St. Martha Parish 1100 W. Grand River Avenue, Okemos MI 48864 517-349-1763 www.st-martha.org

From Father Mike’s Desk We've got something special coming up for families with young

children this week, and it's tied to something for parishioners of all ages. On Tuesday, August 6, Rich and Maureen Budd will be here to talk with parents (and those becoming parents) about practical ways to share the Faith with children. If you ever listen to the podcast "Armchair Catholic," you'll recognize Rich as one of the three friends whose entertaining banter is enjoyed by so many. He and his wife Maureen are young parents struggling with the same challenges that so many of us have faced. It will be a delightful evening, I'm sure.

And, as indicated, the talk by Rich and Maureen is tied to another of our periodic family nights. Hot dogs and other similarly nutritious summer fare will be available outside, along with good fellowship and warm August weather.

Later in the week, on Friday evening, the Diocese is again sponsoring a vocations night down on Michigan Avenue where the Lansing Lugnuts play. It is always fun to see one or two of the Dominican sisters in their white habits rip a "first pitch" from the mound into the catcher's glove, followed soon after by other Catholic leaders doing the same. And the Knights and other Catholic choirs are always in good voice. All over the park will be priests, seminarians, and religious sisters, happy to converse about the joys they have found in their ministry.

The point, of course, is to highlight the vocations of priesthood and religious life. We are blessed here in central Michigan to have strong orders of religious sisters, with three communities drawing significant numbers of women in their 20s. The diocesan priesthood continues to be in better shape that in many other dioceses, yet the need is always there -- the Lord is calling the young, but it often takes a community of encouragement and prayer before a young person actually hears the call. Long ago, long before marriage, I was briefly in a religious order. And today, of course, I have the blessing of priesthood. Both these lives are wondrous, and let's make sure that no young person who is being called misses out on a great life, following the will of God.

Finally, let me say again that planning continues for our PARISH AUCTION ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 2 at the Huntington Club at Spartan Stadium. It's an auction to raise money for the programs that educate and form all our young people. So we correctly call it an "auction." But we could just as easily call it a PARISH PARTY, though. In a great venue, we'll have delicious food, refreshing adult (and other) beverages, and a wonderful evening of conversation with all our fellow parishioners and friends. Please, please, put November 2 on your calendar. More information will be forthcoming all autumn, but mark the date now, so you won't miss this chance.

Enjoy August, cherish summer, give thanks for blessings!

V. 32 No. 31 August 3/4, 2019 Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Sister Anita’s Corner

Today may we each enjoy simplicity … hold it lightly … let it be our lens through which we also hold our gratitude for all our blessings.

God of everlasting goodness … our origin … our source … our first beginning and our final longing …

Help me Lord to hand my restlessness over to you … my anxiousness … my reluctance … and a times my fear. What you will do with these I don’t know but I do know they don’t really serve me in my simplicity or gratitude.

Be close to us Lord.

Sometimes we form our prayer with words, sometimes with time and movement … sometimes we able to sit close to you, O loving God and still our voice and listen with our hearts. May we pray always from needs and desires.

Forgive our turning away from you.

God of everlasting goodness, your kindness never fails, gifts without measure flow from your goodness. May I not hoard them … misuse them … or not even use them at all.

God of everlasting goodness, you form us anew within Christ in the image of you, our Creator.

Bring us peace as we center ourselves in your will … draw us to you and bless us with time and strength and focus to discern your will … for you are all goodness … let us know your peace as we decide and act.

Our life is your gift.

Guide our life’s journey, help us to take hold of simplicity and gratitude as our companions so that we are free to be companions to others.

Keep us strong in your love.

Keep us in your love …keep us in your heart … make my heart unto thine - as you are the beloved whom my heart seeks. We come to you God of everlasting goodness through your beloved, Jesus.

Through Jesus, your Beloved, we pour out our desire to be more fully alive … rejoicing in seeing one flower at a time thus drawing close to your intricate, creativity … hearing the lapping waves as they speak your praises … feeling the gentle breeze caress our weary, fretful selves … tasting your goodness in all that is being provided for us to share with our sisters and brothers … feeling the embrace of love that is surrounding us …

Through Jesus we desire to deepen our response of love … with Jesus we go forth … in him we live and move and have our being. Centered in your will and help us to accept your forgiveness … your peace … your love … Amen.

Breaking Open the Word: Friday, August 9 at 9 am

in our Saint Kateri Room with Sister Anita. Come and join us - coffee will be ready!

We welcome Sister Mary Shea for this year’s Mission Appeal next weekend, with a reception following Sunday’s 5 pm Mass: Sister Mary will be presenting at each Mass during the homily on the work the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul have been doing in Kitale, Kenya. She served for almost 10 years in the mountains of Kenya and on missions in the Southeastern part of the USA. Sister Mary and Bill and Jean Kordenbrock invite you to our Hall on Sunday evening for light refreshments and a short lecture in our Hall on Kitale, Kenya and the mission called Nyota ya asubhi (Morning Star). She will share information on support programs that they provide including organic farming, vegetable provision, alcohol and drug abuse, at-risk-children’s education, AIDS, and women’s empowerment. She is eager to share the many exciting things that are happening for the residents of Kitale because of their good work! “I am grateful to have the opportunity to talk to you about the people our sisters with in Matisi, a slum at the edge of Kitale Town, Kenya. It breaks your heart to see how so many struggle there just to survive another day.” Sister Mary

Meet our Parish Room’s Patron Saints: Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, S.C.

Elizabeth Ann Bayley was born on August 28, 1774. Her mother died when she was three years old. Her physician father remarried, and her stepmother involved young Elizabeth in many acts of corporal charity. However, this marriage did not last, and young Elizabeth essentially lost her mother for a second time. At the age of nineteen, she married William Seton, a wealthy merchant of imported goods. The Setons were socially prominent in New York City, and were parishioners of Trinity Episcopal Church in lower Manhattan. Five children were born of their marriage.

A recurrence of tuberculosis caused William’s doctors to direct that he go to the warmth of Italy. He was accompanied by Elizabeth and their eldest daughter. Despite the change of climate, William soon died. Elizabeth and her daughter came into the care of some of William’s Italian business partners. Through those families came Elizabeth’s introduction to Catholicism. Upon her return to New York, she was received into the Catholic Church.

Conversations with a priest of the Society of Saint Sulpice (the Sulpicians, who opened America’s first seminary) led Elizabeth to move to Emmitsburg, Maryland, where she began a school for young Catholic girls. She also started a religious community in Emmitsburg in 1809 to care for poor children. This was the first founding of a group of religious sisters tin America, and from the Emmitsburg school grew the parochial schools of the United States.

Mother Seton then devoted her life to her Sisters of Charity. She died in 1821 at the age of 46, and is buried at National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

Eight years later, in 1829, four Sisters of Charity went west to Ohio, with the eventual result that the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati arose in 1852 as a separate congregation, directly descended from Mother Seton’s vision. The sisters first came to Michigan in 1872 and now minister throughout the United States and several other countries. In 1993, four Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati came to Okemos, where they founded Saint Martha School. To this day, Saint Martha Parish enjoys the graces that flow from their ministry among us.
