EDITORIALThis month’s Editorial was for last month’s issue but due to the passing of Mick Knight and Dennis Naylor, I held it back for this time. However, we unfortunately have lost two more from the entertainment scene; Clive Jones - Dr Pesky and Roy Poselthwaite - Skip. Clive was a very zany sort of guy, a brilliant musician, Steve’s write-up will explain more. Skip....well, what can I say? A true gentleman, Skip engaged me on many occasions when he was Entertainment Secretary at Coleman Road Social Club. He was one of the old school, a man who got on with everyone; both will be sadly missed!Wedding bells for one of the Ent Secs Council officials is on the horizon!! No, it’s not me although I have the pleasure of being asked to be the Best Man. I’m sure the man himself will, in future issues of Club News, reveal himself!Back in September I was on holiday in Tenerife, where I saw some great entertainment in Zacarys, Sunningdale Viillage, Golf De Ser, Tenerife. Entertainment seven nights a week, of which two acts stood out for me, The Goodfellows are a male duo
who have been together for 14 years! Mat La Bianca and Al Toscani, as the names suggest, are originally from Italy but for the last few years have been working the island in bars and hotels, etc. Guitarist and saxophone player, these guys are the bizz!! Excellent repertoire and voices too! Some of their material you don’t hear other acts do. They even got Ken and myself up the second week they were on, we did part of their show with them singing around 6 songs! The following night featured Juke Box, a male trio singing songs from the 70s, 80s and 90s; again great vocals/keyboard and guitar. The lead singer has a fantastic unique voice when he performs his songs. Both acts are excellent and well worth going to see if you’re on holiday in Tenerife!I heard this on the grapevine - that Martin Harvey was celebrating a birthday the other week in Dunton Bassett, where I believe he got up and sang with the band that had been engaged to play at the party. The band.... The Munix be it the new line-up but still with Paul and Neil original members, I’m told Martin last sang with them in 1970 Martin and The Munix, I would loved to see them together again. Well only a few weeks away and Christmas will be upon us again, where have the months gone? A review on 2014 in next months issue! A TRIBUTE TO CLIVE JONESI hope that there’s going to be some good news soon. Unfortunately another well known and popular entertainer, Clive Jones, sadly passed away at the age of 65 after a long battle with cancer. Clive gave a lot of people a lot of pleasure over the years with his varied and successful career. The first band that I knew of that he was in was the late 60's/early70's band Black Widow. They released a few albums and they sounded like a cross between Black Sabbath and Jethro Tull. Showaddywaddy drummer Romeo Challenger was also with them for a while.
Following their demise Clive formed the band Step Inside who played the club circuit, quickly developing a huge following. They were classed as outrageous due to them applying make-up and dressing in women’s clothes including stockings and suspenders, they even got banned from one club because of this. The next band he was in was the rock band Agony Bag who released a single called Rabies Is A Killer and played many venues in Leicester. They also dressed in very colourful outfits and used a few special effects such as smoke bombs and blood capsules.
After them came a fun/rock band under the name of Dirty Duvet who did powerful versions of songs like Delilah, Hoots Mon and Crazy Horses. They played a few clubs featuring both their own songs and covers. They were the last band Clive was in as next he decided to team up with a lady for the duo The Peskies. This featured some comedy songs and humorous banter and again, were very original.
After the lady left the duo Clive opted to go solo under the name of Dr Pesky and he performed for many years up to his illness. I booked him many times and he actually appeared on the show we put on at Great Wigston WMC to open the extended concert room. Clive wrote many songs both serious and funny, and was also a first class musician playing sax and flute. His ambition was to write a Eurovision Song Contest song but sadly that was never realised.
