BRIGHTON i360 RESTORES WEST PIER TOLL BOOTHS

Amuch-loved piece ofBrighton’s historic WestPier, a pair of toll boothsdesigned by Eugenius

Birch in Italianate style, whichoriginally stood at the entrance tothe pier, is being restored readyfor a return to the seafront by theBrighton i360 team.

One of the booths later becamethe well-known Rock Shop, whichclosed in 2009 after becomingstructurally unsound. It wassubsequently placed in storageafter being carefully dismantled in2012 with a plan for it to berestored and returned to the siteas part of the i360 development.

And with only 12 months untilthe anticipated opening of the

seafront attraction – which will bethe world’s tallest movingobservation tower – therestoration work on the easterntoll booth has begun.

A team of experts from SwanFoundry are currently shotblasting sections of the old ticketbooth to strip it back to baremetal. The technique involvessections of the booth being putinside a shot blaster, where theyare rotated while beingbombarded by steel shots ofvarious sizes for around fiveminutes. 

A replica of the western tollbooth will also be added to the site.

Trust’s chief executive, was amongthose pleased at the restorationand looking forward to the booths’ return to Brighton beach.

She said: “The West Pier Trust isdelighted that a key element ofthe i360 scheme will be thereinstatement of the pier’s tollbooths in their original positions.

“These iconic buildings adornedthe entrance of the pier when itopened in 1866 and, expertlyrestored and replicated, willsimilarly greet the public whenvisiting the i360.

“We’re thrilled that for the firsttime in 30 years both of EugeniusBirch’s splendid buildings will beback where they belong and markthe entrance to Brighton’s newestand most exciting attraction.”

David Marks, the architect whodesigned the i360, said it wasalways the intention to embracethe area’s heritage at the sametime as providing the city with amodern attraction.

He said: “Our vision for theBrighton i360 – a vertical pier – isto follow in the spirit of theoriginal pier, inviting visitors to‘walk on air’ and gain a newperspective of the city, just as they‘walked on water’ in the past and

viewed the city from the sea."I am delighted that we are

able to reuse parts of the Victoriancast iron supporting structure and restore parts of the originalpier to their former glory, settingthe historic alongside thefuturistic, to create an excitingnew architectural and tourist destination."

The i360 is also contributingannual funds to the West PierTrust – an arrangement which willbe invaluable for the charity toachieve its objectives whichinclude promoting the pier’shistory and keeping alive its memory.

Eleanor Harris, chief executiveat the i360, was similarly excitedby the returning two booths. Shesaid: "These beautiful buildingswill be publicly accessible andbecome our ticket office andheritage tea rooms; with a perfect vantage point to enjoyviews of the West Pier 'sea island' – Sussex's mostphotographed structure.” 

The toll booths will be re-builton Brighton Seafront in spring2016 at the same time as theBrighton i360 is completed.

BRIGHTON AND HOVE RADIO AWARDEDSMALL SCALE DAB TRIAL LICENCE

Ofcom have recently announced that around 60 stations willbegin broadcasting on digital radio for the first time using'small scale DAB' which includes Brighton & Hove Radiocovering Brighton and Hove. The trial licence application

includes Juice107.2, Radio Reverb, Smile Sussex, totallyradio,Resonance and Brighton City Student Radio.

The trials, a further step in the development of this new technology,are designed to test how it operates and understand how smaller radiostations could work together. If the trials are successful, UK listenerscould benefit from hundreds more local and community radio stationson digital radio in the future. Currently, the cost of broadcasting onDAB is beyond the reach of many small radio stations. This newapproach, pioneered in Brighton by Ofcom engineer Rashid Mustapha,means that small scale radio stations could start broadcasting on DABradio for a fraction of current costs.

The stations are expected to begin broadcasting on DAB digital radiofrom the summer for a period of nine months. Each successfulapplicant now has 12 weeks to launch their multiplex. Ofcom will thenwork with Government to decide on the next steps for the newapproach to radio broadcasting.

Brighton & Hove Radio’s Chairman, Daniel Nathan says, “It’s veryexciting that the technology we developed and tested here in Brightonin 2012 is set to become a cost effective option for radio broadcastersacross the board. Most significantly, it has the potential to open radioto new ideas and be a truer reflection of the UK’s diverse communitiesin 2015.”

I recall the meeting well. An obscure suggestion to build a sleekviewing tower on the Brighton seafront was unveiled by DavidMarks in a seafront hotel near the West Pier. The reaction wassurprisingly positive. That was in 2006.

There were certainly times over the ensuing years when I feared thatthe i360 would never go ahead. Even when photos were produced ofhuge pieces of steel, in a Dutch warehouse apparently, I was still a little

sceptical. With the arrival ofthe tug ‘Dutch Pioneer’, loadedwith the first six tower sections(‘cans’), there is no doubtwhatsoever that this project ishappening.

The i360 consists ofseventeen cans; the rest ofwhich will be arriving shortly.Logically, one would assumethat the tower will be builtfrom the bottom up. The top isactually being constructed firstand then lifted so that

successive cans can be slotted in below. This is presumably because it istricky to lift the top pieces into place by crane.

The cans are surprisingly slender – each is 3.9m in width. Taking intoaccount the aluminium cladding and a total height of 162m, the i360’sheight:width ratio is 40:1. To put this into perspective, the most slenderskyscraper in the world is Hong Kong’s Highcliff at 20:1.

Although I have often worried that the i360 wouldn’t go ahead, I havealways supported the idea. As time goes by, I like it even more and amkeen to see how it looks from various key vistas around the city.Hokusai’s Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji springs to mind (as does Ed andEmily Hepburne Scott’s 36 Views of Sussex Heights).

I know that I will be able to see it fairly unobstructed from my loungeand am very much looking forward to the idea.

GOING UP, UP, UPNews from the Brighton i360 site

The Brighton i360 tower came 'out of the ground' last week asthe first three cans of 17 were successfully lifted into place, thechassis for the glass pod was installed and the fourth, beingadded later today, bringing the tower to just over 28 metres

high already. Said Eleanor Harris, chief executive of Brighton i360, "It is exciting to

see the i360 taking shape so quickly. All the planning has paid off andthe team are making great progress and we are already ahead ofschedule and on track to complete the tower by September."

Last week saw the arrival of the first six giant steel cans, which willeventually form the i360’s 162-metre tower, and the three sections ofthe jacking frame, which will make the construction possible. Theyarrived by barge last Thursday and Friday before being lifted onto thesite earlier this week.

The first can, weighing in at around 80 tonnes, was lifted over thepublic footpath which dissects the construction site at around 9.30amon Monday. The team of expert engineers gently lowered the can intoplace and fixed it to the existing floor fittings in the attraction’sconcrete foundations. The anchor bolt frame, which is cased in 4,500tonnes of concrete, is fixed to the first can by 72 holding down bolts.Once finished, the tower will be held together by a total of 1,336 bolts ofvarying sizes.

The second can was then manoeuvred into place and fixed to the topof the first one, ahead of schedule, before the pod chassis was liftedonto site and lowered over both fixed cans.The distinctive red podchassis is what the glass viewing pod will be fitted to once the tower isfinished. When completed, the viewing pod will be around 18 metres indiameter and be able to carry up to 200 people. It will weigh 93 tonnes,including the 20 tonne chassis already in place, and be able to carry apassenger load of up to 15 tonnes.

Work is currently running ahead of schedule and timings are subjectto change, but the next pair of cans are due to be fitted today and the

second piece of jacking frame is then due to lifted and fitted into placeon Friday. The next (and final) barge – carrying the remaining steel cans– is due to arrive in the sea directly alongside the i360 site in the earlyhours of Tuesday June 23, with an estimated arrival time of around2.30-3am to coincide with high tide.
