The Pallottines (Society of Catholic Apostolate) U.S.A. National Circus Church
From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto … Our beloved Bishop Frank J. Dewane has sent a letter to
all parishioners with some important directives which are: The dispensation given to all the Faithful from the
obligation to attend Sunday Mass will remain in effect until September 1, 2020. Catholics are encouraged to stay at home if ill or not comfortable returning to public gatherings for the celebration of the Mass. Please check your Parish website or that of the Diocese regarding the live streaming of Masses.
Please consider the use of face coverings a mandatory step taken in genuine concern for the wellbeing of our brothers and sisters in Christ. Today’s gospel continues the strong recommendation
by Jesus in last Sunday’s gospel: fear not your adversaries. In the present gospel Jesus offers us a choice again between Him and material possessions and state of life. Jesus wants us to put Him NUMBER ONE in our lives. Our total belonging to Jesus has to be chosen even over the most precious and tender loves of our emotional life. In listening to His words about love of parents, spouses or children, we must remember that Jesus was a Mediterranean man, grown up in an atmosphere where people expressed their views in exaggerated verbal or gesture forms to drive home a point, but in such a way to hit the sensitivity and the minds of the hearers or spectators. Think of Hosea 1-2, Ez 3:1-4, Ez 5:1-5, Ez 23, Ez 37, Jer 13:1-11 or of Jesus’ command: “Be perfect as my Father in heaven is perfect” which is certainly impossible to fulfill if taken literally.
The Mediterraneans of Jesus’ time were like the New Yorkers of today, who find the adjectives fantastic or fabulous not strong enough and so blended them together to form Fantabulous! So in today’s gospel Jesus’ message is to put Jesus ahead of all our thoughts, desires, possessions or relatives: are we listening? Is Jesus NUMBER ONE in our hearts?
Next Sunday is Caritas Sunday, we ask for your donations to help continue to assist the needy of our area. A collection box will be at the exit door after Mass. Please be generous. God will reward you.
Saturday is July 4th! Happy Fourth of July...our Independence Day! May the flame of freedom never cease to burn in our beloved land: One nation under god with liberty and justice for all! The Parish Office will be closed Friday, July 3 in observance. We will have a regular Saturday Mass schedule: 7:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 4 p.m. (vigil) and 5: 30 p.m. (vigil).
This year it is a subdued feast because of Covid-19 and the racial tension in our U.S.A. Let me comment on this unrest with the words of Pope Francis who expressed, “great concern for the disturbing social unrest in your nation, following the tragic death of Mr. George Floyd.”
Archbishop Gomez of Los Angeles echoed: “I am praying for George Floyd and his loved ones, and on behalf of my brother bishops, I share the outrage of the black community
and those who stand with them in Minneapolis, Los Angeles, and across the country. The cruelty and violence he suffered does not reflect on the majority of good men and women in law enforcement, who carry out their duties with honor. It is true what Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, that riots are the language of the unheard.”
When a government becomes oppressive and destructive and tyrannical, then the people have to answer with force and with call to arms. This is what our forefathers did starting with the tea party riot in Boston (1773) and creating our U.S.A. nation. Today, violence and riots are again in our cities!
Continuing quoting Archbishop Gomez: “But the violence of recent nights is self-destructive and self-defeating. Nothing is gained by violence and so much is lost.
Legitimate protests should not be exploited by persons who have different values and agendas. Burning and looting communities, ruining the livelihoods of our neighbors, does not advance the cause of racial equality and human dignity.
We should honor the sacrifice of his life by removing racism and hate from our hearts and renewing our commitment to fulfill our nation’s sacred promise - to be a beloved community of life, liberty, and equality for all.”
Monday, June 29 is the Feast of the two great pillars of Christianity: St. Peter and St. Paul. This solemnity brings us the memory of the two rails on which runs the train of the original Church of Christ. The Pope was represented by Peter, and the teaching magisterium of the Church was represented by the great teacher, Paul. So, we the followers of Jesus recall the two great apostles that He left (Peter) or sent (Paul, after his conversion) to his budding church. It does seem ironic that a Jewish fisherman and a rabbi, who once persecuted the Christians, would be honored two thousand years later as the champions of the Church of Christ. June 29th is also the day when we Catholics pray
for the Pope, and reaffirm our unshakable belief in the dogma of the inerrancy of the Pope. Papal infallibility, or inerrancy, is a dogma rooted in the Bible. The papacy grew out of the mission of Peter (born Simon bar Jonah), an uneducated common fisherman, from the village of Capernaum, who nonetheless became the leading disciple of Jesus, and changed his name from ‘Simon’ to ‘Cephas,’ which more accurately would sound like ‘Rocky’ in our colloquial English. In Matthews’ Gospel (16: 18-19), Jesus gives Peter the keys of authority to admit or exclude, and promised that Peter’s primacy among the apostles will survive Peter’s death. From this awesome power, given inexplicably to Peter, one could infer that this fisherman was an exceedingly smart genius…far from it! Many unflattering remembrances about Peter are immortalized in the Gospel! The most famous is the painful and shameful denial of Jesus (Mk 16: 66-72) in the courtyard. Even outside the Bible, one very ancient Roman tradition, immortalized in the “Quo Vadis” chapel on the Appian Way, makes use of the fumbling fisherman’s shoes!

The most obvious question that comes to mind is “How could Jesus make such a stupid choice?” My answer is based on the last chapter of John’s Gospel (21: 15-19) when Peter thrice reaffirmed his undying love for Jesus because, as Jesus himself said (Lk 7: 47): “So I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven because she has shown great love. But the one to whom little is forgiven, loves little.”
The great lesson from Peter’s choice by Jesus is this: we are judged by God not only on our successes or talents but primarily by our love of God, of neighbors, of ourselves. As the song says: “And They’ll Know We are Christians by our Love.” As Paul remarked (1 Cor 13), everything will pass away - riches, health, possessions, hope and knowledge - because in Paradise we will find God alone, and God is Love! (1 Jn 4:8).
Let us pray for our beloved Pope Francis that the Lord may grant him an incredible amount of wisdom and mercy for all of us faltering sheep of Jesus’ family.

We often assume parenthood happens easily after ‘I do,’ but for many married couples, it does not. For some, the joy of conception never happens. Others suffer repeated miscarriages. Still others experience secondary infertility: after giving birth to one or more children, they are unable to have
another… If you experience difficulty bringing a child into your family, know that you are not alone. God is with you, and his Church desires to walk with you.

Wake Me Up Lord
Wake me up Lord, so that the evil of racism finds no home within me.
Keep watch over my heart Lord, and remove from me any barriers to your grace, that may oppress and offend my brothers and sisters.
Fill my spirit Lord, so that I may give services of justice and peace.
Clear my mind Lord, and use it for your glory. And finally, remind
us Lord that you said, "blessed are the peacemakers,
for they shall be called children of God."
Amen.

Setting up an endowment is
easier than you might imagine.
An endowment is an excellent way for a parishioner to make sure that St. Martha continues to thrive well beyond their lifetime, and we can make it easy. Through the Catholic Community Foundation, a parishioner can choose to add to existing endowment funds or create their own endowment. Endowment funds help provide long-term stability and sustainability well into the future because the endowment is typically structured so the original gift amount (principal) remains intact, while the investment earnings are used to support St. Martha. Endowments don’t have to be setup for millions of dollars. For instance, a $25,000 endowment, at a current payout rate of 4%, will generate $1000 for St. Martha and will continue forever. The impact of the gift will be felt for generations to come. If you are interested in learning more about an endowment, please contact Teressa McCoy in the Parish Office at 941-366-4210 or [email protected].
Thank you for your support of St. Martha Parish. Our parishioners are our only source of funds and your
contributions keep the lights on, enable parish ministries, and support our outreach to the poor.
