THE TEMPTATION TO ACQUIRE MORE: The feeling of discontent and restlessness that afflicts us because we have looked to consumerism as a path to happiness and self-worth has been called 'affluenza'. Although the word is new, the situation affluenza describes is perennial. At its root is one of the 'capital sins' identified by the Christian tradition, namely, greed. So, Jesus warns us to “beware of all covetousness; for a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions”. The Desert Fathers recognized that greed created false needs, thus leading to discontentment and restlessness, and modern advertisements rely on this weakness to tempt us to buy more. When we succumb, our hope for salvation from our current dis-ease is mistakenly placed in a lesser good. Hence Saint Paul called greed an “idolatry” because no temporal good can ever satisfy our fundamental longing for God, for whom our hearts are made, and in whom we find our rest. Today's readings, then, challenge us to examine whether we share our 'inheritance' with our brethren who are in need, for the poor, unlike those who are influenced by modern marketing, have genuine material needs. Excerpt from a homily by Fr. Lawrence Lew OP. QUOTE: When someone steals another's clothes, we call them a thief. Should we not give the same name to one who could clothe the naked and does not? The bread in your cupboard belongs to the hungry; the coat unused in your closet belongs to the one who needs it; the shoes rotting in your closet belong to the one who has no shoes; the money which you hoard up belongs to the poor. St. Basil the Great, Bishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia (330-379). TO REANIMATE OUR DESIRE: Our life is a journey that makes sense only on the supposition that we are going somewhere. When it is difficult to keep moving ahead, we need to reanimate our desire. Prayer operates as a function of our journey toward God. It is successful when it makes us want to continue the journey with greater urgency than before. If it makes us want to stop by the roadside for a picnic and a sleep in the sun, it is not prayer but delusion. Toward God, The Ancient Wisdom of Western Prayer by Michael Casey OCD.

haste to help me! You are my rescuer, my help; O Lord, do not delay.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:

In every age, O Lord, You have been our refuge.

1. You turn men back into dust and say: ‘Go back, sons of men.’ To Your

eyes a thousand years are like yesterday, come and gone, no more

than a watch in the night.

2. You sweep men away like a dream, like grass which springs up in the

morning. In the morning it springs up and flowers: by evening it

withers and fades.

3. Make us know the shortness of our life that we may gain wisdom of

heart. Lord, relent! Is Your anger for ever? Show pity to Your servants.

4. In the morning, fill us with Your love; we shall exult and rejoice all our

days. Let the favour of the Lord be upon us: give success to the work

of our hands.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: Alleluia, alleluia!

Happy the poor in spirit; the Kingdom of

Heaven is theirs! Alleluia!

COMMUNION ANTIPHON: You have given

us, O Lord, bread from Heaven, endowed with

all delights and sweetness in every taste.

READINGS FOR NEXT SUNDAY:

19th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year C):

Wisdom 18:6-9; Hebrews 11:1-2, 8-19; Luke 12:32-48.

THE TEMPTATION TO ACQUIRE MORE: The feeling of discontent and restlessness that

afflicts us because we have looked to consumerism as a path to happiness and self-worth has been

called 'affluenza'. Although the word is new, the situation affluenza describes is perennial. At its

mistakenly placed in a lesser good. Hence Saint Paul called greed an “idolatry” because no temporal

good can ever satisfy our fundamental longing for God, for whom our hearts are made, and in

whom we find our rest.

DIAL 7 FOR HEAVEN What is important when it comes to prayer? The best prayer consists of few points. Some people compare this with how one uses a telephone, because you dial a number and then a person answers. • The 1st step is to come close to God, in His presence. • The 2nd step is to admit your sins. • The 3rd step is to forgive everyone. • The 4th step is to renounce all sins. • The 5th step is to accept your cross. • The 6th step is to accept the Holy Spirit because once we renounce sin, we are empty and have to be filled with something. • The 7th step is to say to God, “Thank You”.
