"I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly."

Those of you who have a household pet, such as a dog or cat, would agree that your pet knows your voice. I know Anton, my dog, can pick out my voice from others. He also knows whether he is a good dog or bad dog just by the tone of my voice. Trust me, he is always a good boy. He wouldn't want to do anything to upset his daddy. Because He knows who feeds him and loves him!

Today on this Fourth Sunday of Easter, we celebrate Good Shepherd Sunday. Each year, the Gospel for this Sunday is taken from the Good Shepherd parables in the tenth chapter from the Gospel of Saint John. Shepherds were essential workers in the time of Jesus as they are today. The work of shepherds hasn't really changed much in the last 2000 years. For us here in America, we often confuse shepherds with cowboys. Shepherds are not cowboys.

Cowboys always guide their flock or herd from behind. Whereas a shepherd leads from the front. From their position out front, shepherds are able to protect the flock from dangers lurking ahead. The flock follows the shepherd. The flock trusts the shepherd. They know their shepherd's voice from others. The work of a shepherd is not a job rather it is their livelihood. The shepherd never deserts their flock. They eat and sleep surrounded by their sheep. It can be said that the shepherd and sheep are one. The shepherd and the flock find their identity in each other.

It is no wonder why Jesus used such an illustration to describe His relationship with us. Jesus is the Good Shepherd who walks ahead of us not behind us. From this position, Jesus confronts and faces those dangers and obstacles first so that we may follow and pass unharmed. Jesus's voice is one of mercy, love, and peace and we should be able to know His voice from others. Jesus also knows each of us by name and not one of us is ever forgotten. He is the Good Shepherd who will search for any of us who are lost or fallen behind. Finally, Jesus doesn't take the night off and leave us defenseless on our own, rather, He stays with us. Our very identity is found in Him as Jesus's identity is with us. He and the Father are one, so are we one with Jesus.

In the Gospel, Jesus warns us about those thieves disguised as shepherds. Such bad shepherds don't care at all about the flock. They are only out for themselves. They will manipulate, cheat, lie, harm, abuse, and rob the flock of life. We need to be able to distinguish their lies from the voice of Jesus the Good Shepherd. We learn to know which voice is Jesus through prayer. His voice will warm our hearts. Just like those disciples on the Road to Emmaus.

So, what do we have to gain by following Jesus the Good Shepherd? Jesus answers this question by saying: "I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly." No other shepherd can offer such a gift. No other shepherd but Jesus can give us life to the full. Don't fall for their lies. Jesus the Good Shepherd never lies. The life that the Good Shepherd wants to give us is free, real, incredible, unimaginable, abundant, and forever. Why go after anything else?

"Vine para que tengan vida y la tengan en abundancia". Aquellos de ustedes que tienen una mascota doméstica, como un perro o un ga-to, estarían de acuerdo en que su mascota conoce su voz. Sé que Anton, mi perro, puede distinguir mi voz de los demás. También sabe si es un buen perro o un mal perro solo por el tono de mi voz. Confía en mí, él siempre es un buen chico. No querría hacer nada para molestar a su papá. ¡Porque sabe quién lo alimenta y lo ama! Hoy, en este Cuarto Domingo de Pascua, celebramos el Domingo del Buen Pastor. Cada año, el Evangelio de este domingo se toma de las parábolas del Buen Pastor en el décimo capítulo del Evangelio de San Juan. Los pastores eran trabajadores esenciales en el tiempo de Jesús como lo son hoy. El trabajo de los pastores real-mente no ha cambiado mucho en los últimos 2000 años. Para nosotros aquí en Estados Unidos, a menudo confundimos a los pastores con los vaqueros. Los pas-tores no son vaqueros. Los vaqueros siempre guían a su rebaño o rebaño desde atrás. Parish Registration Question: Why is it so important that we register in a parish? Isn't it good enough that we go to Mass? Answer: Registration is the official way we join a parish community. Many people think that because they attend a particular parish they automatically belong. At times, young adults who have moved away for years think they are still signed up under their parents. But membership requires signing up, formally enrolling yourself in a parish. Registration is a com-mitment to a community, a way to be included in the religious, social, and ministerial activities of your parish. Your registration affects the parish in many ways. Census numbers can determine how many priests are assigned to a church, what benefits and obligations the community has to the diocese, and how Masses, Confessions, and devotions are planned and scheduled. Registration shows you belong. It is also necessary for certain benefits, like scheduling sac-raments, obtaining sponsor certificates, and getting donation statements for taxes. Most importantly, it lets the parish count on you, to call on you to assist in its mission. Sanctuary Candle Offerings/Ofrendas de velas del santuario The red Sanctuary Lamp above the Tabernacle burns to remind us of the sacramental presence of Jesus Christ. If you wish to have the Sanctuary Candle burning in memory of a loved one, to honor a special occasion, or a special intention, you can make arrangements with the Parish Office. The cost of the candle is $20 and it burns for one week. A notice of your intention will be posted in the bulletin.
