Welcome to The Portico, a locallybased and locally owned start-upcompany, working for local familyand independent businessesthroughout the Malvern Hills District. What better area to start could therebe? Recent National press reportshave placed us amongst some of thetop areas in the UK to both live andwork. We have terrific places, amenities and people. Ourbusinesses have great products andservices to offer. For the past few years, press and televisioncomment has painted a gloomy picture of ourtowns. Much has been made of the impact ofout-of-town retail parks, internet sales andproposed new supermarkets on our localbusiness communities. Upton and Tenbury havebeen blighted by floods. Banks have drasticallyreduced business support. Recession hasdampened spirits.

Here at The Portico we want to bring you theother side of the local story and it certainly isnot all doom and gloom. Throughout thesepages, and in future issues, we will bring toyour door and on-line, successful shops andbusinesses that are not only surviving, butembracing change and fighting back againstthe multi-nationals and internet. The Porticowill bring you news of businesses that havebeen trading for many years, often in the samefamilies. They have witnessed recessions, wars, ill-health and changing times, but stillcontinue to innovate and adapt to meet theircustomer`s needs. In this, our first issue, weproudly feature Cox of Malvern, who celebrate130 years of continuous trading this May.

Alongside them new businesses are openingup, if not daily then weekly, their owners full ofaspiration and ambition to provide newproducts and new services to meet consumerneeds. Traditional businesses that provide foreveryday living, new businesses, new shops, new trends, it is a story of continuallychanging innovation and developmentthroughout the whole area. The Portico willbring them all to you in a new way, combiningtraditional print, internet and social media.

As you read through this magazine, and future issues, you find some new as well as many familiar names. Go towww.theportico.co.uk/malvern and you willfind those same businesses. Search through thecategories, where you will find details ofthemselves, their products, special offers, location, testimonials and much more. Many ofthose same businesses will be offering PorticoLoyalty Card Bonus Points. For the first time, customers will be able to receive loyalty points, using a single card, throughout the entireMalvern Hills District, which covers Upton,Barnards Green, Great Malvern, Malvern Linkand Tenbury. Go to page 20 for details of how toapply for your free Loyalty Card and be given afree entry into our Prize Draw for a Morgan Bike.

Yes, your local businesses are fighting back. They know that the modern consumer requiresproduct information on a 24/7 basis, seeksvalue-for-money and wants to be rewarded fortheir loyalty.

They know that, whatever your needs, theirproducts, knowledge and service can be a matchfor anyone and our task at The Portico is to bringthem all to you under one umbrella.

We think that is a privilege and we can`t wait!

bringing increased commercial awareness and footfall to your door...

festival seasonacross The Malvern Portico District

Malvern Civic Week 2013Malvern Civic Week 2013 is officially 13 –20 July, but as in other years it continuesto be a catalyst to show-case Malvern atits best for far longer than one week! The Malvern Civic Society co-ordinatesCivic Week and organises a number ofkey events during this period.

The Society hopes that these eventswill provide a focus for business andorganisations to add to the programme,to promote themselves and to enhancethe rich and vibrant fabric that isMalvern through activities andopportunities for people from acrossthe area and beyond. The plans for CivicWeek 2013 are still taking shape, butthere is already a range of key-notespeakers, gala concerts, balls, walks, literary events, a carnival processionand much more in the pipe line. Thesociety is encouraging local places ofinterest, often not accessible to thepublic, to open wide their doors andwelcome people to see inside. In thepast this has included the historicbuildings of Malvern St James, thetower of Great Malvern Priory, theMasonic Lodge on Belle Vue Terrace,

Great Malvern Railway Station andmany more. Malvern Civic Week hasbeen hailed as a great example of theCivic Week concept, winning awardsfrom Civic Voice (the national umbrellaorganisation for Local Civic Societies)for the successful and ambitiousprojects undertaken.

Roger Sutton, Chairman of MalvernCivic Society, believes Malvern CivicWeek has great potential for mutualbenefits for local business and eventorganisers to bring to the townsomething unique and inspiring, allowing community to thrive in thecultural heritage, outstanding naturalbeauty and entrepreneurial potential ofthe town, while also having a hugeamount of fun and, maybe, finding out alittle more about the wonderful place inwhich we live or love to visit.

Roger went on to add that in many waysthe concept of Civic Week and thePortico Project stem from the samebelief that ‘together everyone achievesmore’.

For more information on events as they arefinalised in the run up to Civic Week 2013please see:www.malverncivicsociety.org.uk/events_week.htmand take time to indulge in all that is great aboutMalvern!

Make do and mend...Sounds familiar, you may have said it oryour mother did !

Well good news for all those old sofas andchairs. The trend continuing for homeinteriors is to do just that.

Mixing a bit of new luxury with some oldbasics.

This makes a home feel like a home and notsomething straight out of a magazine.

Interior Designer makers have seen asignificant increase in customers wantingto re-vamp something old to go withsomething new.

No longer the throw away society webecame in the 90's, now we want to takegrandma's chair out of the garage and giveit new life, it's not junk it's an heirloom...

The sofa you have had forever it seems, justre-think landfill, yes that's where it goes ifyou don't want it.

Re-upholstery is an option but sometimesnot necessary, a loose cover would do thejob perfectly well. With your seat cushionsrevived and back cushions re-filled this canbe a cheaper option.

Loose covers are practical, easily cleanedand can be made in all sorts of gorgeousand uplifting fabrics.

New scatter cushions can sometimes beenough, just a splash of new colours canchange the whole look of a tired sofa.

There are numerous ways of reviving otherareas of your home. Just look at thingsdifferently and think of what you need to dowith it to make it lovely again, whatever it is.

Go shopping for inspiration from somethingnew, all designs are repeated through thecenturies just altered slightly. A bit of retro inany room looks great.

So mixing old with new is the way to go for theenvironment and for inspiring interior designs.

Embracing this will give your home moreindividuality and a sense of your ownpersonal style, and of course some familyhistory.

This definitely makes life and homes a lotmore interesting.

For more tips on Home Interiors please [email protected] we mayprint some of the tips answered in the nextedition of the magazine.

Malvern Link

always buzzing...

It is no accident that Malvern Link alwaysseems to be buzzing because for localresidents and visitors the Link probablyoffers the widest range of shopping andservices in the Malvern Area. Groceries, butchers, bakers, furniture, beds, carpets, fast food and restaurants, outdoor andhardware supplies, vets, opticians, dentists, banks, Post office and muchmore can all be found here. On nearbyindustrial estates are equally vibrantbusinesses, small and large, and this isalso the home of the famous MorganMotor Company.

Malvern Link has a rich history of suchlong-standing family concerns and somelike Francis of Malvern, and Express TVhave been there for over 50 years.

Currently nearly every shop-front isoccupied. Occupancy rates, indeed aselsewhere throughout our District, hasremained very high during recent difficulttimes. Much credit for this must go to thetenacity and hard work of the familiesinvolved.

Hello, I was born and raised in Malvern, attended SomersPark Primary School, then moved to Dyson Perrins to studymy GCSE`s and A-Levels at Dyson Perrins Sixth form. From6th Form I went on to the University of Portsmouth BusinessSchool, where I gained a BA (Hons) in Business EnterpriseDevelopment.

I have over 10 years of experience in web design, working asa freelance web designer on and off over the last 5 years.

My role at the Portico is to provide a hands-on link with localbusinesses in the Malvern area and the Portico team. I willbe able to use my web-site and social media experience, linked to local and business knowledge to help businessesas much as I can to get the most out of the Portico.

I am particularly excited to see the Loyalty Card scheme growas I think it will really help change customers buying habitsand increase footfall and spending in the local area. Running

an independent family business is extremely hard work andI am looking forward to helping owners and managerscompete against larger chains using all of the tools andbenefits that The Portico can offer.

Being young and enthusiastic, I help bring passion not onlyto the Portico but use my spare time and energy to supportthe Fixvict project. This is a local charity committed toimproving facilities at the Victoria Skate-park in MalvernLink. The current skate-park is below the ideal standardsthat a community as large as Malvern deserves. Our targetis to improve the facilities and make the skate-park safe anduseable all year round, providing a safe haven for localpeople of all ages. I am also part of the Malvern CommunityLink CIC (a Community Interest Company) which will berunning a community event this summer whilst working toimprove the area.

Of great benefit to shoppers in Malvern Link is theplentiful supply of free parking. Two large car parks atVictoria Park, and numerous car parks behind stores andshops provide convenience for friendly local shopping. A number of the shops are also now open on Sundaysand we will make more of this in future issues.

F. L. Cox & Son cele

The Portico is dedicated to bringing younews and details of local family-ownedbusinesses. In this, the first issue, whatbetter way could there be to underline this ethos than bringing you details of Coxof Malvern, who are celebrating 130 yearsof continuous service at their NewtownRoad premises.David and Dianne Cox are the retired senior partners. They arethe third generation to have been involved and still have anactive involvement with the fourth generation, daughter Sam,and son-in-law Peter Lupino.

The business was started in 1883 by David’s grandmother,Florence Louisa Cox. For almost twenty years the premises, mainly a general store, was renowned for selling bedding, haberdashery, flooring and footwear. Typically for those days, the shop was open for long hours, daily and often up to mid-night! In the early 1900’s the trading style gradually changedemphasis and more focus was directed to clothing.

“visiting the shop today, one can feel the tradition of service that has been built up and handed down over the years”

lebrate 130 years...Lechmere Cox, the second generation and owner to become involved, worked in the shop all of his life with thesupport of Annie Donovan, establishing a solid reputationand rapport with customers throughout the area. Tradingwas quite different in those early days. Wartime andDepressions were hard times for many. Lechmere oftenextended credit to local customers, allowing them weeklypayment terms, and generally going the extra mile as hecontinued to build the business.

David joined the business in the 70’s and worked with hisfather until the latter’s death in 1978. At this time he wasjoined by his wife, Dianne and this was followed by aperiod of expansion, taking over and incorporating theshop next door.

Driving onwards with the fourth generation at the helm,Sam and Peter together with their loyal team and with thesupport of David and Dianne are steering the businessforwards.

Visiting the shop today, one can feel the tradition ofservice that has been built up and handed down over theyears. Sam and Peter firmly believe that continuedsuccess will be based on a policy of blending newproducts, interesting and quality choices with traditionalvalues. Stock for both the Womenswear and Mensweardepartments is sourced from leading British andContinental manufacturers with a wide variety of leading

brands on display. Customer knowledge, quality fabrics, great styling and value-for-money provide strongguidelines to the stocking policy. The premises aresurprisingly spacious, and display a great range of formaland casual wear for all occasions.

The lower floor level houses the highly successful men’shirewear department. This department has evolved andexpanded over the years and now offers formal weddingand evening hire with complementing waistcoats andaccessories. Customers are able to discuss theirrequirements and then try garments on before reserving, assuring that they will look their best on the special day.

Great attention is given to personal service, and it is veryevident that customer satisfaction is the main aim ofeveryone involved throughout the shop. That ethos hashelped them to survive for 130 years and will sustain themas they face the future. The family and all concerned canbe justly proud of their tradition and achievement. Thismonth, Malvern can salute and share their pride.

Upton upon Severn

In Upton things aredefinitely looking up

With a population of around 3000 people,in the past the town has been dubbed“Upton Under Severn” due to low lyingareas flooding which is an unpleasant andsometimes frightening experience.Economic difficulties, bad weather… thereis no doubt things have been difficult hereas they have throughout the country overrecent years, but in Upton things aredefinitely looking up.

The town’s new flood defences werecompleted last year and they have alreadyproven successful, which is great news. With recent improvements to thepavements and main road through thetown, business owners are finally able tolook forward to the Festival Season whichstarts this month and hopefully, somebetter weather for everyone.

Hello. I have lived in the small village of Uckinghall, just outside Upton on Severn, since 2001 when we relocated due to myhusband’s job changing. I shop locally, eat out locally and put simply, enjoy living here!

Prior to relocating to Worcestershire I worked for almost twenty years at Olympus KeyMed based in Essex. I started inCustomer Service and for the last decade, ran the HR department, which was very demanding but often rewarding.

In 2010 I launched a website selling high quality children’s clothing. I invested a great deal of time and a significant amountof money in my site and I was very proud of the end result. Whenever I took my products out to Shows, the feedback wasvery positive and sales were good.

Unfortunately, the website attracted very little business. I naively expected clients to find it without considering muchinvestment in marketing, found the small adverts I could afford provided little response and struggled to find technicalsupport from anyone in a language I could understand! Reluctantly, I decided to give up the site.

A year ago, I joined the Portico Project, with particular responsibility for Upton. I genuinely believe we can help drivebusiness and footfall back into the town. I would like to thank those clients who have joined us at the very beginning of thisexciting journey and look forward to welcoming many more!

The town has a fabulous Riverside setting andmany independent shops and businessesoffering good old fashioned service and someunique, truly lovely products. With a variety ofpubs, restaurants and coffee shops, Upton is agreat venue and hosts several major musicfestivals throughout the Summer.

The 28th Jazz Festival is taking place on28th – 30th June 2013 and this year allthe music venues will be located in thetown. Customers will be able to choosea favourite style or use their strollertickets to wander between the venues. There will be Free Parking for TicketHolders on Fish Meadow.

For the first 6 years of his life, Dave lived in Worcester. Whilstthere he attended Worcestershire Technical College, andbecame a firm favourite with the students, if not theauthorities, for regularly getting stuck in the lift after visitingthe dormitories! At that time his nickname was “Tuna” whichreflected his student diet.

Extensive building work made it imperative for Dave to move on. TheCollege librarian, Debbie, lives next door to Alexandra Dunster (the

new owner of Malvern Kitchens) at the Wyche, Malvern, and suggested she might like to offer Dave a home.

Alex had recently lost her own cat, andso, two and a half years ago, saw

the start of a newrelationship.

It was several months before Alex became aware of Dave`swanderlust. One day he followed her, on foot, down to TheWorcestershire Golf Club. Since that day he has not stayed indoorsfrom approximately 7.00am until 10.00pm each day, regardless ofweather, making regular quite daunting journeys. Setting out downthe hill, Dave crosses the Wells Road, follows pathways and fieldsand makes his way to the Golf Course where, as in a previous life, heis loved by the golfers but less so by the authorities! For Dave, it isthen just a short step to the Three Counties Showground. He loves itthere too. His favourite show is the VW Beetle-fest, and he stays forthe whole weekend. Alex says that you always know when he ishome, as he is extremely vocal.

Like most cats of his age, he has used up some of his nine lives.Following a row with a fox it needed all of the skills and care ofthe Masefield Veterinary Team (Barnard’s Green) to save himand get him back to a full life. He likes going there as they

always make a fuss of him.

With the ever-increasing cost of living thesedays, Dave had been looking for a part-time job,

and so he has joined us as our CompetitionMascot.

It is often said that you don’t own a cat, the cat owns you. If an independent attitude and lifestyle are anything

to go by, then this applies to Dave.

THIS MONTH’S CLUES1 Dave’s cat flap needs a new hinge so he will be calling in to a

hardware shop in Upton2 Dave has a visitor and needs some fish for a pie so he is

popping down to Barnards Green3 Dave’s bedroom tv is playing up and a friend has

recommended a shop in Malvern Link4 Dave’s mate has a birthday this month and there is a fun

Barnard’s Green

Barnard’s Green is one of the jewels in Malvern’s crownand is often referred to as theGateway to the Hills.

The broad, traditional High Street isfilled with a high number of proprietor-run independent businesses. In this dayand age it is something of a rarity tostill have a High Street that has abutcher, baker, fishmonger, delicatessen and fresh fruit shop allacross the road from each other, and

owned and staffed by people that knoweach other and their mutual customersby name. Add to that mix anindependent toy shop, sweetie shop, ceramic cafe, high quality card & giftshop, and of course, its very own PostOffice and you can see why local peopleare so loyal to “shopping in the green”.Many visitors express nostalgia andwish that their own High Street had thisvariety of shops!

The Barnards Green Traders Associationhas a motto-“traders serving theircommunity”. that was very evidentwhen last year the tradaers held their“crown the green” to celebrate thequeen`s jubilee, and also lthe freechildrens` puppet theatre showsat Christmas

time. “It is by working together andtrying to make our businesses the bestthat they can be that we will keepbarnards green strong and vibrant” saidJane Knowles of just so. “ we endevourto support the community that supportsus as traders. This year we are planninga Barnards Green Capers Event on 13thJuly as a part of the Malvern Carnival aswell as sending three floats to take partin the carnival procession. we will alsobe holding a “plant a bean in BarnardsGreen” for local school children and a“fun dog show” which will make for funtimes for all. We will bring you moredetails in the next issue. .

After what could only be described as an eventful winter,Spring has finally shown signs of arriving. My large animalcolleagues are still struggling with the fierce lambingconditions and a Fluke outbreak that the damp conditionshave encouraged. On our side of things the improvementin the weather means a change in what our owners dowith their pets.

Our average canine patient spends an uneventful winterhiding next to the fire, the incessant rain preventingmeaningful exercise. With an improvement in theconditions suddenly their owners feel compelled toexplore the excellent dog walking that Malvern has tooffer with the result of a marked increase in lame dogs. Most of the lame dogs have just pulled a muscle orsprained a joint, however, this year we have already hadhalf a dozen dogs with lameness from knee ligamentrupture and the late trimming of hedgerows has brought anumber of dogs with thorns in their pads. What mostpeople fail to realise is that dogs suffer from fitnessproblems as much as we do and overdoing it is notuncommon. Our canine friends suffer from over ambitionjust as much as we do and an improvement in thetemperature, severe cabin fever from a prolonged and wetwinter, and associated weight gain, mean that we have totake some caution when starting to stretch our paws.

Our advice at this time of year is clear. Take it easy andincrease exercise levels slowly. Stiffness after exercise orfirst thing in the morning is a good sign that a quick visit tothe surgery for an examination may go a long way topreventing more serious injury.

On the up side the centre has improved some of itsfacilities to take into account these increasing workloads. Our xray suite is going digital meaning faster and moreaccurate investigations into lameness. Our osteopath,Tony Nevin, and canine masseuse, Helen Clarke, are nowseeing increasing numbers of our patients. Our nurse,Jordan, is running free weight loss clinics and hopefullywith our surgical and medical expertise we are gettingdogs back to normal as fast as possible.

From Masefield Vets we wish all of Malvern’s Pet ownersa happy start to Spring and an enjoyable time in some of the World’s best dog walking.

Great Malvern StationThe Railway system reached into theGreat Malvern area in 1859. TheWorcester and Hereford RailwayCompany engaged architect E.W. Elmslieto design the Great Malvern Station inthe Victorian Gothic style and buildingwork started two years later. To this day,the design is considered unique in minorstation architecture.

In 1986 the station was seriouslydamaged by fire. British Rail, as it wasthen, took the opportunity to update thestation’s layout to be more in line withmodern consumer demands. Changing

operational needs freed up space foroutside commercial interests and it wasshortly after this that Lady Foley’s TeaRoom opened. More recently, Lucy hasjust opened her “Shrinking Violet”flower business.

Great Malvern station is considered byvisitors, regular travellers and localresidents to be an absolute gem. Furtherendorsement was recently given byMichael Portillo, the well-known Radioand TV pundit, who declared that GreatMalvern station was his favourite stationin the whole of the UK.

an ideal place to visit...Tenbury Wells, The Town in the Orchard, lieson the south bank of the River Teme whichforms the border between Shropshire andWorcestershire. It is in the north-west of theMalvern Hills District.

The part-medieval Bridge over the RiverTeme, which is the main route into Town, links Tenbury to Burford , Shropshire andwas rebuilt by Thomas Telford followingflood damage in 1795.

Tenbury was also known as 'the town in theorchard' due to the large numbers of fruitorchards of apple trees and also pears, quince and plum trees, in the immediatevicinity of the town. This heritage is revisitedevery October during the Tenbury Applefest– this year on 12th October.

The whole of the Town Centre is aconservation area with 68 listed buildings.James Cranston’s Round Market, CornExchange and National School still stand.

The Tenbury & District Museum is a shortwalk from the Town Centre and the"Chinese-gothic" Pump Room buildings, built in 1862 is in the heart of the Town andfor those seeking somewhere different toget married The Pump Rooms are licensedfor civil ceremonies.

This year on May 4th we see the TenburyFood Fayre which is held in the Town andcelebrates local food and drink producersand the uniqueness of Tenbury’s shops, public houses and restaurants.

Tenbury is an ideal place to visit for a dayout shopping in shops that are trulyIndependent as the Town has no majorchain stores or multiples and offers arelaxed, friendly shopping experiencewhere you can depend upon personalattention. The cafes, public houses andrestaurants offer a wide range of food anddrink, much sourced locally with somethingto appeal to every taste.

QR or quick response codes are a type of two-dimensional bar-code that can be read using smartphones or tablet devices, which then link directly to content that you choose including

text, emails, websites, phone numbers and more! QR codes differ fromtraditional barcodes as they contain a massive amount of numbers -up to 7,089. This is a significantly larger amount then normal bar-codes, which can only store up to 30 numbers. It is this that enables aQR code to store the large amount of data needed to link to websites.

QR codes were first invented in Japan by the Toyota Group in 1994.These weren’t used in the same way as they are today, but were usedto track parts in the vehicle manufacturing process. QR codes todayare most commonly used to send you to a website which holds moreinformation. They provide advertisers and marketers a huge potentialto communicate to their customers an unlimited amount of informa-tion, at only a scan away.

QR codes can be found on product packaging, magazines, flyers, tvadverts and even in shop window displays. Toscan a QR code you need to download an apponto your smartphone or tablet device. You canusually obtain these for free through the Appstore, Google Play or your app provider for yourphone/device. REGALTENBURY WELLS

CINEMA • ARTS • THEATRE

Carole runs her own businesses and is a farmer’s wifefrom the nearby Clee Hill. She has a married daughterliving locally and also working in Tenbury.

Carole says “I am delighted to be working with Porticoin Tenbury Wells and being able to maintain contactwith the Retailers and Businesses that I started workwith last year through the Malvern Hills District Councilfunded project to help business through the closure ofTeme Bridge and beyond.”

Having lived in the area for the last 30 years (andformerly from the rural Corvedale)Carole has seen a lot

of changes, but the one consistency is the uniquenessand diversity of Tenbury Wells and its Independentshops. Many are family owned and have been tradingfor more than one generation, some are relatively newto the Town and have seen the potential of trading in aTown that is not blighted by multiples.

Working with Portico in Tenbury Wells will be excitingand will help the Town and its businesses becomebetter known to the discerning shopper and introducemore people to the wonderful businesses that tradefrom Tenbury.
