It did matter. It does matter….
A certain king was to visit a village under his rule and the villagers decided to contribute, a
jar of wine from each man, for the royal feast. All the wine was to be poured into a big
barrel from which it would be served. One man thought to himself: With all the men in the
village each pouring a jar of wine into the barrel, what difference would it make if I poured
in a jar of water and saved my wine. A jar of water among so much wine would hardly
make any difference. Unfortunately, he was not the only man in the village who thought
that way. When the king arrived and the barrel of wine was ready to be served, it was
discovered to be full of water and very little wine. Many other men in the village too had
contributed water instead of wine, thinking that it did not matter, since other people’s con-
tributions would make up for their not contributing. It did matter. It does matter.
Our God is a personal God who is concerned about each and every one and personally
takes care of His people. He is a benevolent Father - holding us in the palm of His hand
and caring for the needs of His children and planning a future for each one. The Bible
presents an image of God as a father who takes care of his children. His concern is be-
yond everything we as human persons can imagine. The readings of today invite us to
have proper priorities in our lives and invite us to place our trust in God. We are called
upon to seek what is above, namely, the values of God, to value ourselves by our interior
self and not by the external material goods. We are measured by not what we own but by
what we share and by the opportunity we have to grow in love.
Here Jesus is explaining His point by telling them the story of the rich fool who was totally
caught up with material things. The rich man in the story was a fool not because he was
wealthy but because he thought that he could guarantee his own personal security
through the hoarding of his harvest without placing his trust in God. This man had wrong
priorities. The first was that he didn’t see beyond himself. His plan of life was a constant
focus of me and me alone. He didn’t go beyond himself to look towards the well-being of
his neighbours and share with those less fortunate. He was extremely selfish. The man’s
second wrong priority was that he didn’t see beyond this world. His whole basis of securi-
ty was his wealth. For him his money and possessions were everything and considered to
prepare well for his own future needs. Real wealth and salvation rest in God and in the
teaching of Jesus, who is fully a revelation of God. Ultimately it is all a matter of grace and
not a matter of storing up wealth and possession for the future.
Blessings,
Fr. Dantus Thottathil.

ENTRANCE HYMN GATHER US IN Here in this place, new light is streaming, now is the darkness, vanished away, See, in this space, our fears and our dreamings, brought here to you in the light of this day. Gather us in the lost and forsaken, Gather us in the blind and the lame; Call to us now, and we shall awaken, we shall arise at the sound of our name. We are the young, our lives are a myst’ry, we are the old who yearn for your face, We have been sung throughout all of hist’ry, called to be light to the whole human race. Gather us in the rich and the haughty, Gather us in the proud and the strong; Give us a heart so meek and so lowly, give us the courage to enter the song. Here we will take the wine and the water, here we will take the bread of new birth, Here you shall call your sons and your daughters, call us anew to be salt for the earth. Give us to drink the wine of compassion, Give us to eat the bread that is you; Nourish us well, and teach us to fashion, lives that are holy and hearts that are true. Not in the dark of the buildings confining, not in some heaven, light years away, but here in this place, the new light is shining, now is the Kingdom now is the day. Gather us in and hold us forever, Gather us in and make us your own; Gather us in all peoples together, fire of love in our flesh and our bone.

QUOTE OF THE DAY:
We come with nothing,
we go with nothing,
but one great thing we can
achieve in our beautiful life
is … A little remembrance

a small place in
someone’s Heart.
STEWARDSHIP: August 4, 2019: 18th Sunday of Ordinary Time “Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.” (Luke 12:15) The Gospel message today is contrary to our modern culture where advertising continually tries to convince us that our value lies in the things we possess. Jesus showed us that our true value lies in the way we live our lives. He challenges us to not hoard material possessions, but rather to live a grateful and generous lifestyle and become more “other-centered” and less “self-centered.”

This National Theme for Discernment is inspired by the voices of the
People of God who shared a passion for participating in the missionary
nature of the Church and desire stronger support, involvement and for-
mation among all the baptised who make up the Church. The data also
identified the need to reach out and communicate more effectively and
to find new ways of living and proclaiming the Gospel in Australia to-
day. There was a call for the strengthening of leadership and ministries
in parishes and schools, training to equip leaders for ministry, pastoral
support for various groups within parish and faith communities, and a
desire for a unified voice in engaging social issues such as life and reli-
gious freedom.
