EDITORIALWow!!!! What do you think to the new look

....colour!! We hope to have more in the

future. Clubs that haven’t got it yet can,

just ring me or drop me an e-mail. I have

spoken to most of you and await your

instructions as to whether you wish to

have colour or not. Well, the World Cup is over, glad the Cup

came over to a European club, and that it

didn’t stay in Brazil (no offence to any

Brazilian readers!) World Cup over,

premiership etc., starts this month, my

predictions will appear next month,

Steve’s are in this months issue! We have a few write-ups this month, nice

to see one or two taking time to write in,

we could still do with others so get the

quills out (pens!) There are some great shows coming up in

our clubs, to name a few Coast,

Yorkshire’s premier pop/rock band on 6th

September and Legends Of Rock on

27th, both at Thurmaston PWMC, Take

That Tribute and Michael Buble a great

double bill on the 22nd August at

Braunstone Victoria Club, in contrast the

same night but at Eyres Monsell club they

also have a great double bill with a Sports

Presentation/comedy night starring

Chubby Brown tribute Kris Kenny, and

Claire Mac; and our very own Heatwaves

appearing at Oadby RBL on 9th August

and Enderby on 23rd August, this is just

the tip of the iceberg of the fantastic

entertainment on in our clubs over the

next few weeks or so. Again, go along and

support these class acts in our struggling

clubs!!! Talking of support, and yes I know some

people are on holidays, but where are the

entertainment secretaries/artists and

most important YOU the public, not many

turning out for meetings and showcases.

Not so long back concert rooms would

have quite a lot in, but not so of late. Come

THE ELMS SOCIAL AND EX-SERVICE CLUBEx Kipper guitarists Danny and Rick Willson’s father Colin sadly recently passed away having suffered a stroke, I knew Colin for about 30 years: he was a great man and his total loyalty and encouragement to his sons made them still to this day, two of the best musicians in Leicester. He was a regular at the Notts Oddfellows WMC on a Friday night and when I went there I always sat down and had a pint with him, he has now rejoined his wife June.The entertainment to end May on a high note was the fabulous vocalist from Sheffield Cherry Pink. She is one half of the Divas Through The Decades and she is equally magical on her own. A wide variety of material to suit all ages and tastes was warmly received from the appreciative audience. June began with one of the best guitar vocalists I’ve ever seen. Steve Thompson from Nottingham was absolutely superb. For the last 13 years Steve has been playing guitar with Gerry and The Pacemakers and his professionalism shone through with excellent deliveries of songs by the likes of The Tremeloes, PJ Proby, Queen, The Drifters and of course Gerry and The Pacemakers with some additional info on some of the artists he was covering, it made it an interesting and enthralling night. He went down really well and will be welcomed back again. The monthly paid show was brilliant with local female trio The Heatwaves: in the short time they’ve been together they’ve worked really hard into making it a first class presentation with a slick, fast moving, entertaining spectacle. It is primarily a Motown Show with a few soul classics thrown in with all three singing lead vocals and harmonising perfectly in unison, songs such as Stop In The Name Of Love, Needle In A Haystack, Third Finger Left Hand, The Happening and Band Of Gold came out of the speakers with everyone singing along and a full dance floor. Next up was the welcome return to the club for local trio The Cheeze. These three lads never fail to have a good night here with songs from all eras including songs by Queen, Dire Straits, The Beatles, Roy Orbison and Redbone. They are three of the best musicians in Leicester and they clearly enjoy themselves on stage which fired off the audience who stayed all night and there were a lot of dancers at the end. Great night! Following them were the welcome return for local male duo Soul Providers, Chris and Hue never fail to deliver a tremendous show with some excellent Soul & Motown. Hue was appearing despite having a night off from The Foundations tour with Jackie Graham and Geno Washington and both sang really well going down a bomb as always. I’ll finish this month with my football predictions for the season as it’s that time of year again, Premier League - Man Utd, Championship - Wigan, League One - Sheffield Utd, League Two - Southend. Letter to The EditorDear Editor, I wish to reply to the article from Ray (Ent. Sec. at Thurmaston PWMC) in the June issue.Being a keen karaoke singer I used to thoroughly enjoy the karaokes at the above club: a good, cordial and usually friendly crowd would be entertained. There is stiff competition from other karaokes but quality usually prevails!Nothing compares to live music, but I do hope that karaoke occasionally returns to the club, as it’s a quality venue! J. M. Charity Night at Saffron Lane W. M. C.

At a Charity Night at Saffron Lane WMC on Friday May 30th, the artists that appeared included Steve Sinatra, Lee Henfrey, Martyn Russell, Rachel Paul, Nicola Lovell and Steve & The Old Gitts.Once again all the artists were on top form, with a special mention for Nicola’s daughter Gemma - watch out for her in a year or so! Gemma did a duet with Nicola and sounded great, as did all the acts.Disappointing audience-wise, but around £400.00 was raised for the mesothelioma cancer charity - once again thanks to all the artists. First of all I must apologise to the millions of Club News readers for not commencing my articles before now, but due to circumstances I could not control, I have just not had the time to rack my brains and put hopefully, loads of nostalgia down in writing. My aim is to construct a number of articles, on subjects such as Ent Secs, agencies, solo artistes, groups, backing duos and clubs. I must also apologise to anyone if their favourite person in the then Clubland is not mentioned, as I am knocking on a bit and the memory is not as good as it was. If anyone does want their favourite mentioned in a later issue, you can contact me by e-mail on mail@trevstokes.plus.com and please forgive me if some of these top people have passed on to the great Clubland in the sky. I know all of them will be looking down and probably saying, “he’s rabbiting on again”.Please note that this nostalgia goes back about 30 to 35 years when everyone knows is when clubs were in their heyday with entertainment every night of the week, and yes, Sunday lunchtime concerts at lots of clubs in Leicester and Shire. Does anyone remember the strippers at the Notts Club on Sunday lunchtimes? I can remember one instance when I was appearing at the Notts and having to supply the backing music for the stripper with my group Sunday Wine. In those times lots of artistes used to appear on Saturday and Sunday evenings, plus Sunday lunchtimes for the princely sum of about £30.00.Tuesday evenings and the Shop Window at the Boot & Shoe Club was when artistes could fill their diaries as the club was brimming over with Ent Secs, and get this - they all stayed until the end of the full shows! If you did not get there by 7pm you wouldn’t get a seat. Tuesday evenings were very well run by the Ent Secs Council; a big raffle was organised for charities, usually run by Big Eric Jonno, Ent Sec of the Notts , ably assisted by the legend himself, Jim Robinson, Ent Sec of the West End, also helped along by Ray Freakley, Ent Sec of Old Aylestone Social and another great bloke Ronnie Bryan, also of the West End club.Solo artistes I used to pal about with at these Shop Windows were my best mate, Paul Bolger, the Irish crooner, Gordon Rogers, the guy who never went anywhere without his high stool, and also Ronnie Moore from Mountsorrel. All super vocalists in their own right. Whilst on the subject of the Boot & Shoe the Ent Sec at that time was Wally Fowkes. a big somewhat frightening kind of guy who had his work cut out engaging all the artistes to fill one of the best concert rooms in the city, but he did his job admirably. I also remember the backing organist, Royston Beaumont who did a great job playing for all the artistes. No false backing in those days as almost every club in the land had their own organist and drummer and sometimes a bass player or other instrument.On the subject of backing we had some very very good musician duos in Leicester and Shire. Ray Longland and his son Steve provided top class backing at the fabulous Scraptoft Valley, Nigel Makepeace and Richard, super backing mainly at the Wigston Legion, Pat Grady and Rod Bates at the Latimer Ward and theTwo T’s, Tony Lacey and Tim Farne who later ran an agency. Quite a few more good backing musicians come to mind and I will mention more later. I must also state that not every duo was first class, in fact some duos were rubbish at backing solo artistes, but to my way of thinking the atmosphere in concert rooms seemed to be better due to everything being live. Have you noticed I have stated ‘artistes’? In quite a few publications they are noted as artists. Anyone that is any sort of entertainer is an artiste with a e, an artist to me is a painter! I suppose someone will take this up with me but it won’t change my way of thinking, enough said! Trev Charles
