After repeated com-plaintsby residents, Corporationworkers have started the workof reducing the height of slabscovering storm water drainsin front of residences onHabibullah Road, T. Nagar.

The old slabs cover-ing thedrains had been replaced withnew readymade slabs which

Corporation reducing height ofdrain slabs

were thicker and thus createdproblems.

These slabs were almost afoot above the road in front ofentrances of many houses andapartment complexes makingit difficult for residents to movetheir vehicles in and out of theircompounds. Some residentshad created slopes on both

sides of the raised slabs usingrubble to move their vehiclesbut they soon got scattered.

The workers are nowchipping away a portion of thetop of the slabs to reduce theheight and cementing the top.Slopes are also being made toenable smooth movement ofvehicles across the slabs.

NO HOLDS BARRED

Tamil Cinema Music - 27A man of much charm, wit and humour, Maharajapuram

Viswanatha Iyer faced the wrath of his orthodox, rigidlytradition-bound Brahmin community, especially in his home-town of temples, Kumbakonam, for acting in a movie, particu-larly with K. B. Sundarambal. But he was one who never battedan eyelid in breaking rules and taboos and kicking at sacredcows and bulls!

(This writer had the pleasure and privilege of knowing thegreat man well in spite of the vast difference in age betweenthem, and enjoyed his love and affection. He had an inexhaust-ible fund of ‘blue’ jokes, risqué anecdotes and tales about menand women of his times and chimes. Sadly most of them areunprintable even in this permissive age!)

Kalki described him as ‘ Maharagapuram’ (because he sangall ragas so brilliantly) and ‘Sangeetha Bhoop-pathi’. (One ofIyer’s titles was ‘Sangeetha Bhoopathi’ and his penchant formixing the Hindustani raga ‘Bhoop’ with the Carnatic raga‘Mohanam’ inspired Kalki to give him the amended title!)

During the making of ‘Nandanar’, the director M. L. Tandonfaced a delicate and embarrassing situation. In a scene, theBrahmin landowner Vedhiyar realizes that his low-born farm-hand, Nandan (KBS), is indeed a Lord Nataraja-blessed soul.By way of making amends for the past ill-treatment of hisfarmhand, he has to fall at his feet in obeisance and apology. Now Iyer was a Brahmin and KBS hailed from a lowbornobscure background. KBS felt upset and did not want Iyer tofall at her feet. But it was necessary for the story and thereseemed no way out.

Though he had never heard of Alfred Hitchcock at that time,Iyer felt like his famous line, ‘It’s only a movie, Ingrid [Bergman]!’And he agreed to do the scene. He looked at KBS as a greatfellow musician and the incarnation of Goddess Saraswathi!Tandon was a happy man when the two fell at each other’s feetby turn!

Regretfully, ‘Nandanar’ failed at the box office. Kalki, in afamous review in ‘Ananda Vikatan’, tore it to bits and pieces. He wrote that a buffalo which appeared in the movie actedbetter than everyone else!

For some uncomplimentary reasons, the film’s negative wasdestroyed in a mysterious fire. Today there is no trace of thishistoric film except a few stills, a few 78-rpm gramophonerecords of songs by Maharajapuram which are preserved byhis descendents and some collectors. What remain still arefond but fast-fading memories of old-timers still around afterseventy-plus long years.

(His son Maharajapuram Santhanam told this writer thathis father invested his income of Rs. 3000 from this movie inthe purchase of a house in Kumbakonam. Over the years, itsvalue grew by leaps and bounds and more. “One of the few wisethings my father did in his life!”, Santhanam wisecracked withglee.)

The story of Nandanar, as immortalised by GopalakrishnaBharathi, was filmed thrice, each time with a few Carnaticmusic greats.

Of all the silent and talking film versions of the GopalakrishnaBharathiar’s immortal musical ‘Nandan Charitram,’ the mostsuccessful one was the S. S. Vasan-Gemini Studios productionof 1943, ‘Nandanar’. The well-known classical Carnatic musi-cian and one of the pillars of the Thamizh Isai Movement, andsometime Tamil movie star, M. M. Dhandapani Desikar, played the lead role of the ‘Lord Nataraja- devotee’. (All aboutthe colourful Dhandapani Desikar, whom this writer knew well, later in a separate article!)

‘Murugadasa’ (Muthuswami Iyer), one of the pioneers ofTamil Cinema, directed ‘Nandanar’. He had begun his life asreporter in the now defunct Madras city eveninger ‘ The Mail’,for which he wrote film reviews. Drawn to the medium ofcinema, he gave up his job and promoted a short-lived monthly‘Sound And Shadow’ in the early 1930s. It was one of the earlymovie magazines in English in Madras and created muchimpact in those days. (To be continued)

“Brick-dropping”Being something of an amateur brick dropper of local

eminence, I had done a little research in this enviable fieldand felt eclipsed by the greats of history.

We have heard about how Columbus, being a little highthanks to the sendoff party and a little low on geography, went West in search of India (when he should have sailedEast) and landed in America. (We are getting near the brick,smoke-screened by the historians.) Columbus took onelook at the faces crowding the beach and his face blanched. He didn’t know what to say to hide his chagrin and said thefirst thing that occurred to him “Howdy!” with which hegreeted the Red Indian Chief. The brick was on the beach, for, the Chief thought he was called “Rowdy” by thiswretched paleface and thus ensued the pleasurable pastimeof scalping and all those brave deeds that have made JohnWayne &Co household names.

The completeness of the brick in this case is evident whenwe see that neither Columbus nor the Chief knew a wordof English (if “Howdy” is English!).

Another famous brick-dropping is allegedly attributed tothe French Queen Marie Antoinette. Upon learning thatthe peasants had no bread to eat, the Queen is credited withthe brick, “Then let them eat cake!” The brick was tooheavy for the famished ears and the monarch’s headdropped into the basket under the guillotine. Those twobricks built a new world.

The sizeable pile of my personal bricks have, instead ofbuilding anything, demolished my ego. Being the first lawyerin the family - a clan of many branches - I saw the legalrainbow like a pronounced red carpet laid out for me. On atrain journey, I got chummy with a chap who shared withme a common strain of selective insomnia, inability to sleepon a train. We got talking and soon what he didn’t knowabout my practice wasn’t worth knowing. I was going tomove bail the next day at the Madras Vacation Court andgenerally let go about Vacation Judges. “They usually putthe dumbest chaps as Vacation Judges,” I joked.

“Not necessarily”, my fellow insomniac said.“You seem to know some vacation judges.”“Yes, I am one... I am going to Ernakulam...as vacation

judge.”“Sir, I mean My Lord, I mean...”, my tongue went on a

lightning strike in protest against the scarcity of greymatter in the headquarters. I expected the train to stop atthe heaviness of the brick.

I have got the bright idea from somewhere, or maybe it’soriginal, that if you have a perfectly rotten case to argue, there is no sense in doing it with a long face. So, in an accidentcase appeal where my fellow’s vehicle had killed an old man,I decided to joke my opening through, “My Lords, it is mysingular misfortune to appear for owners of vehicles whoare killers,” I said with the brightest smile. The two ‘MyLords’ appeared to have been hit by a brick. They whisperedto each other while I shrivelled in my shoes. I looked aroundat my learned friends. All were smiling. Then came the boltfrom the bench: “What do you mean, ‘misfortune’?” I had tohem and haw for a full five minutes to get the choicewarning, “Think before you speak.” The Lords took it intotheir heads that I was having a dig at them for being kindto the accident victims. That brick nearly ended up as myprofessional tombstone.

Tomorrow to fresh fields of clay for bricks anew.

Whose life is it anyway?

By S. VidyaakarWith every step forward in

technology, we are taking athousand steps backward inhumanity. No matter howmuch progress the worldmakes, it is still the Stone Agefor the poor and the mentallyill.

Kumar, aged about 45 years, had been in iron chains for aquarter of his life. This is howhe was found on Sept. 28 byPatrick, a social worker fromUdavum Karangal, on VelloreHigh Road, Thurinjapuram. The CB CID Sub-InspectorDoss of Thiruvannamalai hadreferred Kumar to Patrick.

Kumar was set free from theiron chains once he was insideUdavum Karangal’s abode inThiruvannamalai and liber-ated from his physical trauma. After counseling, he was ableto give his name and details ofhis parents.

He is from EechankuppamVillage, near Kolathur and hisparents Krishnan andRangammal lived there. Hewas under treatment for men-tal illness in CMC, Vellore. After his parents’ death, a lo-cal rice mill owner from hisvillage had chained him for notdoing any work and to prevent

him from running away fromthe village.

Doctors have assessedKumar to be schizophrenic.

Do we need to chain someonewho is mentally ill? Is this theprogress psychiatry hasmade? Can’t one see there is ahuman being hidden under thebizarre behavior of a mentallyill person? It can happen to youor me.

There is a percentile increasein the number of mentally illand depressed persons due tothe changing dynamics of soci-ety and the pressures thatcome along with it.

I question the attitude of thegeneral public who turn a blindeye to the mentally ill.

Oct. 10 is marked as WorldMental Health Day with semi-nars and speeches all over theglobe. Though we talk big thingsabout mental health and theneed to treat the affected in anunderstanding way, this inhu-man condition persists in frontof our eyes, or should I say ourseeing blind eyes. After all, whose life is it anyway?

NO HOLDS BARRED

A fellow by name Hieun Tsang awoke one morning with feet asitchy as the dickens. His father, a pedagogue, which in ancientChina meant a foot-doctor, assured the itchy son that a little walkwould cure him instantly. So Hieun took a little walk and he couldn’tstop for fear that it would return the moment he stopped for a greentea. He walked, walked and walked and arrived in India.

He was surprised that noone had asked him for his passport orvisa or ‘P’ form, or tapped his valise to see if there was a false bottomcontaining opium. That was the golden age of tourism, withoutanyone knowing that there was such a thing as ‘tourism’.

There wasn’t much by way of ruins to be seen in the 7th centurywhen the said Chinaman visited, as the process of man’s destruc-tion of things to provide food for the tourism of the 21st century hadnot been started yet.

Emboldened by Hieun’s long walk, Fahien followed, it is said, though not recorded in books by historians, with a consignment ofopium that gave the ancient Indian a taste for it. That is the genesisof the ‘Opium Act’. Those travellers certainly contributed to thewelfare of the people they visited, which is more than can be saidof the present visitors.

Keats, in his short life, said that ‘heard melodies are sweet butthose unheard are sweeter still’. Things seen are good but thoseunseen are better, and that’s the pull of tourism, of course aided bythe imagination of copywriters employed by the promoters. Somechauvinistic Roman even went to the extent of saying “See Romeand then die.” A wrong thing to say to promote tourism, but beinga fascist, anything he says isn’t sensible. What I say is that faraway fields look greener and if you don’t want to be disillusioned, youhad better stick to your easy chair and read a travelogue.

Vedanthangal, the bird sanctuary just 53 miles by road fromChennai, is listed as a tourist attraction but, in my 65-plus yearshere, all I had seen were some crows and sparrows who visit us.Cousin Mohan drove us to the lake, the islands in the middle of whichallegedly house an avian U.N.O. The lake looked like polished glass;not a ruffle on its surface. What’s more, no dashed birds, or if therewere any, they must have been at the bottom of the lake with O2tanks strapped to their backs. “Something wrong”, said cousinMohan, who is famous for prize understatements. “You betcher”,I broke into American. When angry, I always do.

We asked the sleeping warden where the hell the birds were. Hesaid, “Must have got tired of seeing so many people; they’re alsotourists...the flying itch must have done it”. That’s bird brain foryou.

Our next sally was to Thirukazhukundram, the hilltop templewhere a couple of birds (really God and His wife) appeared likeclockwork at noon for food, or so said the government handout, forwhich we fell. After an endless climb of a handed thousand steps orperhaps a million, we waited in vain for the proxy Gods in avian formto show up. “That’s the second time birds have given us the slip. These things of the air are bad for tourism... Look at the pilots...theyhave practically killed tourism”, I observed learnedly, to which wifesaid, “No wonder with atheists like you around, no decent God willshow Himself”.

Another tourist bubble burst by me was the one about throwinga handkerchief weighted with a stone from ‘Arthur’s Seat’ inMahabaleshwar near Pune. I threw it hoping to see it boomerangand land in my hand as I was told it would. Well, I lost a beautifulhandkerchief and the urge to see any more of the fabled tourist spot. What a fool I was to imagine that there are things like boomerangs. If it’s true, then a speeding arrow and a spoken word can jolly wellcome back, in which case politicians will not have to eat their words. They need to only stand at the door with a bag and collect them.

A real seeker of knowledge wouldn’t gather all that wisdom coopedup in his insular home, reading what So & So wrote. He seeks notonly to relive the past but to see the present and project his mindinto the future of unheard melodies and unseen things. Or am Icreating another bubble of a legendary tourist who puts up with ourvampire mosquitoes, auto dacoits, greedy guides, vacillating laws, snoopy custom hounds and a fellow like me who maintains, “Thereis no place like home!”
