T he London Boyfriend is not entirely happy at the thought thatI might be writing about him. Not that he has ever read thiscolumn, or the one that I used to write 26 years ago in a
London magazine. Luckily, this magazine is not available in London,although I don’t think I’ve ever written anything outright rude abouthim and, even if I did, no one knows who he is anyway.
Well, actually, if I mentioned his name, quite a few people wouldknow who he was, but I’m not going to. He claims – ratheraccurately for someone who’s never read a word I’ve written – that Iam a ‘character assassinator’. Like Linda, the university secretary inLittle Britain – not that he’s ever watched that either – I allegedlydeliver descriptions of acquaintances: lascivious side up at machine-gun speed (my words, not his).
Nowadays, even if I’ve barely started an anecdote aboutsomebody, he’ll mutter something like: ‘Here we go, characterassassination’, which often stops me in my tracks. Although,curiously, he always asks me to go on, having applied an initialpuncture to my inflated description.
My mother and my children, being theclosest people to me, are the ones whocould definitely sue me, or at least apply forsome sort of royalty for what has beenwritten about them over the past sevenyears. Fortunately, my mother is blissfullyunaware of the magazine, let alone the column,or even the fact that I am (some believe) able tostring a sentence together. With the exception of The SmallDaughter, who prefers The Famous Five, my children are way toolazy and disinterested to read the toils of my labour. BesidesPrimark, Oceana and Thompson Holidays are the current custodiansof any legal fund they may need. Furthermore, I suspect I’d have togo an awfully long way to elicit a response that went even slightlyupwards of extreme boredom.
The Ex-Boyfriend, who to be fair has borne the brunt of my Linda-like lippyness for the past five years, could possibly sue me forsome of the things I’ve written about him. Fortunately, he is one ofthe most laid-back, unconcerned people I’ve ever met and wouldrather be lying down or applying rubbish stickers to his bike than beengaging a top lawyer to sue me. Oops, there I go again.
Having just survived, barely at times, the move from suburb toBohemia, I cannot help feeling that it might be time to startlooking at my life and the way I live it.
To be frank, I have for years got away with murder, not literally, butsometimes close. I am an unconventional dresser and always havebeen. I eat too well, drink too often and generally enjoy the high life. Ifthere’s a party them count me in! Burn the candle at both ends? Whywhen you can simply throw the whole thing into the flames?
But at what cost? Last week I finally made the break and movedthe last of my stuff. It was a traumatic experience and one that I didfor the most part alone as I found it too distressing.
There laid before me were the material accumulations of my life.I gathered the most precious and left the rest. It was too upsetting.
So what now? Is it time to settle down to a more sedate life?Should I be hanging up my party clothes and buying a pair ofslippers? Heaven forfend! Not yet.
Then ping! An email from a company called Shipton & Heneagewho make luxury velvet travel slippers. Their Paris collection containsthe sort of scrummy embroidered velvet slippers that I would look atwith envy in my Mayfair days (no not Shepherd’s Market). I had acraving for them back then and the email has rekindled that lust.
I’m not quite ready to hang up my dancing shoes just yet and Ihave never got the slipper habit. But when I do I want to doit in style in a flower encrusted velvet pair by theseguys. I can see it now, slipping on something warmto pop off to Kemp Town Village for mygroceries in a divine pair of eyecatching shoes – oh I know theyare meant for indoor wear butwhat a shame to not showthem off to a wideraudience. Ihave finally out grown my one bedroom flat. It has taken threefailed relationships and one toddler to prove to me that it is toosmall for more than one person. There just isn’t space for anything. Not plates or cups or even me.
All the toddler’s stuff is everywhere, toy cooker, doll’s house,beanbag… Where’s my stuff? Shoved on shelves, so that whenbrushed past everything falls off, resulting in me swearing andshoving said stuff onto my swing chair.
I have a rattan swing chair, it’s a design classic yet you can neversee the actual seat, never mind sit in it, as it is permanently coveredin clothes/toys/books. I say books, but they’re not mine, they are allCharlie and Lola. My books are in boxes somewhere, it’s quicker if Igoogle a recipe than try find a recipe book.
This flat is driving me nuts. If friends offer to help cook I bat themaway, fearing they may discover that every cupboard, when opened,will spill out all its contents of plastic beakers, Poundland crisps andincense sticks – all unhappily sharing the same uncomfortable andsquashed shelf space.
Nothing has its own place. Even the cups in my house don’thave a permanent place of abode. They mainly live on the dryingrack or in the sink, to be honest. I long for a kitchen where thecups have a place to call their own. The vitamins, children’smedicines and nail varnish live on top of my fridge. I want akitchen where nothing lives on top of the fridge. A kitchen wherethe top of the fridge is not another shelving solution but a placeyou can wipe down easily and sparkles like a Cillit bang advert. Ineed my own bedroom, I am sick of living and sleeping all in one room.
I doubt I’d sell my flat now. I have considered converting thekitchen into a children’s bedroom, reclaiming my bedroom backand making the lounge into one of those kitchen living spacewotsits. But I can’t afford it. If this recession lasts a couple moreyears that means I’ll be soon sharing a one bedroom flat with afive-year-old. Hell. “Mummy, can I have a pet? A bike?” And putwhere? Maybe I’ll just get her a pony and we can use it to pull acaravan around.

called Hide-and-Go-Seek. Favourite film in the whole world? Toy Story 2. Least favourite film in the whole world? Toy Story 1. Definition of a pirate: Someone who takes things without asking.
Any instrumental tunes you know extremely well?The Archersand the baddie theme from Star Wars.
Favourite colour? Yellow? Before then? Dark Yellow. And beforethat? Black.
What do you call filled pasta, for no logical reason? Pockstock. What do you most like to talk about in the bath? Big vehicles. Your favourite memory? Sleeping in a ferry. Do you find slapstick comedy extremely funny? Yes I do. One request that you always (inexplicably) whisper: ‘Can I eat the
ice cubes?’ What do you know about aerobatics? They have always proved
very popular. Despite others saying it does, a lolly doesn’t look like a rocket
because… it doesn’t have turbo engines. Is the disability ramp outside libraries a practical feature or a
source of enjoyment? A source of enjoyment.Name three things in life that make you most stressed: Someone
else opening the microwave, having to get off a ferry (see favouritememory), when an adult tries to skip the technical data page whilereading me my powerboat book.
What is your favourite joke? What do you call two witches wholive together? Broom mates.
Second favourite joke? Why did Darth Vader cross the road? To getto the dark side.

Doors and windowsSpeaking of insulation, you can reduceheating bills even more by filling any gapsand blocking draughts. Use curtains anddraught excluders (is there some way ofmaking them chic again, do you think?) foradded warmth. Double glazing, particularlyif it uses ‘low emissivity’ glass, will alsoimprove the energy efficiency of your home– but check first with the local planningdepartment if you live in a conservationarea or listed building.

See the lightIf you haven’t already, switch to low-energyor energy-saving light bulbs. Old-fashionedlight bulbs are being phased out, but youmay as well beat the pack and fit all thelights in your home with ecofriendlyreplacements, which will last eight timeslonger than ordinary bulbs.
Grow your ownUse gardens, patios and windowsills togrow your own fruit, veg and herbs. You’llsave on packaging, petrol and groceries,and you can share any excess with friends.
Switch it offSwitch off lights, appliances and chargersthat aren’t in use. It may seem unnecessary,but some appliances use up to 25 per cent oftheir normal power in standby mode. Switchthem off, and watch your bills come down.

dishwashers and even TVs comeup for replacement, invest in

The marina certainly needsmore of a balanced offer. Thereare plenty of successfulresidential developments there,but new offices and talk of asecond hotel on the westernarm of the harbour, facing thecity, could be just the boostthat it needs.
Phil Graves is confident thatthere will be a demand foroffices at that location. But healso says that landlords have tobe approachable in the currentmarket if things are to work.
‘‘Brighton is Brighton’s greatestasset, but there has been a
tendency to be complacent aboutthat. We all need to takeadvantage of the attractions thatour unique city has to offer,especially in a climate wherepeople are thinking twice aboutforeign travel. Brighton Marinashould be recognised for thegenuine potential that it has tooffer,” he concludes.
Missing the boat
Brighton Marina has had, tosay the least, a chequeredhistory. One minute
seeing a boom and the nextreverting to windsweptwilderness again.
Crazily, the site has almostlimitless potential and there islittle doubt that there has beenenough interest and investmentin making it work from thethree major players involved.But time and time againplanning problems and changesin the financial markets havehindered progress. So much sothat we asked Phil Graves ofGraves Jenkins if he could eversee it being made to work.

At the time of writing, I remain confident that a solution will be found but it will bepainful. A great Brighton institution is under threat and only through tact andunderstanding will it survive.
The North Laine began as one of five open arable fields in Brighton (the otherswere West, Hilly, Little and East Laines). It was developed in sections and GardnerStreet was laid out in the early 1800s by John Furner on the site of his marketgarden. “Now spoilt by the oppressive Jubilee Shopping Hall, formerly Tesco,”wrote Timothy Carder in his Encyclopaedia of Brighton in 1990. He was referring tothe building now occupied by the Komedia.
Carder did have a point. In its previous guise as a supermarket, the buildingwould have been remarkably ugly. It certainly now stands out – it doesn’t matchits neighbours and is covered with brightly-lit ‘Komedia’ signs. Numbered 44-47Gardner Street, it would be safe to assume that the three-storey (plus basement)structure replaced four 19th century buildings that were built in a similar style tothe rest of the area. Its widecorrugated façade and canopy arenot features common to the NorthLaine but are quirky nevertheless. Ido recall it as a Snooper’s Paradise-style flea market selling clothes,records and even food at a café. Itwas a fun place to rummage but,ultimately, under utilised.
The Komedia’s work needs nointroduction as pretty much everyfamous comedian has performedthere. It was founded by ColinGranger, Marina Kobler and DavidLavender and started out in 1994 inthe old billiards hall on ManchesterStreet in Kemp Town (later theJoogleberry Playhouse, today LatestMusicbar). Expansion was rapid andthe logical move to Gardner Streettook place in 1998. In 2006/7, thepiece of land on Regent Street behindwas purchased. Amongst other things, this allowed the upstairs to become anadaptable performance space with a standing capacity of 500. The Komedia brandhas spread too and a second venue was opened in Bath in November last year.
The details are unimportant but the Komedia’s recent problems were certainlynot helped by the withdrawal of Arts Council funding. Debts have accrued andfinance is currently difficult to obtain. Such goodwill exists though towards thislocal success story. I am sure that everybody, creditors included, will do all thatthey can to help at this difficult time.
