Lackland Students Compete in Regional Science Fair Eo’in Devine and Cody Heiser, Lackland Elementary 6 th grade students, participated in the 56 th annual Alamo Regional Science and Engineering Fair at St. Mary’s University over the weekend of 3-4 March, with final judging on Monday, March 5. Eo’in Devine earned a second place ribbon in the Junior Division/Biochemistry and will advance to the Exxon Mobil Texas State Science and Engineering Fair, to be held at the Henry B. Gonzales Arena from March 29-April 1, 2012. Eo’in and Cody were winners at the Lackland Science Fair and advanced to the Regional Science Fair. They spent many hours outside of school fine-tuning their projects for the regional competition. Their parents were supportive of their efforts and provided that much-needed motivation to keep pushing forward. Ms. Monica Fonseca, Lackland Elementary Science and Math Facilitator, worked hard behind the scenes to ensure both boys were technically ready for the competition. SINGING THEIR HEARTS OUT 2nd Grade did a wonderful job at its performance of “A Song for All Seasons” on Tuesday night. They sang, they danced, and had a wonderful time sharing what they have been learning in music the past
few weeks. They performed for a packed house, and everyone left with smiles on their faces! Congrats 2nd Grade!

The 8th graders of Stacey Jr/Sr High went on a field trip to the University of Texas in Austin. I asked a few students what they thought of the trip.
“My favorite part was when we saw a floating gold cube in liquid nitrogen, which was levitating,” said Brandon Armstead.
Danielle Lipsey stated, “I thought the turtles were really cute and funny!”
“I liked going into the dorms and seeing how big they were and what it was like. I also liked making a sun-print paper because it was something that I had never done before,” Vimarys Oliveras said.
Our trip was very interesting... a few students ate meal worms, got to have their picture on the cover of a magazine at a “photo-shoot”, and saw a 3-D printer.
We, the students, are very pleased to have had the opportunity to travel there and check things out. We also thank Mrs. Duron, Mrs. Caldwell, and our bus driver, Ms. Maria, for taking us. We have a better idea of
what college life is like and some different areas to look at in career choices.

The sky is falling!!!! No it is just a bunch of 1st grade drawings hanging on the ceiling of their building. In Mr. Garcia’s art class they listened to a story about floating down from the Tower of
the Americas after we all went there together. They then had to trace their hands and feet in the corners of a large paper and fill
in their body. They enjoyed it very much and did a great job!

PREPARED TO SAVE A LIFE
This week the Stacey Child Development class learned some life-saving skills. They had the opportunity to take the American Red Cross Adult, Child, and Infant CPR
Course. They also learned First Aid and how to use the AED. During this training, students learned the emergency action steps: Check, Call, and Care. During the day students practiced CPR on the mannequins until the instructor observed that the skill
was mastered. Students learned what to do if when someone is choking, having a seizure, experiencing sudden fevers, a stroke, and a diabetic emergencies. Wrapping an open wound and making a sling were some other first aid skills that were acquired. The
certificate that the students earned is valid for two years.
