Principal’s Message (continued) If requested, a meeting will be scheduled as soon as possible. Please note that teachers may also be contacting you to request a meeting.

If you have any changes in your residence, home/business/mobile telephone number(s), emergency contact(s), or medical information, PLEASE inform us immediately. You can walk in, call the office at 307-5300, or write a note to your child’s teacher to update the information. It is VERY important that we have current information on file at all times, especially in the event of a school emergency. We have had cases where we attempted to contact parents/guardians via mobile phone, only to hear “The number you have dialed is no longer in service…” type of messages. Manana Elementary has “mass messaging” (recorded messages and/or text messaging) capability, and we use that service sparingly. If the information in the State’s electronic database is incorrect, then you might not receive the call/text message when the mass messaging service is used.

THANK YOU to all who are reporting student absences using the designated attendance line number: 307-5398. If you need a “refrigerator magnet” that lists Manana Elementary School’s telephone / fax / report an absence telephone numbers, please feel free to ask for one in our office.

We are committed to providing a safe environment for our students, staff and visitors. We conduct safety drills throughout the school year to help students / faculty / staff prepare for possible emergencies. IN CASE OF A SCHOOL EMERGENCY

• DO NOT call or rush down to Manana Elementary. Phone lines need to be kept open and office staff will be needed for emergency response efforts.

• DO NOT call or send text messages to your child(ren). Faculty, staff and students are discouraged from using mobile phone communication for safety reasons.

Manana Parent Bulletin #6 / Page 3 of 16 Principal’s Message (continued)

• Tune in to local television/radio stations for official school news alerts.

• Rely only on OFFICIAL communication from school or public safety officials.

• Listen for OFFICIAL information regarding reunification with your child. Students will be released ONLY to parents / guardians who are documented as emergency contacts and who present a picture ID such as a driver’s license / military ID / passport.

• Go to the DOE website (www.hawaiipublicschools.org) for OFFICIAL updates.

SAFETY TERMS AND PROCEDURES In the event of an emergency at Manana Elementary, it is important that you know these terms:

1. LOCKDOWN: A lockdown takes place if an internal or external threat is identified at our school. School doors will be locked and students will be confined to a room (classroom / office / library) depending when / where the threat is identified. No entry into or exit from the school will be allowed until an “all-clear” announcement is made.

2. SHELTER IN PLACE: Students take refuge in designated areas to protect them from hazardous material or severe weather. No entry or exit from the school will be allowed until an “all-clear” announcement is made.

Principal’s Message (continued) 3. OFF-CAMPUS EVACUATION:

Certain emergencies may require students and staff to evacuate school because it is no longer safe to remain on campus. Manana Elementary has two (2) evacuation sites, depending on which site the police / fire officials direct us to go - - Manana Community Park (on Waimano Hm. Rd.) is our primary site, and Trinity United Methodist Church (Komo Mai Drive) is our secondary site. In the event the emergency continues and students are not able to return to campus, parent or guardian reunification procedures will take place at one of those sites, so that is why it is important to watch / listen for only OFFICIAL communication from school or public safety officials.

On a safety related note, the Honolulu Police Department (HPD)

informed me that officers monitored Kaumoli and Paakamaa Streets last month. Residents have voiced concerns directly to HPD about drivers disregarding the STOP sign, and children not wearing seat belts. Warnings and citations were issued for both violations. The officers also mentioned that some vehicles parked on Kaumoli Street (near the school) were facing the wrong direction. The HPD and Manana Elementary ultimately want the same thing: Our children AND adults are SAFE, RESPECTFUL, and RESPONSIBLE. Aloha, Bryan Loo

GEOGRAPHIC EXCEPTION FOR SY 2017-2018

A Christmas Performance by the Second Graders

Ezra Antolin-Somildam, Sean Dollente, Kingston Geron, Imipono Kala, Faith Lepolo, Micah Miyazono, Isabella Seaman, Lilyanah Tavale, Kylie Uehara, Isaac Yamada, Jayde Antolin, Evan Concepcion, Dylan Cook, Colt Dunaway, Krisha Kekahuna-Ramos, Isabelle Myers, Dylann Neyer, Kolten Nishimoto, Arrya Okamura, Travis Osaki, Kylie Takamatsu, Jeremiah Tinaza, Aaron Vargas, Kaili Watanabe

Twenty four of Manana’s second graders performed at the Ala Moana Shopping Center Centerstage on December 10, 2016. They performed their Winter Festival hip-hop dance to “Jingle Bells” by Kyle Massey. They were a big hit with the audience and got everyone into the Christmas spirit! A special thank you to Xavier Geyrozaga, owner and director of Stylez Connection Dance Studio, who choreographed the dance and volunteered his time to work with the students. We appreciate the parents for their support and Mr. Loo for giving the students the opportunity to participate in this event. Thank you to the students for being courageous by stepping onto the stage and performing with such enthusiasm! They represented Manana School well. Mrs. Shimabuku and Mrs. Miyazono
