TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

TAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC - 1INTRODUCTION

Ever since ‘Kalidas’ (the first talking picture, colloquiallyknown as ‘talkie’), began to talk and sing, late in 1931, musichas been part and parcel of Tamil Cinema which has, over theyears, gathered strength, scaling and conquering peaks andmore.

Today, music (which includes songs, background music score, musical special effects and such) plays a great part in theproduction of Tamil Cinema. Songs of a movie are big sellers.Described as audio releases’, the songs are released with muchpomp and circumstance by the producers and audio-distribu-tors well before a film is released, and it is big business.Computer disks, video discs, digital video discs and otherformats sell in large numbers not only in this part of the countrywhere Tamil is spoken, but also outside the geographicalborders of the nation, crossing seas, oceans, mountains and all. They cater to a growing market in many countries of Asia likeSri Lanka, Singapore and Malaysia, the United Kingdom andUnited States of America, not excluding Canada where, today,a large number of Tamil speaking people have settled down andlook forward to listening to Tamil film songs - not only of thelatest releases, but also the songs rendered by great singers ofthe past 80 years.

Incidentally, Tamil Cinema has just completed 80 years, having taken its bow way back in 1931. However, it is a matterof regret that, till today, the Tamilnadu government has nottaken any effort to celebrate the great event, nor taken stepsto document the history of this vibrant medium. It is all themore surprising and even sad that the two political parties(DMK and AIADMK) which have, by turns, occupied Fort St.George, the seat of power, since 1967 (having made their wayand captured political power only by exploiting the medium ofcinema), have done nothing till today.

Many singers - some of them were also successful actors andstars - lyric writers, music composers, instrument players andmany others have contributed to the rich growth of music inTamil Cinema over the years. There are also off-screen back-ground singers (who are not seen on screen, but their voices areheard). Some of these have become stars in their own right, enjoying a greater degree of popularity than the onscreen stars, actors and actresses. This interesting situation known asplayback singing is something unique to Indian Cinema and, today, it is a multibillion rupee industry and still growing.

This new series makes a modest attempt to narrate theinteresting, fascinating and absorbing history of music andmusicians in Tamil Cinema since that fateful day in October1931, when a Tamil song was heard from a movie screen at firstin Madras at a cinema called Kinema Central’ (renamed lateras Murugan Theater’). Life has never been the same again forthe local people.

This historic site has been recently demolished giving awayperhaps to a shopping mall. Sad, perhaps, but so true. It is notcommercially viable today to run a single screen theater in thisage of multiple screens, shopping malls and such, which havenow become the order of the day. Many popular cinema the-aters which had earned a place in the hearts, souls and mindsof people have vanished for ever. Only the nostalgic memoriesstill live in the minds of folks.

**** ***** *****Somewhat interestingly, the first Tamil talking and singing

picture Kalidas was not exactly a hundred percent Tamilfilm. It spoke not only Tamil but also sang and spoke Teluguand, more surprisingly, even Hindi! Strictly speaking, it couldbe described as the first multilingual motion picture ofIndia! Indeed it was advertised in the press as a ‘Tamil-TeluguTalking Picture’. How did this happen? Thereby hangs a taleworth narrating ....

Killing fields‘Vivekananda Flyover’ in Kolkata that was crawling into

a semblance of a mighty public gift by the government gotsick and tired of the mighty thinkers of the city and, in ahuff, came down in a squiggle killing 21 and injuring manymore. This flyover was not a finished marvel and perhapsneeded more months or years to qualify as one that wouldserve many purposes imagined by the State governmentbut, because of the fate of the innocents near it, went awry.

This misadventure of the government adds to the Mamatagovernment’s woes which the blood of the innocents wouldremind as a requiem. Mamata, already shaken by severalpushes and pulls, would require to wear steel-plated uni-forms for protection from ad hoc revellers who are out forthe rulers’ blood.

This sad episode should be looked at on a national scaleand the causative factor must be found so that this maynot be cited as a manacle to progressive action by govern-ments where the public need for implementation of people-centric dynamism is in peril.

Though a State subject, the upkeep of roads and internalbridges should be under the supervision of technicallyqualified officers of the Central government or any similarbody qualified on that subject, whose approval of any suchscheme is the final word in the feasibility of such megaprojects. This super body of experts should be like a superombudsman whose opinion should be final in such schemes. In short, this touch-me-not personage must be for thenonce while holding the file, like M.K. Gandhi or M.A.Sadanand, beyond external provocations of money, poli-tics and what is contemptuously called ‘pelf’. Build bridgesof understanding, before you build flyovers. There aremany millions of good people who can stop the rot in publicusage of public money. Flyovers will not collapse if honestmen build them. Find them.

Pavements encroached uponby vendors

Sir, What is the use of widening or laying newpavements when they are of no use to pedes-trians? It is a common sight since decades tosee pavements occupied by roadside vendors, eateries and commercial establishments. Ifnot, pavements are used for parking vehicles.Except for knee jerk action once in a while, theCorporation has failed to find a permanentsolution to the problem. Pedestrians can beseen walking on busy roads risking their liveswith encroached pavements alongside. B.Kannan, T. Nagar Residents’ Welfare As-sociation, 30, Rangan Street, T. Nagar.

LETTERS TO THEEDITOR

Debris dumped on road margin

Sir, The stretch of Hindi Prachara SabhaStreet, T. Nagar, behind Mahatama GandhiVidyalaya is being used for dumping construc-tion debris.

The miscreants bring a truck at night anddump the debris at the spot.

The local residents have complained severaltimes to Corporation officials but no action isbeing taken.

I appeal to the authorities to clear the debrisand erect a warning signboard at the spot toprevent such activities in the future. S.Raghunath, Govindan Road, T. Nagar

Year-old bus shelter awaitsinauguration

Sir, The modern bus shelter erected a yearago on Govindan Road (next to petrol outlet),West Mambalam is not being used.

Buses stop instead at Mettupalayam busshelter on Govindan Street which is in front ofa row of shops including a TASMAC shop.

The shelter is usually frequented by drunk-ards because of which women commuters usu-ally stay away for safety reasons. The newshelter, which has a roof and seats, is free ofcrowd or other encroachments, and offers bet-ter convenience and safety for commuters. Iappeal to MTC to put the new bus shelter toimmediate use for the benefit of commuters.Sivagami Narayanan, Govindan Road,West Mambalam.
