Cita Velasco

is one year term at St. Benedict as Assistant Parish Priest was more than just celebrating the Holy Eucharist.

He touched many lives, developed friendships, gave advice, laughed at and shared jokes.

AT A YOUNG AGE, HE MADE HIS OWN DECISIONS. His childhood was typical. At the age of 16, he took the entrance examination to enter the seminary, after being persuaded by Father Alain. He thought then that perhaps it was God’s work for him to enter the seminary because he recalled not finishing the exams, but still, he got accepted.

HE ENJOYED LIFE IN THE SEMINARY. As part of his formation, he spent some time with Radio Veritas recruiting benefactors. He was happy with Radio Veritas, but his calling was in the seminary. Hence, a year of formation and schooling became eleven rewarding years that culminated in his ordination on May 25, 2015.

“ST. BENEDICT PARISH IS A LOVING COMMUNITY.” Serving as Assistant Parish since 2017 was, at first, a challenge. He understands that we are a young parish, diverse and a community in progress. He recognizes that our parish is full of resources, yet with a number of limitations. His wish is for us to “own and grow” our parish.

PROCESS ORIENTED. On Parish activities, Father Herald is happy of our numerous accomplishments that are important for a growing parish like ours. Equally important is the process, the values and the lessons we learn from these activities, as these will eventually shape the character and the culture of the community.

FAMILY IS IMPORTANT. His father died at an early age. With the passing of his mother last year, he stood as father and mother to his siblings. He took the role seriously because “How can I gather a community if I can not gather my family?”. He makes it a point to to visit his siblings during weekends.

SIMPLICITY IS PERFECTION. Having served in his home parish, Our Lady of the Holy Rosary in Amaya, Tanza, Mama Mary will always have a special place in his heart and he remains devoted to her. As he takes on new assignments, he prays that he remains grounded with a simple lifestyle, for simplicity is perfection.

Father Herald, we are most grateful for your being part of our spiritual journey as a parish community, We pray that wherever the Spirit calls, you may strive to abide by the will of the Father. We will miss you , your smile and your friendship. GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR MINISTRY!

JUNE 27 - Some parishioners gathered at the Parish courtyard in the morning to bid outgoing Assistant Parish Priest, Fr. Herald Mart Arenal, an affectionate farewell.
