Well most people that I’ve spoken to love the colour format of the Club News, and most of the clubs have taken on board the increase for the colour, which is great ,I believe, for our Club News readers! My apologies to Trev Charles for not putting in “to be continued” at the end of his trip in the nostalgia of Yesteryear in Clubland. This has been rectified this month Trev (sorry). By the way again great feedback from your article! One being Mr. Fred Ward at a party the other week at the Latimer, he gave me food for thought? How many acts from years gone by are still around, I say acts, entertainment secretaries/agents/live backing?? Could we maybe arrange a reunion - a get together, if so please give me a ring on 0116 2410011. If I’m not in, leave a message with your contact details!! It would be great for all of us to catch up on the past.
Unfortunately, due to space restrictions, we’re unable to include Trev’s writeup this month. However, you can rest assured that his Nostalgia column will continue to be featured in future issues!As you will see from this issue, Leicester are hosting “The Central Command Show” at Braunstone Victoria WMC on Friday 3rd October 2014, a great line-up of top acts is assured. See advert. Just before the season gets too far, my predictions this year (which were better than Steve’s last year) are Arsenal - premier league, Derby - championship, Barnsley - league one and Portsmouth - league two.Latimer Ward Club recently had work done to the cellar cooling system by the Cadeby Group Ltd., as advertised in this issue. We found them to be very professional and reliable, and we would recommend them to carry out works in your club.Don’t forget we have a meeting this month at Braunstone & District on the 28th, let’s hope we see more entertainment secretaries than the last meeting at Leicester Railwaymens, albeit a few were on holiday!! THE ELMS SOCIAL AND SERVICE CLUB
Isn’t the new look, trendy, colourful Club News an improvement, it’s amazing how some colour can make such a difference and judging by some positive comments I’ve heard, many of you agree.
We thoroughly enjoyed a smashing holiday in Nerja, Spain. A lovely clean, picturesque resort and some good entertainment. We saw a fabulous male duo, originally from London, now living in Nerja, called The Flying Dolphins, a great male vocalist from Wales, now living Spain called Ricky, a first class acoustic guitar/vocalist Jo Fletcher who commutes back and forth from England to Spain and a four piece tribute to Motown and Soul. It was my first time ever abroad and it won’t be the last, I loved it and it’s all thanks to the lovely love of my life Val for getting me there. Reports from my second holiday with her next month - Blackpool.
The entertainment at The Elms to end June was the first appearance here for Mansfield male duo Classix Gold, a good repertoire of 60's and 70's songs mainly with good vocals and guitar work. July started with a relatively new band on the circuit called The Del Sharrons. As well as having a great name (I love the play on words), I’m so pleased that they went down well as I saw them on a Shop Window at New Parks Social Club earlier this year and I saw an immensely talented group of young musicians along with the amazing voice of, would you believe, Sharon, and the great thing is that they clearly get off on playing 50's and 60's songs with the majority rarely heard in the Clubs. A great night from a band who I’m sure will never be short of work and could go far.
Following them was the welcome return to the club of one of Leicesters best vocalists, Neil Warner. As always Neil delivered a fantastic show keeping everyone entertained all night with songs by the likes of Robbie Williams, Dean Martin, The Bee Gees, Madness and The Housemartins, working hard all night, another winner was the result. I missed Peter May and Steven James, but I’m reliably informed they were both great and gave us good nights and will be welcomed back in the not too distant future. It was interesting to read Trev Charles’ write up but the worrying thing is, that as I was reading it, I was constantly nodding my head as I’m sure Carl Stevens was as well. I can certainly relate and remember those days, no, I’m not worried, I’m glad. I’m looking forward to the next one.

PAYING FOR ENTRY TO C.I.U.CLUBS.
This has always been a sore issue in many clubs going back years.
When I was at the Belgrave Liberal I had two paid shows, one was Rocking On Heavens Door, a brilliant theatre show I saw at Yarmouth pier.
I negotiated £2000 for a date in September and De Montfort Hall objected because they had them on in October. So ok, I changed the date to November. It couldn’t have worked out better; their cheapest ticket was £17.50, and the show was a big success. We sold our 320 tickets at £10 each and I could have sold 1000!
The other one was a mid-week Jimmy White exhibition show, again sold out.
Top shows do cost more, and times have changed - there’s an old saying, quality costs!
Here at Thurmaston P.W.M.C.we are still putting good stuff on three nights a week with no charge. A lot of our customers travel from Anstey, Belgrave, New Parks, Syston etc, and our beers are cheap so it offsets cost of a taxi.

Over the May Bank Holiday weekend Enderby & District Social Club held a Fun Weekend for its members and guests to raise money for charity.Many events were organised including a 10 team 6-a-side football tournament, a pram race
around Enderby, children’s entertainment marquee, crafts and arts fair and bouncy castle - just to mention a few.An army of members helped to run all the events, and a massive ‘well done’ must go to them.In total over £3000.00 was raised and was shared between two charities; the Air Ambulance and Help For Heroes.Many thanks to all who came along and made this event such a huge success!Seen in the picture are (L - R) Kate Harrington of Help For Heroes, Dave Vear (Club President) and Ivan Ball M.B.E. of the Air Ambulance Service.

Wow, looks like summer is finally here.... for the time being! In July I went to the Musician (pub) in town for the first time. That night The Bon Jovi Experience were playing and I thought I would go and see what they were like. They were supported by a local band called The Rock Junkies. The Rock Junkies were brilliant, with songs by The Foo Fighters, Guns N Roses, Journey, AC/DC. They have a outstanding female lead vocalist, backed by fantastic musicians. The bass player and the keyboardist are brilliant The headliner of the night, of course, was The Bon Jovi Experience, from Shropshire, WOW, the lead singer even resembles Jon Bon Jovi, They did a straight 2 hour show, performing favourites like, Keep The Faith, It's My Life, Living On A Prayer and Always. These guys were absolutely fabulous, they had the crowd going from start to finish. I understand that both bands won’t go down in all the clubs in Leicester but please Ent Secs give them a chance they will both give you a fantastic nightI went to Thurmaston in August to see Funktion Junction. This was a last minute gig as Ray had been let down after the band that was due to appear disbanded and didn't let Ray know. Funktion Junction saw Ray’s appeal on Facebook and stepped up. As I have said before a fantastic band. That night especially as the usual keyboardist, Paul, was in hospital and so again thanks to Facebook a lovely keyboardist, Scott, travelled from Aylesbury to stand in. Bearing in mind the band and Scott had never met before you could not tell, Scott was brilliant and blended in well. With songs from Farrell Williams, AC/DC, Adele, Amy Winehouse, Bon Jovi and Kings of Leon a brilliant night was had by all. Mick, Maggie, Justin and Garth are all brilliant at what they do and a must to see..I often on my travels hear members talking and saying "Oh, this club and that club always have the same entertainment on and it's boring" and yes I do think that, some Ent Secs stick to what they know or like with no consideration to what the members like or want... I remember years ago Ent Secs would write up in here saying they had been to Coventry, Derby, Nottingham etc. and seen a brilliant artistes and then got them in at the club they represented. Most now I believe don't go out and see what is out there, yes there is a risk some artistes won't work at one club but will at another. Until you try you wont know. I see Trev Charles is writing about yesteryear, so I rattled my brains and came up with a few names that I remembered, Glen Christie (ok, he is my brother), Aces and Kings, Mirror Image, Dirty Duvet, Pete York, Capone, West End, Heaven Sent and an agent by the name of John Newman, I do remember Richard and Nigel from the Wigston Legion, maybe because at the age of about 8 I used to help Richard pack up his drum kit!!!! Nigel I believe owned Intersound on Narborough Road and Richard ran his own fruit and veg shop in Broughton Astley. Well thats it for this month. Summer will soon be over and the shops will be full of Christmas gifts!!! My highlight of the year will be seeing Enrique Iglesias in Birmingham at the end of November! Lisa
