EDITORIAL“SAM TASTIC’ we all, well most of us, knew Sam would win X-Factor. It was great to see her returning to Leicester, and of course it helped with votes pouring in to help her win the X-Factor, topping the votes 8 out of the last 10 weeks, every judge, week by week gave her a stunning review, I have said it before, Sam can sing anything, once she gets the air into her lungs she just belts it out! Subject to space in this issue, there are a few pictures of her recent visit to the Eyres Monsell Club! I don’t know about your club, but I do know that a few clubs didn’t get much support over the Christmas/New Year period. I also know that with a few major problems in a couple of our clubs, it could possibly put another nail or so in the coffin! I had one of our members paying up the other week, asking ‘where’s the
concert room gone?’ We sold it over two years ago. It just shows you, members not using their clubs!!! I have said it before and I will carry on saying it .............if each member that doesn’t normally use their own club , did use their club once a month and spent maybe £10 over the bar, playing bingo maybe, it would inject a lot more revenue into the running and keeping the clubs alive and OPEN!! Moving on to a date for the Entertainment Secretaries diary, Sunday 16th March is the date for the Central Ent. Secs. Council at Eyres Monsell WMC. Well, short and sweet this month. Entertainment Secretaries at the meeting at Newfoundpool included Sileby, Latimer, Thurmaston, South Wigston WMC, The Elms, Pool and Lutterworth. All March material will hopefully already be in by now due to holidays. If any Ent. Secs. wish to send in other months entertainment - in advance, you can by mail or e-mail. The Ent. Secs. council will not be holding meetings or Shop Windows in May, August or December 2014 so if you wish you can send your Club News material as soon as you have it I know of a few clubs that have booked all their entertainment for the year already! Well 2014 is here and hopefully it will be better than 2013, for me anyway...! Congratulations to Sam Bailey for winning the X Factor, I knew she would do it, and good luck with the Beyonce tour. In the last few months of 2013 I went to see various artists locally. I had the pleasure of seeing the newly re-formed Munix, what can I say? Brilliant, with songs from The Killers to the Tremeloes - four great musicians. Next I saw Retro, Mark and Richard entertained the audience with a variety of 80's music, some quite random songs too and a few 60's tunes thrown in for good measure. Next was Mick Knight (again, lol) who seems to be gathering more members for his fan club!!! Mick performed a rendition of Mud's Lonely This Christmas, which had myself and Hannah, his partner, in stitches!!! (sorry x), he also had a lady dancing on the tables! Mick had the audience singing along to his rendition of Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer and Jingle Bells....... Martin Russell made an appearance and sang Working Man, I haven't seen Martin sing for a few years and he is still as good as when I last saw him. I see Mick even made the Leicester Mercury, after he stepped in to replace Sam Bailey for Xmas Eve. If you haven't seen Mick yet then where have you been for the last 30+ years??? He is a must see for a fantastic night out. Outside of Leicester I went to see Steve Ellis and Love Affair (Rainbow Valley and Everlasting Love) Steve is now in his early 70's and still has it in him, with a lively performance, and the band are fantastic too, all in 60's outfits!!! If anyone is interested in enquiring about booking Steve Ellis and Love affair give Malcolm a ring on 07771 758142, they are well worth the money they are asking!!! On a final note, I would like to say something about clubs and New Years Eve. For 5 months I had planned to go to a local WMC to see someone who I class as a close friend, with my daughter, only to find out 3 days before that for one night only the club was not letting children in at all! My memories as a child of New Years Eve was going to the 'Legion' with my parents and having a fantastic time. Many of you reading this knew my Dad, and also know that I lost him 10 months after I lost my Mum, and so New Years Eve is a very emotional time for me as they always rang me at midnight to wish me Happy New Year and 4 years later it still upsets me and this would be the first time since I lost them that there was anything decent on locally. So my question is to the powers that be, is WHY on this night do you not allow children into your club? Surely this then reduces takings behind the bar as parents spend money on their children. To me this is a special family night. My other 'beef' is why charge members for the night, yes I know artists charge more and that has to be paid for but surely if you don't charge to get in then more people will come... As a single parent I can't justify paying £5-£10 each to see a local artist before even buying drinks etc. Maybe Ent. Secs. and Committees will bear this in mind for next year. Maybe even adding a special artist to the night would improve attendance.......Well moving swiftly on, as you jolly well do, Easter will soon be upon us!!!!! Lisa

THE ELMS SOCIAL AND EX-SERVICE CLUBOn Friday February 28th there is a special Charity Show at the club in aid of Mesothelioma, which is a form of cancer that is caused by asbestos, that sadly affected and put an early end to the life of Les Burrows, one of the nicest men I’ve had the pleasure to have proudly known. There are six of Leicester’s best acts on the show, you generally find out that they don’t say no providing that they are available when they’re told that it’s in memory of Les, and it didn’t take long to put the show together. This is the third show that has been arranged by Mick Welsh who has done a splendid job and over £3000 has been raised so far which speaks volumes, and with your never ending generosity, support it once again by attending the show and let’s nudge it towards the £4000. You are all very welcome, tickets are only £5 and are available at the club or from Mick Welsh via Eyres Monsell WMC.Not much to report on this month as the material has to be in a bit earlier (I’ll make up for it next month).The entertainment at the club to continue November was a very slight change. It should have been Soul Providers but Hue had a Foundations gig he had to do, but all was not lost as Chris Robin, the other half, did the show on his own as I knew he was good enough to do so and I wasn’t wrong. Songs from the 60's to present day were enjoyed by all with lots of positive comments afterwards. A very strong singer with a great vocal range. Those who were disappointed it wasn’t a duo, don’t despair, they’re appearing on the aforementioned Charity Show. Finishing the month we saw the welcome return of local vocalist Chrissy. She proved once again to be one of our best singers, singing some great songs by the likes of The Carpenters, Abba and The New Seekers. The small but appreciative audience liked her, with a few dancers at the end of the night. She will always be welcomed back. December began with one of Leicesters best, if not the best live bands. Ready Steady Go rocked the place with an authentic night of solid 60's sounds including songs by The Animals, Rolling Stones, Procol Harem, Del Shannon and The Kinks.
