EDITORIALSo much has gone on over the past few weeks, on and off the box, with The X Factor tour coming to an end at Birmingham NEC. I must say the show was amazing from start to finish, and the staff were also brilliant, nothing was too much trouble, from parking up to a wheelchair for Sara at the end. 10 out of 10 for looking after us! The show itself, like I said, was amazing, acts on suspended wires, coming up out of the floor, from the main stage to another halfway in the audience, the sound and lighting etc., second to none, and the quality of all the finalists was superb, for me (no offence Sam) Luke has really matured well, and he just nailed his part in the show. Well done also to Leicesters very own X Factor winner; Sam was again flawless, she really knows how to work an audience, and she made comment to the fact that she’s expecting again! Congratulations Sam from everyone in Clubland! When you look at the age of most of the acts it just shows you, the youth of today have so much talent. Moving across to The Voice, Leicester had a couple of finalists, Well done to Sally for

reaching the final, and yet again the others in the final, their ages!! The winner Jermaine only 19 the world at his feet, so much talent in this country, even the opening show of Britains Got Talent, showed a fantastic boy band who have only been together for 1 month, and wow what voices, for me already leading contenders for the final! and again so young. Remember if they get to the final I predicted them to get there, the lads are called Collabro. Moving on, the 5-a-side football KO is being held on Saturday 10th May, at Charnor Rd School, New Parks, draw made at 12.00. £15 per team, £100 for the winners. You will also see the golf fixtures for this season in this issue, for more information on these or any other sports, please contact me on the number or e-mail address below. We seem to be losing a few clubs in adver t is ing the i r enter ta inment o f late!.....why? You know it does pay to advertise, if only a small advert, some of you put 1 or 2 pages in other entertainment mags so spread your costs and advertise a little in all mags. If need be we can arrange your advert to suit your needs ie. acts, bingo, quizzes, dances, boxing show, tributes etc.,etc. Just give me an e-mail or a ring and I will call round to see you. Maybe you want to advertise and don’t know the costs or what is involved, just ring me!!Entertainment Secretaries at the meeting at Lutterworth, included The Elms, Pool, Latimer, South Wigston WMC, Melton RBL, Lutterworth, Monsell and Thurmaston PWMC, All June Club News material to be with me by the 7th May please, to D. L. Rollason, 25 Amyson Road, Leicester LE5 2EB, telephone 0116,2410011 or e-mail [email protected] note no Ent. Secs. meeting this month (May), next one June 29th at Enderby.

Mesothelioma Charity NightOn Friday February 28th we held a Charity Night at The Elms Social & Service Club, Wigston Magna, compered by Steve Sinatra.Steve opened the evening with three songs superbly sang, then Martyn Russell followed with half an hour of mixed songs from the 60's and 70's. Rachel Ball, who was terrific also gave the audience a great repertoire of songs. Steve Sinatra then did a few songs with Lee Henfrey sounding very good as a duo. Continuing the evening we had a local group, Steve and The Old Gits, four very good guitarists. Soul Providers (Hue and Chris) were superb. Steve Sinatra wound the evening up with a few more songs finalising with a song totally sung in Italian, and received a standing ovation. We thank all the artists for giving their time up for this very worthy cause. Total raised on the night was £845.00. A great night! Mick Welsh

Letter to The EditorMy take on today's entertainment. I was born in Lancashire, where we had tons of clubs - Labour Clubs, Conservative Clubs, Working Mens Clubs, Legion Clubs, Oddfellows and Miners clubs. We could become Boy Members at 14, which allowed us to play sports and games. Boys memberships were free until the age of 18 at my club. The Boldminers Club had 9 snooker tables, 6 football pitches, 2 bowling greens, 2 tennis courts and a lovely ball room with a 9 piece resident band. We had dances three times a week, a concert room with top acts appearing on Fridays, Saturdays and Sunday lunchtime and night. In the week the ballroom opened for 11-17 year olds, we had two or three bands and records were only played between change overs. I remember we had Farons Flamingos, Wee Willy Harris, Millie Small, Big Three, etc. So today’s scene is poor compared to all the live acts I was brought up on. Even our singers had resident bands to play their dots; there were keyboard, pianos and drums. Every club had that, and singers never had backing tapes! As I got to the age of 16-17 we had a dance club called the Plaza which had 3 live bands every night, Every Liverpool and Manchester band was on, bands like The Beatles, The Searchers, Gerry Deville, The City Kings, The Fourmost, Freddie and The Dreamers, Billy J Kramer and The Dakotas etc. They were great times! THE ELMS SOCIAL AND SERVICE CLUBWe’ve been going to Saffron Lane WMC recently a few times on a Sunday night to see local singers including Lesley, Karen West, Martyn Russell and Steve Sinatra. When Lesley was on she sang in the concert room and as we entered the room I was shocked and delighted to see Johnny Sprakko has returned to the club as Concert Chairman. He was chairman for many years in the good old days when the club used to be full all weekend, and for me one of the best around, doing a very professional job as well as treating everyone to his disturbing sense of humour. There are no characters like him around now which is a shame, so it’s a delight to see him back healthy and I’m pleased to say he’s not changed a bit. The entertainment at the club continuing on in February saw the first appearance here for three piece Limousine, who played really well a wide selection of material although I thought vocally they were a bit weak and could do with a stronger lead vocalist, but they still went down ok and I’m sure will remain busy. The month ended on an unbelievable night. It was the Charity Show in aid of Mesothelioma with the night dedicated to the memory of Les Burrows. Les was a very popular man and the sight of the full concert room clarified it. The show was excellent with compere Steve Sinatra doing a superb job keeping the show flowing throughout and also being kind enough to sing a set after one of the acts had to pull out. Also on the show all doing a great sets were Martyn Russell (who was celebrating his wedding anniversary on the night), The Old Gits, Rachel Ball and Soul Providers. They all performed free of charge when they could’ve been working elsewhere for a fee on a Friday. We were all treated by a bonus song from Saffron Lane member Lee who has been seen singing in Blackpool. There was a splendid big raffle containing some lovely prizes and I’m pleased to announce that an amazing £845 was raised. Thank you to everyone for contributing and showing your generosity, I know that Les’s wife Kathy is very appreciative. Also thanks to Josh for doing the door on the night. There will be another show for this Charity very soon at Saffron Lane WMC so look out for it. March began with the welcome return to the club for local female duo Double Trouble. These girls never fail to have a good night here and this was no exception, singing a good varied two sets of songs from the 60's to present day with both having star quality lead vocals and harmonies. Next up was the return of local vocalist Jay who as always proved to be one of the best singers around; songs by the likes of Bon Jovi, Don McLean, Take That and Garth Brooks along with his charming personality he continues to be a big hit. Following him was the welcome return for Coventry duo 2 Of Us, an unusual but effective set up with a guitarist and a percussionist playing bongo’s and cymbals. They primarily play sixties songs by the likes of The Move, The Searchers, Cliff Bennett, The Kinks, Rolling Stones and a lot of The Beatles. Their great singing and playing ensured that they kept the concert room full all night with a full dance floor after the bingo. Next was the return to the club after a few years for Derby band Strange Days who expanded to four piece with the addition of an excellent lead guitarist. Again a varied show to suit all ages and tastes including songs by The Foundations, The Buggles, Queen, The Feeling and Emerson, Lake & Palmer. We then had a double tribute show with Stephen James doing fabulous tributes to Michael Buble and Olly Murs to a decent turn out who all thoroughly enjoyed it. I am now doing a monthly blog on the website featuring various stories from my years in clubland. Have a look on www. theelms.co See ya next month... Steve Rushin (Ent Sec)
