October 2016
Fellow Lions:
In the past months,
we, at District 4-C4
have made huge
strides in making our service to our
community stronger and wider in
reach, specifically in recruiting new
members, chartering new clubs,
implementing multi-club and district
wide projects that foster a more solid
comradeship and commitment among
our clubs and members. Additionally,
we have several new initiatives that
are underway – district-wide health
fairs, bowling tournament, rigorous
leadership and membership training,
Leos district, etc. All these initiatives
are products of our collaboration within
the district and community partners. I
am happy to hear positive and
encouraging feedback and support
from our district clubs, committees,
and colleagues. And as true-blooded
Lions, these works we have done and
are doing make us not sit still but
propels us more to want to do and
serve more.
One of my favorite quotes is “To the
world you may be one person but to
one person you may be the world.”
We may never know the profound
effect that we may have made on a
person’s life. A kind word, a gentle
touch or a listening ear, better eye-
sight thru our eyeglass project, keep-
ing a youth out of the street and be a
productive citizen, putting a roof over
the head of a homeless veteran, can
mean the world to someone who is
lonely, sick, in pain or hopeless. When
there is a need…there’s a Lion…that’s
what we do… we generously give our
gift of time to make contact, provide
support and encouragement and
perhaps provide humor to make
someone’s day a bit more bearable.
We may be serving for many different
reasons – bringing with us to share life
experiences, skills, compassion,
intellect and financial resources, but
one common denominator among
humanitarian servants such as Lions
is we serve for nothing in return yet we
receive friendship, appreciation and
satisfaction. We do not ask for
accolades nor expect any rewards for
giving our time generously. Yet we
receive the reward lasting friendships
and connections, and comradeship
with our fellow Lions and community
members who we may never have met
otherwise. Lasting friendships, social
activities and fun may be just some of
the unexpected rewards that you gain
from your volunteering experience.

Fellow Lions:
The month of
September leading into
October has been a
busy one. The District Governor team
with members of the Cabinet began its
visitations to the clubs of the district.
It has been very enjoyable to visit the
clubs. We get to sit and talk with the
many Lions who are active in the
district. We get to reacquaint
ourselves with Lions who are active
only within their club. These are good
Lions who do good work within their
own communities but whom you rarely
see at district functions. We also get to
meet the new and prospective Lions
who are joining our family of Lions for
the first time.
Our Lions organization encompasses
all levels of participation. There are
members who choose to support their
club by simply paying their dues. For
whatever reason, they choose not to
attend meetings regularly or they
might come for the occasional
fundraiser or service project. But they
pay their dues to the club and that
helps.
There are members who are active in
their own clubs, regularly attending the
meetings and actively participate in
planning and participating in the club’s
functions. These members raise their
hands when there is a job to be done
or a committee chaired. Then again,
there are the members who reach
beyond their home clubs and become
active at the council, district, multiple
district or even international level.
The Lions Club has something for all
levels of service. When a prospective
member asks how much time will it
take, many of us will say, “Family,
work and religion comes first. Then do
what you can for the Lions.”
Everyone’s situation is different. Life
circumstances can change. One of my
favorite Lions had a change in his life
and had to step away for a few years.
When the time was right, he came
back and he is a fantastic Lion.
When I first became a San Bruno
Lion, I was happy to stay within my
own club but when I became secretary
and was exposed to the Council and
District meetings, I met a whole new
group of people. It was almost like
joining a whole new club! Now that I
have been elected as a vice governor,
I have made many new friends
throughout the State of California and
even the United States. Many of these
new Lions friends I am able to keep in
contact through FaceBook and email
messages. At the USA/Canada Forum
in Omaha, I was even able to offer
advice to a fellow VDG from the
Midwest and he said he felt much
better after commiserating with me
and others.
The truth be told, I am most relaxed
and at ease when I am sitting around
the table or flipping burgers with my
fellow San Bruno Lions. But the
opportunity to serve the district as vice
district governor keeps me invigorated
and I enjoy the challenges that this
position brings.
If you are reading this article, I can
probably guess where you stand in the
continuum of service. As I talk to the
new and prospective Lions, I find
myself wondering and hoping that they
will find service of others as rewarding
as I, and many of you, have.
We are all volunteers and all levels of
service are appreciated. Our goal, if
we are active Lions, is to keep our
members engaged and interested in
the club and its activities. We want all

Dear Lions of District 4-
C4,
Hello Lions Hello!
To start my column off this month, I
would like to ask for all to pray for the
victims of Hurricane Matthew. I find it
devastating the deaths and destruction
that has occurred. It’s a Level 4
Hurricane – the worst hurricane since
2004. LCIF is mobilizing and sending
grants.
Go SF Giants!!! What a well-played
game! Wow, what
determination! They certainly played
as a well-oiled team; just like Lions
Team District 4c4. We work hard
together, play hard, and serve our
community together.
We had a great turnout at the
September 29th ongoing training at
Parkside School. Many excited and
trained Lions showed up to improve
their skills, asked questions and gave
insight to other Lions. How exciting to
exchange ideas on leadership and
opportunities in serving our
community. We Serve. We Roar
Together!!! I walked between the
various classes and was impressed
with the atmosphere of Lions learning
and sharing. We are a well-oiled
team.
The District visitations are in full
swing. The District Governor and his
cabinet has visited 12 clubs, with the
DG Rod inducting new members at
almost every club!
Some dates for your calendar:
October 9th, Mission Blue is the Rocky
Lombardi much looked
forward to wine tasting and hors
d’oeuvres event at Mission Blue
Center. October 28-30, DoubleTree
Hotel in Burlingame. I invite each of
you to attend the Council of
Governors. Come experience
classes and the hospitality suites in
the early evening. I am looking
forward to spending time with the MD-
4 Council of California DGs, 1st and
my council of 2nd VDGs. It’s a great
time for us to share idea,
experiences and gain insights on
serving our community. Yes, our
district is hosting this event. November
5th, Cabinet meeting, St. Anne of the
Sunset Church, Save the Date!
Didn’t we all have fun on Saturday at
the first District Picnic Appreciation
Day at San Bruno Park. Thank you to
our Lions and DG Rod for this
inaugural event. We all had fun
laughing, eating and playing together.
Weren’t the games fun!!
Please remember to Just Ask One to
join our team, serving our rich and
diverse community. We are a hands
on vibrant team. We are a great
resource. We are fun. We are the
Power of One. Just Ask One, your

The Peninsula Council of Lions Clubs &
San Francisco Coordinating Council of
Lions Clubs both had a meeting in
September. Hosted by the Millbrae
Lions Club, the PCL had their meeting
at the Millbrae Chetcuti Room across
from the library. The PCL Board did a
line dance tribute for the Millbrae
Community Center that burnt down nearby the venue in the summer.
President John had taken a line dance class at the center a few years ago.
The PCL introduced a Guest Speaker
series to their meeting agenda this
season, starting with Aragon HS Leos
President Dina Zheng to talk about
proposed Leos District and District
Leos Conference on September 3.
PDG Lion Ray Rosenthal talked about
Lions Centennial Celebration Event in
March 2017. For the November meeting,
PDG Roger Chinn of Lions Veterans
Charities is invited to talk about a
special homeless veterans housing
project. The Guest Speaker Series will
feature two guest speakers. The
second guest speaker for
November will be determined at next
PCL Board meeting.
Hosted by SF Supreme Lions Club, the
SFCCL had their meeting at Ledu
Restaurant in Pacifica.
The SFCCL meeting was a traditional
agenda with LCIF Coordinator PDG Esther
Lee advising clubs that the contributing
donations to
LCIF of $20, $50, $100 now count for the
Melvin Jones Fellowship. In the past they did
not count. PDG Esther is promoting the
100% District participation, where every club
member donates at least $20. A contributing
member gets a nice lapel pin for their
contribution. A club gets a patch and chevron
for having 100% contributions by their members.

International President’s October Message...
The Meaning of Lions—Same Today as Before
The pages of LION Magazine during the
early years of Lions were filled with stories
such as “The Purpose of Lions,”
“The Meaning of Lionism” and “The Value of
Lions.” A businessman’s club dedicated to
service was still a novel concept, and it was as if Lions had
to convince themselves that they were on the right track. The
uncertainty led Lions to question whether Lions Clubs would
even survive. “During my lifetime I have seen organizations
formed with the highest ideals flourish for a time, then drop
into comparative unimportance. Will that be the fate of
Lionism? I hope not,” wrote District Governor A. Baker of
Cheyenne, Wyoming, in January 1922.
But Lions stayed the course. They stuck with service.
“Show me a club that simply meets and eats, and I will show
you a club that has failed to respond to the call of service… “
- PIP Irving Camp, 1927
Fellowship was part of membership. But service
was paramount. “Activities Make the Club” was
the headline for a column in 1927 by Internation-
al President Irving Camp of Johnstown,
Pennsylvania. “Show me a club that simply
meets and eats, and I will show you a club that
has failed to respond to the call of service as
invited in the very principles of our great,
unselfish organization,” he wrote.
Rapidly approaching our Centennial in 2017, we
now know that our forebears were right. Service
is what makes a Lion. It’s what we do. It’s who
we are. That has never been more evident than
over the past couple of years. We set a goal to
serve 100 million people by June 30, 2018,
through the Centennial Service Challenge. We
asked Lions to hold youth, vision, hunger and
environmental projects.
We wondered whether we’d reach the goal
because clubs reported serving 8 million people
annually to Lions Clubs International (but we
knew the true figure was higher). I’m elated to tell
you that we recently reached our goal of serving
100 million people. Take pride in being part of an
association that lives up to its amazing ideals
and that sets goals and exceeds them.
We have so much more we can achieve. There
are more people who need us, more
opportunities to make a difference and new
mountains to climb. Together we can reach new
heights in service. So keep serving!

PDG George Habeeb 99th Birthday Party...
By: Lion John Gill, District Bulletin Editor
As Lions Clubs International
gets ready to celebrate 100
years of Lionism, our District
is privileged to have a Lion
still serving at the ripe young
age of 99. His club, the
Millbrae Lions Club, honored
Past District Governor George Habeeb with a Birthday
party celebrating his birthday and 55 years of service
as a Lion. Visiting
Dignitaries included ID
Howard Hudson, State
Senator Jerry Hill, and lead-
ership from Lions Project for
Canine Companions Inc.
Over 200 Lions and guests
came to honor PDG George. At the event, PDG
George was honored with an
award from LPCCI for
outstanding service to them.
During his 55 years of
service in Lionism, PDG
George has been honored
with a MD4 Excellence Award, District Lion of the Year,
and Lions Clubs International Ambassador of Goodwill
Award. PDG George is active in attendance at Lions
events in our District and has long served as our
District Chaplain. On a display table were scrapbooks
featuring memories of PDG George’s year as DG and
some of his past awards in Lionism.
District Appreciation Picnic, Garage Sales….
By: Lion John Gill, District Bulletin Editor
On October 1, our District had a
free picnic for all Lions and
family of our District to engage in
fellowship and good food. It was
also a day that several
Lions clubs had events going.
Foster City LC was doing their
annual garage sale to support CORA, a charity that supports
victims of relationship abuse. Daly City Host LC had their
annual rummage sale to support
White Cane. Pacifica LC was
serving at a Diabetes walk in SF.
I attended the District picnic
rather late, because I was visiting
Foster City LC’s annual garage
sale. I have found their garage sales to always have some-
thing that is cool to buy. This year,
I found a beautiful picture of the
Foster City Recreation Center &
Shell Blvd with the Central Lake in
the background. It hangs on my
office wall now. I learned that the
member that donated the picture
was dying of cancer but soon after I bought the picture, she
fully recovered and is in remission.
Congratulations! I was sad to learn a
week later that a past SFCCL leader
wasn’t so lucky with her life-threatening
cancer. Immediate Past President Lion
Jayne Leon passed away 9 days after
that garage sale. Unlike the Foster City Lion,
Jayne’s cancer was not known until
it was too late. Her sunshine report
will be in our next bulletin. Her
visitation is on November 4 with
burial and celebration of life on
November 5. Stay tuned to the
Thread for details.
The Picnic featured games along with a buffet including a pig,
fruit salad, Chinese cuisine, and bbq oysters. Visiting
dignitaries included ID Howard Hudson and his wife. A swarm
of yellow jackets guarded the pig, but brave Lions used
precision skill to retrieve the meat without getting stung. As it
was open to family to come, I brought my yellow lab, Pearl, to
the party. A few of my fellow Lions enjoyed walking her around
while I dined on the cuisine. She loves being around people.
She also visited the garage sale.

Lions Code of Ethics & Objectives
Ethics
TO SHOW my faith in the worthiness of my vocation by industrious application to
the end that I may merit a reputation for quality of service.
TO SEEK success and to demand all fair remuneration or profit as my just due, but
to accept no profit or success at the price of my
own self respect lost because of unfair advantage
taken or because of questionable acts on my part.
TO REMEMBER that in building up my business it is
not necessary to tear down another’s; to be loyal to
my clients or customer and true to myself.
WHENEVER a doubt arises as to the right or ethics
of my positions or actions towards my fellow man,
to resolve such doubt against myself.
TO HOLD friendship as an end and not as a means. To hold that true friendship
exists not on account of the service performed by one another, but that true friend-

destroy.
