THIRD SUNDAY of ADVENT
Divorced and Re-married? If you are divorced and remarried outside of the Catholic Church without a Decree of Invalidity, or if you are married outside of the Catholic Church, you may not partake of the Sacraments, including the reception of Holy Communion. Until it is shown otherwise through the ministry of the Tribunal, no person is free to enter into another marriage without the appearance or occasion of serious sin. A divorce alone would not affect, or hinder in any way, your participation in the Catholic Church. A divorced Catholic is free to receive the sacraments. However, if you are divorced and have remarried, or if you are divorced and in a new relationship, or if you are living with someone without a Decree of Invalidity (and your former spouse is still living) you may not par-take of the sacraments, including the reception of Holy Communion. Consider seeking a Decree of Invalidity which will enable you to return to a full participation in the sacramental life of the Church. For more information contact Deacon Jim Bindel at the Church office at 696-1253.

Dear Friends of Notre Dame Catholic School, We are endeavoring to honor those who have served Notre Dame during the many years of its long history. Throughout this history, individuals have served quietly and faithfully. Some are no longer with us but the legacy of their service continues to this day. Others are still a vibrant part of our community but no longer employed by the school. We do not want our people to be forgotten. Therefore, if you know someone living or deceased, who was part of our school for a minimum of ten years, please nominate them for the 2019 Distinguished Service Award. The award will be presented during Catholic Schools Week. Friends and family will be invited to a reception and a picture of them will be placed on a special wall in the elementary school. Please give this invita on your serious considera on, think back over our long and beau ful history of catholic educa on in Wichita Falls and nominate someone who has gone before us and generously served our community. Then please submit their name for our Dis nguished Service Award. Send your nomina on to [email protected] In your email, please tell us why this individual is so deserving. We look forward to hearing how you made Jesus the heart of your
family’s Christmas joy !
This 3rd Sunday of Advent in Luke 3:10-11, we again hear John the Baptist speak as he prepares the people for the coming of the Messiah. The people ask him: “What should we do?” He said to them in reply, “whoever has two cloaks should share with the person who has none. And
whoever has food should do likewise.”
John made it clear that we are to follow Jesus’ commandment to love God and neighbor by sharing all that we have.
Who is your neighbor . . . only the person living next door to you? What about the person who is homeless living on the street or the refugee living in a shelter who has come seeking safety in a new country?
Like Jesus, John the Baptist made it clear that we are to care for others . . . ALL OF GOD’S PEOPLE. We car-ry inside of us the light of the redeemed when we serve those we do not know!
"The Lord is near"!
7
THIRD SUNDAY IN ADVENT
In Christianity, we hear often about the "Good News." We might often associate it with Jesus' compassion to the poor, his healings and miracles, and the salvation he won for us. In today's Gospel, we read of John the Baptist. "Exhorting them in many other ways, he preached good news to the people." Yet as we examine the rest of the reading, we see examples of John's preaching. If you have two cloaks, give one away. Don't cheat others out of their money, extort, or lie. And, of course, the warning that the Messiah is on the move and "his winnowing fan is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquencha-ble fire." Merry Christmas? Not only do John's listeners enjoy his message, but they seem to think he might be the awaited Messiah! To understand today's Gospel, it's important to understand the Jewish people. For most of their history, God's chosen people had been under someone else's heel. They were slaves in Egypt. Their kingdoms were ravaged first by the Assyrians, then the Babylonians. Now they were under the yoke of the Roman Empire. Familiar with being strangers in a strange land, welcoming the stranger, caring for the vulnerable, and enacting justice was incredibly important to them as a people. While John's words may seem odd or strong to our modern ears, this call to justice was welcome, even if it was directed at the hearer.
The truth is, no one is exempt from John's call to repentance. We all have further to go in the Christian life. We can all grow in virtue and love our neighbors more generously. The Church gives us the Advent season to examine our own hearts. Did any of John's warnings reso-nate with you? That could be a great thing to
bring to Jesus this week!
This Gaudete Sunday calls us to rejoice because the Lord is near. Does your heart rejoice and sing, or are the pressures and burdens of life weighing you down? We can easily become overwhelmed. The weaknesses and sins of life, indeed our own weakness and sin, eat away at the joy and hope God wants us to know. Those who are grounded in their faith and possess deep spiritual lives know that God is near. Realizing this puts life into perspective. We really want to be free from our burdens but do not always know how to achieve this. We keep stumbling and falling. Advent is a time when we can learn to "do life differently," just like John the Baptist instructed the crowds. Joy and hope are the gifts God offers, not anxiety and despair.
"Our world has been filled with noise ? It is time to enter into the classroom of silence."
