I began writing aquadrilogy of columnson Brighton’s famous

Dome at the end of 2008but, for all sorts of reasons,I never quite got around tofinishing the fourth.

A recent gloriousmorning proved to be theperfect opportunity toreturn to the building’sroof to take somephotographs of the Dome’s dome up-close.Thinking back, previous attempts to getphotographs were thwarted by scaffolding andbad weather. Matt Ashby from themaintenance team was kind enough to showme around on this particular visit – on a daywith the bluest of skies.

The roof is reached via a narrow spiralstaircase from the mezzanine level justabove the recently-refurbished foyer bararea. The staircase suddenly opens out ontoa huge expanse with views of the CornExchange, Museum, and RoyalPavilion. The dome itself has raisedareas which were once windowsbut it is now entirely lead-covered.Although they are not pretty, thevarious air-conditioning units whichinhabit the roof are features.

There are actually two domes –an inner dome and an outer dome –and a cavity exists between them.The outer dome, that which I saw from the roof, is the building’s originaldome. The inner dome was added as part of Robert Atkinson’s Art Decorenovation that took place in 1934-5. Within the narrow cavity, it is possibleto see parts of the old paint scheme (presumably part of Philip Lockwood’sworks which saw the conversion of the building from stables to concert hallin 1867). Also, it is pretty clear from within where the window openings werewhich once let light flood in.

Although it is hard not to be overwhelmed by the Dome’s Art Deco interior,some of the most fascinating areas of the Dome are the least glamorous. Amyriad of complicated mechanisms in front of the stage, beneath theauditorium, can be moved to facilitate the needs of different performanceroutines. I was interested particularly though by some of the dressing roomsbelow, which have been named after greats such as William Porden, thearchitect of the original building.

They might have accommodated some of the world’s biggest stars but asbasement rooms off narrow corridors out of the view of the public, dressingrooms without windows are not likely to be glitzy. Nevertheless, if walls couldtalk, I am sure that they would have some pretty interesting stories to tell.

Robert Nemeth goes up on the roof at the Dome

W hile in Havana last week, I ran into the ex-Cuban Boyfriend. I say ‘raninto’, but really it was a case of him dropping round ‘unexpectedly’ toYusi’s house one evening. We had a beer and a chat and it was far less

awkward than I had imagined it would be. So much so, that we spent a coupleof evenings sharing the same table at the club where he plays at the end ofmy trip. I guess it just goes to show what a nice guy he is, although I have nointention of going back there any time soon.

I am not the type of person who returns to bygone romances, as I figure thatthey ended for a reason and that reason, should one choose to renew theacquaintance, would likely as not rear its ugly head once more further down theline. As the old adage goes, ‘A leopard never changes its spots’. For this reason,The New Brighton Boyfriend is no more, as he was just too much of a badinfluence and never likely to alter his spots in time to be a good one. The lack ofpressure is like a breath of fresh air and I am enjoying my single-ish status.

The one exception to myrule of not returning toprevious crime-scenes is acontinued liaison I have withan Ex-Boyfriend from yearsago. This has now trundledon for seven-ish years,seeing off various ‘proper’boyfriends and girlfriends onboth sides. The secret is,that there are no secrets –well, between us at least –and therefore no jealousyand I have to say that itseems to be a verysuccessful formula.Furthermore, my continuedliaison with Old Faithful – orshould that be OldUnfaithful? – does not stopme from going out andmeeting new people, as he isalways the first to advise meon new romances.

Recycling boyfriends is one thing, but just lately I’ve been in contact abunch of old London friends from 20 or more years ago. While in Soho a coupleof weeks ago, I bumped into a guy I used to run warehouse parties with in theearly ’90s. And guess what? He’s still hosting parties and I’m going to one thiscoming Saturday. Hurrah! Meanwhile, on Monday I received an email fromanother London friend I’ve known since I was 18. I have no idea how he got myemail address, but I’m sure it must have something to do with the omnipotentevil that is Facebook, even though I don’t do Facebook. This particular guy andI used to run clubs together and write articles on the state of British Hip-Hoptogether. We were also, at the grand ages of 19 and 20 years old, RichardDesmond’s (owner of OK and The Express) ‘creative think tank’. Anyway, theexciting news is that he has an online record store selling old vinyl and – joyof joys – some of my old hip-hop records are worth £300. Moreover, yearsago, my friend’s dream was to open a Museum Of Dance, only he didn’t havethe funding. This is a dream that the chilly, somewhat copious, waters of timeseem to have failed to extinguish. All he needs, he says, is a millionaire tofund the project... Now, what was I saying about leopards and spots?

A sk me anything about nails. Go on, test me. At the moment it’s myspecialist subject. I’ve recently put up an exhibition, or rather three(mini) exhibitions. I’m currently Artist of the Month at Lulu and Hitch in

Hove, with work also in their sister shop in Shoreham, Lily and Harold, plusPizza Express in Hove.

Art was what I studied at University, afterwards I taught it for a while, butthen I concentrated my creative energy on writing instead. This wasn’t as muchof a leap as it sounds. My artwork had involved words more and more. My finalyear show had mock-ups of rooms where the carpet and wallpaper describeddaydreams. I carved chair legs into boats and projected dialogue onto rustyradiators. I made a pop-up book, from each page arising a full-size chair.

The arrival of The Boy diverted me back. I had been writing a novel, butparenthood meant I had about ten minutes of spare time (if that) a day, andsomehow this suited working on small drawings more than large fiction. Mysubject matter was taken up from ten years before; intertwining domesticlife and exotic creatures andstories. (Perhaps this is whereThe Boy gets his tales of giantsquids from.)

In 2006 I took up paintingagain, working outside whenweather and parenthood allowed.With The Boy still young, workingin oils was impractical so Iswapped to quicker-dryingacrylics, building up paintings inlayers so colour shows throughat each stage. My subject mattershifted to trees so I couldconcentrate on the moreabstract elements: mark-making,shapes between lines, and thesimple pleasure of paint. (We canbarely walk past a tree withoutthe Boy saying “I know who’d like topaint that!”)

The images on display this July –yes, of trees – are done as gicleeprints. (This means that they’reprinted using archival inks whichare faithful to the original and don’tfade). They start off as drawings using watercolour pencils, and thenscanned into the computer and enhanced and adapted.

I’ve enjoyed having these exhibitions over the last few years, in galleries,shops, cafés and restaurants. Apart from producing the work, I like thepractical preparations. I’ll take broad measurements, noting down potentialpitfalls such as interfering pipes and walls that have repelled nails in thepast. When it comes to putting up the work, I’ll be booked in for their leastbusy time, with chairs upturned, and staff swapping stories about the nightbefore as they sweep up. Again, I like the final hanging stage; deciding whatto put where, how things work next to each other, adjusting the levels.Meanwhile, I become a temporary specialist on nails.

I t was school sports daytoday. I spent the morningwatching my still four

year old stomping aroundthe race course sucking herthumb, occasionally lookingover at me, to make time togive me a foul look. It is,after all, my fault. My faultshe is not enjoying sports.She doesn’t know why it’smy fault but trust me, shewill think of a reason.Perhaps the sports shoes Ibought her are too ‘rubby’?Or I should have made sureshe was born with longerlegs. Everything is my fault.

If this is going to get worsewhen she’s a teenager, thenone of us is leaving homefrom age 13 till 16.

I could encourage her tojoin a circus perhaps? Howcan her blamey mopeyattitude get any worse? She’s worse than a teenager because at least with a teenager I would get a lie in! She’s waking between 5.30 and 7.30am. Atleast teenagers get up at midday and you can leave them to it! Even thoughthe four year old is moody, blamey and hates me, I still have to be with hercaring for her 24 hours a day.

Maybe that’s the problem. Too much mum and not enough other familymembers to disperse our tensions. Maybe she’s just had enough of me tellingher what to do. I certainly have had enough of telling her to say ‘please’, andthat she must wear socks if she doesn’t want her shoes to rub. It’s relentless,isn’t it, parenting!

I say the same thing over and over. Sometimes I say nothing. Sometimes I shout. Sometimes I look at her and think ‘maybe she’s deaf?’ No, she’s notdeaf – she’s laughing away to Peppa Pig, and just ignoring me. Then I shouttoo loud, she cries, and I am the worst mother in the world. My daughterhates me and I try to remind myself that in three minutes time she will haveforgotten and will be happily playing with a manky, the two-year-old KinderEgg toy she loves (rather than any of her expensive toys).

While I remember how annoying it was that my mother was always right,little did I know how annoying it was always being right. Having to watch your child fall over repeatedly even though you did tell them repeatedly not to wear the flip flops as “they make you fall over!” (I have tried throwing them away, she found them in the bin... I am an evil mother in her eyes; not a protective mother as in mine...) I’m standing at the race smiling, clappingand encouragingly saying her name. “Yay! Go sweetie!” My child hates thepressure of having too much attention. She grabs the relay baton, darting meanother foul look and arms crossed, stomps over the finish line to suck herthumb. I let someone else remind her to pass the baton on...

H alls and stairways are oftenthe first thing you see whenyou enter a home – yet they’re

often tatty and neglected. If youwant to make a good impression, it’s time to reassess those halls (and stairways) of shame...

Paintwork & colour As with any other room, colour makesa real difference to stairways andhalls. Think about how much naturallight reaches these communal areas,and decorate accordingly. A long,narrow hall painted floor to ceiling ina dark colour could feel downrightclaustrophobic – light colours on

walls and floors will open up thespace. Bold colours and wallpaperscan work very well if used to highlighta particular area – under a dado rail,for instance, or on a single section ofwall. Take care with these accents ifthe space is narrow. A good lightingscheme will also brighten things up.Paintwork in hallways and on stairscan take a real bashing – whatevercolour your walls and woodwork,keep them in good condition.

FlooringFlooring in halls and on stairs needsto be able to take some serious use.Ideally, it should be low-

maintenance, hard-wearing, andprovide some noise insulation.

Carpet has become fashionableonce more in these areas – it seemsno chic Brighton home is completewithout a striped stair runner. If youopt for carpet, make sure to chooseone that is designed for use in high-traffic areas. Stripes and patternsare your friend when it comes tomaintenance – variegated colourand pattern can disguise dirt or wearand tear. Carpets can also provideadded insulation to draughtycorridors and stairways, as well ashelping to keep noise levels down.

Wooden floors, laminates andstone are a good, hard-wearinghallway choice from a wear-and-tearpoint of view, but may not be quietenough underfoot for neighbours or

house-sharers. If you’re on a budget,a coat of paint can brighten upstairways. White or off-white borderswith a dark central ‘strip’ works verywell – but make sure you choose areally good quality paint, or it willwear and chip in no time.

Use the spaceFinally, remember that halls andstairs are part of your living area, too.Use these spaces to their bestadvantage. Bookshelves, from waistto head-height and painted the samecolour as the walls, add useful andunobtrusive storage to even a narrowhall. Over-door shelves can also be ahandy way of adding space to smallhomes. Finally, make good use of anyunder-stairs space for storage.

AFFORDABLE LUXURYYelo Architects goes green as it embarks on its latest project

Y elo Architects is the exciting new Brightonarchitectural practice launched last year bylocal chartered architect, Andy Parsons.

Located in the heart of Brighton, the practice hasbeen commissioned to work on several high-profile local projects – including the long-awaitedtransformation of the Brighton Dome ticket office.Yelo Architects was selected to work on theprestigious Brighton Dome job following acompetitive process which they won despite stiffcompetition from none other than Sir TerenceConran and his team of architects!

Led by experienced architect Andy Parsons, thepractice is currently working on a number ofvaried and exciting projects in the city rangingfrom designing one-off luxury houses to workingon significant major projects for commercialdevelopers on locally important sites.

Yelo Architects have recently embarked on theirlatest project, designing a unique and stunningdevelopment of around 70 new homes situatedbetween two of Hove’s finest parks.

Just under half of the homes on the site will beaffordable with a proportion of homes available tofirst time buyers on a shared ownership basis, whichcan start at as little as 25 per cent with the balancemade up of a rental fee – however there’s always theoption to buy more shares until you own outright.

Working closely with Yelo Architects on thisproject is Nicholas Dexter, professional landscapearchitect and registered member of the Society ofGarden Designers. Nicholas has won severalawards including medals at RHS Chelsea FlowerShow & Hampton Court. He has beencommissioned to produce a dynamic and

sustainable landscape to complement and link the green park land setting of Hove Park and HoveRecreation Ground which surrounds the site. Hisconcept is focused around mature, forest-sizednative trees which will be at least three storeyshigh when planted.

A key part of the vision includes a large,luxuriously planted communal garden completewith lush herb beds, raised edible planters andunique architecturally designed cages to formwalls within the grounds.
