Stewardship Corner Just a few weeks back we were all watching the Olympics and hearing the chants of USA…USA…as our American athletes competed against the best in the world. Now with the kickoff of this year’s Catholic Services Appeal, maybe the chant should go out as CSA…CSA…! Just as we watched and supported our athletes in the Olympics, we hope you will support this year’s appeal both prayerfully and financially.

Bishop Walkowiak is asking you to make a commitment to support the work of our diocesan programs and ministries that provide services that no one parish could provide on its own through the Catholic Services Appeal (CSA). Your gift to CSA enables diocesan and parish ministries to reach out to people in our 11 counties in a variety of ways, including formation of our seminarians; youth programming; support for the homebound and those who are incarcerated; families who are struggling; the hungry; and the homeless. Through CSA we all work together to care for the Church by sharing the gifts God has granted us.

Our parish goal for 2018 is $162,992 and 100% participation, which means a pledge card from every parish family. Please experience the joy of giving and join us as we work to continue God’s work of spirituality, charity, and education.

We are confident that your generosity – your sacrificial giving will enable us to exceed our goal, but everyone’s participation is needed. Keep in mind that any amount raised above our goal stays in this parish. Thank you for doing your part for CSA 2018.

So, let’s hear that chant … CSA…CSA…CSA! Please prayerfully consider what your sacrificial gift will be for this years Catholic Services Appeal.

These Forty Days of Lent Lent is a season of prayer and penance set apart by the Church to recall Our Lord’s fast in the desert and to prepare us for Easter. The number forty has special meaning in the Bible, and is symbolic of preparation before a major life change. Moses spent forty days fasting and praying on Mount Zion before receiving the Ten Commandments. (Ex. 34: 28). The people of Israel wandered for forty years in the desert before entering the Promised Land (Num. 14: 3). Jesus spends forty days fasting and praying in the desert before leaving His old life as the son of a carpenter and beginning His public ministry to bring new life to the entire world.

The forty days of Lent invite us to unite ourselves with Jesus in the desert, to change our own lives, to change our hearts. During this season, we focus more on our souls than our bodies. Voluntarily “giving up” worldly things can serve as little acts of penance, but also helps remind us to hunger for God alone. When we say “no” to the little things we enjoy, such as cookies, coffee, movies, or internet, we grow in self-control. Greater self-discipline in little things helps us become stronger in our ability to say “no” to greater temptations. We exercise and train our own mind, heart and will to seek the Lord. Adding little acts of love and self-sacrifice to each day helps us focus more on charity and giving of ourselves for the good of others. Spending more time in prayer and reading of Scripture helps us grow in our relationship with God, our loving Father.

Through our Lenten acts of prayer, fasting, almsgiving and charity, our hearts are more fully and consciously disposed to the Will and the Love of Christ. As we unite ourselves to Jesus in the desert, we prepare ourselves to more fully unite with His selfless Sacrifice of Love on the Cross, and His Resurrection that gives everlasting Life for all humanity. Ideally, our spiritual practices during these forty days of Lent change our lives in such a way that we desire to continue them in some way even after Lent has ended. Thus, we continue to grow in holiness, and in deeper love for God and for others.

Evening of Reconciliation: The Light is ON!

Lent is a perfect time to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

On Thursday, March 15, Holy Family will hold its Evening of Reconciliation from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. This is also the diocesan day for “The Light is ON”,

so the Sacrament will be available in most parishes throughout the diocese. Check the diocesan website to verify hours for other parishes if you are not able to receive the Sacrament here at Holy Family. All are strongly encouraged to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity!

Live Stations of the Cross Join us at 7:00 PM on Friday evenings during Lent for the Stations of the Cross. On Friday, March 23, we will have Live Stations of the Cross. What is that? Come see! On all Fridays except Good Friday, come early before the Stations for Soup Supper beginning at 6:00 PM in the Holy Family Center.

Lenten Taize Prayer Service ~ Monday, March 19, 7:00 -8:00 PM in church

Taize is a form of prayer that began in northern France during the

Second World War, and has been growing in popularity and

spreading around the world ever since. Candlelight, music,

silence, Scripture and intercessory prayer invite us to be still and

to listen for the Voice of God. Join us for this peaceful evening

of quiet prayer.

Auction 2018 – God at Work If you had the opportunity to attend last year’s auction you know how much fun everyone had. We were able to raise over $45,000 for Habitat for Humanity. Raising that kind of money doesn’t happen without the generous donations from our community in and around Caledonia and our own community at Holy Family Parish.

We know that you have seen our request for donations for this year’s auction which will be on May 18th. This year we will be donating the money raised to help with the expense of shipping a container filled with medical supplies to Uganda. We will also be donating money to our Local Veteran’s Home to help purchase items from their wish list.

Are you struggling with ideas for an item/items to donate? No worries, we can help you out. Themed gift baskets of any sort are always very popular, sporting tickets, apparel from your favorite team, grills, gift cards, edible treats, homemade items such as quilts or blankets. There isn’t a bad idea for a donation. Of course, we will be happy to do the shopping for you if you would rather donate money. Checks can be made out to Holy Family Parish. We can purchase a bigger item when pooling money together.

As you can imagine the auction won’t be a success without items to bid on. Please consider donating to this great cause. We appreciate any and all NEW items. Donation forms can be found below, and are also in the narthex or on the Parish website www.holyfamilycaledonia.org.

Invitations will be available soon. Last year the auction was a sold out event! Please mark your calendar and plan on attending.

TRUE TRUE TRUE TRUE true goodness ~ true beauty ~ true love

High School Retreat - March 16-18 We are surrounded by a lot of ‘opinions’ everyday - in school, at home, and with friends. But what about when opinions aren’t enough? We also hear people using vague phrases like “my truth” and “your truth”. But what if you’re craving the REAL authentic truth? During this weekend retreat at Camp Geneva, high schoolers will explore what is true about the things that matter: true goodness, true beauty, and true love. It will be a weekend of fun, bonding, and praising our Lord, who is Himself, the Author of truth.

Adult Faith Formation Coordinator With Gail Schwartz leaving, we are looking for a part-time coordinator of

adult formation. The position will entail coordinating faith formation for adults including: speakers, adult learning/study groups, book study, parish mission, exhibits, online learning, adult Confirmation prep, college-age/post HS/emerging adults ministry, etc., and appropriate promotion/marketing and evangelization efforts for adults to participate in these endeavors. Holy Family has solid adult formation offerings going, so we are looking for someone to continue those and build from there. An ability to understand and relate to adults ranging from recent graduates to older adults is important, solid understanding of the Catholic faith is important (and an ongoing desire to learn and grow more), the ability to work collaboratively with others is a must, and a grasp for the variety of formation delivery methods, authors/speakers, and interests of adults would be wonderful. If you know someone who would be a good fit, please pass along word to them and ask them to email their interest to Christine Shafer [email protected].

Food Pantry It is very humbling to witness the generosity of Holy Family Catholic Church. Because of your overwhelming contributions, you have helped the growing number of hungry families in the community we serve. We work diligently to be good stewards of your generous donations.

The following items are always needed:

Canned diced tomato, Spaghetti, Canned meats (tuna, chicken, etc.), Canned stew, Cereal, Soups, Crackers (saltines, graham), Shelf-stable or long-life Milk , Laundry Detergent

Thank you for helping those who struggle in life.

Elementary Faith Formation Happenings I recently attended a small women’s bible study discussion group. We watched a short video by Fr. Mike Schmitz called “The Secret to Sticking to a New Years Resolution”. It’s March, how many of us have already left our New Year’s resolution in the dust? Fr. Mike talked about the 2010 Great Britain cycling team and how their coach led them to winning the Tour de France by making 1% daily changes. Our study group talked about how many of us felt like we get a second chance at a more faith filled “resolution” during Lent. We asked why we are often more successful in our Lenten sacrifices and changes than we are for a New Year’s Resolution? Deacon Harold shared with us during the Parish Mission how we, as Catholics practice our Faith in preparation for Life much like an athlete practices their sport for a game. There are many opportunities large and small during Lent to engage in the parish and faith community. What is a 1% change you could make as a family during this Lenten season to deepen your faith? It could be as simple as adding a daily prayer to family life, reading the Lenten Black books together, or discussing with your child what they learned about in CFF. It could also be bigger like attending soup supper and Stations of the Cross, or deciding to serve together as a family in a ministry. What do you feel called to?

Please pray for our 2nd graders who are busy preparing for First Holy Communion. They made their altar cloth squares that will be sewn together to make one big altar cloth that will be used on the Altar in April at their First Communion. They are also working hard on their gold books that they will keep as memories of this special sacrament. Watch for their photos to be displayed soon on the banner in the Narthex. They appreciate everyone’s prayers as they continue to prepare themselves to receive Jesus.
