Liturgical Calendar, Mass Intentions, and Readings From the Pastor’s Desk The Nineteenth Sunday
in Ordinary Time
August 9, 2020
Rembrandt
Dear Brothers and Sisters in the
Lord,
Today our Church celebrates the
Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time.
As we continue to deal with the new
normal of Covid-19, unfortunately, a
number of parish events has had to
be postponed or cancelled.
Consequently, we are planning and
scheduling a number of Masses of
Christian Burial and other sacraments
for future dates, but we have already
celebrated the Rites of Christian
Burial for most of these individuals
and their loved ones. Therefore, these
celebrations will be designated as
memorial Masses when finally
scheduled. Also, we have a number
of Baptisms and First Holy
Communions that we are scheduling
for future dates. Please note, we can
always celebrate the Sacrament of the
Sick and the Sacrament of
Reconciliation at any time; please call
the parish office to schedule an
appointment for these sacraments.
Our nation is preparing for an
upcoming election. As Americans
and as Catholics, we all have a
responsibility to participate as fully as
possible in all elections as we are able.
Are you registered to VOTE? Have
you updated your home address with
the Board of Elections? Are you
aware of the issues we are being
asked to vote on? For your
convenience, every Sunday after each
Mass, there are individuals available
in the Fellowship Room to assist with
voter registration and to answer any
questions you may have regarding the
upcoming election. There are also
registration forms available on the
ushers’ table and online at https://
votehamiltoncountyohio.gov/voting-
options/mail/

Your Prayer Can Unite the World
Now, more than ever, the world needs Christians united in prayer.
What might happen if every Catholic in the Archdiocese of
Cincinnati would pray just one minute more than they already do,
every day, for the specific intention of peace, justice and goodwill?
There’s no better time to start this life-changing habit Please: (1)
visit www.PrayAMinute.com to commit to praying one minute or more every day from
now until January 1 specifically for the intention of peace, justice and goodwill in our
country; and (2) share this opportunity for spiritual renewal with your friends and family
members and on your social media networks. United in prayer, we can change the world!

Father of goodness and love, hear our prayers for the sick members of our
community and for all who are in need. Amid mental and physical suffering may
they find consolation in your healing presence. Show your mercy as you close
wounds, cure illness, make broken bodies whole and free downcast spirits. May
these special people find lasting health and deliverance, and so join us in thanking
you for all your gifts. We ask this through the Lord Jesus who healed those who
believed. Amen.

Prayer for Vocations
Almighty Father: You have created
for us some definite purpose. Grant
us the grace to know the path You
have planned for us in this life and
to respond with a generous “Yes.”
Make our archdiocese, parishes,
homes and hearts fruitful ground for
Your gift of vocations. May our
young people respond to Your call
with courage and zeal. Stir among
our men a desire and the strength to
be good and holy priests. Bless us
with consecrated religious and those
called to a chaste single life,
permanent deacons, and faithful
husbands and wives, who are a sign
of Christ’s love for His Church. We
commend our prayer for vocations
to You, Father, through the
intercession of Mary our Mother, in

Archbishop Schnurr has written a

Wylie Gene Howell: An Extraordinary Life (February 7, 1950—July 13, 2020)
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on
there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will
give me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing. 2
Timothy 4:7-8
God certainly smiled on us when he brought Mr. Wylie G. Howell to the
doors of St. Joseph Church over thirty years ago! Through his music and by
his steadfast example, he gave each of us the tools to live a better and more
purposeful life in service to the Lord. He was the true embodiment of what it
means to love the Lord, love his fellow man, and most importantly, to use his
earthly gifts to make the world a better, brighter, and more beautiful place. Of
course, he was one in million and irreplaceable in every sense of the word; yet
his story, his legacy, his music, and his brilliance will live on in our hearts as we
move forward in these challenging days.
In the spirit of preserving the special moments of his life, we would like you—his parish family, friends,
colleagues, and those whose lives have been touched through his musical gifts and generosity of spirit—to offer
your thoughts about this remarkable man. What he meant to you, what his music meant to you, how he helped you
or taught you, a wonderful moment in time spent with him, or photos are those reflections we would like you to
share with us. In this way, we can compile his life story beyond just dates and data, which we hope to collect for a
future memoir for us all. You may send your thoughts through (1) email at [email protected]; (2)
mail to the parish office at 745 Ezzard Charles Drive, Cincinnati, Ohio 45203; or (3) put your note in the
collection basket at church. Thank you for helping us with this endeavor. If you have any questions, please call the
parish office. (513) 381-4526.
