Oh February, where for artthou February? January’sbig brother, and one stepcloser to the spring thaw.

What’s that? It’s just around thecorner? Oh good, I’ll calm myselfdown then ...

Chilly weather aside, we neverstop here at L-HQ. This week, AndrewKay is battling with any seasonedtraveller’s conundrum – what topack! It’s hard enough at the best of times ...on many an occasion I’ve found myself inforeign climes with a completely inappropriatewardrobe, but how much worse would it be ifyou had TV cameras pointing at you all the live-long day? Andrew, we sympathise.

But let’s momentarily forget dressing for theseasons, and the fact that we’re still shroudingourselves in winter woollies – we visited JoJo’sGelato this week, and can safely say we’vebeen convinced that gelato is a tasty treat the

whole year round. JoJo’s artisanrecipes are healthier than regularicecream too, so you can bet yourhundreds and thousands that we’llbe frequenting this venue well intothe spring and summer months. Haveyou tried it yet? Read our full write-upon page 15.

And there’s plenty more, besides.I’m not sure I could tell Art Deco fromBauhaus if my life depended on it,

but I can appreciate a beautiful thing when Isee it. For lovers of beautiful things and designaficionados alike, Decofairs is coming toBrighton and it’s the perfect opportunity toperuse vintage treasures, window shop (orshop for real!) talk to like-minded enthusiastsand generally indulge the senses. For more, seepage 17. Maybe winter’s not so bad.

Leading figures in thecommunity and voluntarysector in Brighton and Hovehave spoken of their

concerns about the next round ofspending cuts. They accept thatBrighton and Hove City Councilhas to try to save more than £20million in the coming financialyear. And the sum is likely to risein the years immediately after.

They want to help. But theybelieve that cuts to grants mayprove counter-productive. Theyfear that charities and voluntarygroups will close. Those beinghelped will turn instead to thecouncil or other taxpayer-fundedorganisations. And this will end upcosting the council money that itwas hoping to save.

The sums seem big at firstglance. It is proposed to cut grantfunding for community groups by£350,000. A further £200,000 isexpected to be taken fromservices that provide communitysupport for these groups. Expertshave suggested that the cutscould have not just a destabilisingeffect but force the closure ofcheap and effective organisations.

The council struck a deal withthem in better times to providegrants which are used for what isknown as core funding. With astable income, they have thecapacity to apply for money fromelsewhere such as the lottery, big

trusts or the government. Locally, dozens of organisations havegenerated income running intomany millions of pounds. All thisis now at risk.

Much of the youth work takingplace has its roots in realproblems. It is almost 16 yearssince Jay Kensett was stabbed todeath in Brighton and nearly tenyears since any gangs were asustained cause for concern. Whilemany factors have helped, targeted youth work has played akey part.

Ben Glazebrook, who helps runthe Brighton and Hove YouthCollective, said: “We work in someof the city’s most disadvantagedcommunities includingMoulsecoomb, Tarner, Hangletonand Knoll and Whitehawk.

“Aspects of our work emergedout of very challengingcircumstances for young people in

the past. Over the years, thecouncil and the community andvoluntary sector have workedincredibly hard together to ensurethat there is a strong youth offerhere. As a result, there are placesto go and things to do across thecity.

“We are concerned about thebigger impact on communitiesgiven the potential impact of thecuts as a whole and thecumulative effect of cuts toservices.” Mr Glazebrook is notalone. One local communityworker said; “There’s an old sayingthat idle hands make mischief. When that happens then thecouncil, the police and the NHSare likely to be the ones picking upthe bill.”

Another aspect of the budget toraise eyebrows in some quarters isthe proposal to take more than£80,000 out of the £120,000budget spent supporting themayor. Unlike Boris Johnson inLondon, the mayor of Brightonand Hove is not an executive ordecision-making mayor. In thewords of the author WalterBagehot, describing the role of themodern monarch, his or her role isdignified.

The mayor is a ceremonialposition and above party politics. He or she – this year it’s CouncillorBrian Fitch – meets and greetsvisitors, opens events, gives prizesand raises money for charity. Thedraft council budget spoke abouta “service redesign reducing themayoralty to basic functionsincluding removing staffingsupport”. It also suggested “noadministrative support fororganising events such asremembrance”.

Each mayor is different but thevast majority provide some of thebest PR that the council canexpect, and for a modest sum in a budget of more than £700 million.

There is no escaping thechallenging nature of the task ofbalancing the council’s books. Andwhichever party emerges with themost seats after the local electionsin May is likely to face even moreof a financial headache. It isperhaps easy to criticise individualcuts and harder to identifyalternatives. But the work of themayor and of a number of localcharities are aspects of thelooming budget that may repay arethink.

We are concernedabout the biggerimpact oncommunities

Brighton & Hove’sfirst ‘low

emission zone’has officiallylaunched –stretching

along themain corridor

from The OldSteine as far as Palmeira Square.

Air pollution is an invisiblekiller. It’s linked to lungproblems, heart failure andpremature deaths – and recentlythe World Health Organisationalso declared it to becarcinogenic. In the UK alonesome 29,000 people every yeardie because of bad air.

However working inpartnership with bus and taxicompanies we’ve developed aLow Emission Zone scheme thatis set to make a real difference.

Bus companies large andsmall are playing their part inmaking public transport cleaner.Brighton & Hove Buses hasinvested £6m in a raft of hybridbuses running across the city, cutting emissions and fuel bills.Meanwhile Cuckmere Buses, asmall company run byvolunteers, has just spent£90,000 on a new clean bus.

The benefits stretch far andwide across the city. Nearlyevery single bus in Brighton &Hove passes through the zone -so as well as cleaning up the airin town, it also means lesspollution for anyone living, working or playing near a busroute across the city.

Taxi drivers are also doingtheir bit by turning off theirengines while stationary at taxiranks. This builds on oursuccessful joint project fitting atleast 25 taxis with cleanerexhaust technology to slashemissions.

In some of our city centrehotspots, traffic fumes havebeen double the European andEnglish legal limits for decades.Whether by making publictransport, cycling and walkingsafer and more reliable, or byworking with partners like thebus company to reduceemissions, the only way to cleanup the air we all breathe is toreduce the number of pollutingvehicles on our streets.

HOTEL PLANSAfter years of false hope it seemsthat plans to redevelop theShoreham Civic Centre site aremoving forward.

The original plan was to put asupermarket on the site. But mysources tell me that Adur DistrictCouncil chiefs now hope to attracta hotel chain to take on the keysite.

Expect more developments inthe coming months.

TOURISM BLOWAs cuts to public funding deepen,Worthing Borough Council hasannounced it will close its VisitorInformation Centre.

The building opened with muchaplomb three years ago. Anddespite more than three millionpeople a year visiting the town, councillors believe they have noother option.

It's not all bad news though, asthree red phone boxes are to beturned into mini pop-up centres, while online info will bedeveloped for those who are tech-savvy.

But coming hot on the heels ofBrighton and Hove doing a similarmove, lets hope that there'slimited impact on visitor numbersto our area.

CHANGING TIMESIt used to be ridiculed as aretirement town, where newtrends and fads were laughed at.But Worthing is changing – notleast with the opening of a newpioneering cafe.

Daisy Moo's Bakehouse in BathPlace serves only vegetarian andvegan food – a common site inBrighton, but not so much alongthe coast. But given the reaction ithas provoked in the first fewmonths, it seems like residentshave taken the shop to their hearts.

It's yet further proof thatWorthing is a town on the up.

BUDGET BAFFLERIn little more than a month'stime, Brighton and Hove CityCouncil will set its budget. Thequestion over how much counciltax we'll pay is still up in the air.

What is clear is that £25 millionworth of savings must be found ifthe books are to be balanced. However, the whole plan hasbeen thrown up in the air after agroup of ruling Greens said theydisagreed with making any cutsat all. This goes directly againstwhat the party has been saying allalong – that a 5.9% council taxrise will be enough to keep vitalservices running.

But despite backing theiropponents into a corner, someGreens have now turned aroundand said this is not enough –handing the advantage straightback to Conservatives andLabour.

There's a lot still to come onthis, no doubt, until the budget isset in February. And for thoseinterested, some of the issues willbe debated at a Have Your Sayevent in the Brighthelm Centrethis evening (Tuesday 27 January)from 7.30pm.

CARNIVAL CANCELLEDMore than 20,000 peopleattended last year's KemptownCarnival. But, despite it being oneof the most popular outdoorevents in the city, 2015's versionhas been cancelled.

The reason? Well, organisersput it down to money – claimingthat not enough can be raised tosupport the event and pay for

things like suspending parkingbays and policing.

Not everyone appears thatupset however, with some localtraders claiming the event forcedthem to shut up shop and loseout on a day's income.

SAFEHAVENIt is one of the biggest issuesaffecting older people. And nowBrighton and Hove Bus Companyhas got on board with a plan tomake things easier for those withdementia.

The firm has created two‘safehavens’ – which means thosewith the condition can receivesupport, advice and even just acup of tea if they are out andabout and feel confused.

The area at the OneStop travelshop in Brighton's North Streetopened last week. Withthousands from the city suffering, this support will make a massivedifference to some.

SALT 'N' PEPPERLast week saw Sussex hit with thefirst sprinkling of the white stuff. And, with the temperatures nowhovering just above freezingdaily, it seems that snowpreperations are well underway.

One of the more novel ideas isputting salt in the Pepperpot nearQueens Park. It's all part of a planby community activists to makesure that if heavy snow doescome then there are enoughsupplies to clear the roads, andpathways to ensure people canget out and about.

This week’s headlines from across the city

HITTING THE HIGH NOTESGuy Lloyd is fulfilling a long-term musical ambition ...

nothing done. Nobody did. It wastoo hot and we were too lazy.

But life has moved on and I’mlucky enough to live in a city thatis (mostly) full of creative, inspirational people that don’t justtalk about doing that ‘thing’. Theygo out and do it. Themore people dothat, the more itinspires the peoplearound them. AndI’ve been inspired.Inspired to dosomething Iprobably shouldhave done twentyfive years ago. I’mlearning to sing.

Regular visitorsto this blog willknow that my band recentlyreformed after twenty three years. Before that band, I was in others,so all in all I’ve probably been inbands on and off since 1989. In allof those bands, I have been thesinger. And in all of those bands, Ihave been unable to sing.

I’m lucky in that the band I havehad around me during that time

jumpiness. The scratching, and ofcourse, the anxiousness. Ipresumed that was due to her notwashing.

I smugly walked back over andgave everyone the drinks. I tookClare by the hand, looked herdead in the eye and simply said; “Iknow. Shhhh, shh, don’t worry Iknow. And I thought you justweren’t washing. We’re all reallyproud.” She looked back, pausedand replied; “Thank you.” It was abeautiful moment. We went outthe next night too and Clare hadto be taken home, she was sodrunk.

Ah well, at least she had a goodtime! Just like Brighton Lights! We’re always having a great timewith no restrictions or barriers.

This week we’ve got DavidStreeter from partypappers.comtelling us how he can make yourparty seem like The Oscars. Amyand Ruth Anslow from Brighton’snewest independent supermarket,Hisbe, popped in to talk all thingsfood and drink. Amisha, a fashionwriter, told us how to dress andthe author of It’s A Dog’s Life,Steven Ankers, told us storiesabout vets and animals. Music thisweek comes from the Italianlegend that is Giovanni! His voiceis as delicious as his freshly bakedbread.

It’s safe to say it’s a jam-packedweek, with shows broadcastWednesday to Saturday at 7pm onFreeview channel 8, Virgin Mediachannel 159 and live online atwww.thelatest.tv. If you ever wantto be in the audience, get yourselfdown to the Latest Music Bar for6.30pm. A night full of freeentertainment, and the bar isopen throughout! Remember yourumbrellas though. It’s a bit wet ...you’ll want to keep dry, right?

(there’ve been changes but I’m noMark E. Smith), have been atalented bunch of musicians andthey have carried me (sometimesliterally) through the gigs on awave of musical euphoria andheavy alcohol consumption.

In short, it was generallyaccepted by theband, the audience, but mostly by methat I could not sing. But as long as I wasprepared to dress asSuperman, a womanand at one stage, stark butt-naked,then I could stay inthe band. I wasn’tfooled. I knew I wasin the band because

I was prepared to make an arse ofmyself on stage in front of a liveaudience and I was more thanhappy with this.

Anyway, that is about tochange. I want to be able to hitthe odd note. Just to shockpeople. It’s all very well mincingaround in a cat suit but I want tobe able to move peopleemotionally. And not just towardsthe bar for some kind of escaperoute from my screaming.

So I signed up for one to onesinging lessons just beforeChristmas and I’ve had threelessons since. It’s clear I am notgoing to be the next FreddieMercury. Not even the next MattCardle. But I’m enjoying it; it’skind of cathartic to really belt outa tune. There is something quitespiritual about it, which is one ofthe reasons why music is such animportant part of our lives. AndI’m actually noticing someimprovement.

But for me, as a front man, itwill always be more about thelyrca and the eyeliner than theactual singing. Some things justcome more naturally to me.

Now I know I don’t look it(come on, go with me onthis) but I am about to hitthe ripe old age of 59. It’s not

a milestone year I know – that comesin 12 months’ time – but it issomewhat daunting.

When I say I don’t look it, what Isuppose I really mean is that I don’tdress it. I still have the wardrobesensibilities of an art student andthis became very apparent a fewweeks back when I started to packfor my trip.

I’m not a fan of watching myselfon the TV. Telly puts on ten poundsthey say; what they don’t say is thatit puts on ten pounds in everydirection. I guess that self-image isbased on a vision that you hold ofyourself when you feel that youlooked your best. Hahahaha – nochance of me hitting that 32-inch

waist rack any time soon.I was packing with a view to

filming. That means a lot of clothesthat can work in a variety ofcombinations to give the illusion ofa vast wardrobe. Some days I needto change three or four times, which is obviously not possible witha 23 kilo baggage allowance andtrousers that burst the 40-inchwaist barrier – cloth issurprisingly heavy.

This timearound I also hadthe problem ofradical differences intemperature.Vancouver can dropto minus four at thistime of the yearwhereas Las Vegascan hit 16 degrees.

In the end I optedfor shirts over T-shirts and a light butvery smart suit. Witha selection of ties andcravats it seemed likea plan.

Twelve days, though, proved to be rather a lotof shirts. I’m not short ofshirts, I have in excess of50 which I know is rathertoo many. Many of these are ofcourse of the colourful ‘Hawaiian’

swimming costume, a pair ofshorts, a pair of jeans and a warmcoat – one with a zipper to ward offthose cold pacific winds. I packedan umbrella too and scarf andgloves, not wanting to leaveanything to chance. Of coursethere were the usual smalls but Iwon’t bother you with that.

It’s a sartorial nightmare andone that was highlighted when acolleague commented on mywardrobe in a less thancomplimentary manner. I brushedit off at the time but later I startedto think, is it time for me to breakout the comfy corduroys andwoolly cardigans?

I sat on the edge of my bed andlooked at the rack of shirts, thetrousers in bright yellow and pinkand the suit that Rupert Bearwould not look out of place in.Memories of previous wardrobescame floating back – the KatharineHamnett years, the body-map era,my long acquaintance with PaulSmith and a vast array of armysurplus and vintage that would be the envy of so many Brightonclothing stores. It made me smile. Now where did I put those dungarees?

Of the rest I chose aselection of plain, stripesand checks, rather a lot ofchecks, so many that itlooked like a wardrobehamper for a touringproduction ofOklahoma. Notinappropriate I thoughtand rather jolly. Maybe

A ROYAL FLUSH

Adele’s neighbour, the lovely Zoe Ball, has this weekannounced that she has no intention of putting herself inthe running for the presenter’s job on the primetime StrictlyCome Dancing shows.

Speaking to the Daily Express, Zoe said; “I like my job on It TakesTwo, so I’m not gunning for Tess’s job or anything like that.” Zoe,who replaced Claudia on the BBC1 shows last series following herdaughter’s hospital ordeal, joked that the main reason shewouldn’t want Tess or Claudia’s spot in the limelight is the hardwork involved in tracking down dresses to wear on air for twoshows a weekend.

Zoe also revealed that as a self-styled ‘Strictly geek’ she isgetting over-excited about hosting the Strictly Come Dancing livetour. The 31 show dance spectacular starring ex-contestantsincluding Mark Wright, Simon Webbe, Alison Hammond, Scott Millsand Caroline Flack opened at The Barclaycard Arena inBirmingham last week.

GELATO TIME!With a spectrum of flavours and artisan expertise, it’s timeto experience mouth-watering gelato at JoJo’s ...

Watch Latest Entertainment on on Freeview channel 8, channel 159 or at thelatest.tv

Gelato – the latest gourmet trend toemerge from Italy – is taking Brightonby storm with the opening of JoJos

gelateria on Western Road. Over 50 mouthwatering flavours, including

sorbets, are prepared artisan-style by the Italiangelato chef on-site. Ranging from moretraditional flavours like French vanilla andpistachio (both highly recommended by thestaff) to rose or blue bubblegum for those with a more adventurous palate, the onlyproblem … is choosing.

In fact, the whole experience at JoJo’s is alittle Willie Wonka. Behind the gleaming gelatocounter, in row after delectable row, are thevarious sauces (milk, white, dark, toffee, coffee),fruit sauces and a mindboggling selection oftoppings, from crushed Oreos to melted Belgian chocolate.

For those not in a gelato mood, a butterscotchwaffle or a fresh strawberry crepe might just dothe trick. Milkshakes are a popular choice here, too – with flavours like marshmallow andCream Egg, it’d be rude not to try! Hot drinks

include pink lady white tea and RainforestAlliance coffee. And a breakfast menu withbagels and granola is in the pipeline.

But what exactly is gelato? And how is itdifferent from ice-cream?

Whilst ice-cream is traditionally made withheavy cream and eggs, gelato is milk-basedwith fewer or no eggs, making it a healthieroption with up to 50% less calories. It’s alsoabout the air, or lack of it … during thechurning process, less air is incorporated intothe gelato mixture than with ice-cream,making for a smoother, creamier taste and asilky soft scoop. At JoJos, state-of-the-artequipment blends ingredients imported fromItaly to produce a really authentic gelato thatthe family-run business is proud of.

Set on three levels, JoJo’s is a temple ofspaciousness and light, with two huge glasswindows perfect for people-watching with a

Knickerbocker Glory to hand. With itsbeautiful sleek interiors, brightly colouredbooths and trendy photo art, this place is theepitomy of “modern Italian chic”.

Seating up to 85 people, there is also aprivate space perfect for children’s parties orspecial events. The gelateria’s luxuryupholstered booths also provide that little bitof intimacy for a tete a tete over a sticky gingerpudding! Stunning neon signs and moodlighting that slowly changes from tangerineorange to cool blue gives it a fresh, modernedge, while bespoke furniture imported fromMilan nods to its Mediterranean origins.

Night owls need not despair – JoJos’s lateopening times (til 11pm) mean gelato is notjust the ticket for kids’ birthday parties or thatteatime temptation; it’s the perfect place for anevening indulgence, too.

When I visited JoJos recently on a bitterlycold afternoon, it was nearly packed. One ladysat on a bar stool protectively nursing a HotFudge Sundae. “It’s my special time, just meand the Sundae,” she said with a smile, when Iasked her how she was enjoying it.

Isn’t it time you made some gelato time?JoJo’s Gelateria, 123-4 Western Rd, Brighton,01273 771532. Open 8am-11pm, 7 days a week.Prices start at £2.20 a scoop for gelato, andclassic sundaes from £4.99. 10% discount forStudents with ID. Email: [email protected]

HIGHPOINTSIR CHRIS BONINGTONConnaught Theatre, Worthing,20 January 2015 ★★★★★

It’s hard not to like Sir Chris.Humble, unassuming, demureeven. Yet over the course of histwo hour talk/lecture it becomes

evident that this man has doneextraordinary things in the world ofmountaineering. If there was a ticklist of mountains to climb he’s prettymuch ticked them all, andsometimes several times over. By itsvery nature, mountaineering is astruggle and sometimes humanscome off second best, as was evidentby the amount of colleagues he hadlost over his many expeditions. That there weren’t more is minor miracle. It’s accepted but never down played by Sir Chris. Emotional, inspiringand a thoroughly decent bloke.Lee Stevens

J MASCISIt’s lucky I already know what J Mascis looks like. At 5ft 11, being able tosee over a crowd is rarely an issue for me, but J Mascis fans obviously eattheir greens as the stage was completely invisible from my handicappedvantage point towards the back of the room. The venue was filled tobursting; a sea of plaid and heavy knitwear beneath a fog of condensation– nobody had elbow-room enough to remove their coats and scarves, itseemed, and the venue’s climate had shifted from temperate to tropic as aresult.

Still, he sounded amazing. Heady, ethereal guitar over gravelly yetgentle falsetto. Imperfect, vulnerable, and beautiful. A departure from thevisceral energy of Dinosaur Jr and Witch, and welcome for it. Rousingapplause and a perfunctory encore (J Mascis is a modest man) testified tothat. The Haunt, 9 January 2015★★★★★ Louise Bevan

WITHERING LOOKSEssentially a ‘Bronte For Dummies’ or ‘Bitesize Bronte’ (copywritepending!), as if the lives and works of The Brontes was performed by amental offshoot of the Women’s Institute. But it’s good fun and deservedmore of an audience. Performers Sue Ryding and Maggie Fox provided atrue smorgasbord of storytelling and comic styles/vehicles; the ghosts ofthe Moors, Wuthering Heights reduced to a 30 second paper cut out show,Anne Bronte as a tiny hand puppet. Ludicrously eccentric but played verydryly to accentuate the humour. The biting satire gave it that little fizz too.Cleverly put together and performed to a sharp degree. Give it a go.Connaught Theatre, Worthing, 17 January 2015★★★★★ Lee Stevens

REWARDING PATIENCEWine expertise from Annabel Jackson

The 2012 Premier Crus ofBurgundy’s Chablis region are onthe market now, their qualitytestament to the ever increasing

amount of effort being put into thevineyards in this climatically marginalregion. Even in a “not easy” vintage like2012, then, great wine can still be made, particularly from biodynamic vineyards.

The 2012s are particularly attractivebecause they’re drinking well now, butcan also be laid down. In general, theyare taught and tingling, lean and limey. The 2013 vintage was even harder thanthe 2012 – but it seems that patience

may have been rewarded in 2014, which is looking highly promising. Yet go back 25 years or so, and wine

producers in Burgundy’s core Cote d’Or,a limestone escarpment which stretchesfrom Dijon to Santenay, held this satellitecomponent part of the region in lowregard, says Herve Tucki. Now, esteemedBurgundy names on the escarpment, likeFaiveley, Drouhin and Bize, ownvineyards in Chablis too. “But one thingdoesn’t change,” Tucki says, “and that’sthe terroir. We’re Kimmeridgian”. Herefers, of course, to the unique clay andlimestone rock formations of the Jurassic period, its key influence on thevines resulting in uniquely steely, mineral wines.

Tucki is brand ambassador for cooperative La Chablisienne. Thiscooperative was the first to be formed in France (1923) and sells eightmillion bottles per year, which accounts for about one quarter of theregion’s total production. But inspite of a large portfolio, LaChablisienne is highly respected, and produces terroir winesacross 30 different crus, includingsix Grand Crus and 15 PremierCrus, the remainder spreadacross Chablis and Petit Chablis. It works with 300 vine-growingfamilies across 20 villages.

Unusually among coops, it isfirst a wine producer and not only interested in commercialsuccess. Its wines offertremendous value for theconsumer in a region whereprices are slowly creeping up.

Hi Josie, how are you today?Hi! I'm good thanks, hope you are too!

Yes I am, thank you. ‘Cara Josephine’ is being touted as your mostpersonal show to date. When I first found out Iwas going to be an aunt I immediately tried tomove to a home that would allow my niece tovisit – even though she hadn’t been born yet. What’s the most surprising thing the arrival ofyour niece has evoked in you?I just was not prepared for the visceral amountof love that I have for her. I just LOVE her somuch that I don't know what to do with all ofthe feelings. It's wonderful. And that brings suchan excitement about what she will grow into andwhat her life will be like. So I recommend it toeveryone!

You’ve mentioned your family in previousshows, more specifically your sister. What is

the best thing you’ve benefittedfrom by having your sister in yourlife? My sister and I are quite different, she's much more practical and no-nonsense than I am. I think we bothlike having someone so important in ourlives with such a different perspective. I reallylook up to her, she's very brave andindependent and a great mum. Also she candrive so she gives me lifts quite a lot if I go toKent.

#Everydaysexism, #illridewithyou and othersseem to reflect a grassroots social mediamovement against the prejudice andaggression growing in a financially poorersociety. Do you see this as part of a constantgathering of momentum for the positive, or asad indictment of the current status quo?I don't really see them as either, I think. There

will always be things to fight and therewill always be so many people doinggood things to fight them and buildingthings for the good. I try and take heart

from the good things and hope to do whatI can, if that doesn't sound too wanky. I

think saying that society is buildingwholeheartedly towards progress or falling intothe abyss isn't helpful either way, because thereis always so bloody much going on! The onlinestuff has been great though.

Comedians usually comment upon injustice orlack of opportunities – whereas you haveactually addressed these with theestablishment of the Arts Emergency Services.Such a great thing to exist. How difficult was itto set up and publicise?Thank you! It wasn't difficult. Although it's beenhard work, it's been one of the most rewardingand awesome things I've ever been involvedwith. It's all really down to Neil the co-founderwho works incredibly hard to build it up. Itexists to help young people study and pursuelives spent doing what they'd love to do, and todefend studying and making arts of all kinds. Ithink we have been lucky because so manypeople have identified with the cause and givenus support.

You’ve collected rave reviews for many yearsnow, yet very much give the impression ofmarching to the tune of your own drum. Howimportant are reviews to you, and – tobutcher a quote – are some reviews moreequal than others?I don't read reviews because I think they canget in your head, and, even if they are goodones, they can confuse you as to what you'redoing and why. I am always a bit wary aboutasking for feedback – I tend to only ask a fewpeople who I really trust. I think stand-up canmake you a bit of a control freak – you sort ofdevelop your own internal voice that tells youwhat to keep in or take out and I find reviewscan muddy that judgement. Having said that,it's really lovely if people like what I do andthere are some reviewers I really respect so I'mchuffed if they like my stuff.

Family has moved to front and centre in thisshow, along with heartbreak. If you could giveJosie from ten years ago a piece of advice, what would it be?Oh god. It would be ... be less cagey aboutsaying yes to things and never vanity-searchyour own name on the internet!

And what do you hope for the Josie of tenyears in the future?I just hope that I am happy and hopeful and allof that hippy nonsense. My dream is to makesome films and write better stand-up showseach time.

What’s the next thing you’re looking forwardto doing?I'm hoping to make a feature film in thesummer. I've spent the last 18 monthsdeveloping the script and now hopefully we willbe able to get the money and make it happen.

BRIGHTON’S ARTY

Imet the Dane at work. And it was always inevitable that thepartnership of an editor with an art director would give birth toour own publishing enterprise – albeit in our spare time. Nowyou might expect that two creative types living and working

together would be the recipe for tantrums and tiffs. But it’s all prettyharmonious, chez Krog … well, as long as I get my own way andTorben keeps his Scandi mitts – and grammar – off the Arty Twitterfeed.

So we’re alwaysinterested to see theresults of other creativecouplings. And in thisyear’s book – Brighton’sArtists 2015 – we’rethrilled to be featuringagain the paintings ofJo Watters-Pawlowskiand for the first timeKris Pawlowski’scaptivating photography.

The underlying force behind Jo’s paintings is ‘abstractexpressionism’ as she plays with the figurative elements oflandscapes and seascapes to create an emotional, abstractresponse. Her aim is to evoke a reaction, rather than depict a scene, with each artwork carefully built up layer by layer using oil, acrylicsand resist-work techniques that lend a spectacular intensity to theend results. In contrast – and firmly rooted in reality – Kris has apassion for photographing artists, craftsmen and musicians. His styleis simple, as he aims to capture his subjects in a relaxed and informalway. Both utterly brilliant in their own unique ways!

Out of town: Pelham House Hotel is holding its first Open ArtExhibition, with all works chosen by the staff at the hotel. More than90 submissions were received from artists from Lewesand surrounding areas, and the final selection includes a wonderfullyhigh standard of various styles and mediums, including prints, oils, acrylics, photographic prints, collage and mixed media. A percentageof all sales will be donated to the Rocking Horse Appeal. Theexhibition runs until 24 February.www.artymagazines.com

IT TAKES TWO

This year’s Oscar nominations are out and, while a littlepredictable in some respects, there are also a few surprises.Let’s talk about four films we have reviewed on PostFeatureand how they fared in the race for nominations:

Foxcatcher is one of the most ‘Oscar-buzzy’ of the year! Especiallysince it includes Steve Carell’s prosthetic-heavy characterization of thepsychopathic wrestling enthusiast John Dupont. A straightperformance by a comedian in a role that is anything but likeable (andpreferably involves an aesthetic change) is always likely to getawards – one need only think of Mo’Nique’s Oscar for 2009’s Precious.Personally, however, I’m sad that Carell was included in the ‘LeadActor’ category in place of Channing Tatum, who really did act hissocks off and has come on so far since his Step Up days!

If you managed to catch PostFeature last week or have seen it onour catch up service, you’ll know exactly how I feel about AmericanSniper. Content and storytelling aside it is certainly a wonderfullydirected and beautifully shot film, so not surprising to see it also in the‘Best Picture’ category – and obviously half of the American politicaldivide agrees with the source material. Interesting to note thatstaunch Republican Clint Eastwood is not up for ‘Best Director’,however …

Nightcrawler was creepy and awful. In a very, very good way. JakeGyllenhaal’s performance as the desperate, immoral sociopath whoblurs the line between observer and participant in this tale of sleazynighttime news-gathering was stunning. There was a lack of vanity inmaking himself over as being so utterly unlikable, and an artistry inhis inhabiting a character able to make the hairs on the back of anaudience’s necks raise from the other side of a screen. And yet, no‘Lead Actor’ nomination! The only nomination for Nightcrawler was‘Best Original Screenplay’ – not even the fabulous Rene Russo got anod in the ‘Supporting Actress’ category.

In another nominations shocker, Gone Girl, the film that for a fewmonths at the end of the summer had everyone talking (and everycouple over a certain age rushing to see it, don’t ask me why) alsoreceived just the one nomination. David Fincher’s pitch-blackblockbuster only managed to see Rosamund Pike put into the ‘BestActress’ category and was utterly excluded from many categories itcould have sat comfortably in, including ‘Best Picture’, ‘Best Director’and ‘Best Cinematography’. I feel most aggrieved for poor Gillian Flynnwho expertly adapted her own best selling novel.

total tangent that simplypresented itself and tookover a good 20 minutes ofshow time.

Dara O’Briain (playing atEastbourne’s CongressTheatre in May) also givesthe impression at his liveshows that everything he’sserving up is comingstraight from you, as he

banters with the audience and reactsdirectly to them.

Comedian Dan Antopolski once told meabout the exercising of the comedy muscle. It’s something every professional comedianworks on and sharpens. If you don’t writeand perform regularly it gets saggy fromlack of use, but a truly toned comedy musclesees the punchlines wherever they mightpresent themselves and acts accordingly. This is why truly good comperes, likeKrater’s Stephen Grant, are so compelling. There is that danger that anything canhappen and still be made funny, still be apart of the show. And it can. Because a goodcomedy brain can see it.

So, in conclusion, if you want to see magicin words and free your mind with laughter, there are some great shows to go and see todo just that. There’s a reason some peopleare said to be at the top of their game. These are the comedy marathon runners.Ross Noble - Tangentleman, Concert Hall,Brighton Dome, 31 January & 1 February2015, 8pm, £26, http://brightondome.org

Years ago someone toldme; “A dirty mind is a joyforever.” I would like tosubvert that to simply,

“A funny mind is a joy forever.”Anyone who has ever seen a topcomedian’s work-in-progresswill know the marvel that is afunny and well-toned mindfeeling their way to the gags, and the delight at the discoveryof a brand new funny – most especially in aplace they never thought to find it. Somepeople are blessed that every show has themseemingly stumbling upon comedy gold asfrequently as those who first started themyth that London’s streets were made of theshiny stuff. Those shows are just magicbubbles in time where the imagination isunleashed, and are not to be missed. One’scoming to town this weekend.

Ross Noble is great. The title of his showsays it all – ‘Tangentleman’. With a looseidea of where he’s going thematically at thestart of the night, and a willingness toabandon the map completely shouldanother more interesting adventure presentitself, the natural creativity and bareloopiness is a joy to behold. And he’s notalone with this gift.

Russell and Cowan continue tocollaborate to this day: “We bothlike so many different types ofmusic, whereas some people aremore purist. Our influences runfrom Sarah Vaughan to Bach, KateBush to Arvo Part, and J Dilla toAlice Coltrane. We love everythingfrom dirty, squelchy dubstep to oldschool soul. We nudge each other inthe right directions,” says Alice.

The periodic table is fascinating.Although the elements in theperiodic table are few innumber, they act just like the

alphabet. By joining together indifferent combinations, the elementsmake up all the matter in the knownuniverse. Every element in the periodictable, aside from hydrogen, isessentially created when a starexplodes. It is therefore very fitting thatmost of the elements in the periodictable are silvery/grey in colour.

The main composition of stars ishydrogen, carbon oxygen and nitrogen,

and by no coincidence, so is ours! We are made from stardust. Wereally should stop a while and celebrate how far we have come in

science and technology. Ourunderstanding of the elements isentering a new era, especially as thedividing line between physics andchemistry gets more blurred withthe advances in quantum chemistry. If we take the element oxygen, weknow that it combines withhydrogen to make water, withcarbon to make carbon dioxide, andthat carbon, hydrogen and oxygentogether make alcohol.

But back in 1774, Joseph Priestley, after warming nitre – potassiumnitrate – described what we now know to be oxygen in the followingway: “The feeling of it in my lungs was not sensibly different from thatof common air, but I fancied that my breast felt peculiarly light andeasy for some time afterwards. Who can tell but that in time, this pureair may become a fashionable article in luxury. Hitherto only two miceand myself have had the privilege ofbreathing it.”

Here at the STEM centre, we areworking on a very exciting project with DrKate Howland from the University ofSussex, and with her MSc students. I can’tsay too much about it, but our aim is toensure that no one under our roof everyawns again when we mention theperiodic table!
