EDITORIALI hear another club wants to drop out of the Leicester Ent. Secs. Council, question; what do we get out of being in it? I’ll tell you! You get first hand information on acts that let clubs down, you see up and coming new acts you can book direct at normally a lower ‘first time in’ price, hear and find out what other clubs are doing to get members etc. in! There is always something new happening in Clubland and we are part of Councils in other areas so we can interact with them as well; we see acts from other areas because again, I hear in some clubs ‘oh, not them again’!! so it helps in so many other ways to be in our Council, after all we need to stick together and help one another through the rough times in running our clubs. Congratulations to the ‘Foxes’ winning the league and gaining promotion to the premiership, also to Mark Selby the Jester from Leicester, winning by beating Ronnie in the final of the world snooker in Sheffield. Leicester is well and truly on the map! Well done guys!

Is everyone in Clubland ready for the World Cup Football, I know we are, a brand new TV for our members/affiliated members to watch in their own environment, let’s hope we get the support we deserve!! Blackpool’s come and gone, see separate write-ups from Steve and me. Great to see so many new and old friends, and boy, what a turn around at The Bridge public house a n d g r e a t b e e r p r i c e s £ 1 . 9 0 J.Smiths/Fosters £2 Strongbow!! and yet again Leicestershire born karaoke on the Sunday 3pm - 11pm. Helen Ward ‘DJ Laidee H’. Helen is a karaoke in a million, nothing too much trouble and she carries such a fantastic amount of music. A young lady who brings the best out in everyone who sings! I told the landlord he has a gem and needs to hold on to her, she could work anywhere!! Well done Helen see you next year! The Conference itself went quite well tidying up a few rules etc., although the delegates still want a General Secretary and not an office manager! Moving on we have two clubs coming back into our meetings/shopwindows, Leicester Railwaymens and Braunstone & District (27th July and 28th September), it’s encouraging for the Ent. Secs. Council, lets hope we can get more support from acts, Ent. Secs. and you the public at the shopwindows! Entertainment secretaries at Thurmaston PWMC, of which we thank the host club for the buffet etc., included, Melton RBL, Lutterworth, Latimer, Pool, The Elms, B rauns tone Vic to r ia , S i l eby and Thurmaston PWMC. All July material to be with me by June 7th please, to D. L. Rollason, 25 Amyson Road, Leicester LE5 2EB, phone 0116 2410011 or email [email protected]

THE ELMS SOCIAL AND SERVICE CLUBThe entertainment at the club to end March saw the first appearance for Yorkshire comedy duo The Sharp Experience. I saw this very funny show firstly at The Blackpool Command Show a few years ago going down a bomb as they did a couple of other times I saw them in Leicester, so it was very surprising and disappointing that they didn’t go down very well at our club as I was confident that they would when I booked them It’s certainly no reflection on the act, it was just one of those nights, it happens everywhere, thankfully not too often, and there was nothing more they could have done to get the crowd going, I personally thought that they were as good as ever and on another night they’d have been ok. April began with the welcome return for male/female duo Velvet Souls. I was away on this night but was reliably informed on my return that they, like they always do, gave us a good night going down well in the process. Following them was the first proper show here for local vocalist Lesley following her successful appearance on a Charity Night last year. Right from the opening song, the full concert room loved her to bits with a great atmosphere in the room, and by the end of the night a full dance floor. She has a tremendous singing voice and a lot of friendly humourous banter which the audience took to all night. She will be back at the end of the year I’m pleased to say and if we were still doing the Best Of Leicester, I’m sure she’d be up for a few awards. Appearing on the same Charity Show as Lesley were four piece band The Munix and they were on next. They reformed last year with original members Paul and Neil being joined by lead guitarist John and drummer Rob and they are as good as ever and great to see back. They play a mixture of old Munix favourites and some newer material sticking to their template of playing great well known songs that nobody else hardly does, songs by the likes of The Tremeloes, The Fortunes, The Searchers, Duran Duran, Smokie, Badfinger and John Fogarty were a pleasure and nice change to hear with three excellent lead vocals and three part harmonies make them remain the classic Munix sound. They will always be welcomed back. It was nice to see a few of their followers who I hadn’t seen for a few years including Martin Harvey looking fit and well. Short and sweet this month, see ya next month..... Steve Rushin (Ent Sec)

Dear Editor,My name is Richard Chamberlain and it is my sad duty to report the sudden death of my father, Mick Chamberlain, formerly of Axis Duo.Aged 60, Mick had been part of the Leicester club scene for over 40 years, playing guitar with bands such as Black Diamond, Voyage and Iced Gold. In the last 20 years, he has been part of a popular duo, Axis, who were well known on the club circuit. In addition Mick was the organiser of all the bands he has been in and had regular contact with most, if not all, of the club Ent. Secs. over the years.Having worked with him with Axis for the last seven years, I know he has many friends and acquaintances amongst your readership and I wondered if you could mention his passing in the forthcoming club news. I don't know if you knew Mick personally, my apologies if this is a shock to you. Kind Regards, Richard Chamberlain

BLACKPOOL COMMAND SHOWFirst of all may I say it was great not to be sat next to a table of noisy people this year, Alan kindly moved us and others had the pleasure?! Where we sat was lovely, people around us watching and respecting the fabulous acts that were on stage. Thanks to Alan, Colleen and the Blackpool and District Concert Secretaries Federation for their invite once again. The first act on stage was Detroit; Lee, Terry and Nigel take you on a journey into the magical era of Soul & Motown, hits from the likes of The Temptations, Jackie Wilson, Four Tops, Drifters and many, many more, together with great dance routines - a good opener for the show. Then we saw female vocalist Sam Lyons, I have seen Sam before in a duo called 2 Lyons working in and around the Yorkshire club circuit, Sam has been singing since her teenage years, then in early 2000 she formed the duo before returning solo in 2007. A very small young lady, but wow a huge voice that could entertain anywhere from clubs to cruise ships, an excellent act. Sheldon Bonner, male vocalist, was next up, having supported the Rocking Berries, Billy Pearce and others, Sheldon has only been on stage sine 2003 but with his immaculate dress and delivery you would think he’s been around quite a while. He’s been on X-Factor and even reached the final of the Northern Star Trail! He did a brilliant Gene Pitney number I’m Gonna Be Strong, if you shut your eyes you would have thought it was the man himself. Well done Sheldon. Comedy next with Terry Cotta, a guy I’ve worked before! I know he’s one of Steve Rushin’s favourite comedians. With over 20years in the business, I’ve seen Terry many, many times up and down the land. One of Terry’s claims to fame is entertaining at St James’ Palace by appointment of the Duke & Duchess of Gloucester, a very gifted and talented funny man, well respected by other comedians, and off stage a great guy to talk to! Closing the first half was m/f duo Fireworx. AJ and Sam worked for me years ago at the Spinney Hill, and they are still as good today as they were then. A great short spot. The second half of the show saw John Fitzpatrick, John was on the 2010 Command Show before, and it was plain to see why he was invited back this year. John is another act that is widely respected by other acts, clubs, etc., a vocalist with a rich strong voice, who sings from the 50's to present day! John has won a few talent competitions over the years and has also worked for the Thomas Cook Holiday Company! He also does a great Matt Monroe tribute! K.T. Star, female vocalist, next, and boy oh boy! can this young lady sing. She would not look out of place in musicals in London, a sensational voice many would die for!!! From the first song you just melt into listening to her every song! Songs from the likes of Shirley Bassey, Adele, Streisand, Winehouse, Katy Perry, Four Tops; from musicals like Cats, Evita, Sunset Boulevard etc. etc. She also does a tribute act ..... Adele. A young lady who is full of compassion in what she sings. The top of the bill The Rag Dolls introducing themselves ‘from over the pond’? it became certain they weren’t, but nevertheless what a fantastic set of lads as Steve says in his writeup, shut your eyes and go back in time! They were unbelievable, and from what I can gather they haven’t been together that long, although with their slick and precise performance you would think they were originals, one of the guys used to sing with our very own Phil Voss in a boy band a few years ago!! They have a huge future in front of them!!! The Show was again held together superbly by compere Carl Schofield who himself did his usual comedy spot with his rap! A must, must for anyone to see! Just amazing again Carl. Can’t wait to see you in Leicester in December (more on this in the future) Thanks again to Alan and Brian for putting together another superb show. Dave Rollason, Leicestershire Club News EditorP.S. Same seats next year please Alan!!

BLACKPOOL COMMAND SHOWIn April six of us enjoyed a great weekend in Blackpool and on the first night we were there we went to the 65th Command Show once again held at the fabulous venue The Horseshoe. These shows always feature a superb cross section of entertainment to suit everyone and this year was no exception. As always it was organised by Alan Pilborough and produced by Brian Clifts, a perfect team putting so much work into making it a well run show once again. The show was compered by one of Blackpool’s most popular comedians Carl Schofield who has the expertise of keeping the show flowing while treating us all to his very clever comedy. He introduced the first act to get the show off and running, a terrific male trio Detroit who, as the name suggests, sing a lot of Soul & Motown songs with all three singing lead vocals and they harmonise perfectly and with great dance routines. A good act but there are so many like them these days it will be hard for them to break through, but I’m sure they’ll never be short of work. A vocalist with a belting voice, little Sam Lyons was on next and she can sing all sorts suitable to clubs, theatres or a cruise ship, very good looking and stylish too. Next up was one of the best of the night, male vocalist Sheldon Bonner who has a lot of experience and it clearly showed with a fantastic delivery with everybody enjoying his powerful singing voice going down a bomb in return. Like the last few years, most of the acts seem to hail from Yorkshire but the next act is from Lancashire, Bolton to be exact, one of the funniest comedians in the business Terry Cotta who had the crowd in stitches with his hilarious observational original comedy. For me the best act on the show and will be appearing twice a week at The Viking, Blackpool in the summer season plus a couple of clubs too. Closing the first half were a good male/female duo called Fireworx who, despite being very entertaining with pleasant personalities I don’t think they’ll progress further than the club circuit but have been around a long time always busy which is a result in itself. The second half commenced with a set from Carl, cheering the audience up with his jokes and songs before introducing a singer with a difference, John Fitzpatrick who sang a good variety of material before launching into Sex On Fire leaping all over the stage like Norman Wisdom, absolutely unbelievably eye-catching. A really good act that took everyone by surprise. A terrific singer K.T. Star shone through with her glowing presentation and songs from the 60's to today’s charts plus some from the musicals, she should enjoy an exciting future. The show ended on a big high with Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons Tribute The Ragdolls. Four very professional young guys who all sing lead vocals and in the 20 minutes allotted time they managed to pack in songs like Sherry, Walk Like A Man, Can’t Take My Eyes Off You, Who Loves You, December ‘63 and of course Ragdoll. If you shut your eyes, you would have thought it was the real thing as their wide vocal ranges and harmonies were so close to the original sounds. Big things are already on the horizon for these guys as they are appearing at the North Pier Theatre during the summer and are also at The Sands venue in Blackpool later in the year. They deserve everything that comes to them! Just past midnight and yet another first class show had zoomed by and was all over. These shows are great and I’m already looking forward to next years. The rest of the weekend saw us go to The Viking to see comedian Carl Schofield, vocalist Lee Brady, compere Buddy Lee and The Sensation Dancers. Val and I enjoyed a great singer called Robbie Allen at The H & A Club, comedian Kurtis King at The Philharmonic Club plus a couple of good singers at Ma Kelly’s. Thanks to Dave, Sara, Mick and Tess. Lionel and Sara for the accommodation and as I said, I can’t wait til next year. Steve Rushin
