EDITORIAL“World class!” These were the words of Louie Walsh to Sam Bailey, as you read this issue of Club News you should now know who’s won The X Factor ............hopefully Sam. Sam doesn’t fail to please, she is note perfect with every song she sings, and as the judges repeatedly say, her vocal range is tremendous!! Well, looking back on 2013 .......where has it gone, I agree with Lisa, it’s flown by. We sadly lost Mr Les Burrows (South Wigston Cons) Mr K. Hunt (South Wigston WMC) Paul and Gail Cockayne (Braunstone District) Fife Sinclair (in Tenerife) and my family pet Mellie, all of whom will be missed by family and friends. Lots of fund raising for Diabetes UK, Childrens Heart Unit Glenfield, Children In Need, Macmillan Cancer, Breast Cancer, Animal Welfare, Mesothelioma to name a few! Write-ups from Steve Rushin, Lisa, Mick Welsh, Fred Ward and yes you can send a write-up in about your clubs entertainment or a show that you have seen elsewhere. Big shows in our clubs include Command Show at Blackpool, Coyote (EPR), The Frankie Valli Story, Take That Tribute (Enderby), Ultimate Madness (Eyres

So come on, keep supporting your club so that they can cont inue to put good shows on! Celebrations....me as Editor, 20 years last March! We have seen The Wigston Legion change its name to The Elms Social and Service Club. I nearly forgot Karen West & Paul celebrating their silver wedding anniversary at Birstall RBL. All in all a very mixed bag of goings on within our clubs. Lets hope a bright future for all our clubs in 2014!!! Now then Fur & Feather, a thing of the past?? Not that many clubs do them now and I think I know why......the cost!! If you do a line - 2 lines - full house - supper, it can cost a fortune compared to what you take in! So members be aware, if you don’t get Fur & Feathers or that the prizes change or the amount of games, clubs have to make some money to continue to exist; I know technically we are non-profit making clubs but we need to survive! I would like to wish everyone in Clubland a Happy New Year. Happy New Year to everyone reading this, hope it’s a good one and very prosperous for all clubs; keep supporting your club to ensure that there are n more closures. Going back to last year, local male/female duo Mallennia finished off the entertainment at the club in October with a fine performance of songs to suit all ages and tastes with good vocals and stage personalities. November began with the first appearance here for local six piece live band Nanna Radleys. Two female vocalists along with four excellent muso’s playing some great songs, pop, rock and soul material going down well with a few dancers at the end. A band who should enjoy a very prosperous future. Next up was the welcome return for Tipton female duo Helesa, unfortunately I had to miss them but was reliably informed that they gave us a good night once again and I was asked to book them back so I will do. A special night next with two top acts from Blackpool, on a welcome return visit comedienne Janice Yorke and Robert Young who is one of the best vocalists in the business. Robert started the night with a good strong set of superb songs with an exquisite vocal delivery getting everyone warmed up for Janice Yorke who had everyone in hysterics with her original and hilarious comedy. Along with the funny jokes, almost everyone got some lighthearted stick, non more so than myself, which was fine by me as it ensures she has the audience on her side. At the end they both did a singing set together perfectly proving to be a great duo as well as their individual skills. A brilliant night that everyone enjoyed. It should be an exciting year ahead for the club with some top class entertainment already booked in, both new and acts that have gone down well here in the past.
A NIGHT OUT WITH STEVEIn November we went to The Athena to see Leicester legends Showaddywaddy. Before I tell you about the show, a quick update, 2008 it was the start of a major change in the bands line-up. Long standing lead guitarist Danny Willson departed the band to join Martin Turners Wishbone Ash, who he’s still with. He was replaced by Paul Dixon who has played guitar for Karen West Band and Stone Park amongst others. Shortly after that, original members Trev Oakes and Al James both retired with the band bringing in sax player David Graham. At the end of 2011, original lead vocalist Dave Bartram also retired and he now manages the band. David Graham departed the band at this time too. Original members, drummer Romeo Challenger and bass player Rod Deas along with Paul are now joined by lead vocalist Andy Pelos who used to sing for Junction 21 and was also a member of Showadddywaddy off shoot band The Teddys with ex members Malc Allured, the late Bill Gask and Ray Martinez. Drummer and guitarist Rob Hewins who has played drums for Alvin Stardust and ironically Martin Turners Wishbone Ash and keyboard player Dean Loach who used to be in a band called Big And Something Silver. This was the first time I’ve seen this line-up and I must say I was very impressed bringing a new and exciting lease of life into the band. Andy has a strong powerful voice well suited to the Dave Bartram songs as he has a terrific vocal range getting to the high notes perfectly. Rob also has a great voice singing a few songs that Bill used to sing also playing guitar or drums depending on the song, a general all round talented guy and Dean has proven to be a good asset to the band replicating the sax and trumpet sounds on his keyboards. Paul is an excellent guitarist even playing his guitar at the back of his neck and Romeo and Rod are as good as ever. With all six members singing, the vocal harmonies are second to none with a lot of intense rehearsals obviously being fruitful. They played two one hour sets with all of the big hits such as Hey Rock ’n’ Roll, Under The Moon Of Love, You Got What It Takes, Three Steps To Heaven, Dancin’ Party, When, Pretty Little Angel Eyes and I Wonder Why. They also played some lesser known hits like Multiplication, A Night At Daddy Gees, Blue Moon and Sweet Little Rock ‘N’ Roller along with some cover versions of songs like Rock This Town, Johnny Remember Me, Bobaloo, Sea Cruise, Summertime Blues, Chain Gang, Barefootin’, Move It and C’mon Everybody. A great night out with a great show to watch and if you get a chance to see them, they come with my full recommendation. I’m sure this line up can get really established keeping the band busy and popular for years to come. See ya next month ........ Steve Rushin
