Joan Jett and Eddie Money Highlight the Bank of the West Celebrates America Concert

By Kyle Eustice

FEEATURE STORY

It’s become an Omaha summertime tradition.Memorial Park becomes its own small city as people pack in for the annual Bank of

the West Celebrates America concert. On June 26, the annual event this year features Joan Jett & the Blackhearts with

special guest Eddie Money, two artists who were megastars in the ‘80s and continue to thrive today.

Jett was recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Known for the No. 1 classic rock hit “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll,” Joan Jett & the Blackhearts offers a powerful mix of hard rock, glam, punk, metal and garage rock that sounds fresh in any era.

Other massive hits include “Crimson and Clover,” “I Hate Myself for Loving You,” “Bad Reputation,” “Light of Day” and “Love is All Around.”

All-in-all, the group has had eight platinum and gold albums and nine Top 40 singles. In recent years, Jett has had her music featured in several films and TV series, includingThe Runaways, Baby Mama and Shrek.

From her days as a 15-year-old founding member of the all-female punk-pop band The Runaways, Jett has made records that convey toughness and joy. She continues to be an inspiration for young female rockers today, taking an active part in signing bands like Girl in a Coma and the Dollyrots to her record label, Blackheart Records.

Currently on tour with The Who in celebration of the iconic rock group’s 50th an-niversary, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts are still going strong.

Eddie Money exploded onto the music scene with his self-titled debut album in 1977, which went double platinum and featured hits like “Baby Hold On” and “Two Tickets to Paradise.” In 1986, Money released the album Can’t Hold Back, which fea-tured the classic Grammy-nominated duet with Ronnie Spector, “Take Me Home To-night.” The song reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album went platinum

and also featured the hit “I Wanna Go Back.”He’s sold more than 28 million records and his

songs have appeared in dozens of movies, televi-sion shows and video games like “Guitar Hero.”

One of the most unique aspects of the event is The Bank of the West Opening Band Con-test, which allows an aspiring band to have the chance open the show in front of thousands of people. The Opening Band Contest welcomes eligible bands to compete to be the opening act. Countless musicians competed for the opening slot and the public, once again, voted for a winner to open the concert.

As always, a mind-blowing fireworks display kicks off at 10 p.m. after the performances. It will be double the length as the 2014 event. Robert Dalrymple, executive vice president of the Bank of the West Midwest Division, said he is thrilled to participate in the Bank of the West Celebrates America Concert’s 25th con-secutive year.

“It’s an honor to commemorate the longev-ity of Bank of the West Celebrates America, a favorite summer event now in its 25th year of celebrating our great nation and community,” Dalrymple says. “We are pleased to announce another fantastic evening of music legends and

an expanded fireworks finale.”To help mark the 25th anniversary, there’s

also a Remembering Our Fallen photo ex-hibit. This moving exhibit honors those from Nebraska who lost their lives fighting the War on Terror in order to protect freedom around the world. The exhibit features photos of more than 80 Nebraskans who lost their lives serving in the Armed Forces in Afghanistan and Iraq. Concertgoers will have the opportunity to honor and remember these Nebraskan Amer-ican heroes.

“Bank of the West Celebrates America was created to honor those who fight for and pro-tect America’s independence,” Dalrymple says. “We also want to thank our hometown com-munity members for their ongoing support.”

Bank of the West Celebrates America, held on the Dodge Street side of Memorial Park, begins with the National Anthem at 6 p.m. The winner of the Bank of the West Celebrates America Open-ing Band Contest is the opening act, followed by Eddie Money and Joan Jett & the Blackhearts. The evening concludes with a spectacular fire-works finale at 10 p.m. More than 50,000 people are expected to attend this year’s Bank of the West Celebrates America.

PLAY BALL! Everything You Want to Know About the CWS

By Kyle Eustice

As the annual College World Series gets under-way in our beloved city of Omaha, there are many people behind the scenes scrambling to make sure everything runs smoothly. It’s a monumental task, as one can imagine, and takes the brilliant planning of the staff at College World Series of Omaha, Inc. Marketing and Event Manager Joe Menaugh is at the helm, along with Executive Director Kathryn Morrissey. Menaugh took some time to answer some very pertinent questions about the CWS, which kicks off June 13 at TD Ameritrade Park.

Shout Omaha: How did you first get involved with the CWS?

Joe Menaugh: I started with College World Se-ries of Omaha, Inc., in January of 2010. My wife is from Omaha and moved back here in the sum-mer of 2009 to take a position as Assistant Athletics Director for Compliance at Creighton. Timing was everything, as CWS, Inc., was looking to fill my cur-rent role during the time in which I was looking to move to Omaha.

What about it grabbed your interest?

To come work of a nationally recognized event like the CWS was a very easy decision. I have worked in sports marketing and event management my entire professional career. I started at the West-ern Athletic Conference (Denver), before moving to Chicago to work for the Big Ten Conference. Like at the CWS, my job at both was to manage the conferences’ post-season events. While I am not from Omaha, I was very familiar CWS and its his-toric standing in this city.

What’s new for the CWS in 2015? While there are no major new items this year,

we are celebrating our fifth year at TD Ameritrade Park. We will also cross the nine-millionth all-time fan during the opening weekend. We will have the return of the fly over for the first game of the cham-pionship series.

The Fan Fest has been expanded to include por-tions of Lot B. This is an increase from Lot C and Fahey Street. This will provide more fan interactives and areas for those who may not have tickets. Open-ing Celebration Day will again be free to everyone, including autograph sessions and team batting prac-tices. The Golden Knights Parachute team will per-form during the Opening Ceremonies and we will

CWS Q&A

have an expanded fireworks show. The Road to Omaha Jam lineup has been final-

ized, but has not yet been announced. They are a national country act who has won multiple CMA awards. There are multiple games where we will pro-vide giveaways to fans as they enter. The Road to Omaha Run 5k will be on the off Sunday again for the fifth year. This run travels along the  riverfront and loops through the stadium. This also happens to be Father’s Day. We will again have the CWS Sand-lot, which we started last year at the corner of 15th and Dodge. Its free and anyone can play during the allotted hours.

How do you go about selecting entertainment? When selecting acts to play during the Road to

Omaha Jam, we utilize a talent agency. CWS, Inc., along with the NCAA have established an extensive list of contacts through whom we can work with na-tional talent. When it comes to speakers during the Opening Ceremonies, we similarly use connections with our various partners.

What has made the CWS such a popular event over the years?

The CWS is as popular for fans by the action on the field as it is in the stands. Because the event has been in Omaha more  than a half century, many generations of families have made the CWS their annual  pilgrimage. More than 80 percent of our season-ticket base has had tickets for 20 years or more. Fans who once sat next to their parents, now are parents themselves. Each forming their own memories, soon to be passed their kids. The one constant through all of college baseball, has been Omaha.

Why do people love baseball so much, in your opinion?

Baseball has always been linked to tradition and timelessness. College baseball is baseball in its purest form. Young men playing for the their school, team and fans. Some with aspirations of playing profes-sionally, but many playing at the highest level they will play. The sport, by the nature of its pace of play, provides time for family and friends to enjoy their company as well as the game. We once had five generations of one family sitting together during a game.

Do people still talk about the good ol’ Rosen-blatt days?

Many people still talk about Rosenblatt. And they should. Rosenblatt Stadium rightfully was the crown jewel of baseball, playing host to countless memories. There were millions of fans, who over 61

years, saw their first game, got their first autograph, caught their first home run. A new venue doesn’t ex-tinguish those moments, rather a new generation is gathering their own. Young boys and girls still learn how to score a double play, smell the fresh cut grass, hear the National Anthem and maybe (hopefully) dream that one day they rush out of the dugout to take the field.

How much planning goes into each year of the CWS?

For our staff, the CWS is a year ‘round event. We are a singularly focused entity that manages many aspects of the event. While we have only four full-time staff, we  rely on hundreds of volunteers to maintain and grow the success. Planning for the next year begins once we have moved back into our offices. There is a lot to be learned from each year, so those plans are implemented as soon as we can.

The excitement in our office builds each spring as we approach June. While the CWS only happens for 13 days in June, the reach lasts all year. Annually, we provide grant funding to areas leagues, field and teams; a total that recently passed $4,000,000. We speak at a number of functions throughout Omaha, both to update the fans on the upcoming event, but also to provide data as to why this event isn’t just about the games, but the impact on the community. Nationally, teams begin each season with one goal: Omaha.

What’s the best part about it being over? What do you do to relax?

I don’t know that it ever being over has a best part, simply because this event is our passion. There are tons of hours dedicated during those two weeks by hundreds of people. And while those hours get long, each person is here to make sure the student-athlete, coaches and fans are provided an experience worthy of a national championship. I enjoy the chaos lead-ing up to and during the event. When the event is over however, my time is spent reacquainting myself with my family. Like many who manage the event, our families have to adapt to the needs of the Series. I love to golf and travel — both of which are sched-uled as many times as possible in July and August.

What does the CWS mean to you? As I mentioned, while I am not from here, any-

one is quick to realize what this event means to Omaha. So, in its simplest form, the CWS means Omaha. It is a snapshot of how generous this city is; how hospitable its residence are; and the pride that comes with a nation of young men striving to call their city home for the better parts of two weeks. It means family, memories, tradition.

VERSION 2.0 Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino Grows Up

By Kyle Eustice

Critics don’t phase many artists. Bethany Cosenti-no, 28, who leads the band Best Coast, is no different.

“I really don’t pay attention to critics,” Cosentino says. “The way I know a record is successful is if the fans like it and if we are still playing sold out shows all over the place, and we are.”

2010 was a monumental year for Best Coast, which catapulted into the musical spotlight with its critical-ly acclaimed debut album,  Crazy For You,  and soon Cosentino was in high demand.

Along with guitarist Bobb Bruno, Cosentino was being pulled in a million directions. In 2012, Best Coast released its sophomore album,  The Only Place, to mixed reviews.

Although not as commercially successful as the group’s debut album, the influence of the carefree pop sounds of the ‘50s and ‘60s were still intact. It was a definitive artistic statement Best Coast could firmly stand behind. Cosentino was clearly unfazed by any negativity and forged ahead with countless shows all over the world in support of the album.

“I guess people weren’t ready to hear such a pol-ished sound from us, given our first record was not polished at all,” she said. “People won’t ever be 100 percent happy with what you do. They don’t want you to make the same album over and over, but they also

don’t want you to change. It’s silly so I don’t pay atten-tion to any of it.”

Best Coast will perform on at 8 p.m., June 9 at The Waiting Room, 6212 Maple St., in Omaha. Tickets are $20.

In 2014, Best Coast went on tour with The Pixies. With Cosentino as frontwoman, she’s  always an easy target for critics who sometimes like to pick apart her appearance and anything else they deem relevant.

She’s had to learn to turn a blind eye over the past five years that she’s been in the limelight.

“It’s hard because when you’re in the spotlight, peo-ple will comment on your weight and your looks no matter what, but you just have to grow a thick skin and not let it affect you,” she says.

“I got really obsessed with exercising over the last few years and people will comment now, ‘You’re too skinny.’ When before it’s like they said I was too fat. It makes no sense.

Like I said, people will always comment,” she con-tinued. “It’s just the way the world works. I learned that for myself it was about reaching a level of confi-dence with myself physically and mentally where I no longer care about any of those things people say.”

With Cosentino more fierce than ever, Best Coast has recently released 2015’s California Nights (Harvest Records), the duo’s highest charting album to date. It hit No. 24 on the Billboard Charts, which wasn’t too

MUSIC Q&A

Page 13: June 2015

surprising considering that Cosentino said she believes it’s their best work.

“As far as I can tell, people are really enjoying  Cali-fornia Nights,” she says. “What matters is it exists as a piece of art I put out there in the world, and it means something to a lot of people.”

Cosentino’s confidence is glaringly apparent these days. Whether she’s learned a lot from her long-term rela-tionship with Wavves’ Nathan Williams, the music busi-ness or has simply just grown up, she appears to be more self-assured than ever. It shows on stage and off. However, she’s not naive enough to think being in Best Coast is a walk on the beach.

“Like any business, there are issues, but I feel like it’s important to just be dedicated to what you do and sur-round yourself with good people in the industry because they definitely do exist,” she says. “It’s a bit frustrating that streaming music has taken over because no one buys records anymore, and artists end up making less money.

“People assume that if you’re in a successful band you must be super rich, but it doesn’t really work that way. You have to hustle really hard to make it work. You have to do brand partnerships and synch your music in TV/film. There is a whole lot of stuff people that aren’t musi-cians don’t understand about the music industry. It’s not like, ‘You’re a band! Ready, set, go! You’re rich!’ But like I said, hustle hard and surround yourself with good people who will protect you and have your best interest in mind,

and you will survive.”The first song on  California Nights, “Feeling Ok,”

finds Cosentino singing about taking her own advice, and on “Fine Without Out You,” she sings about letting things go and accepting things the way they are. It’s a sign of her ever-evolving maturity.

While elementary by any writing standard, the sim-plicity of her lyrics is part of what makes Best Coast so endearing. With Cosentino blossoming into such a singu-lar force of nature, Best Coast will continue to coast on its laurels and have endless fun doing it.

“I for sure used to feel a bit awkward on stage, at least when Best Coast first started,” she says. “When we start-ed I wasn’t sure like what to do with my body when I was playing guitar, I wasn’t sure where to look. I kind of would feel like, ‘Uhhh, am I totally boring these people?’

“I have been performing on stage since I was like 5-years-old. So, the stage is a place I’ve always felt com-fortable. I just had never been the front woman of a band before. So, it took some getting used to. If you see us live now, it’s like a whole new Bethany up there. I am so confident on stage now. I just don’t even care if I look silly dancing around or if I’m making weird faces when I sing. It’s like my hour every night to just go wild. I love it.”

Performing with Best Coast at the Waiting Room will be Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Bully, & J Fernandez. For more information, visit www.onepercentrproductions.com.
