D id you notice that Christmas hasstarted a little later this year. It mustbe a sign of the times or the fact

that I am seldom home at the moment,but I seem to have missed out on theperennial moaning about Christmascoming too soon. In fact, thegeneral opinion seems to be thatit isn’t coming soon enough.

The shops certainly seemto have bided their time –global recessions puttingthe brakes on the usualflurry of prematurefake snow perhaps?

But now it isDecember andwith a bit ofluck it will finally betime to break out thethick sweaters andwoolly mittens. Muchas I like the mildweather I am startingto miss the chill of areal winter morning.

I am currently blaming the unseasonal weather for the fact that I haveas yet not bought one present. I know, I need to get my skates on, butthere’s no ice to prompt that old cliché.

I have, however, bought some new fairy lights. A flicker of memoryreminded me that last year mine failed dismally only a week into thefestivities. The tree remained drab and unlit until the twelfth night. Well,have you ever tried to take fairy lights off a decorated tree? I rest my case.

For the last two years my much loved, white artificial tree has been asoberly stylish black and white affair, but the new lights are pink, which Iguess reflects my current state of happiness. So pink lights and a dozennew purple baubles to set them off too. It sounds rather pretty I think, thatis, if they are delivered in time.

I am also celebrating a Christmas not in the kitchen. It doesn’t happenoften but this year we have decided to go out to a hotel on Christmas day.We will be indulging in many courses of stylish festive fare in TheRestaurant at Drakes where Andy MacKenzie I hope will be on top form ashe serves us roast turkey and trimmings.

Christmas day with no cooking or washing up; life really is sweet.

E ach time I return to theUniversity of Sussex, I get thedistinct impression that Sir Basil

Spence may well be Brighton’s mostunder-appreciated man. Most Sussexstudents are unaware of his work andmost of those who do notice simplywrite him off as another insensitiveBrutalist brute. One person who doeslove Sir Basil is campus-based arthistorian Alexandra Loske-Page.

Alexandra recently introduced meproperly to the freshly-paintedMeeting House, a multi-faith buildingwith a heavenly interior. I am not surewho sanctioned the painting of thisuniversity building though, but it doesappear to be a schoolboy error.Exterior concrete, or brick for thatmatter, should never be painted,especially when it belongs to a GradeII* Listed structure.

Painting aside, the exterior of thebuilding is in good shape. Itsgargoyle-like gulley outlets directrain away from the copper roof andinto the moat below. Aluminiumwindows have a bad reputation butthis is probably because many wereused inappropriately as replacementson Victorian buildings. In the rightsetting, such as this, their clean linesare most apt.

Upon climbing either of the twocurved flights of steps within thelobby, visitors are deluged withcoloured light from the many different panes of glass that occupythe spaces between the concreteblocks from which the building isconstructed. There is a real mix ofcolours which vaguely divide up asred and orange in the west, yellow in the north, and green and blue in the east. The upstairs room is huge and has to be seen to be believed.

The Meeting House opened in October 1966 on the site of Tenantlain Barnat a time when the campus was still rather barren. With an oast house-likeexterior and a dovecote-like interior, its rural roots are not forgotten.

I know that when I was studying at Sussex I didn’t understand thearchitectural merit of the buildings around me but, thinking back, I didn’treally care. I mainly recall being frustrated that the moat within the FalmerHouse courtyard was empty (it still is). Since leaving, I have been getting toknow and appreciate Spence’s work. news>A CHANGE IN VIEW ONENERGY PERFORMANCECERTIFICATES (EPCS)?Jason Brand of Brand Vaughantakes a look at EPCs and what wethink of them: “EnergyPerformance Certificates (EPCs)are the only legal requirement leftover from the sudden departureof the Home Information Packs(HIPs) in 2010.

“An EPC is carried out by aspecialist assessor who willsurvey items such as loftinsulation, boilers, radiators andwindows. Their findings producethe final certificate, which is thenvalid for a 10-year period.

“Simply speaking, if you areselling or renting a property youare required by law to provide one.

“Despite their good intentions,the reality is that EPCs areconsidered an unnecessary andburdensome bit of paperwork. Myexperience is that the majority ofbuyers buying period propertyshow little interest in the contentof an EPC.

“To put this all into perspective,recent research carried out byConsumer Focus Research showedthat four out of five people whohad received an EPC when buyingor renting had not acted on any ofits recommendations.

“Whatever the validity of anEPC, according to the currentlegislation you must instruct aDomestic Energy Assessor toprepare one for your home, whichshould be carried out within 28days and failure to do so mayresult in a £200 fine. In 2012 thegrace period will fall to seven days,these requirements may beextended, at which time EPC datamust be included in all advertisingmaterial related to the property,possibly including the sale boards.

“It appears general attitudetowards EPCs is overwhelminglydismissive, but with the rising costof heating and lighting our homes,this attitude may well change inthe near future.”www.brandvaughan.co.uk
