F or those of you who followme on Twitter you willhave noticed that my

tweets are somewhatinfrequent and myresponses to other’stweets even lessfrequent. It’s not alack of interest but alack of skill. Quitefrankly I’m just notvery good at it.

I do however like touse my full allocationof characters as oftenas I can, so when I dotweet I waste rather a lot oftime honing them to a perfect140 character count. Notalways I admit, I sometimessimply name a venue, a drink or a dish that I am enjoying andadd the location. You could seeTwitter as a foodie electronictag, marking my path ofindulgence.

I’m much better at Facebook.I love playing word games withfriends and family all over theworld. I like to chat to my nephews in Wales and it really has been afantastic way of getting in touch with lost friends everywhere.

What I don’t like though is using Facebook for business purposes. I ’m very annoyed with the Arabic language. I’ve spent the past four monthslearning to write beautiful Arabic (albeit probably looking as if it’s been writtenby a five year old) with all the correct dots, dashes and squiggles in the right

places, which is no mean feat, I can tell you. However, even going over to Dubai onthe plane and reading the menu I was pretty annoyed to realise that they don’tuse the vowels I’ve spent so long scribbling away at. At the airport, the hotel and inthe street, there are signs and sentences all over the place and all without vowels,which is very confusing and a huge handicap to a fledgling Arabic speaker like me.To give you an idea: ‘swmmng pl ths wy’ or ‘brkfst srvd btwn 6 nd 11’ is how mostthings are written.

Unfortunately, this sudden andunexpected lack of vowels did notin any way dissuade me fromknocking back several pints ofBelgian beer in the Belgian BeerBar, with my friends who live inDubai. Belgian beer and I have hada stormy relationship in the pastand even though I’ve spent manymornings-after remonstrating withmyself in Jeremy Kyle fashion,telling myself that I’m going to break up with Belgian Beer and never ever see itagain. I seem unable to resist its tawny glow when it’s sitting there, blonde andhandsome on a bar top before me, even though I know that it’s going to break meagain. The fact that Belgian Beer was inter-dispersed with an equally debilitatingquantity of Jagermeister shots, rendered me even incapable of self-remonstrationthe following morning. Fortunately, the following morning was my sightseeing day,although the only sight I saw before 5pm was the ceiling of my hotel room; (that iswhen it stopped spinning for long enough for me to open my eyes). At least I didn’tspend any money!

The morning after that would have been a much worse day to have a hangoveras I had an early morning flight to the Maldives. When I reached the boarding gate,feeling bright eyed and bushy-tailed due to my previous day staring at the ceiling,I realised that I’d been upgraded to business, which would have been completelywasted on someone who was, well, completely wasted.

I sat next to a very nice Russian chap on the plane, who was a terrible influenceand we made vast inroads into the complimentary Moet and Pouilly Fuisse, whichmade four hours pass in what seemed like half an hour. As I staggered off theplane, I couldn’t help feeling rather relieved that Male – the Island upon which Iwas staying – was totally alcohol free. Later that evening however, once I realisedhow noisy my hotel room was, I was wishing for Belgian beer to come and knockme out again.

The Landlady and the case of the missing vowels

B ill Dunster isperhaps best knownas the architect

behind Beddington ZeroEnergy Development –“BedZED” – in Hackbridgethat was completed in2002. As much as I waspleased to escape myhome town of Croydon in1998, I certainly wouldhave been fascinated tosee that scheme beingbuilt if I had stayed.

In conjunction with developer Colin Brace andarchitect Alan Phillips, Dunster has beenworking on an equally exciting scheme to bringhardcore eco construction to Hove. After a well-publicised and long-running planning battle,“PortZED” was refused permission earlier thismonth. The proposal consisted of a series of sixblocks of five-storeys on Kingsway (morestoreys if measured from Basin Road North inShoreham Port below).

Aesthetically, I do rather like PortZEDbut I do take the point that it is far toodomineering in its current state. Worriesabout height and bulk can at least now betackled by Colin and his team. As aDunster scheme, it is no surprise thatthere are eco features aplenty. Mostinterestingly of these are the sets ofhelical wind turbines that are mountedbetween the buildings. The turbines cantake full advantage of the city’s south-westerly wind due to the orientation ofthe blocks. Each faces the south-west in the way that a plane’s wing cutsthrough the skies ahead.

During the planning process, I have been somewhat fixated by what isgoing on between the proposed blocks; not so much because I am taken bythe turbines, but more because I am adamant that views must be preserved.In this case, turning the buildings to the south-west reduces the preciousviews from Kingsway.

If I had to make a choice, I would pick a tall scheme with gaps over a lowterraced scheme. After all, the low buildings to the east of the site offer noviews whatsoever. As such, I will be campaigning for more to be made of thegaps between the blocks, which would involve removing clutter, but also forgaps to be left at either end of the site.

All things considered, I think it was correct of Brighton & Hove City Council toreject this application as it has some way to go before it is a development ofwhich everybody – particularly those living nearby – can be proud. T he Tip, The Trellis And The Carwash. It doesn’t exactly have the samering as The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe, but in The Boy’s eyes,it’s as much of an adventure. He unexpectedly volunteered to come

on this exciting journey. The tip, (except when I almost got skewered bysomeone else’s Christmas tree – we’re in March!), was uneventful. The Boywas finding it an unexpected treat, however, sitting on a booster seat inthe front. Allowing kids to sit in different places often works. Meanwhile Ilift bags of soil into a skip. We’re all having fun.

Excitement mounts at the garden centre. The Boy gets to ask me tochoose my favourite water feature, without being interrupted byYoungest™. To transport the trellis, it’s necessary to rearrange the carseats again. This adventure just gets better and better.

The climactic scene is the car wash. Not only does he get to enjoy the carwash, there’s trellis inside the car which adds to the sense of peril, plus hegets to hold the little ticket with the code on it. Normally this is somethingto fight over with his brother as if it’s the ring in one of those Tolkien books.

Sticking to my book theme, two days later, in the style of Harry Potter, itwas Richard Hearn And The Search For Bricks. The bricks were to replace afew in our garden wall that had come loose. By ‘come loose’ I mean ‘fallenoff’. Anyway, this time my dad was the co-protagonist, knowing moreabout bricklaying than I do (or to put it another way, in the land of theblind, the one-eyed man is king).

LBC Sandface is not an underground DJ, but the name of the brick, as wefound out at the first builder‘s merchants. They did have its nearest cousin,A Brick Called Heather (a provisional name for my romantic novel, as yetunpublished). While my Dad drove around the East/West Sussex border inour six brick quest, I sat in the passenger seat, cleverly using the interneton my phone to contact various places about their brick stock. Our questtook us to Worthing, and when a different builder’s merchant steered ustowards Heather, I could both nod and then shake my head authoritatively.The nod in recognition toits similarity, the shakea demonstration of myunwillingness to settlefor second best. Recentlyacquired jargonconveyed with chutzpah isa powerfulcombination.

We got oursix LBCSandfacebricks. All wehad to do nowis to re-buildthe wall.Preferablystraight. Andthat, dearreaders, isanother story...

I love weekends. There's no pressure lollingabout in our pyjamas for half the day, norushing to school barking military orders

to get out of the door and up the hill. Sometimes after dropping my five

year old off at school, I just hatemyself. Why can’t I get her dressedand to school for 9am withoutgrowling? I just get so frustrated.‘She’s only five, she’s only five!’ Irepeat on loop through myhead. Occasionally I have totake myself into anotherroom to breathe deeply, or swear or scream, thenreturn to the battlefieldwith a calm patient voice.“Remove some key rings fromyour school bag as they weighmore than the books in the bag!” The bag is breakingunder the pressure.Foot stomping andcrying ensues. It’s7.45am. I'm tired, I stayed up lategoogling Einsteinquotes, avoidingkitten videos onFacebook andsearching eBay for things I will never buy like a retro Adidas track suit.

I’m tired, all I want is to have a nice chat, I don’t want the crying. The cryingmakes me so uptight. It pierces right into me, hurting more than any weapon.She doesn’t need to cry, I guess she just resorts to crying out of frustration – ofnot being allowed her own way or feeling not listened to. It must be horriblebeing five. Everyone likes their own way. So I give up, and sure her bag breaksup the hill. I can’t help as I’m carrying a heavy bin bag to the bins. I try thoughand I’m accused of causing further damage to bag! I want to scream. I’m doingmy best. I’m struggling with a bin bag trying not to cover myself in bin slop. Ineed to get to an industry expo in London after drop off. I’d rather not bestained and stink. Smelling was fine when I had a baby but she’s five now... I tellher to carry her broken, heaving bag herself then but she seems to not need myinput, she knows it all! Dealing with the consequences of her own decisionsresults in more tears.

I draw up some dormant patience and remembering she is just five, I lob thebin bag in the bin and kneel down, repairing her bag with cold, icy fingers thatare desperately wanting to be put back into gloves. She is crying whiny noisesat me the whole time. As if I’m a terrible person and evil. But I’m helping her. Idid implore her to not attach nine heavy toys to the school bag. I advised her,she ignored me. I implored, she ignored me. I gave up the battle. She got herway and now it’s my fault I let her! I want to stamp my feet. It’s hard being thegrown up. Is it the weekend yet? Can we just watch TV in pyjamas?

Notwithstanding that she hadnot succeeded, the audition wastelevised and subsequently postedon the Britain’s Got Talent’swebsite and on YouTube. Shecomplained to an EmploymentTribunal that the show had failedto make reasonable adjustmentsfor her in respect of the audition.

Q. I run a talent show in Brighton foraspiring comedians and encouragedisabled people to apply. Am I atany risk under the disabilitydiscrimination provisions of theEquality Act if I or those on thepanel turn down an applicant whois disabled?A. To some extent the answer to thisdepends upon whether the reasonfor the person’s failure to be putforward to the next round hasanything to do with their disability.

Q. It is possible that a personmight not perform well becausethey are badly affected on the day by their disability?A. There has been a recent caseinvolving the television showBritain’s Got Talent. The Claimant
