Induction of the New President of the BHEAA, Julie Frith

Julie Frith is delighted to havebeen inaugurated as the newpresident of the Brighton & HoveEstate Agents Association for

2015, and regards it as one of thehighlights of her 25 year career inproperty. “I have some wonderfulpredecessors to follow,” says Julie, “andit will be an honour to follow in theirfootsteps.”

The Brighton & Hove Estate AgentsAssociation was formed in 1886, andmembership is seen as setting abenchmark for good standards incustomer service, business practice andprofessional credibility. Julie ismanaging partner of Mishon MackayNew Homes, a brand based uponcustomer service, so Julie is well placedto publicise the standards of theBHEAA.

However, one of Julie’s first duties isto organize the annual dinner for theAssociation, the highlight of the city’sproperty calendar. “I take this extremelyseriously,” says Julie.“The property

industry in Brighton and Hove is one of the most exciting in the country, and employs exceptionalpeople, no matter what area their expertise. Naturally we have a healthy rivalry and competitive spiritwhich drives us, and, like any industry which employs passionate people, we are proud to have thatrivalry. However, the Association’s annual dinner is a party night to celebrate our industry, a nightwhen we put our rivalries aside – just for one night of course – and enjoy each other’s company, swap tales and forge new friendships. Countrywide Residential Lettings scoops top industry awards

Countrywide Residential Lettings, the UK’slargest lettings agency, scooped the goldaward in three top categories – ‘LargeLettings Agency of the Year’, ‘Employer of

the Year’ and ‘Property Management Company ofthe Year’, at The Negotiator Awards 2014. Theagency was also delighted to receive the silveraward for ‘Innovator of the Year’.

Countrywide Residential Lettings, of which Kingand Chasemore is a part, fought off strongcompetition from over 360 entries to win theawards at the gala ceremony. Commenting on thesuccess, Martine McIntyre, Branch Manager of Kingand Chasemore on Church Road in Hove, said; “Weare delighted to scoop these top awards. The Negotiator Awards 2014 was attended byover 700 guests and was presented by actor andcomedian Alexander Armstrong. A silent auctionwas also held, with proceeds going to the nationalcharity Crisis, which is dedicated to helpingeliminate the causes of homelessness. 1883 saw Sir Thomas Graham Jacksonappointed to design a structure atBrighton College that would becomethe school’s most recognisable

element. Facing Eastern Road, Jackson’shuge red-brick edifice is what greets visitorsand the public. But a lack of funds led tothe omission of a key element of Jackson’sdesign.

The Cairns Tower opened in December tocomplete what was started by Jackson 130years ago. It takes its name from the

school’s current Head. A stubby gatehouse, consisting of a pair of archedentranceways with the Head Master’s office above, has been doubled inheight to become a glorious tower. Two floors, including an entertainingspace and huge office, have been added. A cupola at the top can now beseen from far into the distance (and is particularly attractive fromWhitehawk Hill at sunset).

An original design by Sir Thomas, a former Brighton College studentwho designed a number of Oxford colleges, provided inspiration for thetower, but Richard Griffiths Architects were employed to reinterpret thescheme. The results are incredible.

As per the rest of the building around it, brick has been used on thetower’s southern elevation and flint on the northern. There are terracottadressings throughout. Its windows are bronze, its cupola is lead, and itspelican weathervane is copper.

Such work is not cheapand justifying it is aninteresting exercise. My viewis that architecture hasmeaning. The tower isn’tabout two new rooms. Thereis a strong message behindit, waiting to be interpretedby anybody who cares tothink. To me, it is aboutfinishing what you set out toachieve, however much timeit takes.

During the recent stormy weather,my bedroom has been sufferingfrom an unwelcome spate ofgolden showers ... and not of the

variety that certain people might behappy to pay for in the bedroom.

A blocked downpipe is the culprit, and,every time it rains (which would seem tobe every night), filthy yellow water poursthrough my bedroom light fitting.

The first time it happened, TheBoyfriend and I were enjoying a cup of tea in bed, which we regrettablyhad to leave to go cold while I got out onto the roof in my night clothesand no shoes in the pouring rain in order to shove a stick down theblocked hole. Meanwhile, The Boyfriend bailed out the overflowinggutter with a milk pan. I spent therest of the day trying to unblock thedownpipe with various corrosivesand drain rods and hoped for thebest. I believe that the blockage hasbeen caused by the seagulls thatnest behind my chimney. Thewinged miscreants have spent allsummer dropping bones, sticks,pebbles and shells into my gutter, causing a blockage that it appearsnothing short of dynamite will shift. The blockage, invisible as well asimmovable, is the Scarlet Pimpernel of all blockages.

I am sure that a tool exists which is perfect to chase out theblockage, but I haven’t found it yet as I’ve mainly been at work duringdaylight hours (whenfortunately, it hasn’t beenraining). My past four nightshave been spent being wokenup at precisely 3.48am by thesound of my bedroom waterfeature cranking into action,then being kept awake by thenoisy torrent of water pouringthrough my ceiling and thehourly emptying of the vessel into which the water is falling.

Fortunately, I’ve always been a ‘glass half full’ (or in this case, ‘down-pipe half empty’) kind of person, so have been counting my blessingsthat at least the water comes out in one convenient place, albeit ratherperilously through the light fitting. Tonight though, the storm to end allstorms is forecast, so I’ve de-camped to the Small Daughter’s bedroomand left a large toy box under the light fitting, which should be good forat least 10 litres of rain water. My main fear is that my sodden ceilingmight fall in. I know I’m very lucky to have a roof over my head, but Idon’t want one all over my head in the middle of the night …
