The Great Gonzo

By Izzy and Julian

Houston graffiti artist Mario Figueroa Jr. (also known as Gonzo 247) was approached several

months ago by the NCAA with a pretty amazing request. The athletic organization wanted some-

thing unique when it came to designing the bracket. The painting stands eight feet high and six-

teen feet long. It’s an explosion of colors radiating from an empty spot in the center which will

eventually hold the winning team’s logo. As teams advance to the next round, Gonzo updates the

blank spaces. They thought it was important to give it a cool Houston flair. The painting is on dis-

play at the Houston Zoo until next week before moving to the Hyatt downtown, the headquarters

for the Final Four. Gonzo also helped out the Houston Dynamo by painting the new black kit for

the 2016 season all in one day!!

NCAA Final Four John Bruton and Garrett Young

This was a very exciting time for college basketball fans because it was the Final Four! All

the teams have given it their all to get this far. The teams were Villanova, Oklahoma, North Caro-

lina, and Syracuse. Villanova prevailed against Oklahoma as North Carolina beat Syracuse. In

the championship game Villanova pulled out the win because of a three-point buzzer beater

against North Carolina. It was one of the most intense games in NCAA history!

Earth Day

By Mandy Nguyen

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated worldwide on April 22, to support environmental

protection. It was first celebrated in 1970, is now recognized globally by the Earth Day Network,

and is celebrated in more than 192 countries each year. Earth Day, founded by Senator Gaylord

Nelson, was first organized in 1970 to promote ecology and respect for life on the planet, as well

as, to encourage awareness of the growing problems of air, water and pollution.

Earth day is usually celebrated with outdoor performances, where individuals or groups

perform acts of service for the earth. Typical ways of observing Earth Day include planting trees,

picking up roadside trash, participating in programs for recycling and conservation, and using

recyclable containers for snacks and lunches. Earth Day is a fun day to hang out with family and

friends outdoors. It’s a way to work together, communicate, and have fun!

Obama Recreates Relations with the Cuban Government

By: Charlie Birbeck and Gabe Trevino

President Barack Obama has recently visited Cuba and reopened relations with the communist nation

making history as the first president to visit Cuba in 90 years. Cuba was an exciting place for tourists in the

20’s, 30’s, and 40’s. Life in Cuba quickly changed in 1956, when a man named Fidel Castro started a revolt

against the U.S. The revolt was a success and Castro a self-declared communist, became president in 1959. To

this day, Cuba is a communist nation, and ever since the revolutions ended, the United States has not had a

good relationship with Cuba or its government. Earlier this month President Obama visited Cuba and reopened

relations. He is the first president to visit Cuba in over 90 years! The president of Cuba, Raul Castro, and

Obama talked in a conference and discussed issues with trade. Many people were not happy with Obama’s vis-

it saying that he should not open relations with Cuba until they improve Human Rights and move toward a

better economy. Maybe the United States will continue relations with Cuba. Until then, the United States still

remains far from being a close ally with Cuba.

Student Spotlight

“Kate Major”

By Elisabeth Hayward and Presley Vann

Today’s Student Spotlight is Kate Major. Kate is in Mrs. Simon’s Prek-4

class and her after school activity is playing the violin. She started play-

ing the violin in January. She plays every Thursday for about an hour.

She’s had one performance so far. Her favorite part about the violin is

learning. I hope you enjoyed reading about Kate and her after school ac-

tivity!

Upcoming Movie by Sasha D. & Paige H.

In a world where animals are as evolved as we are comes the movie Zootopia. This movie is

about Judy Hopps, a rabbit with the dreams of becoming a policewoman and moving to the big

city of Zootopia to fulfill her dream. While she does successfully fulfill her dream of becoming a

policewoman, she is overlooked being a rabbit and

gets assigned parking duty instead of exciting police

tasks. However, when Judy takes on a big investigation

about missing civilians, she struggles and gets help

from Nick Wild, a con artist fox that she had seen in the

past. With his help, Judy Hopps tries to solve the mys-

tery and gain some street credit from the other police-

men. It’s a great movie to see with the whole family!

Celebrating Easter

By Aiden Lerma and Garrett Young

Easter is a time of fun and games, but it is also a time to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus

Christ. Lent is hard because we have to give up something we like a lot. Jesus had to suffer even

more by not eating or drinking for 40 days. Since Jesus sacrificed his flesh for us on Good Friday,

we refrain from eating flesh meat in his honor on Fridays. If you are over 14 you should fast. Fast-

ing is giving up something that you like over Lent.

Easter is the end of Lent, and that’s why we celebrate it by playing fun games like egg on

a spoon race and having Easter egg hunts. These games are fun for the whole family! As we said

earlier Lent is not just about fun and games but that doesn’t mean you cannot have fun.

Softball

By: Reis Woods

Softball is one of the many sports at St. Theresa. This is the second year that softball has been

played at St. Theresa. The girls have done very well this season with two homerun hits by Jen-

nifer. All the girls improved greatly at their batting skills which led to three wins. The team

players include: Gabi (first base), Olivia (catcher, first base, third base and outfield), Dani

(pitcher), Jennifer (shortstop), Ella (centerfield), Daniela (catcher), Maria (left field), Fiona

(right field), Nikki (outfield), Bernadette, (outfield) Alondra (outfield), Ninfa (second base), and

Reis (third base, back-up pitcher). Great season, Lady Vikings!
