I last wrote about Preston Manor in thecontext of mourning in the Victorianage. An event at the house, with a talk

from local historian Sarah Tobias,confirmed that the aftermath of a deathin Victorian times was a more creepyaffair than the death itself.

My latest visit involved a tour of thebuilding with Vanessa Curtis whose novelfor teenagers The Haunting Of TabithaGrey was published earlier this year. Herghost story features Weston House andthe Thomas-Fulfords, rather than PrestonManor and its former residents theThomas-Stanfords, so it’s pretty obviouswhat was in mind.

Preston Manor is rather fascinating inthat visitors enter the building straightinto one expansive room that takes up a largechunk of the ground floor. This arrangementwas clearly not the original layout. Four ionicpillars, which replaced a wall, easily give thisaway. Past the pillars is a 17th century lightgrey marble fireplace.

At the rear of the building is the morningroom which served as a sitting room for LadyEllen Thomas-Stanford, whose death in 1932signalled the end of Preston Manor’s time asa grand family home. The room, like everynook and cranny in the building, is filled withperiod furniture, paintings and ornaments.One most unglamorousfeature though is a plainmirror which is situatedoutside the room’sdoorway. It was used byservants who had to looktheir best for Lady Ellen. 

A long staircase leads to the first floor. What is now the south-west room isessentially a small library though it did once serve as a bedroom. Vanessa’sbook draws attention to the views across the manor’s gardens, where croquet-playing ladies can be easily imagined on the flat lawns.

I’ve always been fascinated by Ellen Thomas-Stanford’s bedroom, which isat the front of the building. It contains several attractive pieces of furniture,along with a photograph of one of the family’s beloved dogs. But a rathercrude cabling system – which allowed Lady Ellen to operate a night bolt fromthe comfort of her bed – appeals to the engineer in me. 

Whilst our tour was more architectural than ghostly, I was reminded of themore sinister elements of the historic building when I overheard the lady atreception recount the story of her first day at work.
