Questions of the Week Dec. 13

    We are called.

Question for Children: What do you think it was like for the people in today's Gospel to be called by Jesus? What did they have to give up in order to follow him? Question for Youth: At the start of Jesus' ministry, Jesus invites peo-ple to "believe in the Good News." What are some ways that you could be more open to the truth and challenge contained within the Gospels? Question for Adults: If someone asked you, "To what work has Jesus called you?" how would you answer?

  • Shepherd’s Call

As I write this anticipating “Gaudete” or “Rejoice” Sunday, I call to mind the carol, “Lo How a Rose E’er Bloom-ing.” In truth, it also makes me think of the roses that Juan Diego gathered out of season on the hill at Tepeyac (gift and sign from Our Lady of Guadalupe). There is a beautiful contrast at work. Winter is lifeless, yet in its midst a rose is in bloom. It speaks of Christmas night, yes night, yet evokes a sense of light. This is Jesus, the light that is coming into the world. This is Christian hope, calling us forward amid our present circumstances. I had sung the first two verses of the carol every year as part of the Athenaeum Chorale during my five years re-siding in seminary. It is a shame that I only now looked up the third verse: “True man, yet very God, from sin and death come save us, and share our every load.” Let that stay with you this week: Jesus, very God, wants to share your every load.

Hospitality is an important Christian virtue. With smaller gatherings on account of the pandemic, I expect it has been exercised differently this year, but I have no doubt that it is alive among the faithful of our parishes. As an exercise of Christian hospitality, I will have a seminarian with the Archdiocese of Miami with me for three weeks of his Christmas holiday. He has friends who had been seminarians for our archdiocese. His family is in Vene-zuela, so he’s unable to be with them. I ask that you receive him well along with me when he arrives on Decem-ber 21.

This Thursday is a night of praise and worship at St. Peter’s. During this hectic and confusing time, take an hour, 75 minutes, to rest with the Lord.

    Jesus is our hope!

MAKE A DIFFERENCE, RETIREMENT FUND FOR THE RELIGIOUS - “Every dollar makes a differ-ence in covering our expenses,” says a Trappist abbot. Hundreds of US religious communities struggle to provide for aging members because most senior Catholic sisters, brothers and religious order priests served for little pay. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious helps these communities bridge the gap, offering support for medications, nursing care and other necessities. Please be generous.

9 Months In the Womb With Christ - December 13 - Week 37 Mary’s body is flooding Jesus with antibodies this week as he gets ready for the big day. These will

support his natural immune system for most of the first year of life outside the womb. Jesus of the

    womb, Hear our prayers!
