PASTORAL CARE

Page 3 Mary, Queen of Peace Parish August 12, 2018

From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

People have been asking me about my health. As you may remember,

the stroke - a very small one - occurred while I was asleep between Friday

evening, June 7th, and Saturday morning, June 8th. On the morning of June 8th I

began to notice a very slight “glitch” in my speech that involved an occasional

difficulty in clearly pronouncing certain words. My diction was a tiny bit off, and

some of the words that I would try to pronounce would come out a little slurred.

So minute was the problem that no one seemed to notice but me - no one said

anything to me about it, at least, nor inquired as to whether I was having some

sort of problem.

When the problem persisted into the next day - Sunday, June 9th - I

mentioned the matter to Rich Shively and Deacon Jack Luz, and they both agreed

with me that it would be best to check myself in to the hospital. I went to the

emergency department at Swedish Hospital in Issaquah, and the stroke specialists

there examined me and determined that I had indeed experienced a very small

stroke in the part of the brain that controls the speech functions. They kept me for

observation for a couple of days, and discussed with me a plan to move forward

in such a way as to reduce my risk of having another stroke. This plan has several

main aspects:

1. Lowering blood pressure and reducing weight through exercise, diet and

medication.

2. Monitoring and managing more carefully the levels of stress in my life.

3. Addressing a slight atrial fibrillation in my heart also via medication and exercise.

I have been working at and implementing this plan since I came home from the hospital on Tuesday, June 11th, and have made progress in each of the areas that the plan is designed to address. My blood pressure and weight have been coming down, I have been eating more wisely and modestly, I have been exercising more regularly - various forms of aerobic exercise 40-60 minutes 4/5 times a week - and the medications for the blood pressure and for the atrial fibrillation are clearly helping. The less demanding summer routine at the parish, together with the benefit of once again having a consistent Weekend Assistant Priest in Father Bryan Hersey, have reduced my level of stress, and the support and prayers of both staff members and parishioners have likewise been of great help and relief to me. I want to thank the many folks who have prepared the delicious and nourishing meals for me, especially in the immediate aftermath of my stay in the hospital and during the first several weeks after I returned home.

As I move forward and seek to build upon the good start I have thus far

had in my “come back”, I simply ask you to continue to pray for me, and to

continue to encourage me in the risk reduction plan the doctors laid out for me.

Gratefully.

Stewardship of Time, Talent & Treasure GOD Gives It All, Then Calls Us To Share—Become Involved In Parish Life, It Is Filled With Blessings

Weekly Stewardship Message The gifts of God that the angel brought to Elijah - food, water, rest, and encouragement — were given, not

for his own good alone, but to strengthen him for service. How am I using my gifts to serve others?

Stewardship of time and talent opportunities within the parish Our parish encourages everyone to give at least two hours of their time each week in prayer and service, beginning with Mass.

Whatever gifts you’ve been given, be thankful...and find a way to share them.

Ministry of the Month—Youth Ministry & Confirmation

Some thoughts regarding our Confirmation preparation program: My name is Michael Cantu and our family has been parishioners here since 2011. In that time we have experienced many wonderful aspects of parish life at Mary Queen of Peace. Our eldest daughter and son were both Confirmed here. I have been helping as a Reader as well as a group Confirmation team leader which I find very rewarding. If someone were to ask me why I am involved with Confirmation Preparation I would answer by first explaining that I do so for the young people of the parish so that they can see that the adults care about their faith journey. In my own small way, I feel that I can help support the process of their growth in their faith under, the direction of Chelsea, whom I admire for her dedication and demonstrated care of the youth entrusted to her. I have witnessed, during my time working with the young people going through the preparation process, that they have a desire to better understand their relationship with Jesus Christ and his Gospel message. We as a parish are very blessed to have so many young people attending to their faith and continuing to grow toward their spiritual maturity. I continue to return to this ministry because it brings me genuine consolation and joy. "Adoration will heal our Church and thus our nation and thus our world... Adoration touches everyone and everything... [because it touches the Creator, Who touches everything and everyone]... Sacred Story Many people, all the way from Pontius Pilate to many in our modern culture, have argued that there is no such thing as Truth. But spiritual discernment is a way to discover the Truth in our lives.

Fr. Watson tells us: “Jesus tells Pilate that he was born and came into the world to testify to the truth—the truth about God, the truth about human nature, and the truth about salvation. Truth does exist and discernment’s goal is to help us distinguish truth from falsehood in our Sacred Story. The Ten Commandments reveal the moral truths: about God; about woman and man’s proper relationship to God, and their relationship to each other and to creation. God is revealing the knowledge of truth lost in

paradise.”

Legion of Mary

“Mary is the Mother of all the members of the Saviour, because by her charity she has co-operated in the birth of the faithful in the Church. Mary is the living mould of God, that is to say, it is in her alone that the God Man was naturally formed without losing a feature, so to speak, of His Godhead; and it is in her alone that man can be properly and in a life-like way formed into God ,so far as human nature is

capable of this by the grace of Jesus Christ.”

Meet our new High School Youth Minister Hello there! My name is Patrick Arrington, and I am the new Senior High Youth Minister here at Mary, Queen of Peace! The idea of becoming a youth minister, let alone in Washington, a decade ago would never have crossed my mind. I was just coming back to the Catholic faith at that point, and believed that I was destined to work in the math and sciences fields in Florida my whole life. Growing up in South Florida, I had never even seen Washington until about a year and a half ago, but the journey God has led me on to get here has been truly beautiful! I had been doing supplemental math tutoring in Miami, FL, when I went to a conference with the Fellowship of Catholic University Students. I was in adoration one evening there, and it hit me that I needed to just drop everything and become a missionary. I had no idea where, but God pointed me to Our Lady Star of the Sea in Bremerton, WA, where last year I was running the youth and young adult programs. I instantly fell in love with the Pacific Northwest and knew this was home. When the missionary year was ending, I was discerning where God wanted to take me next. During that discernment, he continued to show me blessing after blessing in working with the youth, and called me to continue using my talents as a youth minister here at MQP. I am extremely excited to start this journey with the parish, and look forward to getting to meet you all in the coming

weeks.
