Anumber of my friends have been dating of late. Maybe it’s thesummer, or maybe it’s just that the Brighton Fringe is over sothey have time to tell me of their exciting escapades.Regardless, the thing that strikes me the most is the wide

variety of different kinds of dating circuits there are out there, and howthe choice really is yours as to how brief and sweet – or intense andshacked-up-by-next-Tuesday-for-the-rest-of-your-lives – yourrelationships can be.

Tinder and Grindr seem to beresponsible for a high turnoverof dating opportunities, makingrelationships more disposable(and exciting) with the ease atwhich a new one could be atyour fingertips. And by that I’mnot advocating dumping yourlong-term lover to see if thegrass is greener and what it’s like to not always be the one mowing it.But I have noticed a certain stacking of dates on a single evening –meaning that there literally is another prospective love waiting in thewings. It’s like self-orchestrated speed dating with an hour for eachinterviewee instead of three minutes. And you’re the one in charge ofthe pinger-thingy.

Alternatively, I’ve also witnessed the slower more drawn out pre-relationship courting that’s been a bit of a joy to behold. Going on apicnic, having a lunch date, stepping back and playing with that firstinteraction the online alternatives circumnavigate entirely – does thisperson that you like, like you back? I mean ‘like’ like. Y’know. More thanDoc Martin but less than Doctor Who?

Plus, of course, this is Brighton so if there’s any other quirk or delightinbetween there’s bound to be a group or forum for it, although whethermy friends will tell me about their use of those remains to be seen.Summer is here and anything is possible. And I can’t wait.

Iwas born with a squint, don’tlaugh, it wasn’t bad but oneeye was, and I believe still is,slightly lazier than the other.

For years I would attend theeye clinic on a regular basis onlyto be sent away with the soothingwords that it would probablycorrect itself, which I guess intime it did.

From the age of seven I wasdischarged and never returned. Iwas of course relieved becauseback then the solution that otherkids seemed to be given was apair of clear plastic specs withone lens covered in flesh pinkcloth sticking plaster. It was not agreat look although years later Isat next to Adam Ant on a busand he was wearing those verysame clear plastic specs andsomehow managed to pull thelook off. To be honest, he couldhave been sporting a cabbageand a pint of custard and hewould have looked good, hereally was a very beautiful youngman.

I didn’t need glasses but I sortof wished that I did because Ithought that with them I mighthave managed to achieve just asplash of his glamorous charisma.Ah well, he obviously had goodgenes, and jeans!

It was much later in life that Istarted to struggle to read. I builtup quite good arm musclesmoving heavy books backwardsand forwards in front of my eyesin the hope that at some pointthe text would become legible. Ofcourse it did not and I had tomake a visit to an optician.

Reading glasses they said, notvery strong but strong enough toenable the comfortable digestionof a book again. I was delightedand for a few years readingglasses did the trick – except forone thing. I did have a tendencyto forget them. There’s nothingmore annoying than discoveringthat you need your specs andthat you have put them downsomewhere.

Now that somewhere could infact be anywhere, in thebedroom, in the bathroom, in theoffice, in a restaurant, quitefrankly they were left all over theplace.

The next time I had a check upI discovered that my long visionwas a little worse and I enquired

about having varifocals. Now Iknow that the word varifocals issynonymous with getting oldand I had terrible thoughts thatif I got them I would have tomove to Eastbourne or

Worthing. Apologies to both asthey are indeed very fine townsindeed with plenty going forthem and that was a cheap andeasy jibe.

Varifocals in fact gave me anew lease of life, I don’t mindwearing specs and I rather enjoygoing in for my regular check up.

These days I go to Specky Wrenwhich is in the entrance way tothe newly regenerated LondonRoad Open Market. I like that too.

The Specky Wren furnished mewith the big red specs you see inmy picture (look left). I lovedthem from day one, they had thatgreat slightly mad professor lookthat goes so well with my madprofessor hair.

The trouble is that my readingis now a bit worse, added to

The NNJS is credited withcoordinating 90 percent of all eyecare services in Nepal. Of the 2.2million Nepali people seeking eyecare consultations annually, 43%are potentially in need ofeyeglasses, according to theWorld Health Organization (WHO).They specifically target theprevention of blindness andimpaired vision due touncorrected refractive error –simply the need for an eye examand a pair of glasses. More than600 million people around theworld are blind or vision impairedbecause they do not have accessto the eye examination andglasses they need.

So now the nice Specky Wrenshave furnished me with newspecs that solve not only thereading but also the sunproblem. They darken in the sunand they get light again veryquickly when I go indoors.

My only problem now is that asI write this the rain is driving inoff the sea in the mostunpleasant manner, especially asit is June. Can you get specs withwindscreenwipers, I think youcan in joke shops, but The SpeckyWren is not a joke, it’s a very niceplace with excellent professionaladvice and a great range ofstylish frames at a variety ofprices to suit all budgets. Towards the end of the 19th century it offered seclusion and inspiration for many artists, writers and public figures, factors which influence both residents and visitors to this day.

The main attractions in the town are Kipling's Garden, RottingdeanWindmill, St. Margaret's Church with its beautiful stained glasswindows and some traditional old inns which were once frequentedby smugglers inthe area.

The beautifulvillage ofRottingdean, located justoutsideBrighton, canbe reached onBrighton &Hove BusesRoute 2,Coaster 12sand Route 27. Ihave recently been to Studio Hardie and met with William (the guywith a hat, who was on George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces). As soon asyou walk into the workshop, you feel that you are entering into a veryspecial place.

These people are basically taking a tree and are turning it intosomething wondrous. It is a skill that I think should be widely revered andpaid handsomely for but I’m not sure that this is always the case. Whenconsidering advances in science and technology I believe that we have tokeep sight of these traditional crafts and not let them becomeinsignificant. They need to co-exist side-by side with advances intechnology. As well as having beautiful constructed items from wood, wealso need to be thinking about designing the next generation of buildingmaterials.

Well that’s another swatheof fabulous Brighton andHove Food & DrinkFestival successfully

completed, despite me being laidlow with a bad back. Sadly I wasunable to attend many of thewonderful events created by MrNick Mosley and the festival team, but those I did manage to make it towere magical.

The final weekend of course sawme on stage at Hove lawns hostingthe Live Food Stage with the verybest chefs from in and aroundBrighton and Hove as well as guestsfrom Guernsey and The Hague. Ouractivity with the International ChefExchange project has made usmany friends and it was a delight tosee them back here to participate inour festival. Both Tony Leck and BasOonk took the stage and cooked upa storm.

Make Your Case was the usualwild and ribald wine tasting fun,and once again we managed toraise a substantial sum forRockinghorse who support theRoyal Alexander Children’s Hospital.

But my best night out had to bethe Three Chefs Go To The Moviesdinner, hosted by chef KanthiThamma and Euan Sey at the CurryLeaf Cafe. Mr Mosley and I, after afew drinks, thought that it would befun to ask the chefs to theme theirdishes around their favourite films. It proved to be a fun idea thatinspired some truly wonderful food.

The first course fell to SemoneBonner, now of The Set. His choiceof film was Jaws and his complexdish of pressed skate in a seafoodbroth with a chicken croquette andseaweeds was delivered to thetables through a mist of fog and tothe scary theme from the movie. It

was fun and it was delicious too.The main course fell to Kanthi

Thamma of the Curry Leaf Cafe andthere was no surprise that his choicewas his favourite Bollywoodblockbuster. His team leapt from thekitchens and rushed around thetables streaking the diners withvibrant coloured powders in Holistyle before delivering equallyvibrant thalis. Kanthi’s food isstunning and on each visit I discovernew delights and dishes that I havenever, in over 40 years of eatingIndian food, tasted or even heard of.Later that week I took Bas Oonk totheir new venture, a kitchen basedin the Temple Bar on Western Road

pearls of dry ice that sent up curls ofmist.

If all of that was not enough, localburlesque queen Cherry Shakewell, dressed in 1920s showgirl glamour, complete with white ostrich featherfans, strutted her stuff amongst thediners and capped what was a quiteextraordinary evening in the mostflamboyant style.

In amongst the fun and glamourwe also managed to raise a decentsum of money for the orphanage inIndia for children with HIV thatKhanthi and his team aresupporting. Brighton and Hove Food& Drink Festival is and remains thelocal food festival, is a CIC and has a

policy of creating great community, open access events throughout itsprogramming. The Set, within Artist Residence, 33Regency square, Brighton. where we enjoyed a great selectionof street foods and a few beers too.

As usual I digress, Kanthi’sexplosion of colour was followed bya thing of great beauty from chefJimmy Grey of Jeremy’s at BordeHill. Jimmy chose The Great Gatsbyand in responce created aspectacularly opulent dish that hadthe room spellbound. A plate thatboasted strawberry and Ridgeviewsparkling wine jelly, freshstrawberries, dried strawberries, smoked strawberries (yes smoked),herbs, a chocolate truffle roll dustedin strawberry powder and fleckedwith gold leaf and finally a small jugof strawberry cocktail which oncontact with the plate hit secret

Brighton’s Dukeof York’scinema laysclaim to being

the oldest Britishcinema in continuoususe and is todayknown for showingfilms that are a little‘out there’- the kind ofthing we wouldn’t beable to see anywhereelse in the city.

One recent showing was of Ana Lily Amirpour’s debut, A Girl WalksHome Alone At Night- the first Iranian, Vampire Western ever made!Obviously this is not a genre that looks to be brimming over with filmsany time soon but the film is a joyful mash-up. Full of stylised fragmentsthat are prioritised over story and characters the film fails to compose abigger picture but in its own way creates something far more beautifulinstead.

Set in the fictional Iranian ghost town of Bad City (the name noddingtowards Frank Miller’s graphic novel Sin City) and shot in crisp black-and-white, the film’s look exists in a twilight zone. Whilst it nods to the late19th century’s ghost stories and early cinema, the film’s look also owesmuch to comic books and contemporary pop iconography. Iranian-American writer-director Amirpour describes the exhilarating film as the‘Iranian love-child of Sergio Leone and David Lynch, with Nosferatu as ababysitter’.

You’ll note I have yet to mention the plot… largely because there isn’tone! A young man, handsome and well coiffed but a bit of a cad, isworking hard to pay off hisvintage convertible. Yet hisfather is a heroin addictwith more debts than lovefor his son and the car istaken by a tattooed, drug-dealing pimp as collateral. Our hero is then placed atthe scene of a murder but, with the authoritiesnotable only for theirabsence, it is the lawless hetruly has to fear.

This out of control townneeds a saviour; thestranger with a murky pastwho wanders in and savesthe day as in every Westernbefore. What is unexpectedis that this liberating angelshould be a skateboarding, alienated, chador-wearingteenage girl! And possiblynot entirely alive. Thecharacter shapeshifts asthe film mutates around her, gleefully transforming to bask in the sheerpleasure of pulp.

With influences spanning spaghetti westerns, graphic novels, horrorfilms and the Iranian New Wave, the film creates a complex, interwovenweb of genre, archetype and iconography that at once seems alsoeffortless. A subversive intelligence brings together oxymoronic elementsthat bridge between cinema’s history and its modern incarnation, withonly a few strays into the tiresomely meta.

The film is at once a political parable and a lurid legend - either way, it’ssensational!

One of Britain’s best-lovedcomedians, MichaelPalin, comes toEastbourne’s Congress

Theatre on Saturday 3 October aspart of his one-man stage showThe Thirty Years Tour, celebrating30 years covered by his eventfuldiaries.

During the course of his two-hour show, Michael brings to lifethirty extraordinary years, from theend of the 1960s when his firstchild, and a new series calledMonty Python’s Flying Circus, tooktheir first faltering steps, to theend of the 1990s when Python hadbecome the most influentialcomedy team in the world andMichael a hugely successfultelevision traveller.

The diverse directions of hiscareer will be illustrated by a richand often rarely seen archive offilm, video, photos and recordings. As forthright about failure as he isbaffled by success, Michael sharesthe often hilarious, always honestand occasionally downrightembarrassing experiences of a lifethat can't resist a challenge.

Michael hopes that The ThirtyYears Tour will focus attention onthe importance of keeping diaries, and encourage people to do as hedid, and start to keep an accountof their daily life.

“The attraction of a diary is thatit remains in its own time. Itreflects only what happened onthat particular day. It doesn’tflatter and it isn’t distorted bywhat happened later. In that wayit’s the most truthful record of reallife. And it's your own life andnobody else's…” says Michael, who was made a CBE in 2000 and

was awarded the BAFTAFellowship in 2013.

The former Australian Idolcontender has beencarving out her own, leftfield indie-pop career

since early fame beckoned.Do you consider yourself anAussie or Brit-Aussie!? Goodquestion! I love Australia, I'mproud to be from here, but I'vetravelled so much in the last 10years that I really do just havelove for lots of different citiesand people. Global child! How do you now view theAustralian Idol experience?Idol is really one of those thingsin my life that always makes mechuckle as I was 16 at the time,so I feel quite different now! I'm25 now and I guess I was reallylucky that my writing shonethrough in what I released afterthat. I was able to forge my ownpath despite everyone wantingto label me with 'Idol'. I felt fora really long time that I had toprove myself. But I really don'tgive a shit anymore. The mainthing I think and care about inlife is how to push into theunknown. It's hard to be honestand write about what turns youon, what scares you, what youdon't want to look at, andbecause that is so hard to do itis valuable to people. Wah Ha is a great title for asong! Tell me about that. WahHa is just one of those words

that my mouth just made and itfelt good so I didn't argue with it.It's more of a feeling, rather than aliteral meaning. To me, it says: ' Idon't care/whatever/this is howmany fucks I give' type of thing.Haha! Tell me about your new albumThe new album is… I'm laughingbecause it's still in various stagesof completion..! Maybe if youcrossed 'Teardrop' by MassiveAttack with a huge pop song like,'All That' by Carly Rae Jepson, andthen tinted that with a bit of darkelectric folk like PJ Harvey, you'dget close… Yeh? Clear as mud? Do you get to play the UK often?Still have family here? So excitedto be back, and yes I have family inScotland, I'll be heading up to theWest Coast to see my Gran andthen we play three shows inScotland. We'll be playing Brightonwhich will be great; my Mum andDad lived in Steyning for a while soit's a bit of a special place for ourfamily as well.I imagine the venues will beconsiderably smaller here...What chu tryin' to say?! Haha, nahit's true, it's been a while since I'veplayed in the UK & Europe - it willbe super cool to be playing thesesmaller venues, makes for a pretty'real' experience for us and theaudience! A good way to getacquainted again!Komedia, Mon 15 July, 7.30pm, £11

MUSIC

Just because the sun is out andthe beach is beckoning, itdoesn’t mean that making themost of the summer should

mean missing out on some fabulouscomedy club nights around town.

The weekend erupts on a regularbasis over at Komedia, with Kraterkicking off at 8pm on Friday,Saturday and Sunday, pitching up asthe perfect place to relay that holidayfeeling from the sun, sea and stonesthat occupy the daytime. Thisweekend sees Marcel Lucont headlineproceedings, aka Alexis Dubus’ Gallicalter-ego, bringing pomposity, arrogance and a swarthy je ne saisquoi from across The Channel. Youcould be on holiday already.

On Sunday, after spending the day sunning outside our testament tojolly royal weekends away, step inside the Brighton Dome complex itselfand keep the good mood going with Katherine Ryan’s touring show,‘Glam Role Model’. Regularly seen all over our TV screens, with herbitingly funny wit and observations, it’s good to sail close to the windwith this comedic talent from Canada. Frequently saying the things thathave brought her publicised death threats and a killer comedy career, theCorn Exchange should be packed come night-time.

And if you’re in the centre of town on Friday night, starting yourweekend off with a bang and a pint, rushing to see the waves after aweek’s work, then simply pootle on up to the Quadrant pub at 8pm to seethe first in a series of Edinburgh previews from award-winning sketchgroup Casual Violence’s founder James Hamilton. Playing every fortnightthroughout June and July, and joined each time by another sketchcomic’s preview, these are works in progress but from minds that havebeen working in comedy for years. This opening night of the fitful of the‘James Hamilton Is So Lonely’ run sees Hamilton joined by themarvellously funny Anna Morris. It’s also free.

So sun and smile and roar with laughter this Summer. It’s that easy.www.komedia.co.uk/brightonbrightondome.orgwww.facebook.com/events/1645328005689264/

SIMONE SAYSBlack Is The Color Of My Voice, The Old Market, 28 May2015★★★★★ Joe Fuller

Apphia Campbell bothwrote and starred in thisbrilliant one-woman show, playing and singing Nina

Simone in a breathlessly moving, funny and human manner. Asidefrom having a superb, soulfulvoice (surely a prerequisite whenemulating one of music’s mostmemorable), Campbell exudedreal charisma and charm too, commanding the stagestaggeringly well. She also nailedthe more emotional moments, such as recounting herexperiences with an abusivehusband, gripping the audiencewhile avoiding any cloying hint ofmelodrama. The performanceelicited a standing ovation fromthe sold-out crowd, but justmisses out on five stars here dueto a slightly underwhelmingfinale. Campbell might have aclassic in the making however, with a little narrative polishing. The Old Market, 28 May 2015★★★★★ Joe Fuller

Sh*t-faced ShakespeareA real gem, yet again, bringingShakespeare to the masses withthe heady scent of beer andsawdust from the Tudors, alongwith a classically trainedchutzpah.

The premise is known by now –a small talented cast perform aplay from the Bard’s canon in anhour with one of their numberconsiderably inebriated from theoff. This was bawdy, risky, exhilarating and utterly magical. The sense of the ridiculous washeightened, the peril was true, love was lost and won – theconceit of the drunken player

worked delightfully but balancedbeautifully as the plot of the playitself held the absolute spine ofthe show.

Many try to bring access toShakespeare by making itcontemporary. This took us backto the fabulous mayhem of thebear pit and won more devotion tothe folios with it.The Warren: Main House, 22 May2015★★★★★ Victoria Nangle

My Friend LesterFramed by Billie Holiday’s famousexclamation at Lester Young’sfuneral (unrepeatable here!), thisperformance sought to explainthe confusing, elusive andtumultuous relationship between

jazz performers Billie Holiday andLester Young. The narrativeillustrated how two immenselytroubled people with alcohol andnarcotics problems found solacein the company and quirkiness ofeach other.

Dahlberg’s Lester captured theirpain and the depth of feelingbeautifully with a melancholywarmth. His saxophoneperformance was confident andsoulful throughout. McAteer’svoice delicately demanded theuse of vibrato which showed thepain she was portraying;particularly during the famous‘Strange Fruit’. She was able toeffortlessly slip between breathy

deep singing and alight, clean as glasstone. Possibly theperformance couldhave been improved byfewer breaks in the setfor the narrative as itsometimes felt as if themusic spoke enough foritself. The Rialto Theatre, 31May 2015★★★★★ DaisyTompkins

The Diary of OneWho DisappearedA selection of Brahms’German folksongs was alight opener, withmezzo-soprano AnnaHuntley using a littletoo much vibrato forthis reviewer’s taste.James Baileu’s sensitivepiano backing was asassured and evocative

as always however. Britten’s SevenSonnets of Michelangelo featuredsome beautiful singing from tenorRobert Murray, alternating fromsoothing to soaring to devastatingeffect. Janáček’s ‘The Diary of OneWho Disappeared’ is a dramatictale of forbidden love that wasmovingly conveyed by everyoneinvolved, including a nice touch ofthree haunting offstage voicescreating an otherworldly feel inthe church. The finale hadeverything: pounding, bracingpiano playing and gutsy, loudsinging from Murray. A niceperformance that never trulytranscended, but was movingnevertheless.St George’s Church, 21 May 2015★★★★★ Joe Fuller
